      A real classic, still a great mp3 player to own.

      This ipod shuffle represented my first experience of the "i" world, I was given it as a gift for Christmas 2006, second hand but still with all its packaging and details. Back in "those days" mp3 players were all new and groovy and it came in a much bigger box then than a much bigger ipod comes in today. It needed a CD to install software onto PCs and a thick instruction book to lead us through this new and crazy world!

      Quite quickly, I was a complete convert to the ipod world and soon bought an ipod nano to give me more control over my music collection, not to mention space for more tunes, but I still have this shuffle and it's still going strong, my partner always borrows it when we go on holidays, for the flight.

      Basic's best!
      ~~~~~~~~
      The shuffle looks like an oversized USB stick, and to a certain extent, that's what it is. The end of the shuffle comes off and reveals a USB connector which plugs directly into the computer to manage music or to charge it. A nifty, simple design feature with one less cable to lose or get mixed up with the myriad of other cables we are always accummulating.
      The other features of the shuffle are equally straightforward. On the front a simple wheel arrangement, pressing in the appropriate area (marked with grey images) to skip, forward, rewind, adjust volume, play and/or pause. On the back a large slide switch to switch off, or to switch on to play songs in sequence or to play them randomly. Again, the relevant selection is indicated by pale grey images. Underneath that switch is a small panel which you press to check the battery - a tiny light flashes to indicate its power level when the panel is held down.
      And that's it!
      So what's missing?
      ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
      There are no bells or whistles on this little piece of kit, but that means less things to go wrong. The only obvious thing missing is any sort of belt clip - this shuffle needs to be in a pocket to keep it safe. There is a hole through the top to thread a neck loop through, but this is something I've never used, and if your preference is to use this for the gym then the lack of a clip or the alternative of the ipod waving around on a neck loop may well be an issue.

      The only other thing blatantly missing of course, is capacity. At 512mb this is full and has 113 songs on it. That said, 113 songs is still a pretty decent mix if you set it up in advance of a holiday for instance or rotate your collection.

      Verdict
      ~~~~~
      The best endorsement for this shuffle is that it's still going strong when later models I've owned since have given up the ghost after a couple of years of use. Battery life is excellent, and as a basic mp3 player there's nothing to complain about.
      Sound quality I feel is more determined by the headphones than the player, and with the same headphones as I use for my latest ipod Touch, the quality is perfectly fine. Anyone keen to use equalizers or advanced sound management will likely not be considering this shuffle anyway. Speaking of the ear phones, this ipod came with the original Apple ear buds, which I found incredibly uncomfortable and quickly replaced.
      If you can pick one of these up used from ebay or amazon cheaply (and they're plentiful) then I would wholeheartedly recommend it for a second device, or for when you're exercising and don't want to risk dropping a larger (and costlier) version. The white plastic is robust and hard to mark or scratch, it shiny so doesn't get grubby - I don't see how this would really ever look aged or dated.
      It would also be great if you're looking for something for a child, it's quite robust and wouldn't object to being dropped from a low height or being covered in chocolatey fingers (the shiny plastic is easy to wipe clean).
      One thing which may be a problem with this shuffle is the pale grey markings indicating the functions, these won't be easy for everyone to see, and in particular the markings for the slide switch on the back are quite thin and feint.
      Even now, it still looks good, and in my opinion it's just not dated in the same way that older versions of other ipods with screens have done. Being a "first generation", with such a basic design it will remain a classic, and I'd even class it as quite an iconic mp3 player to own.
        A brilliant design (even if it can hardly hold any music)!
        Oh Apple, the years when MP3 players had 1GB a the VERY MAX! I still have this player along with my other shuffle and they both still work! (which can be said something I think) I also own a few creative MP3 players and I shall review those in due course, but back to this shuffle - Great design!
        Apple concentrate too much on 'touch screens' which although is great, I do miss the time when you can just shuffle thought random tunes and never know where you may end up! I also loved the design of those and I feel like the smaller MP3 players are a little too small...
        The headphones are awfull with these, along with the later models so I would always suggest paying for a good pair of headphones! I have a monster pair which I will review later.
        When I was looking through my junk draw (of which I found this) I was surprised to find that the white still hadn't discoloured. I find with alot of brands that this happens ALL the time, but here it was still the white/cream I remember!
        Apple are great for MP3 players, or should I say MP4 - thats the format they are right?!
        No-one can match the sound quality of apple products!!!
