      Good book

I picked this up in a charity shop lately along with 3 other books which cost £2 for 4 books. I had previously read a couple of good books by Sydney Sheldon and was hoping this would be another good read. The cover on my paperback copy differs from that pictured here as my copy is mainly white with blue text. RRP - £6.99 ISBN - 0-00-772452-7 Published - 2000 Pages - 394 (26 chapters) The first thing I want to mention is another of Sidney Sheldon's books, 'Best Laid Plans'. When I started to read this book I was wondering if I had read it before, what it was is that 'The Sky is Falling' uses some of the same characters as 'Best Laid Plans'. Athough this is a new plot and is not part of a series, I would recommend reading 'Best Laid Plans' before this book as it gies you a bit of background story on the characters which makes this one a little more interesting as you feel you already know the characters. Reading them in this one first and later going on to read 'Best Laid Plans' could spoil the earlier book a little. Interestingly, the other book is not mentioned anywhere on the cover of this book. Anyway, onto the plot..... Dana Evvans is a news broadcaster who lives with her son Kemal, who she adopted and brought home to America after rescuing him when doing news coverage on a war in Sarajevo. Kemal lost an arm after a bombing and has behavioural issues as well as his physical impairment which feature a lot throughout the book. Dana suspects his behaviour is a reaction to being teased but he wont admit to this to try and protect her feelings, which leads to him being expelled from school and many child minders walking out on them. Dana has a boyfriend Jeff, who also works at the news station as a sports reporter, when his ex wife turns up this causes some jealousy from Dana and as his ex becomes reliant on him during a tough time in her life it causes more worry for Dana. The main plot however, is that Dana becomes suspicious when she is reporting on the death of a billionaire, she finds it a bit suspicious that his entire family has died within the space of a year in various "accidents" and she decides to do a bit of investigating and see if something more sinister may have caused their demise. One part of the story I don't like is that Dana seems to be the only person in the word that suspects foul play and it seems like everyone around her thinks it's a ridiculous far fetched theory that something else could have caused the deaths. In my opinion it would be the first thing anyone with half a brain would think if a whole family died one by one in accidents within a short space of time, but in this book it's as if Dana is amazing for making some kind of link. Dana then travels from city to city across the world meeting people who had contact with each member of the family around the time of their deaths. This also annoys me as, although both are mentioned, it seems like it's perfectly normal to get on a plane going from country to country dropping work and leaving your son (who is going through a difficult time) with a new housekeeper who only started working for you that day. Aside from the couple of points which annoy me I did enjoy this book. It was really easy to read and I got through it in no time. Even though there are lots of characters mentioned it is not hard to keep track of who is who. There are enough twists and turns, along with Dana's personal life to keep in interesting throughout. Most people will probably have figured out who the 'bad guy' is by the end of the book, but I did suspect others at different stages of the book and there are still a couple of surprises in store. I don't think this was one of the best or worst books I have read but I enjoyed this book and would recommend it, especially to those who read 'Best Laid Plans'.

