My horses are a part of the family and just like us humans they do get Christmas present albeit no where near as much! I generally just get a few bags of treats and replacement likits for the boredom breakers which hang in their stables. This year I decided to treat them all to something new and exciting especially as they spend quite a lot of time in their stables during the cold winter months.
My present of choice is the Tongue Twister by Likit. Likit specialise in equine treats and toys. Most of their toys are aimed for horses who spend a lot of time in confined spaces and they are designed to stop a horse being so bored. My lot seem to enjoy the Likit toys so for me it was a natural choice choosing the Tongue Twister.
The Tongue Twister is made of a durable, hardwearing plastic which is designed for the horse to have to work for the treat. Therefore the horse spends more time getting the treat and isn't bored! The Tongue Twister is screwed to the wall of the stable (four holes to ensure it is fitted securely) and can be accessed by the horse all day everyday should they want to.
For me I had to get a handyman to screw the toy to the wall as my stables are made out of a breeze block type material and my other half isn't that DIY friendly. The Tongue Twister does however come with clear instructions and with the fittings so you don't have to buy anything special for it. What is important though is the height of the tongue twister. It was to be fitted so the centre of the ball is at the height of the horse's withers. This makes it more comfortable for the horse as it is at the correct height.
The Tongue Twister can hold two Little Likits which can be put in either side of the ball where the Likit holders are. To get the Likit out you just need to use a pair of pliers and grip the sides of the pot and the Likit should just pop out. To make it fun and more interesting for my horses I put a different flavour Likit on each side as this seems to keep them entertained for longer. Also to make the Tongue Twister harder for the horse and more engaging you only need to use one Likit and gravity will put it down making the horse have to work harder for a treat.
Once the Tongue Twister was fastened to the stable walls and my horses could go back in they were instantly interested in it. It took them a while to figure out how to get the treat and they did find the ball moving a little unnerving at first but as soon as they could lick the treat they were hooked and gladly stood there for ages liking the treat which isn't as easy as it looks! I had the Tongue Twister put in a few weeks before Christmas as I knew I wouldn't have time to have them put in closer to the date and the Little Likits are still intact and can withstand quite a lot of licking before they need to be replaced. The plastic ball does however need a regular wipe as it does get covered in Likit saliva!
The Likit Tongue Twister is available from most equestrian retailers both online and in store and costs around £22.99. It comes in two colours, red and purple/lilac. It doesn't come with Little Likits so these are sold separately and cost around £1.99 each (they come in Apple, Banana, Carrot, Cherry, Garlic, Honey & Camomile, Natural Molasses, Mint, Salt and Sport flavours).
So far these have been a real hit with my horses and these regularly keep them occupied especially when they first come in their stable from the field. Fortunately they don't spend all their time liking them and will probably spend around 30 minutes giving them a lick before they get bored. However, they are positioned by their water troughs and I have noticed that when they have a drink they give the Tongue Twister a little lick before going back to their haynets!
Overall, a very sturdy toy which keeps them occupied for a while and provides them with a little stimulation whilst being confined to their stable. A great product ideal for horses in small spaces as it keeps them entertained. Definitely a recommendation from me and my lot!
