I remember the days when Majro Toms was simply Major Toms. Now, of course, its "Down Under at Major Toms". Maybe this name was picked to confuse people as to the ownership of the bar, or maybe its just a temporary thing. I spent seven months in Sydney last year, and so when I heard of a bar in Dublin that sold VB in cans (at a mere £3 for 330mls) and bottles of Carlton Cold, I decided to check it out. The first time I went there was after work on a Friday evening - very sunny. The first thing that struck me was the size of the place - basically because there was no one in it. The decor of the place is a nod to the bars down under - loads of AFL Jerseys around the place. The bar staff seem to be Aus/NZ/SA born, which is a nice touch, and not too surprising. Service was ok, not bad not great. The atmosphere was terrible - the music was quite lound, they were showing AFL games on the TV's situated around the bar and - did I say this already? The place was empty. It started filling up a little bit later on in the evening, but not enough to compete with the excellent Sinnotts just up the road. I'd say if you want a flavour of Aus, or if you are a backpacker - give it a go. But I cant really see the point in an Aussie bar in the home of the Irish Pub.
