Medicines aren't supposed to be pleasant...

My dentist recommended me to give Corsodyl mouthwash a try when trying to come up with different approaches to tackle my seemingly endless battle with poor gum health. After I had agreed to give it a go, I was horrified at the cost, it was around £5 for a bottle, whereas other mouthwashes could be bought for around £1. However, I went along with it and gave it a go.

The mouthwash contains a fearsome sounding active ingredient: chlorhexidine digluconate, which is an antibacterial agent, and I imagine this ingredient is the reason that it was only recommended to me to use it for a month, not as a permanent part of my regime. I did so, and over the course of the month, the bleeding I’d suffered with definitely subsided so I definitely report that this product does its job. The measure to use is marked on the inner side of the lid – 10ml per wash, so I bought two bottles for the one month course.

The actual event of using the mouthwash I can only describe as horrible. The taste is impossible to describe, it’s how I would imagine various kitchen cleaners might taste. Of course, you don’t swallow the mouthwash, but you are recommended to rinse for one minute. For me, keeping this in my mouth for a minute was a genuine challenge. Not only did I struggle with the taste, but there was a kind of intense ‘zing’ going on, almost stinging around my cheeks and gums, really making my eyes water. I couldn’t wait for the minute to end to get rid of it!

The mouthwash can’t be used directly before or after cleaning your teeth, so the other thing about this is that you need to give special thought to going to do the mouthwash outside of the normal time you would be cleaning your teeth.

I haven’t been advised to have another course of this, but I do definitely report good results and therefore an effective product for gum problems, achieved in a short space of time.

      It does the job

For years, like many people, I have suffered from flare ups of gingivitis. Gingivitis is very uncomfortable and can even be quite painful, it makes eating a chore and overall it isn't good for your oral health. My dentist recommended corsodyl mouthwash which I now pick up in the chemist every time I have a flare up. It does as it says on the tin, it can be a little stingy if you are suffering from gingivitis the when you use it at first but it is worth it, use it as part of your daily dental hygiene routine and the flare up will be cleared up in no time at all.

Some people with gingivitis use Corsodyl all the time, I don't, I just finish out a bottle and if I get a flare up then I buy another, I have two reasons for doing this, one, it's quite expensive to buy on a regular basis, two, it actually stains your teeth and with prolonged use you will definitely notice it and well yellow teeth don't look nice so you will end up paying your dentist to have your teeth whitened.

I know the above info about teeth staining may be a little scary but really if you suffer from gingivitis there really is no other product to go for and your dentist will tell you the same. You can always get your teeth whitened, gingivitis can and does progress to gum disease, which causes teeth to fall out, I know which I would prefer.

      Does a fab job!

As with a lot of the other reviewers here, I was slightly dubious when it came to this product. I had an issue with my gums and could this really do what it said it was? It was also one of the most expensive on the market.

      What It Claims

If you have seen the adverts you will know that this is meant to stop bleeding gums and help fight a number of oral complaints. This also comes in a variety of flavours and should be used twiced a day.

      Did it Work For Me?

This is not for the squeamish, but I have suffered with bleeding gums for a long time. It has been checked and is nothing to worry about but I was told to give this a try. This did take a few days to take affect, but it has severely reduced my bleeding gums. Infact, most days they do not bleed at all. I recently had a horrendous gum infection and this managed to calm it down and dull the pain a little bit too. I was really impressed.

      Anything Else?

The oringal flavour tastes disgusting, the mint was is much better. You can use the cap to measure your mouth wash, half a cap will do.

This can be bought from most Supermarkets (where you will probably find the best deals) and from Superdrug and Boots who sometimes have 3 for 2 offers. This is sold for around £3.

      In Conclusion

I have now used a number of bottles of this and would not look to use something else - full marks well done Corsodyl

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Is very worthwhile if you want your oral hygiene to become better

I was recommended this after having an operation on my lip which would result in me not being able to brush my teeth for a whole month as well as various bumps, ulcers and sores in my mouth. I used this product 4 times a day which I found completely did the job.

It reduced all the various problems that the operation had caused on both my lip and inside my mouth. The solution was in no way painful and definitely contributed to the well being of my teeth. It prevented from any build up of food that had remained on my teeth. I would definitely recommend this to anybody who is looking for something that will protect their teeth or has had an oral operation as this claims to "promote healing" and it honestly does. This bottle alone will last you an extremely long time as well so its worth it for sure

Any woman who has had children will know the havoc it wreaks with teeth and gums. after suffering painful gums for a couple of weeks I decided to cut my losses and try this. The original flavour is not to my taste but the effect is wonderful. After only a few uses the pain had stopped and my mouth felt fresher and cleaner. I will be using this a lot in future, totally worth every penny.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      good specialist product

I tried this after my dentist recommended it for my occasional bleeding gums....I was a bit dubious because it is quite expensive compared to other mouthwash.

