I have 2 beautiful Ragdoll cats called Bella and Dolly! I bought them 18 months ago and they bring my family a lot of joy. My wife and my son dote on them and they are very playful and affectionate. They are house cats and so they don't go outside and they sleep upstairs at the bottom of our bed.
I wanted to get them insured because I knew tgst if they were to become unwell then it may well cost thousands of pounds in order to get them the treatments that they require. I know that I would end up paying the money even if it run into thousands as they are so precious to our family.
I was recommended PetPlan by our vet who actively advertised and promoted their services. I took out a pet plan policy and it cost about £10 per cat per month. This was a lot if money but I was willing to pay it for the peace of mind that it gave me that my cats were covered.
You should always check what the limit per confition is. They advertise there overall cover amount but this isn't that important its the amount PER confition that will catch you out. If your car gets a chronic condition like eczema that's needs tegukar treatment then it will only be treated up to a certain amount say £1000, then when that's exhausted you will have to pay. But thus condition could go on for 15-20 years. If you try to switch companies you will have to declare this condition as PRE-EXISTING and they won't insure you for it so be careful.
How can a pet insurance company not cover euthanasia? And why do they not tell you when you buy the policy?
I would not recommend Pet Plan to my worse enemy, they would rather your dog suffered and make you watch this, so that you can afford to pay the vet bills!
If you are a pet lover, this is not the company for you!
As a breeder of Maine Coons having good insurance in place is absolutely essential as vets bills can soon mount up. Luckily we have had little cause to use it, touch wood! However three years ago we had a young cat diagnosed with IMHA (a type of anaemia) where her white blood cells attacked and destroyed the red. Sadly despite extensive and intensive treatment she passed away a few days later. However over the period of treatment she had oxygen therapy, blood tests, blood transfusion, scans and in-hospital treatment. All in all the vets bills for five days were over £2000!!! Because we were with Petplan and the vet could make a direct claim all we had to do was fill in our details and policy number and pay the excess and they took care of the rest. A real relief when you are struggling to cope with what's happening and especially as she passed away we knew we didn't have additional worry over dealing with bills. Petplan text me within 7 days to say the claim had been paid. They even sent a card to us when they knew the cat had died.
The benefits of Petplan are that most vets can do a direct claim so you don't have to pay upfront and then try and get the money back. They also have a good range of policies to suit people. They offer ongoing treatment for ongoing conditions. They are quick to settle claims. They also don't massively increase premiums if you make a claim!
The draw back is the cost, they are a bit more expensive than some other insurers but I know they will pay out for my cats whereas I am not convinced of others.
We give out 4 week free insurance policies with our kittens from Petplan and I always recommend owners get insurance. Yes its expensive if you never have to claim, but vets bills can quickly run into thousands of pounds. Insurance is always a waste of money until you have to claim and then its amazing!
My cat was from a rescue centre and came with 4 weeks free Petplan. she was ill with gastro enteritis as soon as we got her and nearly died clocking up a £486 bill for hospitalisation, IV fluids etc.She was then hit by a car a year later and now at 9 years old Petplan have paid out over £9000 in claims, always without question or doubt. I have had 3 other pets all with Petplan and each claim has gone through quickly and been paid promptly. I would strongly recommend them to anyone with a cat. My policy has never gone up by much and my excess has this year just increased from £70 to £100 due to cats age.
Do not use this insurance. They would not pay out for our basset hound who has lymphoma. They have made every excuse in their policy to get out of paying for her treatment. There all good at taking your money but as soon as a problem occurs they don't want to know.
Petplan is worthless. Don't just lose money.When my healthy dog got sick they rejected a claim and didn't pay with incomprehensible reason. I just lost my money.

I have insured my labrador since he was 8 weeks old. He is now 10. My premium has steadily crept up every year and now shot up to £470/year + £115 excess + 20% of the vets fees on top.I have claimed in the past a couple of times and they have been very good, promptly paying out though.BUT the increase of £70 in the premium this year and the fact we are NOT totally covered for the vets bills is a bit much to stomach. I feel very disappointed by a company I feel is just a rip off now.
I spent a lot of time researching companies and plans prior to choosing petplan. I carefully selected the policy that was right for us. We have not filed a claim ever. Our first year's policy is about to expire, and I got a renewal letter saying they are changing our policy and increasing the fees by $50/year. This is a 27% increase, and we have never made a claim!! What a bad company!!
I have been with this insurance plan in the past.
I paid mine anually and I think it was about £120 or so at the time, and that was about 3 years or so ago.
When I phoned to make my payment the operator went through all the usual terms and it all sounded good to me, as I though if my pet was ill it was a good cover to have, at the time I had a dog and he was worth the insurance to cover his needs if he was ill.
How wrong I was, when my dog became ill about almost a year into this insurance I thought I would be alright as my insurance was in place.
