Last Christmas I began my son's playmobil collection because I thought that he would love to play with all of the figures and things whilst also being mindful that as he is six now I would potentially be able to sell them on in a few years time as well. Throughout the year my son has picked up various other bits of playmobil with his spending money from his Great Grandma or with birthday money and such like and one of the sets which he bought himself was the jewel thieves set.
As with all other playmobil sets the item comes packaged in a thin blue cardboard box which features a picture of the items included on the front as well telling you the age of children that the product is suitable for, in this case children aged four years plus. Inside this set you get two robbers who are dressed in dark colours and have hats and face masks on as well as a picture which stands on an easel, an alarmed case with a golden coloured crown inside as well as various bits and pieces such as a rod for them to try and fish the crown out and a loot bag and such like.
My son was very keen to play with this set as soon as he got home and so he set it all up along side his police station with the intention of the police men coming to arrest the robbers. Inside the bottom of the case there was a tab which once pulled would allow the alarm to be triggered when the case was moved, just like it would in real life. My son was so excited to use this feature but sadly the case worked once and then never worked again which was very disappointed. I did actually contact playmobil directly about this issue because we had bought it on a shopping trip out of town with friends and as I don't drive it was going to be difficult to return the item. Playmobil never got back to me about the issue though and to be honest I have felt quite let down by this and it puts me off buying more really so this year my son isn't getting any playmobil other than the advent calendar which he nagged me in to!
Despite the fact that the alarm did not work my son has still been able to play with this kit and so it is not the end of the world that it didn't work but it was still a let down. My son likes to set this up and use it along side his other sets to create a bigger playing environment which I think is the idea of products such as this anyway. I would say that young children would be best not playing with this kit as there are some small parts which I think could be a choking hazard if the child was not supervised properly.
The set costs around nine pounds online and this isn't a bad price to pay for the items which you get in the set but obviously we were left disappointed by the fact the alarm on the case only worked once and whilst this hasn't stopped my son playing with the kit he will sometimes say "I wish this worked Mummy" and so it is obviously on his mind.
Thank you for reading my review!
The Playmobil Jewel Thieves set is a great little set for the novelty factor alone. It retails at just under £10, and on the run up to Christmas, a few stores had it available for half price which made it a bargain buy. We bought this to go with the Playmobil Police Car that the grandson got for Christmas.
Inside the set, you get your two jewel thieves for starters of course. Both are dressed in classic storybook thief attire, complete with little 'mugger hats' and dark clothing! There's also a couple of items which you can use to set up a miniature museum of sorts, or you could just add the items to a room in an existing Playmobil house perhaps.
The main attraction here is the case that the crown sits in. There's a little plastic stand with a clear plastic lid, and when you try to steal the crown out of the casing (through a hole at the top), it sets off a burglar alarm! It's quite annoying and realistic actually, though fortunately it isn't too loud.
To get the crown out of the alarmed case, there is a small selection of tools, including a little hammer (in case your burglars want to just smash it and run of course) and a hook on a fishing line, so your thieves can carefully try to remove the crown without setting off the alarm. It's actually quite a good little concentration exercise for little ones when you think about it.
This is a novel little set that includes all the essentials you need in an add-on for an existing police set. You could combine this with any of the police sets, even just an individual policeman figure, and you'll have lots of play possibilities. The items included in this set are excellent quality, as you'd expect from Playmobil, and the price is very reasonable. I think this is an original idea that's been well designed and sold for a fair price.
