A really nice option for an advent calendar

After reading a review on a Lego advent calendar before Christmas I had pretty much decided to buy one for my son. Amazon is often my first point of call for things these days and whilst on there I noticed playmobil advent calendars too and so I decided to give my son a choice of which he would like. He chose the playmobil post office set.

The package arrived quite quickly and as it was around a week or so before the 1st of December I put it on top of the display unit we have in the dining kitchen. The main reason I did this was because there was an instruction book in the slip case and on this it showed which items of playmobil you would receive each day! Whilst I realise it is a good idea to document what you get in the kit I felt it was a bit silly to say when you get them as this ruins the element of surprise for the child should they get hold of the instruction book!

The actual advent calendar is a thick cardboard box which is obviously much wider than normal advent calendars so that it can fit the playmobil pieces in. The front features a picture using items you will receive in the calendar which is a nice idea I think. Much like other advent calendars there is a tab at the top of the calendar which has a hole in for you to pin the calendar up. I actually used three pins here as well as big blobs of blutak in all corners to ensure it stayed up on the wall and this worked well.

The doors on the calendar are all obviously numbered and are not uniform in size to accommodate the varying pieces of playmobil behind them. My son found that the doors were a tad tricky to open and so I would run my finger nail along the perforation for him and then he was fine to do the rest independently. We didn't see this as an issue at all and simply put it down to the fact that thick cardboard is used to make the advent calendar so sturdy.

My son was so excited to open this advent calendar and so on the last day of November we built the cardboard scenery to which the playmobil would be added. Despite being made from a thin card this held together really well though I would advise an adult does this part as it involves some folding and pushing tabs through holes which may rip if you were too heavy handed. Each morning as my son opened the advent calendar he would be excited to pull out the little plastic bag with playmobil in so he could develop this post office scene. Items included in the set were Father Christmas, a table and chair, post box and letters, a functional Father Christmas stamp, angel, elf, reindeer, sleigh, tree, naughty list as well as many other items too!

My son had such fun each day adding to the set and seeing what he would receive that day. The more pieces he added to it the more he played with it. I personally liked having the festive scene set up in the front room during the run up to Christmas and it was a talking point for friends and family too as well as being a functional toy to play with.

Once Christmas and the New Year was over we packed up the scene in to a box but I fully expect my son to want to play with it again and most definitely next Christmas. The advent calendar cost us around £15.00 which granted isn't cheap for an advent calendar but I do feel it was well worth that money and I expect I will look to buy another one of the playmobil or Lego advent calendars next Christmas. I should think that deals will occur over the year and so it would be wise to keep a look out for them should you be interested.

Thank you for reading my review!

        would buy again

I have never seen an advent calender like this before, so I was unsure what to expect. It was actually a free gift from Toys R Us, because we spent over £50 on Playmobil. I think retail price was around £15, which I still think is reasonable, given the amount you get. It is packaged nicely, and the calender itself is made of sturdy cardboard, with a piece you can pull out to hang it from.

It comes with a 3D snow/house scene made of cardboard, which you slot together easily. This was an nice idea, because it gave my son somewhere to put the pieces each day.

The first door had a post box behind it. I was quite impressed with the quality of the items. The post box is really sturdy and slides open for easy removal of the letters. The second door contained letters to go in the post box. I found that it continued in the same way, with a larger item every few days, followed by several smaller ones.

The back of the main box it comes in does show you the order you receive the pieces in, however we found it was more fun to guess what it was going to be each day.
Some of the main bits you receive are: Post box and letters, desk and chair, Santa, Reindeer, Sleigh, Elf, Angel and Christmas tree. There are also many little bits to play with, such as a tiny working stamp and ink pad.

I will definitely be purchasing a Playmobil advent calender for next Christmas.

          one of the better sets

It's become somewhat of a tradition in our house to have a Playmobil advent calendar, and this year was no exception. This set, which is called the Christmas Post Office has been one of our favourites and was well worth the £16 I paid for it back in the Summer - you can pick one up right now for less than that if you like to prepare well in advance for next year.

Unlike other calendars from playmobil we have had in the past this one required no assembly at all, other than taking out the cardboard 3D display of Santa's post office onto which all the pieces were placed as we opened the windows in the main part of the calendar, which is A4 sized and quite thick as it contains little boxes with the playmobil in, from 1 to 24. The little windows were easily perforated and opened by my rather excited children and from start to finish this calendar really did not disappoint. The first window revealed a post box with a removable back, soon to be followed by actual little letters to post, right up to a sleigh, reindeer and a Christmas Tree near the Big Day itself. There were also plenty of toys, 3 figures (Santa himself, an elf and an angel) and lots of nice little details; in particular the children loved the mini working stamp which actually prints playmobil Santas onto the little notebook which is included.

I found the set was a source of delight to the children every single morning, and even the display section was excellent, featuring as it did Santa's mail room complete with a desk and chairs and a separate stable area for the lone reindeer. There was a minimal amount of assembly with the items, the tree and sledge had to be put together and Father Christmas had to have his hat put on, but the end result was a very Christmassy and playable with scene that has been much loved. Because the set comes with a small booklet telling you which item is for which days in theory you could put this together again and use it again, but I know from experience we are unlikely to do this, and the pieces are more likely to be added to our collection and played with throughout the year as everything is of normal playmobil size and of extremely good quality, as I have come to expect from Playmobil. Some of the smaller pieces, such as a teddy bear, the letters and the reindeer's carrot may be a little small for younger children but could be used with supervision.

At this price I paid this toy was really excellent and I really think the Playmobil calendars are both fantastic value and great fun. I really like this set which is one of the better calendars in my opinion and I think I enjoyed it as much as the children! Thoroughly and unreservedly recommended!