But my dog became ill, he had a very bad cough for around 6 weeks, I took him to the vet straight away, and the vet gave him some tablets to take, of which I knew my insurance did not cover but after the second amount of tablets, my vet advised me to bring my dog in for an ex-ray to investigate further as to why he was coughing too much, so I called the insurance to place my claim on this x - ray as I was supposed to be covered but they told me I was not as it was supposed to be in the small print, ex -rays did not come under in the agreement.
I read over and over it and could not find this statement there at all, so I thought they must be right and I had missed something.
While my vet did the x-ray he discovered my dog had a tumour and had to call me to tell me the results straightaway before he could do anything else, he told me he needed to do an operation and so I gave him permission.
The cost of this operation was £840 and I still thought I would be at least covered for this amount but like before I contacted the insurance and only to be told I was not covered for this amount in full.
I was very disappointed in this insurance because not only did they not cover me for what it said in the policy, I had to keep making calls to them at my cost just to sort the problem out.
In the end they said they would cover me for half the amount of the vet bill, only the operation part, not the x-ray and they said they would do this out of a kind of sympathy grounds, I had never been so angry with them as I was at this moment, as how could they give me my claim under those grounds when I was already covered.
At the time I wished I had persued it further but at the time my dog was seriously ill and after he came home, he only survived 3 days and I had to take him back to the vet and he said he was suffering more because his tumour was pressing against his heart and so would be kinder to put him to sleep so we allowed him to do this.So since I was grieving over my dog I could not deal with the hassle of the insurance claim and so just received half the amount I was entitled to.
I would not recommend this plan, I would just put the same amount of money in the bank to use incase your pet is ill in the future and just put the other amount from your own money to cover your pet.
I since have not got another dog, so far, but may in the future but I do have other pets but without the insurance plan.
Pet Plan - I took out insurance on my dog over 1 year ago - now that I have put in a claim they have put exclusions onto the policy backdated to the beginning because of characteristics of his breed and excluding all dental work. In trying to resolve this for the last 3 months - I have been continually insulted, talked down to, racial comments were made to me, it is currently in the hands of the complaints department as I know that I have been mis-sold this policy as when trying to reinsure the same type of dog once again no exclusions were going to be immediately actioned. Vets won't fight for you because although 9 out of 10 recommend Pet Plan this is because they get a backhander from the organisation to do so Even the lady I spoke to today at PetPlan has not even got insurance for her dog she explained that having purchased a pet once should have the responsibility to pay all vet bills oneself - somewhat strange as PetPlan say that you are responsible by taking out insurance!!!!! Obviously she knows the reasons not to insure your pet! - especially with the organisation she works for!!!
Probably the best plan around? I have kept dogs for years and yes the first time I took insurance I got stung with my dog having a life long condition that was only covered for 12 months! The vet then advised me to take out cover with pet plan and it has been the best thing I ever did. The cover lasted for the life of my dogs - everything from a thorn in the foot, to a suspected poisoning and then, horror of horrors, a terrible few months with my beautiful rescue dog from Greece. He had almost everything imaginable caught from a sand fly bite: Pet Plan covered all the tests, the vet hospital isolation ward, the injections and myriad of tablets prescribed to slow down the disintegration of his internal organs. It was a very sad and stressful time as my boy lost more than half his body weight until such time we decided enough was enough. By this time Pet Plan were paying around £500 a week to keep him alive. We had him put to sleep on the Wednesday and took a couple of days off only to get a phone call from Pet Plan telling us the cost of the euthanasia was not covered on the insurance plan! Arhh!!! Insensitive timing.
27th October 2004. Ashford horse sales. Why I went that day I will never know! but... I had no money on me, I had no transport and I certainly had no plans to buy a horse.
Walking amongst the stalls I ooh'd and ahh'd at a few of the ponies but nothing managed to pique my interest. Until I got to the last few stalls. There I saw two ponies that quite literally were skin and bone. Had the RSPCA been in attendance that day they would never have been allowed to enter the sale. One of the ponies, an iron grey welsh mountain pony, advertised as being 6 months old was quite clearly ill. I fell in love.
To cut a long story short, after a lot of hair pulling, thinking what the heck have i done and arranging transport and a place for him to live, he came home with me. Slowly and surely he was nursed back to health and became my best friend and companion.
Having worked for a vets in my younger years and also seen friends facing no choice but to destroy their beloved pet as a result of not being able to afford treatment, I was not going to make the same mistake and was adamant that my pony would be insured.
I also recalled that when we were asked about insurances by clients at the vets, there were some leaflets that we would readily hand out and others that we would leave sat on the shelf. As a result of this I contacted Petplan for a quote.

Petplan insurance are a trademark of and underwritten by Cornhill insurance.
They cover insurance for domestic pets (dogs, cats, rabbits) and horses.
They also offer cover for reptiles, birds and small mammals under their exotic cover, but these I found costly compared to other companies for this specialist level of cover.
Their website is very clear, concise and easy to follow. This incorporates an excellent online quoting system for all of the above type of cover and clear contact details from the outset should you require to contact them.