        Great value for money
        I was given a 1st Gen apple ipod shuffle for my birthday some years ago, i still have it and it still works perfectly, a great example of the high standard apple sets in the world of the MP3 player. The ipod Shuffle was very small, and very easy to find somewhere to put it, the controls were very basic, theres a slider at the back for on, off and shuffle, and the controls at the front for play/pause, next song, last song and volume controls, to put the ipod on hold you held the play button for 4 seconds and the top of the ipod would flash orange. There was also a small button you could press to check battery levels, green for good, orange for poor.
        The ipod shuffle, although basic i feel is one of the most superier ipods ever built, apple designed something small, easy to use, cheap and basic and it worked brilliantly, as i said my ipod shuffle still works and i've had it for at least 6 years now.
        Get one if you want no nonsense music, but get it cheap
        I was given one of these ipods free when I opened my back account about five or six years ago so i'm not sure how much it is worth. At the time I thought it was a good deal as my peers all seemed to just get rail passes, nowhere near as flash as an ipod. However when you actually look what this ipod is and what it does its not particularly that good.
        The shuffle was never meant to compete on features with its bigger brothers but it lack in even the simplest of interfaces making it just not particularly good to use. The things the shuffle has going for it is its light, possibly one of the lightest. It works as a flash drive, and plugs straight in without a cable. It plays the usual file formats (mp3 etc.) and charges via usb also the battery last a long time a couple of days with medium use. The downsides are the lack of interface mentioned earlier, the lack of any options, limited controls, limited space for songs and the lack of ability to tell what song is on.
        If these cost a couple of quid then these are good for jogging or use for storing uni work or something such as that, however if they are really expensive like most Apple products you may be better getting a generic brand. All in all it does what it is meant to but not much else.
        get one of the newer ipod models, shuffle or classic
        This was my first MP3 player, and i was shocked at how small it is. I am aware than there are new models of ipod shuffle, each one pushing the limits of size, but this model is in no way big.
        It is slightly bigger than a standard USB memory stick, and has controls on the back for "on" "shuffle" or "loop", and buttons on the front for play and pause, volume and skip track. These controls can sometimes be confusing with no screen to show what is happening on the ipod. This can be annoying to know which song you are on if it doesn't have a distinctive beginning few seconds.
        This mp3 player can be put in any pocket and is unnoticeable in both its size and weight, so is perfect for gym and other exercise. It is only 512 mb, which isn't that many songs in good quality, but itunes can be set to put different songs on each synch, meaning when it is charged in your computer, it will have a new selection of songs every time.
        It is provided with the standard apple headphones, which are of fair quality but i would advise spending more to get the full music quality. Although this is a good product, i feel it has been beaten by the new models, which boast higher capacities, longer battery lives and physicaly smaller devices, up to the brand new model which is smaller than the headphones they are supplied with.
          My first and well loved iPod
          Apples Birthchild for the Shuffle!
          I received this at Christmas time a few years ago from my father and got all excited, as Apple back then was a very expensive brand and was quite rare to see people getting ipods!
          Now days, I have moved up the chain from a iPod Shuffle -> iPod Touch -> to my current iPhone 3G. Lets just say Apple has that charm!
          Well the ipod itself was considered a pretty decent model, it has no screen but controls on the front. On the back there is a Shuffle Switch. The top could be taken off and used as a USB Drive/Connection with Itunes.
          The iPods Sound quality was very good too, and this is why I have stuck with them all this time. The headphones included were amazing to me at that time, as I always used to have the free ones, so the Apple headphones really showed to me!
          Transfering the music was easy, downloading itunes, updating firmware and Drag and Dropping!
          I specially liked the idea of it also being a USB Drive, which my iPhone can not do without 3rd Party Software.
          The size of it didnt concern me as my music collection was small back then!
          Yes we are in 2009, and yes more and more gadgets are coming out.. But just remember, Apple iPod Shuffle 512MB was the start of something special.
          And I will never forget opening that present and finding a well loved iPod Shuffle!
          This iPod is the start of the shuffle series. Personally, I loved it, it had everything I wanted from an MP3 player. Its small, portable and reliable. Especially the last of these, reliability, the shuffle just has a sense about it that it won't break. And for the time I had it (4 years) it worked perfectly. I found the shuffle was most useful during journeys, or anything that is boring really.
          The iPod Shuffle claims to hold 125 songs, however this is based on the fact that a song is 5 minutes long. Obviously, most aren't, I managed to fit 152 songs on to it, but it was filled to its maximum. Despite having no screen, the ipod shuffle is very easy to use. In fact it only has 5 buttons used to work it. Not having a screen is a big disadvantage, but you have to remember that it wasn't built to be an MP4 player or anything. When I had the shuffle, I only put my favourites on it and it worked out ok. If a song comes on that you don't like, then you just skip it and 90% of the time the next song will be fine. Anyway, since it doesn't have a screen, the costs and therefore prices are kept to a minimum. A brand new iPod Shuffle 512mb will only cost around £15.