It is (as the advert says) a mouthwash for people that spit blood when they brush their teeth and it helps prevent gum disease.

I have been using it regularly for a couple of weeks and I have noticed a reduction in the amount of blood coming from my gums. I can't say whether it's going to stop my gums receding or prevent further gum disease because I'm not a dentist but I'm certainly not seeing much blood after brushing!

It tastes fairly fresh and minty and not medicated which I was a bit concerned about. It's not as minty as my normal mouthwash but it certainly wasn't unpleasant.

The only concern I had is that it says on the bottle that it may discolour your teeth...I haven't noticed any discolouring but I would be put off from further use if I do see any difference.

I would recommend this product and would buy it again.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

You can't worry too much about the cost of dental hygiene so give it a go.

A while ago I spoke to my dentist about gingivitis; I could see blood when I brushed my teeth. He suggested Corsodyl. It wasn't a wholehearted recommendation, more that it was easily available in chemists and supermarkets.

You can get it in mint, which is more pleasant than the original favour though at £4.99 for a 300ml bottle it is rather expensive. The active ingredient is called chlorhexidine-and Superdrug do a mouthwash with this in it for half the price: it's exactly the same.

Its main advantage is that it works: it did for me. However it can stain your teeth and that's why I stopped using it after a month. I'd try the Superdrug version just for the massive difference in price.

If a friend asked for advice about bleeding gums I'd say that Corsodyl worked and he or she should give it a go. But don't use this mouthwash for too long or it will discolour your teeth.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Pricey and doesn't taste great but works so well!

      INTRODUCTION
      --------------------
I have had a lot of problems with my wisdom teeth. They seem to come through a little bit at a time and then stop for a few months then start again. This is still going on after a couple of years. They have caused me a lot of problems and still aren't properly through!! Every time they start again I end up in a lot of pain, my gums get extremely sore, I have something wrong with them where they won't let my teeth grow through properly. The last time it happened the pain got pretty bad and I couldn't get in to see my dentist. I was recommended Corsodyl mouth wash.

I went out to Tescos (well actually sent my husband out!!) and picked up a bottle of Corsodyl Mouth wash. I got original flavour but you can also purchase mint flavour too.

      THE PRODUCT
      -------------------
One 300ml bottle, Original, cost £4.50. A pretty pricey mouth wash to be quite honest!

On the bottle it states that Corsodyl treats all gum problems, specifically; bleeding gums, irritated gums, mouth ulcers, gum disease and more.

Apparently there is an active ingredient in the mouthwash called chlorhexidine digluconate, it's an antibacterial agent that reduces plaque building up in the mouth and this ingredient is what is used to treat & prevent gum disease, promote gum healing after dental surgery or treatment, control mouth ulcers an maintain mouth hygiene.

      WHAT'S IT LIKE?
      --------------------
The bottle is a brown plastic bottle with a pink label on it (green if you go for the mint flavour!).

The cap once unscrewed and turned upside down has a little measuring line in it so you know how much to use.

The mouthwash is a pink liquid. In my opinion it doesn't taste very nice at all. It is very strong and tastes a little of aniseed. I usually like aniseed but to me in this it is not a pleasant taste.

      So... does it work??
      -------------------------
Well pretty much as soon as I started using the mouth wash I noticed a huge difference. As well as my wisdom teeth / gum problem, I have had a problem with bleeding gums almost every time I brush my teeth for quite a while now. This stopped almost immediately after using it.

      CONCLUSION
      -----------------
So to me this worked amazingly. It might not taste too great but definitely works! If you're having any teeth or gum problems I would definitely recommend giving Corsodyl a try despite the big price tag . It's worth it! It also seems to last a while so the price is not quite as bad as it first seems even though there are cheaper mouth washes out there. In my opinion I would rather pay more for Corsodyl knowing that it works rather than getting a cheaper alternative that might not work as well.

      5/5 for me!

I hope my review was useful, thank you for reading

the way to go but be careful

After being advised to use corsodyl mouthwash for bleeding gums by a dentist, i decided to give it a go. The first time i thought my mouth had quite literally set on fire and my eyes were watering like there was no tomorrow. It had got to be the most evil tasting thing i have ever tasted and even more so after brushing your teeth as it starts to turn your teeth a nasty colour. It does this for the first say week and then it seems to settle i found if you add a little water to it and do it at different times to brushing your teeth twice a day it works fine and does seem to do its job properly and as stated! Oh and another warning if used without water your tongue burns for ages after. But all in all it has seemed to work for me.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Great product for the cure of plenty of mouth ailments, bleeding gums no more!

