The George is a pub/restaurant which is a short walk from the main shopping area of Hamilton. The George is a family run establishment. The pub is open until late 7 days a week but food is served 6 days a week until 8pm I believe. Children are welcome until 8pm as long as they are with adults and the pub operates an 'over 25 policy' so ensure you have your ID with you.

      *~Food and Drink~*

The George offers pub grub and also a wide range of drinks including speciality ales, draught beers and also champagne, wine and spirits. Soft drinks are available. Prices range from 35p (for diluting juice for the kids) up to £40.00 (for champagne).

The food on offer is typical pub grub and there is a range of affordable starters/sharing platters, main meals, light meals and desserts.

*Starters and lightbites include nachos, soup, sandwiches and baked potatoes. £1.95-£3.95
*Main courses include lasagne, steak pie, pasta, steak haggis and fish and chips to name a few. £3.95-£9.95. Vegetarians can choose from veggie burger, macaroni, baked potato, sandwiches or salad.
*Desserts include chocolate fudge cake, apple pie, ice cream, sticky toffee pudding or ice cream sundae. £2.95-£3.65.

Childrens meals were around the £3.50 mark and options included sausages, chicken gourjons, mince and also macaroni with sides.

      *~Layout and Facilities~*

The George is easy to locate but lacks any sign outside. Inside, the building has retained a lot of original features and is dimly lit during the day. Wooden benches run across the window side of the pub and there are a lot of wooden beams and wooden flooring giving a rustic look. There are tables to accommodate small parties of dinners but the pub isn't very big.

The bar appears to be well stocked and during our visit, there were a lot of Halloween decorations up. Radio music played in the background but wasn't intrusive. The ambience was nice for a pub and it was clean and tidy. There are no baby changing facilities but there is a disabled toilet and the pub is disable friendly. The toilets are located at the back of the pub and are quite compact but clean. They could do with being modernised a little and I can imagine they would get busy at times.

There is a games machine at the back of the pub. Children are accommodated as there are highchairs and childrens menus available.

      *~Our Visit~*

When out in Hamilton with the kids, we usually go to a little cafe for lunch. Last week, we arrived to find the cafe completely full and we decided to look elsewhere for somewhere reasonably priced to eat. My sister said a pub nearby served delicious steak pie but when we arrived, some gentlemen eating in the bar said the lounge was closed for meals and recommended The George a short walk away. My review will be based around our eating experience here.

I had never heard of The George before our visit. As it happens, it is right across from our favourite Greek restaurant, Costas. We checked that children were welcome and went in. We were able to choose from the tables which were free so selected a table in the corner which was already set up for our party of 4. The pub wasn't too busy when we arrived but there was a family sitting nearby. During our lunch there, we noticed a few people coming and going but unlike a lot of pubs, it wasn't heaving or reeking of stale booze. It does appear to be family friendly and have a distinctive, character feel which is quite cosy.

We were peckish when we arrived and had a quick glance at the menu after the waitress took our drinks order. The food selection on offer is just right for a pub in my opinion. There is nothing particularly special on offer - just standard (and safe) pub grub. We decided to share a starter of regular nachos. We received a bowl of Doritos (yes really) topped with a decent amount of melted cheese and dips of sour cream and salsa. Whilst I would have expected proper nachos, we did enjoy our starter and found it sufficient to share and nibble on whilst waiting for our main courses.

After 20 minutes or so, our main courses arrived and were all well presented indeed. My sister opted for steak pie which was served with chips, carrots and (evil) peas. She really enjoyed her meal and found the pastry to be to her liking ie slightly soggy from the gravy but flaky on top. The meat was of a good quality and wasn't fatty or chewy. The boys received good sized portions from the kids menu. Spud opted for mince, tatties and beans which he enjoyed very much. Boo is a bit more fussy about his food so opted for chicken gourjons and chips. The chicken gourjons were quite large and very tasty indeed. Both boys cleared their plates.

I was quite spoiled for choice as many of the main courses on offer are favourites of mine. I forgot my diet for a short while and selected the macaroni cheese. I received a perfectly presented meal. The macaroni was served in a dish and there was a hearty portion which had just the right level of creamy cheese sauce to avoid being too cheesy. The chips were plentiful and very tasty - fluffy inside and nicely crisp on the outside. I received a side portion of salad including lettuce, onion, cucumber and tomato. It was fresh tasting. There is the option to have garlic bread inside of chips. I enjoyed my meal and cleared the plate. Each main meal was enjoyed and was served hot and fresh.

We always have a small amount of room for dessert. Not wishing to overdo it, my sister and I decided to share a dessert whilst the boys had a small ice cream each. This wasn't included in with their meal. I find the choice of desserts to be typical of most pubs and restaurants and there is likely to be something for everyone. We opted for sticky toffee pudding with ice cream. It arrived hot and was of a decent portion size. It was moist, sweet and perfect for sharing as one each would have led to toothache!

We had no complaints with the service we received at The George whilst dining here. We were seen to quickly, food was served at a good pace and our bill was brought promptly. The waitress was efficient and friendly. She kept up with delivering meals, taking orders and also serving at the bar with complete ease.

For one sharer, two main meals, two kids meals, one dessert, two kids ice creams, two diluting juices and two cans of fizzy pop, our bill came to around £30.00 which I feel is a fair price to pay. We paid by cash but they accept card payments. We left a tip as we were satisfied with the quality of the food.

The George is a lovely pub to grab a bite to eat in during the day. I'm not really a pub person as I don't drink often but wouldn't mind a drink in here in the evening before going for dinner or to the cinema nearby. It doesn't seem to be as popular as the three pubs around the corner including Hemmingways but it does have charm, appeal and I'm sure it is classed as a local pub to many as it offers a relaxing atmopshere.

We will happily dine here again. I can recommend The George but don't be looking for outstanding food.

      Thanks for reading :)
