I wanted a cordless drill as I have just moved into a new home and had a considerable amount of DIY to do. I looked around a variety of DIY shops and settled on the B&D Firestorm 18v Cordless drill from B&Q (£89). It caught my eye as I needed both cordless freedom and the hammer drill option that this provided. It was also from a decent brand name which I've had good experiences with in the past. The pack came with 2 batteries and a fst charger, a double ended screwdriver attachment and a detachable handle for stability in high power jobs. I've now used the drill almost every day for a couple of months and it has never let me down. It is well balanced as both a screwdriver and as a drill. I've used a couple of cordless drills now and others tend to be nose or back heavy with the weight of the battery, but this is excellent. The battery LCD meter is a bit of a gimmick, but it does exactly what it says on the tin - it tells the user how much charge is left. The hammer drilling is excellent, it packs a good punch, even through hard brick surfaces, whilst the adjustable torque allows for smooth and controlled screwdriving. I've used it on all sorts of jobs including screwing loft boards down and building flat pack furniture, as well as the usual drilling holes into walls for shelves etc. It has proved excellent and 100% reliable. My only gripe is that I wish I would remember to bring the second battery into the loft when I've spent an evening screwing boards down and the battery runs low. In summary, excellent, well balanced powerful cordless drill. I'd recommend it.

I recently bought a Black & Decker 12volt Firestorm drill with torch set and am very impressed with it. This was a special offer bundled pack comprising of plastic storage case, charger, drill, torch and 2 batteries. The torch & extra battery were free, making it very good value for money. The torch takes the same battery as the drill and gives a strong beam. The drill is well made from abs plastic, this should make it fairly resilient to knocks but only time will tell. The 12v batteries give a reasonable worklife and can be recharged in 3 hours, the second battery was a real bonus as you can carry on working whilst the other recharges. The drill features a keyless chuck, forward & reverse, 22 torque settings ( not sure why you'd want that many ) and a neat little screwdriver bit which is stored in the top of the drill. This drill gives enough power for most jobs around the house. It will only tackle light masonary drilling however as there is no hammer action. It will drill into brick etc but without hammer action it takes a bit longer and the drill bit heats up and will wear out a lot faster, but cordless drills with hammer action tend to be a lot more expensive. Drilling into wood and screwdriving are all performed very easily with this drill. The variable speed is easily controlled by the trigger switch, this makes screwdriving effortless. One last nice touch is the use of red plastic in the drill casing, you might not like the colour but you won't be able to lose it easily. Overall a very good drill for diy use.