The Sky is Falling Author: Sydney Sheldon Pages: 394 Sydney Sheldon has written some very popular fiction thrillers including the 'The other side of Midnight', Rage of Angels, Master of the Game, Bloodline, Windmills of the Gods , The Doomsday Conspiracy among the others. Most of his novels have been number one International bestsellers. Some of his books have been made into highly successful Television mini-series. He has also written screenplay for scores of motion pictures including 'Easter Parade' starring Judy Garland. Sydney Sheldon is now included in the Guiness Book of Records as ' The Most Translated Author'. About the book 'The sky is falling' ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ According to the author's note this work of fiction is based on actual facts. Sidney Sheldon based his book on the reports of theft of Plutonium and the secret underground organization and the underground city Krasnoyarsk -26, one of thirteen closed cities engaged in Nuclear production, located in Siberia , 2000 miles from Moscow.Since its creation in 1958 , it has produced more than forty five tons of weapons- grade Plutonium.Although two of its reactors were shut down in 1992, one remains active currently producing half a ton of Plutonium a year, which can be used to make Atomic Bombs..The many controversies that surrounded this subject made Sheldon choose this plot for this novel. The Story ~~~~~~ It is the story of Dana Evans, 27 years old Beautiful young Anchorwoman with a Washinton TV network, back from war torn Sarajevo. Dana is still being traumatised and haunted by the horrifying experiences that she underwent in Sarajevo. She brings back and adopts Kemal, a 12 year old orphaned boy from Sarajevo, having lost his entire family and an arm to the bloody war. Dana manages her busy and demanding work schedule along with trying to help Kemal acclamatise to a normal and a very different surrounding back in Washington, besides trying to find enough time to spend with her Good looking Boyfriend Jeff Connor. Jeff Connor , a former All-star pitcher , after an accident had taken up a career as a sports reporter with WTN where Dana too worked. The TV Channel WTN is owned by an International movie tycoon Elliot Cromwell . Dana's Interview and newscast on the channel was different from others and it was a great hit with the viewers. A chance meeting with the young , handsome and successful Gary Winthrop, a prince charming of America , a member of one of the country's most prominent families gave an opportunity for Dana to interview him. If America had a Royal family the Charismatic Winthrops would easily wear the crown. But in less than a year all five members of the Winthrop family , including Gary are killed in a series of Freak accidents . Gary is supposedly killed by thieves who were after his prized possession of paintings. Dana sees something sinister behind their deaths and begins an investigation with the approval of her News channel, that yields evidence she could hardly believe. She realises that Taylor Winthrop, Gary's father and head of the Winthrop family , who had an impeccable reputation, having done everything to he could do to make the society a better place had some dark secrets. Dana's search results in a cat and mouse chase that leads her through half a dozen countries in search of a remorseless killer. As she closes in on her suspects the shocking secrets Dana unearths puts her and her son Kemal in danger and Dana becomes the hunted.. My views on this book ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ This is another very interesting plot by Sydney Sheldon. It has all the ingredients to make it a super suspenseful and super hit novel like his previous books. On the plus side, it starts off very well with a lot of promise with the suspense building up page by page. Dana's investigations which keep her busy and her boyfriend Jeff kept busy by his ex-wife Rachel because of her life threatening illness. The two plots run side by side with Dana feeling low and wondering as to what is happening to her relationship with Jeff? Dana is forced to face the calamity all by herself, and this with the added problem and responsibility of taking care of Kemal. I think it was a nice touch, having this child in the plot . There is a deviation from the plot at the beginning as we read accounts of Kemal's horrifying tale in Sarajevo. The suspense is well kept right until the last pages, as Dana laboriously collects her evidence bit by bit. But the most disappointing part of the book is its climax which falls somewhat flat after all that build up. I personally feel that Sydney Sheldon is nowhere as good as he was in his earlier novels like 'Rage of Angels' , 'The other side of Midnight' etc The depth is totally lacking in this novel. It turned out to be quite average in the end. I wish he had taken care to see that there is the right amount of balance to make the plot believable. The characters are weak especially Jeff's , who seems to appear and disappear mainly in conversations with Dana at regular frequencies. Sydney Sheldon's central characters are mostly ladies- women with strength, and , Dana is no doubt such a character though she does not come anywhere near that of Jennifer parker's in ' Rage of Angels'.. I am not saying that the book is a total write off or any such thing , or that there is any lack of suspense or action. There is plenty of that , but somehow it reads more like a film script not a gripping novel and because of that it fails to have the right amount of impact. In fact i have noticed that with many of his later books- as if he has written the story solely with the purpose of making a film out of it.. On the whole , i can conclude that it is an absorbing book that one can read while travelling or while waiting to board a flight. I wouldn't read it a second time like i did with his other books that i mentioned earlier. Those were far superior in quality and content..

