Going on holiday for the first time as a parent of a three month old baby, the irony of my holiday preparations did not fail to strike me. Sunglasses for me, sut hat with numerous flaps for Baby Frank; skimpy bikini for me, full sunsuit with legs and arms for Baby Frank; factor 15 SPF for me, factor 50 SPF (don't they make it in 60SPF!?) for Baby Frank. And so on.
We had decided that we would take our Phil and Ted's Sport buggy on holiday, because although it's not the lightest pushchair in the world, it's robust and we thought it may survive the journey. It is also where we imagined Baby Frank may be spending a lot of time on holiday as walking would be our main mode of transport whilst abroad, and she loves it. We also love the versatility of the pushchair so Baby Frank could lie flat if she wanted a sleep or sit up if, like her parents, she wanted to take in the views.
So, having decided on the Phil and Ted's, we now had to sunproof it. My husband saw these UV covers online and bought one for £25 from Amazon. I must admit, I thought it looked ridiculous from the picture he showed me, and made one or two (rather witty in my opinion) jibes about how over-protective parents can be.
This mesh is tailored to fit the Phil & Teds Sport pushchair. It has a UV filtering of 81%, and the mesh will also keep the insects away from your child. It is suitable for when your Phil & Teds Sport is being used as a double, but we used it even though we only have one child because it covers the lying down option, whereas the single one would not. Also, we thought it a good idea to invest in a double one so we can use it when Baby Frank has a Sibling Frank.
When the UV mesh arrived, I chortled away to myself as Mr Frank put it on the pushchair. It was a very good fit, and attaches just the same as the raincover; two poppers at the front, two toggles to attach it under the frame, and two strips of poppers either side at the back. I was able to put it on easily as well which I was pleased about as sometimes I struggle to work out pushchairs and related items!
The mesh went back in the handy packet in which it arrived. This has two straps on it which can be attached to the handle of the pushchair, which I thought was a brilliant idea, as we are always struggling for space in the little compartment under the seat.
On holiday the mesh cover really came into its own and we used it everyday. It was such a weight off our minds to know that Baby Frank was well protected from the sun under it. We still took other precautions (suncream, sunsuit etc) but it was good to have our own portable shade with us. We did get lots of funny looks from locals and other holiday makers, probably because these meshes are not yet very common. Also, it is quite hard to see the baby through it and so I wondered whether they thought we were using it to transport stolen goods or something untoward!
