      great website, fair prices

Play.com was founded in 1998 under the name Play247.com, but later rebranded as Play.com in 2000. The website initially started out selling just DVDs, but quickly upgraded their inventory to most electrical items, and have even gone on to sell books too.

The Play.com website is very appealing to everyone, it benefits from neutral colors and has brilliant search options too. This is a shopping paradise for gamers, as the website has just about all the new releases for top name consoles such as Playstation four and the brilliant Xbox one. My partner pre-ordered my copy of Destiny on the play.com website, and found it to be very easy to do.

To pre order, all you need to do is set up an account with the company, which takes a couple of minutes to do, select your game and complete the check out it is as easy as that. As soon as the game is released you receive it in the post. The service is very easy to use, and there is also free delivery with everything too! Delivery is ALWAYS fast, on average I tend to get my products within three days of order, which is very fast compared to some.

The prices on the website are not the cheapest around in some cases, which would put some people off, but the games I have bough for my Xbox have always been reasonable, after all, most of the products are new!

Play.com used to allow people to sell their used games and films on the site, but they recently put a stop to this for some bizarre reason. I used to think this was a very good aspect to the site and it is a shame to see it stopped!

All in all, this is a useful website, that people can navigate around easily to find their favorite books games and films. For those who have not used the site, take a look. Shop from the comfort of your chair and have the privilege of free delivery too!

A great site when it works

I have purchased items from play.com for a good few years now. I heard about the site from a friend and I decided to check it out. A few years ago I think it mainly sold gifts for birthdays and Christmas etc. but now there are absolutely loads on there and postage is free!

The site is now very comparable to Amazon as there are now numerous sellers and there is just such a massive range of goods for sale on it.

A few years ago now the site seemed to change its name to Rakuten, I have no idea what this is all about but it still comes up as play.com. I think that it was around this name change time that play.com introduced Super Points. For every one pound you spend on play.com you get one Super Point, each Super Point is then turned into 1p that can be used to help pay for purchases. Obviously you need to spend a lot on the site to get much back but it is a good loyalty scheme although be careful as the Super Points do run our after time.

Last year when buying my Christmas pressies I was pretty annoyed with this site as it didn’t work! I would select the items and as soon as it got to the payment methods section it would freeze. I found out that this was down to a technical problem and the site not being compatible with certain versions of Microsoft Explorer. The meant really that I bought everything from Amazon instead. This issue went on for a long time but it is sorted now. It would have just been useful if a message was sent out to explain this at the time and then I could have used Firefox instead had I known.

Generally this is a really easy to use site that has loads of great products for sale at cheap prices and free postage!

I was trying to get some MP3's from them last night, for half an hour their system was telling me my card details are wrong and then my order wasn't showing up anywhere in there. Meanwhile it's all deleted from the basket.

So I quit and went to buy 'em from itunes and amazon. 4-5 hours later, play.com sent me an automatic email saying they've managed to process the payment and it's all available in my account. I contact their support to tell them to remove the MP3's from my download area because I'm not going to use them and issue a refund right away, because I did not at ANY point authorise them to keep trying to bill me.

Their system failed 3-4 times to take my payment when I wanted to buy from them, they can't just go ahead and try later on my behalf. Guess what, the refund is going to take 3-5 business days to be processed!
I lost nearly 2 hours trying to sort this out and they've still got my money....

My experience - no goods and they kept my money

This review of play.com was produced in November of 2013 after I discovered, on review of my credit card statements from June, I had not received a refund I had been promised. I followed all of their instructions for return of the product and was promised a refund within 3-5 days. I kept my proof of postage along with everything which was required, so my claim against them was without dispute.

The problem was, they delivered a different item to the one ordered, the item was returned, so now I am without both my money or any goods.

On chasing this up play.com , they sent me the following email which I quote:

"I have spoken to our Merchant Helpdesk regarding the return of the item. Unfortunately, due to the amount of time elapsed we are unable to assist further and you will now need to claim through the small claims court. I apologise for any inconvenience caused."