Dana Evans sketched by Sidney Sheldon, comes to life like a real character

MASSES ARE WRONG ALWAYS !! THE SKY IS FALLING BY SIDNEY SHELDON 0-00-711481-8 Rs.100 ( US$ 2), There was pharaoh with his chariots and many lords with standing armies and a palace of gold, MOSES had his staff and fire and brimstone speech, with a few bonded followers. All masses believe in Pharaoh, I will be with Pharaoh, if he is present today in front of me. Jesus with his fire and brimstone speech could not convert except 12, the masses remained against him, I will be with the masses if he was present today. BUT I am wrong as wrong as calling day night and night day, I have learnt my lesson after passing of long time, much loss of life and after much violence, I learnt that these 2 holy persons must be followed in their entirety, you cannot follow them in parts you like and leave other part. BUT truth do not come to us humans without difficulty, toil, struggle, truth needs inquisition to overcome, then only masses will realize the inquisition was bad and the sufferers are good. This novel is one such story DANA EVANS is alone in believing Taylor Winthrop was murdered, his wife was murdered, their eldest son was murdered, his daughter was murdered, their younger son was murdered and made to look like a accident of robbery. The whole masses of 3 to 4 nations believed all these people died of accidents, the police officers of these countries, the newspapers, the television channels, the investigation teams all files were closed believing these deaths to be accidents. Dana Evens has a instinct, she does not go with the masses, she is a news reader on a big news television network. She adopted a son rescued from Sarajevo, his name is Kemal, this woman has a heart it gives her conviction and courage. What can a small person like me say about the writing of Sidney Sheldon, he is a master of his art, I have read over the years many novels written by him, one thing definitely stands out in his writing he elicits interest of the reader, HOW to get a mild grip of the reader is a art all of us must learn if we want to be writers, even if we don’t want to be writers we can still aspire to inculcate Sidney Sheldon's writing abilities. Its a goal we will not regret. How good it will be if we are just a love letters writer but still have the art of gripping our readers (hehehe) The most pure thing in Sidney Sheldon writing is his sentences are short, his paragraph are short, he just does not go about describing the co lour of eyes, or the shape of the nose, but his description carries a kinetic energy just below his worlds, there is action springing below his words, he says : grey eyes, sharp straight nose, eyes roaming right and left in his own office, as if he is searching for something. See what movement he has in his words, we are moving in italics or bold letters or just plain common fonts, we are moving definitely, ONE page written by Sidney Sheldon can take you all over the major cities of Europe, all major landmarks outlined and his story is sprinting fast. Must I tell you this writer deserves a Knighthood. He is a University fully loaded open to everyone, I will read Sheldon to learn the art of writing, Study Sheldon, We will surely know what sells, he has sold 25 million books of his writing, he has sold many screenplays, he has sold many serials, he has sold many movies, he has become Millionaire just by writing. He is at the top of his trade, he is there since 30 years. Oh boy !!! what a achievement. I know D.H.Lawrance can write, but does he write as well for a Indian, Japanese, Belgian, Canadian, Hong Kong, South African, Ugandan, I think Sidney Sheldon writing is understood all over the world without a hassle. He is easy to understand, some places in India Sheldon is considered a writer to start reading to cultivate the art of reading. Sheldon is great because, he knows how to sell his work, one last point places and people are so well described by Sheldon, we don’t feel like skipping the lines to just jump past them, be it Rome, Washington, Chicago, South of France, Milan all these places are inked flowingly, I wonder if there is any other writer who can do it as good as Sheldon. Without writing about female anatomy or the ACT between couples, he still makes his writing interesting and very likeable, its like some of our present day commercial writers can learn a lot from him. READ THE BOOK : THE SKY IS FALLING, YOU WILL KNOW FIRST HAND. Yo if crown is writing then Jewel is Sidney Sheldon!!!!.

        • "Some lose ends"

A TV anchorwoman from Washington, DC is convinced that a series of murders are linked and she travels the world to prove it. However, the closer she comes to discovering the truth, the closer she comes to endangering her own life. ‘The Sky Is Falling’ is an incredibly easy to read. Since there are huge gaps between the paragraphs, the novel is actually a lot shorter than it appears. In addition, the majority of the plotting is done through dialogue and there are very few descriptive, or even long, paragraphs. To me, it did not ring quite true that this TV anchorwoman could travel the world with such ease, but apart from that, it is an enjoyable enough book. However, I felt that the ending seemed rushed and there seemed to be a few loose ends that I would have liked to see explained. The plot was interesting and although the book could have been better, it could have been a lot worse.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