After stopping smoking I started to regularly wake up in the morning with the most horrible taste of blood in my mouth. Now, I am not saying that if I had smoked I wouldn't be suffering from bleeding gums, it is just a coincidence, that I have never had bleeding gums in my life, yet the moment I cut out all the things that are bad for me they start to bleed. Anyway, if anyone has ever woken up with the taste of stale blood in their mouth, then you will know it isn't the most pleasant of experiences. A few days went by and this kept happening, so I decided I would do something about it. I had seen the "straight to the point" Corsodyl advert, which said something along the lines of "For people with bleeding gums", so I knew this was the stuff I had to get a hold of.

        == What is it? ==

Corsodyl is a mouthwash, and it comes in a few different flavours, although the one I opted for in this case is mint. The main ingredient in Corsodyl is Chlorhexidine Digluconate, for those without a degree in dentistry, this is an antibacterial agent which reduces the formation of plaque and is used to treat and prevent gum disease, promote gum healing after dental surgery, control mouth ulcers, maintain mouth hygiene and manage dental thrush. No I don't have a degree in dentistry either, I just read that from the label. It does have some weird instructions on the label for when not to use it, such as "anywhere other than the mouth", I can't imagine someone washing their hair with it or something, it's a bit sticky anyway. This mouthwash is not recommended for anyone under 12 years or during pregnancy/when breast feeding. The label is very informative, that it fills you with fear and dread reading it, am I reading a mouthwash label, should I be wearing a Hazmat Suit whilst handling this. After reading all the dos and don'ts, instructions for use are to simply fill the cap up to the 10ml line and rinse mouth for 1 minute, do this twice a day.

        == Price ==

This can be quite expensive for something that you swill around in your mouth and spit down the plughole. You can buy this from chemists and most supermarkets, usually near to the £4.00 a bottle mark.

        == Verdict ==

Like I said in the previous paragraph, it is expensive for spitting it down the sink, but it does the job. I only needed to do this for about 4 days before I stopped waking up tasting blood. So it does exactly what is says on the label, and after reading the label you feel as if you have taken some sort of step towards gaining that dentistry degree!

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Great value for money and really helped my wisdom teeth

After suffering continuous pain with my wisdom teeth coming through, my dentist recommended that I use Corsodyl gel, the speed that it worked surprised me, as nothing had worked before this. It helped the swelling around my teeth and alleviated the pain, the gel also worked for longer than I expected, as I was continuing to eat and drink after using it! The only downside would be the taste, which was very bitter and off putting, also was different to always get the gel to stay in my mouth as seemed to stick to my finger more than my gum, but when I weighed up the pros and cons, a bitter taste against finally being pain free was definitely worth it. I was also very surprised at how cheap this product was, as had expected to pay a lot more, so great value for money! Will reach for this product every single time my wisdom teeth begin to start hurting and could not recommend anymore.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

The gel is the only one I would recommend.

In this review I will discuss both the mint mouthwash and the gel. The Corsodyl Oral Care brand has many products such as toothpaste, floss, dental tape and toothbrushes but I will not be reviewing these only the products I have tried and tested, mouthwash and the gel. My mouth is generally healthy but the past year I have really suffered with ulcers. I don't mean one at a time, I mean four to six huge ones in my mouth at a time. After loads of tests they couldn't find the problem so they recommended Corsodyl. And here is my review on this product.

            PRODUCT
            ------------
I will first discuss the mouthwash. The first thing you need to know is one of the downfalls of this product. It leaves your mouth feeling like you have been licking carpet. I can't explain it properly but it basically feels like carpet burn in your mouth and you'll pretty much have that sensation all day. I was recommended to water down and I did but it still had the same effect. Now by now I went to the dentist, as I have to go every 6 weeks for my braces, and they told me to stop using it immediately because the mouthwash makes your teeth go yellow at an extreme rate. This is worse for me because I have braces and I would end up with two different colours on my teeth when they come to take them off. On a whole I am glad my dentist mentioned it and even recommended I take Iron tablet, which may I just say worked efficiently. So, not only does this product leave your mouth in discomfort and discolour your teeth it also doesn't work! These are the biggest downfalls of the product.

Whilst I was taking the Iron tablet my mother brought me the Corsodyl gel and may I say it worked brilliantly. I usually use Bonjella when I get an ulcer and it doesn't do much but as soon as I feel an ulcer coming I put a spot of this gel on and the next day it is gone. This gel mixed in with the iron tablets I have most efficient. The only thing about the gel is that it also leaves a horrible feeling in your mouth, so I highly recommend you don't use it on the tip of your tongue.

Now I used these products for ulcers but many others use them for infections, such as when your wisdom teeth are starting to grow and for gum disease. Now I am not sure how effective they are in these situations but all I can say is that if you have an ulcer use the Corsodyl gel. The mouthwash comes in two different flavours but I bought Mint as a couple of people had recommended that I should not buy the Original because it tasted horrible.