The cover for my pony, who by now had been named Samson was not the cheapest available, I will admit that. However the company offered middle ground cost with the highest levels of cover. This was on a comparisson with NFU insurance, SEIB and Equine and Life (E&L) insurance companies.
When I purchased Sam I was informed that he was 6 months old, however he still had his foal tips on his hooves and looked very baby. The vet visited on the day i got him home and told me that he was barely 4 months old. As a result of this he missed out on vital nutrition from his dam, despite being on milk replacement powder for 4 months. He developed a musculo-skeletal condition in his patellas known as "patella luxation" very similar in humans to locking kneecaps. Except it caused him a great deal of distress as his leg was effectively locking out backwards and terrifying the life out of the poor lad. The vet was called with the knowledge in my mind that this was going to hurt someones wallet and prayed that it wouldn't be mine!!
Ultra sounds confirmed the presence of the condition (even though it could clearly be seen from the outside!!)
x-rays confirmed an operation would be needed (see above)
Blood tests and chest x-rays (???!) confirmed he could go under anaesthetic
and so the costs mounted up...
Petplan were very quick to send me out a claim form and I was reassured over the phone that a claim of that nature would be paid. A massive relief off my mind i can tell you!!! Initially I was informed that I would have to pay the vets myself (eep!) and the cheque would then be sent to reimburse me.
However I explained to petplan that the bill was in excess of £4000 and that I would not be able to pay this and as such they agreed to pay the vet directly. An excellent example of their excellent customer service.
approximately 8 days after the claim had been submitted I received a call from the vets stating that they had received the money and asking me to pay the excess, which in my case was £150.
I was amazed at how slick the transaction was and how there was absolutely no quibble over the condition or payment at all.
My one complaint, actually i wouldn't call it complaint, more an area of disgruntlement was that as the vets had informed them that the case had been concluded and samson was on the road to recovery, petplan would not pay any further claims on this condition for the preceeding 12 months. therefore if his other back leg went the same way the cost would be borne by me. Gulp. Therefore i spent the following 12 months with my breath held!!!
To summarise I was exceptionally impressed with petplan and they way that they handled my claim.
I know a number of other owners of animals also insured with the same company and the very very few have had problems. I would say on a ratio of about 1 in 9, the 1 being bad experiences to 9 good experiences. Therefore you would be very unlucky to have a bad experience with them.
I was unperturbed about the cost and remain so. I would much rather pay slightly more for enhanced levels of cover and a good service with a quick payout than pay a cheaper amount, only for it to eventually cost me more in time and finances. I would advise any one to pick an insurance company with middle of the road cost and not just look at how cheap the policy is. Believe me you will be thankful that you did in the end
Petplan did me proud in my hour of need. Samson was fine and is now living as the much loved pet of a 10 year old girl. His leg was such that without this cover I may have not had the option to rescue him for the second time in his life.
I would urge any one with a pet to insure them, whether your primary concern be for your wallet or for your pet.
I have marked petplan down one star for their exclusion policy but the fully deseved 4 stars remain.
In the past I have had some hefty bills from the vets after animals have been in fights or had accidents. Only on one occasion did we opt for putting the animal down and that was because he had been hit by a car and the injuries were too much to fix. Even then we were faced with a large bill to pay.
I love my animals and I couldn't imagine living without them so when we visited our cats at the shelter before they came home with us I looked into pet insurance. Most insurers were saying about £5-£10 a month and all kind of cover but the down side was that once they got to 8 years and over their cover would end. What was I supposed to do at that point?
I saw an advert on television for Petplan which said animals were covered for life. I was really happy and went straight onto their website. It did indeed state that animals were covered for life and so that was the biggest problem sorted. After putting all my details in it worked out at a monthly cost of £26 for both of the cats so only a few more pounds a month then the other places which to be honest isn't so bad and gives us cover in their older age.
Typically after two months of cover one of our cats was walking with a limp. She hadn't been outside and she hadn't been fighting with the other one. We thought at most maybe she'd got some litter or something stuck in her paw. On inspection we couldn't see anything so we took her to the vet. The vet looked her over and after taking x-rays found that her hip bone was fractured! How the world she managed that one we haven't a clue. She had a few more x-rays, surgery, drugs and over-night stays which ended up at a cost of just under £3000 in total. (She's fine now and fully healed)
Normally with Petplan you pay the fee and then claim everything except the £80 excess back. This was a huge sum of money and one I just didn't have. Medivet were very understanding and called Petplan. Together they worked it out so that I only had to pay £80 to the vet and they would pay Medivet the rest direct. It was a huge relief that they worked that out for me. My only other option was doing a payment plan and then once that was done claiming which could have taken over a year.

There are a number of different covers for many different animals but for cats there is budget and supercat. They are both really good and give you a lot. The only reason I chose supercat is because it covers quarantine fees which is something we were possibly looking at needing in the future. We're not planning on moving anymore but I'm happy leaving the cover as it is.
