      A great funky bar

Bar Room Bar in Birmingham has long been a local of mine, since I moved to a city centre apartment (unfortunately just recently vacated to move home to save some money). It is also next door to my old place of work, which increased the frequency of my visits greatly. BRB of course a chain of bars throughout Britain, the Birmingham branch being located centrally in the Mailbox.

The Birmingham branch of Bar Room Bar has recently been done out and now looks very nice inside. A square room, straight ahead is a central bar with booths lining one side of the wall and plenty of bar stools and smaller tables and chairs to perch and sit whilst having a pint. The toilets are located upstairs and excitedly (for me in my excitable about small things state) have a Dyson hand dryer - the ultimate mark of a sophisticated bar!

The atmosphere is relaxed in the day and quite funky and dressed up in the evenings, especially on Thursdays, Fridays and the weekend. Although like all purpose built bars and chains, character is a bit thin on the ground. The music is really funky house and popular dance in the evening, with something more chilled in the day.

Food is good and can be excellent value for money. I'd highly recommend the pizza, salad or sandwich and drink for £6.95 lunch served every day. Tuesdays have two for one pizzas also which range from around £5 - £8 each. The drinks however I am sorry to day, can be extortionate - the wine especially. Unfortunately I am quite picky with my wine and as the house wine leaves somewhat to be desired, I always want something else from the list, but anything half decent can cost anything from £4 - £6 for a small glass only. Pints come in at an average of £3 - £3.50 and spirits are around £5. Unfortunately, it's not cheap. However, on Thursday nights cocktails are 2-4-1 and cost around £6 each which is must better value.

Overall, I like BRB - I like the atmosphere, the food and the central location. I also like the fact that I am pretty much guaranteed to see someone I know in the place. My only advice would be to choose your drinks wisely - although a wide choice is available, the prices leave a lot to be desired.

        .

Now I am always in the Mailbox in Birmingham and I love it there. The shops are way too expensive though so I can never afford to buy anything in there but the real reason I go is for the wonderful bars and restaurants. Bar room bar is one of those and it is great in there so here is why.

Now you find it at the following address:

        Bar room bar.
        166 - 168 Wharfside Street
        The Mailbox
        Birmingham
        B1 1RL

The mailbox is easy to get too by car as there is a huge car park you can park in and also by public transport as you get to Birmingham via the fantastic train and bus links and then you are a five minute walk away from the Mailbox. Bar room bar is at the back by all of the bars and restaurants.

You walk in and there is a very good atmosphere as music is playing and there are fantastic booths situated alongside the walls which believe me are very comfortable and you do feel like you are in another era. Then there are lovely wooden tables and chairs to sit on.

The bar is right in front of you and is very well stocked so you should find any drink you are after. The prices are reasonable with a lemonade being £1.60 last time I had one and a glass of wine at about £3.50 so not too bad at all. The staff are very friendly and will bring your drinks to your table and take your orders from there if you want them to. The bar looks cool with glasses hanging upside down and lots of drinks there!!!

So you can also eat here and the best thing in my opinion is the pizzas. They are about £4.50 for a one person portion and they are delicious. As a lunch time treat in the week it is great! Then you can get sandwiches for about £3 which are lovely too and other hot meals at about £6 each so the prices are very good considering the service is friendly and there are plenty of members of staff about to ask anything.

The music is low enough so you can hear what everybody is saying and you don't have to shout and I think bar room bar is a nice place to go at any time of the day. I have been for lunch, after work for a quick drink and in the evening and every time I have enjoyed it a lot.

Being in the mailbox it has a great atmosphere and I think this is what has made it so popular.

        I recommend to all!!!

        Thanks for reading.

        xxx

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Bar room bar is a really well executed fusion of the chic and the functional. The decor in comparison to some west end bars is not too far off in sophistication but could never be up itself! Great interior design is always something I like in a nice bar as it gives a well measured vibe if done well. The booze is good, the pizzas (and pizzettes - 5 inch snack pizzas) are made with really good bases and well chosen ingredients, and the tables plentiful and well made. The BRB in Battersea has a nice garden, able to seat about 30 people kept warn with gas burners. The mix of value, chic and space is finally topped off with music and regular special nights. DJs play at weekends and jazz nights punctuate the week days. 2 pizzas for one on Mondays is my favourite - suits my appetite and pocket ; ) The crowd varies a great deal here but are always well behaved and happy. A few regulars are like waypoints along the bar, but wen bladered are always good enough to point you in the right direction if not talk to you! Nice staff look after you well but are sometimes prone to being slow. Give this one a whirl!
