      Great player from yesteryear

I purchased this MP3 player around five years ago, and I was told it was one of the last ones produced in that line. I purchased this particular model as I heard horror stories about IPODs breaking after a month and corrupting files. After research and my past experiences with the Sony brand I decided that this was the way to go. The player supports MP3, Wave files as well Atrac3 and Areac3+ which are variants on the format used on minidisks. The Atrac3 codec is tiny about a tenth the size of an MP3 with more or less the same quality; the format was also designed to save battery life too meaning that this player has a huge battery life of 40 hours. The sound quality of this model was unrivalled at the time and probably still is. The sound is clear and faithful. It contains an EQ section should you want to use it. Also there is a level restrictor which can be turned on to help prevent noise induced hearing loss which is becoming a common occurrence. The screen has the ability to work either vertical or horizontal; although this isn't as slick as most gadgets are now back then it was pretty nifty. The most impressive quality to me is its durability and reliability. I've dropped this player more times than I can remember even a few times in water (don't test this) and it still works and on top of this its 5 years old. While there aren't really many feature especially when you compare to say an Ipod touch this is still a player to keep an eye on as it's a high quality reliable player that will last many years.

      Good try

This is another great Sony MP3 player which can hold 20GB of music files. When the music files are converted into Sony's attrac form, it means that this MP3 player can hold up to 22.500 music tracks, no that is a lot of music. The player itself seems like a bit of a brick but it in not that heavy. The basic shape of the player lets it fit into your pocket easily so you can carry it around without requiring huge pockets. The overall design of this MP3 is quite attractive and modern. I extremely like what they did with the buttons to get the design. The screen is in black and white but it is clearly laid out with track listing, artist name and album clearly visible. The NW-HD5H does not require a dock to connect to the computer but again similar to other Sony audio products, it does require the user to use Sonicstage software to convert your MP3 files to attracc form before it can transfer it to the NW-HD5H. Again similar it takes roughly 25 seconds to upload a single track. The sound quality is great and the supplied Sony headphones are good, but you can purchase better headphones if you are willing to fork out extra. The built in battery is very good. It can play non-stop music for almost 24 hours before you need to recharge it useing the supplied mains cable. Overall this is a great MP3 with a huge memory capacity. It was great when it was first released but maybe not so much in todays word. It does not have a colour screen so no picture viewer and no video playback and certainly no WiFi connectivity to access your facebook.:( Also on shopping.co under the same name dixin123

Reliable, Easy to use 20GB mp3 which still performs well

The best Mp3 player in 2005 in my opinion. The time of the Sony NW-HD5's release, the iPod Nano had only just been released and the 20GB iPod still had a black & white screen. I got this mp3 player as a gift in October 2005 and it is still working till this day. At the time the pricing was around £200 for a 20GB iPod, so instead of following the crowd I thought I'd try something different and purchased one of these. 20GB is more than enough, since purchasing I have transferred FULL albums, not having to worry about using up the space with its storage capacity. Straight out of the package I was very impressed, the Sony came in a quite heavy metal casing which felt really durable and an effective bright LCD screen. Gloss black buttons on the front in a Gameboy like setup made it strangely adorable. It wasn't THE best looking mp3 out, but in comparison to my friends iPod nano which screen broke the Sony was superior quality and a lot easier to use. I had heard about the sound being quiet because of a limiter, but after researching how to unlock the sound limit the mp3 player came alive! The earphones supplied were pretty poor to be honest, they were around £7 versions you would find in any high street store. This didn't bother me because I already had a better pair of headphones already. In the package the accessories were; a wall charger (which iPod didn't give as standard with there players), USB cable to transfer music from computer, CD with PC drivers and a velvety storage pouch. For Sony, I was quite impressed with them including so much equipment instead of you having to source parts yourself. The Sonicstage software supplied with the player is the only negative to the package, It isn't great, quite RAM heavy, leaves little options of how to manage your music . It isn't a useful hub like iTunes, but IS necessary to transfer music to your mp3 as you can't drag and drop the mp3 files. Having owned this player for nearly 4 years and dropping it about 100 times it's stayed strong and never snapped or cracked anywhere. The metal casing will easily outlast anything else on the player as it is military strong. The screen and hard drive have minor faults which cause them to cease working for a minute and it requires turning off and on again to get it working again. So if you see one of these on eBay for a bargain price, it's a great piece of technology that does the job that is a 20GB jukebox in your palm.

        Worth checking out

This is superb mp3 player from Sony, which is definitely worth a look at. Given that it is quite a few years old now, it would definitely be worth trying to track down because I would imagine that it would be very cheap. Like most things, this device has its pros and cons but before I go into these I want to point out one thing which can either be a pro or a con depending on your outlook on things. This is an mp3 player and not an iPod and this was one of my reasons for buying because I did not want to follow the masses into getting the same mp3 player (I unfortunately since have however). If you are set on an iPod however then there's no way this will satisfy you. The pros to this device are its size, design and sound quality. The size is perfect- not ridiculously small, but comfortable in any reasonably sized pocket- this gives it a very light weight also. Design as you can see from the pictures is pretty neat, though it won't suit everyone. Finally and most importantly, the sound quality is very good, better than iPods in my opinion.