This is Sidney Sheldon’s latest novel, which has been highly acclaimed by the New York Times. It was first published in hardback form in 2000 and now is widely available in paperback too. It is published by HarperCollins at a recommended retail price of £5.99 but in fact I bought mine from Woolworth’s for £3.84. The story follows Dana Evans, a 27 year- old anchorwoman from an American TV network, who has just returned home to Washington after covering the violence in Sarajevo. With her she brings back Kemal, a Serbian orphan whom she plans to adopt, after her marriage to Jeff, a former baseball player, now a sports reporter. Following an interview with Gary Winthorp, a leading American celebrity and Ambassador, who is later murdered in his home, Dana investigates a series of other deaths. These are the deaths of 4 other members of his family within a short period of time. These deaths all appeared to be accidents at the time - a house fire,a skiing accident and a car accident. The trail takes her all over the world in the search for the truth and a killer. She makes some strong allies along the way but are they all that they appear to be? In doing so she eventually puts herself, her associates and the life of her young charge into danger as she slowly begins to unravel the reality. I cannot tell you much more about the story as it will definitely lead me to reveal more than I should, all I will say is that the characters are brought to life excellently and the book in general is very hard to put down, I managed to read it in two nights. The only question you will ask yourself is why the police didn’t find the deaths suspicious, but then again there wouldn’t have been a story then. For those of you who have read other Sidney Sheldon novels, you will find that the plot is fairly predictable for him, with the usual twists and turns. But if you are looking for a crime novel that is easy to follow, then this is the book for you. I personally have the concentration span of a goldfish and so these books are ideal for me, very easy reading. Other masterpieces from Sidney Sheldon include: Bloodline, The Best Laid Plans, Master of the Game, The Stars Shine Down and Rage of Angels. In his career he has won a Tony Award and an Academy Award as well as having some of his publications made into mini television series. He is also responsible for writing the screenplays to many motion pictures including Annie Get Your Gun and has created four long running television series which include Hart to Hart which was a 1970’s favourite. He is even in the Guinness Book of Records as the most translated author so he must be doing something right. I picked up this book out of sheer boredom, as my mum had just finished reading it and was gushing as to how good a writer Sidney Sheldon is. Now to me, he's the guy who devised "I dream of Jeannie" (As any one who has watched a large amount of daytime tv will know.) I remeber reading one of his books before and quite enjoying it, so I thought this one would be the perfect thing to read while sunbathing on a particularly sunny afternoon. I won't give you all the plot, because it will spoil the ending when you read it, and I hate that when someone does it to me! Dana Evans is an anchorwoman on a washington TV station and has returned from covering the war in Sarajevo. She's covering a particularly strange story of five members of the same family all dying in the same year in five gruesome accidents. The family in question is the Winthrops, the most well known and influential family in washington. Dana seems to think it is a bit odd that the whole family has been killed in the space of a year, but the rest of the world seems to think it is just a series of tragic coincidences. She starts to investigate the deaths, with the idea that the family have been killed off in some sort of conspiracy. The more she delves into the family's history, the stranger it becomes. The family are like the Waltons, everyone who she speaks to loved and respected them and it seems they had no enemies whatsoever. Her investigations lead her a bit too close to the truth and suddenly her life is in danger too..... Danas trail leads her all over the world, to Paris, Italy and finally to Russia, where a nailbiting climax brings the story to a close. If that wasn't enough for Dana to cope with, the poor woman has to deal with a one armed refugee, a newscaster boyfriend and a model ex girlfriend to contend with. The story moves quickly and you end up wondering who to trust, there are allies and foes at every turn of the page. People in the story whose characters you are sure of end up suprising you completely and doing things you would never have of expected. The story is standard Sheldon fayre and his fans will love it. Plenty of suspense and action to fill all 394 pages. I feel the book is quite similar in format to some of Sheldons other books, but that is not a bad thing. He has a tried and tested formula which allows him to write a bestseller every time. If you are wanting an intelectually challenging read, then this book is not for you. But if you can use your imagination, let yourself get carried away with the story and its characters, you are in for one hell of a ride.

In this instance it is a TV anchorwoman from Washington DC. All her investigative instincts tell her that a brutal series of murders are linked - and she travels the world to prove it.