          So overall worthwhile if you can live without the screen, if memory is a problem then you can upgrade to the 1gb version. Its cheap, reliable and easy to use: worth the money!
            Disadvantages
            Average for the price!
            As far as MP3 players go this is at the low end of the market. The storage capacity is fine if you are not a big music fan, but if you have a huge collection of tunes you will want to look for at 1 GB. As always using itunes is a pleasure, and the size of the shuffle makes it ideal for sport (although you may want to buy an arm band to hold it in), added to that it barely weighs anything. The ear phones are ok, but to get the best sound you may want to invest in some in-ear earphones as the base on the standard ipod earphones is lacking. It is well built and has withstood being dropped on multiple occasions.
            The main problem I have had is having to reset my shuffle quite often as it has crashed when changing songs. However reseting is easy doesn't take long, so its more of an annoyance than anything.
            You cannot see which song is playing as there is no display on this shuffle so you have to remember which order your songs are in if you wish to find one!
            3/5
              Love using my iPod Shuffle works after 3 years
              Apple iPod Shuffle 512MB (Shuffle)
              I got my first Apple product a shuffle around three years ago for around £30 and now I have two Apple computers, A Apple TV media centre, several iPods and an iPhone! So I really like Apple products. When I bought my first shuffle it was to do me for when I was running, cycling, jogging and walking! It was a very good product but the only disadvantage to it was that there's no screen, so I bought an iPod nano but still used my shuffle sometimes. And still I use my first shuffle sometimes!
              What's in the Apple iPod Shuffle 512MB Box...
              The shuffle's box is green and on the front of the box there is the iPod shuffle in the middle and green around it! On the back there is information on the Apple iPod Shuffle 512MB. Inside of the box there are Manuals, Apple iPod Shuffle 512MB, Necklace that fits around your neck and into the bottom of the iPod shuffle where the USB cover is, Software for Mac and PC and iPod earphones! The iPod shuffle is white and looks like a Apple remote or a Memory stick! On the top of the iPod there is a headphone jack. On the front of the iPod shuffle there is a Play/Pause button and around it there is Volume up and down and Skip forward and backward buttons . On the bottom of the iPod Shuffle there is a USB and a cover, The USB is to connect the iPod to your Desktop or Laptop. On the back of the iPod from top to bottom there is a Slider button that slides between Off, Play continuous or Shuffle and underneath that there is a button that shows you how much battery life you have! Underneath there is two logos the Apple logo and an iPod logo. Underneath there is two sentences Design by Apple in California and Made in China! And beside that there is the Serial Number to your iPod Shuffle!
              Overall
              Overall I love using my old iPod, after three years of service it is still working! You must use iTunes to sync songs onto the iPod. On the bottom of the iPod there is a USB that goes into the USB port on any computer or laptop! It charges your iPod and it lets you put songs on it. You can also put your iPod into the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3 and copy and listen songs on the console! I use my iPod shuffle really the most between all my iPods because I put my shuffle into my Xbox 360 and do listen to songs etc. It could also be used as a memory stick too! It is a very good iPod I would recommend anyone who wants a cheap iPod to buy this or to buy the new iPod shuffle which is on http://www.apple.com/uk/ it is very small the iPod shuffle especially the new shuffle, which is extremely small and you control the Music by buttons underneath the right earphone! I really enjoy listening to my Apple iPod Shuffle 512MB
                Ok for a small time buy but if you're looking for something to do you for a long time look elsewhere
                The shuffle...not much to say, it doesn't have a screen or a song selection but by the size comparison to other models, you can tell why. Although this is extremely small and particularly lightweight , i myself am not impressed by the shape. When you think of ipods, you think of sleek, slim looks with nice finishes, but with the ipod shuffle its more like holding a small brick with headphones out of the end! Its plain white finish is quite boring, and the fact that someone would buy an mp3 player where you can not pick which song to listen to bamboozles me totally! There is not much to the shuffle, you upload songs using itunes and away you go... thumbs up for difficulty! One problem for this shuffle is the memory, 512 MB is really not much for an mp3 player, that is only a little over 100 songs. Unless you don't really want much music on there (which then i don't know why you would be considering buying an mp3 player) then this should really put you off...these are not available to buy new anymore, apple have released newer models, which i believe are much improved, but if you still wish to purchase one of these it is probably best to browse in second hand shops. I would not recommend purchasing one of the shuffles if you are looking for a mp3 player that you will be using for a long amount of time, but if you are short on money and just want something to mess around with, these are for you!
