The Churchillian is a very popular eating and drinking establishment which is located on top of Portsdown Hill, near Portsmouth in Hampshire. Having recently experienced a lot of very disappointing meals in various Brewers Fayre Restaurants I was looking for somewhere different to take friends out for a nice meal and the Chuchillian was recommended to me. My husband and I decided to pop in one lunchtime to check it out before taking our friends there. The Churchillian has superb views over the Solent and in particular diners have a good view of Porchester Castle, Portsmouth and the Isle of Wight. Unfortunately the views cannot be appreciated from all tables. We arrived at the Churchillian at about 1.30pm on a Wednesday lunchtime, the car park was very busy as was the pub, however we managed to park and find a table quite quickly. Our first thought was that we may have a long wait before we could order or receive our food but The Churchillian was well prepared and there was plenty of friendly staff taking food orders and serving drinks. Our meals took about 10 minutes to arrive. Food is served until 2pm lunchtime and from 6pm - 9pm each evening. The menu is quite vast and caters for a wide variety of tastes, including vegetarian. As I am a fussy eater I often struggle to find a menu offering more than 1 or 2 choices of plain english food. I was therefore pleasantly suprised to find that there was a superb variety of basic english dishes on offer, so much so that I found it difficult to choose what to have. The menu is too vast to go into great detail, but popular dishes being served include the following, Jacket Potatoes served with various very generous fillings, omelettes, ham, egg and chips and steaks etc. The main courses are normally served with chips and side salad or potatoes and vegetables. The portions are very generous and were very enjoyable. Most main courses are priced at bet
ween £6 - £7 and are very good value for money. For pudding lovers there is a good choice of traditional deserts, including Chocolate Fudge Cake, Spotted Dick and other favourites. The puddings are priced at approximately £2.50 and are served with cream or ice cream. Unfortunately The Churchillian gets very busy and we were unable to book a table to take our friends, however we were advised that we could just turn up on the day as they only book out half the tables and the rest are available on a first come first served basis. The Churchillian is well worth a visit but I would suggest booking in advance to avoid disappointment.