An excellent player that doesn't breakdown and will hold pretty much all collections no matter how l

This player is a genuine contender for the Ipod. I got mine a few years ago in Singapore when it first came out. Though it says it only holds 5000 songs, that is in MP3 format, if you use the Atrac format provided you can get around 13000 songs on it. The player comes in several colours (red, Black & Silver) and though it lacks some of the functions of an Ipod, games etc, if you are just looking for something to listen to music too, it surpasses the Ipod and other competitors for sheer reliability. Battery life is long and doesn't fade much as time goes by. It has several sound options and sound is clear. The headphones provided are of Sony's usual high standard and it is quite a bit cheaper than the Ipod. For the amount of songs you can fit on it, you would pay about a 100 pounds more for an ipod. Though it lacks a colour screen and video features like some of the newer players on the market. It is a very reliable player that doesn't tend to go wrong. Whilst Ipods have a tendency to break down, any system errors I've has have righted themselves just by turning it back on. Overall it's an efficient and stylish player all round and a great choice for music lovers. would highly recommend.

        Great player. Buy it now!

I recently bought a Sony NW-HD5 after my Creative Zen Micro's headphone jack stopped working correctly (it was, in fact, the second time it had happened) so I went for a company I can usually trust. It's difficult to review everything about a product like this without making it a pain to read so I'll go for points : Pro's - 20gb. You can't have enough space for the future! - Great design. Stylish and feels more expensive than it actually is. - Easy to navigate. I actually prefer the simple click buttons to any touch-sensitive wheel or pad. The menus on the screen are easy to find your way around and artists/albums are laid out in the standard way. - Light. Considering the copacity of the drive you hardly notice the player. - Scratch free. Unlike the ipod. - Great sound. Everyone knows Sony do sound better than anyone and this product is no exception. - Removable/Rechargable battery. Con's - SonicStage. The software for transferring songs onto the player is slow and can be a pain to use. It hasn't bothered me too much but it's worst point is.... - Converting WMA's. Converting all your tracks to the ATRAC format can take a ridiculously long time. Not a problem for some people but half my collection was WMA! -Lack of extra's. Some people may be dissapointed by the lack of bonuses such as alarm clock and FM Radio. So there you have it. There are downsides to this player but I feel the pro's heavily outweigh the con's and I wouldn't swap it for anything else. Other things that are expected, such as being able to charge the player though a PC (via USB) and various equalizer settings, are also worth mentioning. I've tried to be unbiased in my review but despite the con's I can't recommend this player enough. PS. On the European version the volume level has been dropped due to legal problems in America, to solve this problem simply do a google search (ie. NW-HD5 volume) and the answer will be revealed!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Easy to replace batteries, small and light.

The NW-HD5 is the smallest and lightest MP3 player of its class; HDD-based with 20gig capacity. Aesthetic-wise, its size and slick casing coating helps it to be even cuter than any other player out on the market. (Note: Strangely, it is actually suppose to be a few grams heavier than its previous incarnation, the NW-HD3). As for its battery life, the stated 40 hours might be a little exaggeration on Sony's part, an inspect of the fine print would note that this only holds when playing back files compressed at 48kbps ATRAC3Plus compression. The user manual states 30 hours for playback of normal 128kbps MP3. Even estimating it conservatively and giving it only 20 hours, it's still 8 hours longer than a 20gig Ipod which lasts for around 12 hours. The supplied Li-ion battery is also user removable and replaceble. You are suppose to be able to walk into any Sony store and buy a replacement battery once you run it down, removing the need to send the player back to a service center to get it replaced. As far as I know, no other MP3 player of its class offers this useful feature. As for Sonicstage, the software used to manage your songs on your PC and your NW-HD5 ... lots of negative things has been said about it. In fact,Sonicstage isn't as evil as most people make it out to be. Don't expect iTunes, but it's still useable. I would have preferred the Samsung approach of just treating the player as a HDD and allowing users to organise their own playlists with directories.Treat yourself and buy one,Comet are selling them for £175,which is probably the cheapest you will get.

Definatly a good alternative to the ipod

I got this MP3 as an alternative to the IPod. It holds just as many songs (10,000), really easy to use with your artists, tracks, playlists etc etc.. Really compact, much smaller than the normal ipod and avaliable in a few different colours. As well as being cheaper. If you dont care about the whole ipod craze then this is definatly worth a look. The sony software is not as good as itunes but hasnt provided any great problems. Dont know why more people dont have it.
