Colin Mcrae Dirt is a racing game for the computer. It is made by Codemasters and is one of a big series of a rally racing games which feature a late rally driver Colin McRae. This latest version of the popular series deviates from the realistic rally simulation genre to a slightly more arcade like racing game. I bought this game for £4.99 from Morrison's. When I bought it, the game had been out for a while therefore it was cheap and part of a PCGAMER (magazine) branded series. The PCGAMER branded series is games which received 80% plus scores in PCGAMER and therefore you know that they are going to be good. This particular game scored 85% in issue 177 of PCGAMER When you first load up the game you are greeted with a very stylish and modern looking interface. I did not find it very hard to find the modes I wanted, the settings I wanted or any other features in the game. However one thing I do not like about the menu system in this game is that you cannot navigate it with a joy pad this might not sound too bad as it is a computer game but if you are like me and enjoy playing racing games with joy pad it is a pain. The actual racing in the game comes in many flavours which is what makes this game is different from the others in the Colin McRae series. You can choose from a number of different events ranging from four-wheel drives to the more traditional rally racing. The physics are good although the game is not so hard that it becomes a chore to play. I find it thoroughly enjoyable although I would recommend that you only attempt to play the game with the steering wheel similar accessory. The game also features multiplayer however this is a major letdown as the modes of basic and their method of matchmaking is very poor. Colin McRae dirt graphics and sound quality is excellent in my opinion especially as this game is fairly old. If you go into first person view and have the graphics on high it looks very realistic and many people who have seen me play have mistaken it for a real live rally event. Although the graphics are excellent the game does not need a particularly fast computer to play I do have a fairly high specification computer although my friend happily plays it on his relatively low-end computer, and he has no complaints. In conclusion, Colin Mcrae Dirt is a must have especially now it is so cheap and in the PCGAMER line. I find it thoroughly enjoyable and so have all of my friends.
Fans of Codemasters'' Colin McRae rally racing series are in for a surprise with the publisher''s newest title, DiRT. DiRT has more in common with Digital Illusions'' Rallisport Challenge series than the Colin McRae games of old, putting a greater emphasis on a variety of off-road racing disciplines, as opposed to sticking hard and fast to traditional rally racing. That''s not to say that rally fans will be disappointed with the game. DiRT veers a good bit further into arcade territory than earlier games in the series, but it is still a blast to drive, and absolutely stunning to look at.
