Sometimes this bar is great, sometimes it's dead. Problem is, it's not too consistent, so it's going to be difficult for me to advise when you should go. It is however, packed out every Saturday; you know you're in for a decent time in Macey's on a Saturday after about 8-8:30pm. Some Fridays it's heaving, some it's moderate. Mondays are usually decent, but there're better alternatives on these days. The reason for this is because all over Newcastle prices are dirt cheap on Mondays, however Macey's don't decrease their prices THAT much compared to everyone else. Weekdays in Maceys are generally crap, and Sunday's are moderate. As for prices in general, this bar is a rip-off for bottles, about average for pints, and average most days of the week on spirits with mixers. Exceptions include the 70p for a shot of tequila when you buy any other alcoholic drink. A quick way to get hammered. Personally I'm not a big fan of the Pig & Whistle, though if you like it then Maceys is a good starter before heading off there. Maceys has quite a lot of dancing room, both downstairs and upstairs. It seems to show bizarre videos of people who can perform bizarre tasks, even late at night. This is of course totally drowned out by the music. There are 3 bars, however on a Saturday, it can be quite a fight to get to the bar. In the way of flashy lighting and so on it isn't the best bar around. For partying you can do better in Newcastle, though this place is a competitor on a Saturday for your custom, if you're in the Bigg Market. There is a fair amount of fixed seating at the sides, which isn't bad, meaning this bar is spacious for dancing as well as providing seating, viewing, and loud music all in one. What it does it does well, it just doesn't consistently pull the crowds in. If you're underage this is a bar worth considering. I went here when I was underage, as if you head north (from Bar M for example, heading uphill), then you turn into the bar entrance 10 metres before you've confronted the bouncers. They are usually chatting away anyway. Music is often a mixture of chart, sometimes they play dance, house, all sorts basically. Mostly stuff you'll have heard of though. One problem with it is that you can't possibly get anywhere near the DJ, so requests are a no no. Overall, this bay suits my personal tastes on a Saturday, but I'd only ever go there early in the night any other night as a starter for the night, since the location is good for this, as it is one of the first you come to in the Bigg Market after getting off at Central Station. 3 stars.