                  Fantastic little music player!
                  Before I got my Ipod shuffle, I'd gone through so many mp3 players, trying to find one I liked. My ipod was free with a student bank account a few years ago, and, although I've been bought other mp3/4 players since, I always go back to it!
                  It's small, reliable, and so easy to use; and really durable.... Ive flooded it twice, and dropped it loads, but it still works! With 512mb memory, it holds approx 120 songs.... not as much as some, but at least you dont need to work your way through thousands to get to your favourite tune! The shuffle option is different, and can be interesting, but not if you want to listen to an album, for example. Sound quality is good, although headphnes provided didnt last long.
                  The Ipod is rechargeable, and has a usb port to connect to a computer for charging and changing music, etc. With an hours charging time, the Ipod is approx 80% charged, and lasts for ages! With the Ipod you receive Itunes software for PC, which is easy to use and also an alternative to Windows Media Player. You can also buy music through Itunes, and share music over a network. The Ipod can also be used as a storage device for other files, such as word documents or pictures.
                  There is now a newer version of the Ipod shuffle, which comes in a variety of funky colours and with more memory. Therefore, the first generation Shuffles can be bought from as little as £10, whilst the newer 2nd generation cost between £20-40 depending on the memory size.
                  Whether old or new, the Ipod shuffle is an ideal, affordable device, and many people would be lost without it!
                    The Ipod Shuffle - Shuffles all your songs
                    When the Ipod Shuffle came out it was quite exciting and very novel, however over the past few years I feel it has been 'Shuffle'd by Apple and the consumer, to the back of the pack (of Ipods)
                    I personally really like a lot of the products that Apple have produced in the last few years, but sadly this is just not one of them. It's nice a small and it's relatively cheap for an Ipod, but it has very little memory and like the name suggests it simply shuffles all of the songs that you'll uploaded onto it. For some I imagine that this feature is not a problem at all, but for me I really like to know what I'm listening to and when although 'shuffle' is sometimes acceptable, usually I'm in the mood for a certain type of music.
                    This ipod shuffle is also the older version and has been replaced by a more attractive, small and newer model. The original Ipod shuffle is not a bad machine, it's just not the kind of device or MP3 player that I would buy were I given the choice.
                      Overall a Good Mp3 player
                      The ipod shuffle is just a step down from the ipod nano and the old ipods. It might not have a screen but more than makes up for it with size and the look of it. It is smaller and lighter and therefore better for people who like to listen to music whilst doing various activities such as going for a jog. It does not have a great memory which is a great defect for any mp3 player but it is just pleasing to look at. The ipod allows easy access to controls such as the volume or fast forward buttons. As I have said before in other reviews the only thing that really lets down this ipod and all the other is itunes. Which does not allow you to move your music around and has an amazingly long load time compared to other much better media players out there. This iPod offers a cheaper alternative for any one wanting to own an iPod. Although there is a newer version of the iPod shuffle it is more expensive.
                      The Ipod shuffle was brought for me as a Christmas present a few years ago and i was not dissappointed with with it. Being new to the world of new technology i did not want to branch out on a top of the range ipod till i knew what i was dealing with and if i was able to download the music wth out any problem.
                      Apple have made the technology of downloading music with the help of itunes a piece of cake, i do not know what i was worrying about it was so simple.
                      The ipod shuffle is also an easy MP3 player to use this style comes in a 512mb or a 1gb. The 512mb holds up to 120 songs it weighs 22 grams you can enjoy up to 12 hours of continous play, it is charged bu either a usb port on your computer or you can but a charger so you do not need to be near a computer to get the best out of your ipod.
                      There are various accessories that you can buy for you ipod, but to name a few there are speakers, covers and connectors to link you ipod to you main stereo.
                      They have now released a new ipod shuffle which is a lot more compact than the one im reviewing now and it comes in a selection of colours.
                      The only disadvantage that i have for this ipod is that you cannot see which song you are playing or be able to select a playlist as this in a limited ipod, but what do you expect for the price tag. This ipod only allows you to shuffle the sonngs or to play then in the order that they appear on your itunes.
                      But for you first ipod i would definately recommed this ipod, i will however be updating to a bigger ipod as i have used this a lot more than i expected to.
                      Brilliant MP3 Player
                      This is a very good mp3 player. Easy to add songs and easy to work with even if you are a technology newbie. When i first bought this product it was so easy to just pick up and use. If you want a reliable cheap mp3 player i would buy this it is availible in a 1GB version. If you want more memory i would buy this. * * * * *
                      Great MP3 Player.