            COST
            -------
The first one I got on perscription at the doctors but the second I brought. You can get this is any shops that sell Oral care such as Superdrug or Wilkinson. You will have to shop around for a good offer and if your lucky you can find it for no more that £2.50 - £3.00. However, the mouthwash is harder to find. I searched all shops in my hometown and went to the city center and couldn't find it anywhere. In fact I also had it on prescription but all the chemists I went to were out of stock. However, I found this product in my orthodontist for £1.50. Considering, how hard it was to find I think that it is a reasonable price.

            RECOMMEND
            ----------------
If you are going to buy the mouthwash even though it wasn't effective for me, I would recommend the mint flavour and not the original. I haven't had the Original but a lot of people have told me not to buy it. However, I would highly recommend the gel and would say it is really effective.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Did what it should but given its potent nature it should be on prescription or sold by your dentist.

To my knowledge this product (I used the alcohol-free mouthwash) is used/advised for use to treat specific oral/dental issues. Which is where the product becomes its own worst enemy.

My experience of it is that during a routine dental appointment, scale, polish, discussion about holidays that only your dentist can translate into English, he noted an issue with a molar at the back of my set of gnashers. I won't go in to detail but it wasn't very well and he threatened to extract it. Meantime he told me to buy Corsadyl mouthwash and keep it clean - but avoid swilling it around my whole mouth if I can.

I duly did this and used interdental brushes too and hey presto, tooth improved so much that it has had a stay of execution - next D.O.E. yet to be set.

But the problem is that I now have a bottle of the stuff sitting in the bathroom cabinet gathering dust. If I'd've realised I might have bought a smaller bottle - but to be honest that wouldn't have helped as I still wouldn't have finished it!

Apparently overuse of this product can stain/damage your teeth. So in my opinion it shouldn't be marketed as a normal mouthwash product and should be available on prescription IN LITTLE BOTTLES!!

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

A really good product in the battle for toothcare

              Corsodyl.

Corsodyl is a mouth wash that contains an active ingredient called Chlorhexidine Digluconate, it also contains Chlorhexidine digluconate, Ethanol, macrogolglycerol hyroxystearate, ponceau 4R (E124) a colouring agent, aniseed flavouring oil, peppermint oil and water, when combined these are effective for getting rid of bacteria, virsuses and infections in the mouth.

              =300ML Bottle=
The bottle of Corsodyl that I had was the mint flavour, which is not the best tasting mouthwash, but as the old saying goes what doesn't taset good, does you good. The bottle was a glass bottle, and has a plastic cap, I purchased mine as I had a couple of mouth ulcers that were being troublesome.

=What can it be used for=
It can be given used for pre dental surgery and for afterwards to promote healing. it can also assist with bleeding gums, mouth ulcers and help to prevent the build up of plaque.

              =How to use=
You should allow at least half an hour after cleaning your teeth, and once you have removed the cap you need to locate the 10ml mark, as you fill the cap to this point with 10mls of the liquid. You swish this liquid around in your mouth for a minute, without swallowing, it is recommended that you do this twice a day.

              =If in doubt=
It is always worth checking with your dentist or ask at the pharmacy about the length of time you should be using this mouthwash as it is a strong mixture and care needs to be taken.

              =Warnings=
There are care instructions on the bottle, about use and not using the product.

              How did I feel=

This was like a bull in a china shop, it did an amazing job, and within 3 days my mouth ulcers had cleared up, and I was very impressed with this.

              =Would I recommend=
I would recommend this mouthwash for anyone who has gum problems as this is a strong and powerful solution.

              =Purchase=
This can be purchased from chemists and is currently around £5 per bottle.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

Excellent medical aid for treating many mouth ailments. But always follow the instuctions carefully.

Corsodyl is one of those necessary evils as far as I'm concerned. It works really well but it comes with some negatives.
My Dentist recommended Corsodyl to help with an infected wisdom tooth. After the first use I was beginning to feel relief so it is a fast-acting product.
However the negative side is probably it's strength, chlorhexidine is essentially an antiseptic bleach used to fight bacteria and fungi. It slowly penetrates the surface of the teeth and provides long-lasting protection. But it does burn and it can stain the teeth.
It is deceptively mild when you first rinse with it, it has a delicate minty taste and appears as an innocent clear liquid. After a few seconds your mouth begins to feel warm but it's still milder than most mouthwashes. However when you spit it out you realize just how hot and strong it is and it will continue to heat your mouth even after use.
The other downside is how it will affect your taste. I was horrified when I first used it to see the surface of my tongue turn white and I could hardly taste anything for the rest of the day. This effect is temporary and by the next day I had my sense of taste back and my tongue was a normal colour once more.

It is an excellent short-term solution to many tooth, gum and mouth ailments but it isn't for long-term use.
I always keep some on hand incase and I wouldn't be without it. Despite it's downsides I would highly recommend it.
