I have to say, I am trying to read all kinds of new books at the moment, and a girl at work recommended this book to me. It's not my usual kind of book but not wanting to rule anything out, and as I was pending an arrival from amazon of a new book to read she loaned me her copy of wifey and told me to give it a read. The book centres around Kira who is wife to Ricky - a notorious drug leader. Kira's cousin, Nikki is going through a hard time financially and so gets involved with the drug business and does a drop for Ricky but ends up getting caught. The only solution for Kira to get her cousin Nikki out of prison is to set up Ricky up for capture by the police. As Ricky is not the most faithful husband, life for a wifey like Kira is hard. Will she betray her husband and save her cousin....and is everyone around her really helping her or do they just want the money for themselves? The book took me quite a while, to get into and I kind of skipped through some pages but once I got past chapter 3 I was actually starting to get into the story! As the main aspect in the book, Kira's character was really strong minded but needed a push, and was often really gullible at times. I felt I could relate to her as I wanted her to get one over on her philandering husband and get what I felt she deserved (his money). In terms of the other characters in the book, I felt they weren't very dominating and had so I didn't feel much attachment to them, and I pretty much felt no guilt if her decision was to hand in her husband to the "feds" lol. The writing style isn't excellent, it's a simple book with lot's of slang grammar as it is set in america, it's all dollars and american terminology but it was still quite easy for me to read and understand. I quite liked that it was a feminine book from mainly her point of view and the struggle women can go through in relationships with powerful men - staying for love or money is often the debate. There is a twist at the end was really unexpected and so leaves the book open to a sequel and there are 3 subsequent books, I'm still wifey, life after wifey, still wifey material. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book, and whilst it wasn't groundbreaking literature, it was a good read and quite entertaining. It reminded me a lot of the American reality shows I have watched (Love and hip hop) but in literary form so anyone else who watches the same trashy TV as I do will like this book! I did not pay for this book, but it can be picked up from amazon for £4.49 which is not bad.
