“ Brand: New World / Energy Source: Gas „
I bought this oven recently after moving into a new house without any furniture. I chose it due to it being reasonably priced and one of the few that would fit into an existing space in the worktop of my kitchen.
The New world oven has 2 main compartments. The lower oven is a conventional 62litre oven which is large enough to cook a decent roast (I've cooked for 6 people. more than 6 and it might be a bit small)
The upper compartment can be used conventionally or as a gas grill. Both compartments are lined with enamel making them easy to clean.
On top of the oven are 4 gas burners and a fold down top to cover the burners. I like the fact that when the lid is folded down, the gas automatically shuts off. Being good at leaving things on, making a habit of putting the lid down ensures I don't let my house fill up with gas!
The cooker measure 50cm wide, 90cm high and 60cm deep (the exact dimensions of the work surface hole in my kitchen). It requires a gas connection and an electrical plug (for the ignition and light).
According to the manufactures it weights 42.9kg (Based on experience this is fairly easy to move about).
The oven is simple to use and doesn't have any fancy functions (which in my case would rarely be utilised anyway). The heat in the oven seems constant and well distributed which helps with control of cooking.
The hob is easy to use and it is simple to vary the heat using the control knobs.
The oven is ergonomic and unlike some ovens it is easy to get things in and out. An interior light combined with glass doors make it easy to check on things being cooked without opening the oven and letting the heat out.
The build of the New world cooker is good but not amazing which can be expected for the price. The hob is solid and the enamel inside the oven is easy to clean. My only real issue is that the doors to the grill and oven compartment feel a bit flimsy.
The control knobs for varying the gas to the hob, oven and grill have a satisfying turn and are easy to control down to a low heat.
----Buying from Currys---
When I bought this It was advertised as exclusive to currys. It now seems it is available from other retailers including sainsburys (at a better price). After ordering I had to wait a week for currys to deliver. I paid extra for the installation as I'm not 100 percent confident playing with gas connections (whereas I would never dream of paying for installation of a wahing machine!). The installation engineer (currys term not mine - a point that makes me angry as I studied for 5 years to be an engineer) was excellent and carried out all the gas checks and certified it safely installed. Apart from waiting for deliver and the 'hard sell' of insurance (which I didn't take) in the shop the service was acceptable overall and in particular the installation technition was excellent.
My only issue with the New World cooker is that the glass door is quite hard to clean. It can be removed as it has a double layer of glass, but this is quite a hassle and not the easiest thing to do.
I paid £350 pounds for the cooker from currys plus installation. It's now available from Sainsburys for £335. I think this price is very reasonable and for a fairly simpe no frills cooker it is good value.
