“ PUB. 120 Blythe Rd, London, West Kensington W14 0HD. Tel: +44(0)20 7371 4561. „
Tucked away on Blythe Road in the heart of Brook Green, the Old Parr's Head is not a place you would happen upon by accident. To even know where it is, you would either have to be a local or to be guided there by one. But once you find it, you'll be going back regularly. The pub is on the corner of a not-very-busy road and a positively empty one. It has outdoor tables on both sides, and in the summer these are a remarkably pleasant prospect, even though they are roadside rather than tucked away in a beer garden. Inside, the pub has wooden floors and a cosy, warm feeling. Half of the pub space is given over to tables for the Thai food, which is definitely several cuts above your average pub fare - and even above a lot of Thai restaurants I've been to in London! Portions are generous and reasonably priced, and the kitchen is open to the dining room, so that you can watch the chefs stir-fry you up a treat. The bar area is spacious, with tables round the edges and plenty of standing space. London Pride and Bass are on draught, as well as Stella, Grolsch and various other lagers on tap. The wine list is respectable, although not especially wide-ranging, and there is a good range of malt whiskies. In the main, though, the attraction of the place is in its local, quiet feel. It's rare in that part of London to find a pub that is both good and local, since the few really nice ones tend to get quickly crowded out by hordes of twenty-somethings looking for a new experience, but the Old Parr's Head manages to bridge the gap wonderfully. Just don't all go there at once and fill it up!
