Last Christmas we ventured into the world of Playmobil for the first time. We picked a theme for each of my children and got everyone to buy sets related to this theme. Our youngest son was having a pirate themed christmas. One of the smaller sets Grandma bought was this pirate cove. The box to this one is quite a decent size. Thankfully the set itself is a little smaller and mostly assembled when it arrived. This set has a price tag of around £20-30 usually. For some reason someone is chancing their luck selling it for nearly £60 currently. I can safely say that this is not worth the inflated price. The main part of this set looks a bit like part of a port. There is a section that has what looks like a tower. This has the lovely crenellated edging you normally see at the top of a castle. here you can get one of the two included pirate figures to look over the edge to keep watch below. There is a little trapdoor here so you can hide things in here like the little weapons that came with this set, or the chest of golden coins. The other half of teh cove features steps down to what you can only imagine as water thanks to the rocks that look perilous round the side. As well as the two figures, you also get a cannon, a little rowing boat with oars, and a few little sea creatures. I would say there is enough in this one set alone to have a great little role play game for children. As well as my own children owning this set, my nephew also has this one. My children will choose to play with this when visiting my nephew even though they have it themselves, which tells me they think it is pretty good. It has also been consistently used throughout the year since they got it. My youngest son was almost 4 and a half when he got this. I would say that this is a good age for the set due to the numerous small parts. He was still a bit clumsy with some pieces when we first got this. A child needs quite good fine motor control to use the smaller pieces in the set. Playmobil say that the age range on this one is 4-10 years old. I think a 10 year old could still play with this, but it would have less longevity than buying it for a younger child. However, being slightly older than 4 could be better too as my son has lost a number of the smaller pieces even though they are meant to be put away after play. He also has a bit of an obsession with doing things like taking the hair off the playmobil figures, which can lead to the people getting a bit deformed in shaped and the hair not going back on. It's a lot of pieces to keep together is all I am saying, and if you are the sort of parent who will get a bit irked by this, it is maybe not best for your sanity to buy this sort of set. Overall, I think this has been a fantastic set. If this were the only pirate set we had bought my children, they would have still had lots of fun just from what was in this box. We have added other things to it, and the role play I have witnessed has been fantastic. Just the cove itself can be a great game with other figures. My kids like using the soldiers from a toy story bucket with this. I have no hesitation in recommending this particular set or playmobil in general for that matter. It is well made, and stimulating to my children's minds.