My verdict - do not deal with this company, they are immoral and dishonest.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

not as good as it used to be but still ok

      Discovering Play.com

I was "introduced" to Play.com about 7 years ago by a friend who said she brought all her DVDs/CDs etc from here and recommended I use it because at that point I was still using the high street and it had become quite expensive so I logged onto the website and had a look.

      What play sells

When I was first introduced to Play.com its main areas was DVDs, CDs, Games, books and some gifts/gadgets/clothes it has since expanded and its main menu now has the following tabs -

DVD (Includes charts, box-sets, limited editions etc)
      Blu-Ray (All Blu-ray DVDs)
Music (CDs and offers a downloadable service)
Video Games (Xbox, Wii, Playstation etc all games here)
Books (Includes charts and limited editions)
Clothing (Does a wide range of men, women and childrens clothes)
Sports & Outdoors (sports fitness equipment, clothing)
      Electronics (tablets, laptops, TVs, etc)
Computing & Office (Memory sticks, office joke gift etc)
      Mobile (phones, headphones etc)
Gifts & Gadgets (wide selection of gifts and funky gadgets)
Toys & Baby (good range of toys for all ages and baby gifts)

      Website layout/use

overall the website is very easy to use. You can click on one of the tab areas I gave above or search for things. The home page regularly updates to show offers which you can view. Logging on is easy, once you have registered for your first order it saves all your information (address, card details etc) for next time so all you need to do is log in and complete the order through, it will also show you your order history, allow you to cancel/amend/query orders and update any address or card details.

      Prices

Play.com does have a vast catalogue of items it sells. When I first started using them it was Play.com only selling but its since been expanded to include third party sellers, like Amazon does, thus allowing the product availability to expand with rare or collector items and other bits people sell on. Price wise is can vary from item to item and depending on the seller, but Ive found it is usually cheaper than the high street by some noticeable difference however I have noticed that it is becoming less competitive with the likes of Amazon, now I understand there has been a big to do with Amazon recently but for prices on items I buy they are massively cheaper, and do a much bigger range of products. I shall give you a example Jamie Oliver - I wanted the 15 minute meals book, in the shops I think it was £20, Play.com had it for £15 but Amazon had it at £10, that's 50% difference! I have had an account with Play longer than Amazon but now I use them both when shopping online and buy whoever is cheaper but 9 times out of 10 it is Amazon. Play used to be well known for offering free delivery on any time at any price so it was good for buying items less than £5 and the postage was free, since third party sellers have been allowed to invade it this is no longer the case, increasing prices even more.

      Loyalty Scheme

2/3 years ago Play started doing a loyalty scheme where you get SuperPoints, 1 point per £1 you spend and 1 point is equal to 1p. I haven't actually accrued enough points to "spend" yet but the website says they can be used for all or part payment of a item. This is good if you do end up using them a lot.

      Overall

Play used to be a really good website and I still do use it occasionally, but not as much as I used to. If you like shopping online then its worth viewing if its an item you can buy from here/Amazon etc because as much as I prefer Amazon sometimes it isn't always cheapest so its worth flicking between the 2 and get the best deal for you.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Not as good as it used to be

Ooh I can't remember when I started to use Play.com, it must have been a few good years ago. However I have not used it for well over six months (perhaps longer) as I have found much better service and experiences elsewhere online. However when I did use it a lot, the prices were very good and much cheaper than that of the shops on the local high street and this was one of the main things that attracted me to using the company for my purchases. The fact that they offered "free postage" too was something that also attracted me.

The actual ordering process was simply and orders would usually be dispatched within twenty four hours which is speedy. You could also log on and track your orders, as well as any pre orders you had on order.
Anything I ordered would usually arrive within 3 days, so the postage speed wasn't too bad. However bare in mind that it was free postage and I also live off the mainland and live on the Isle of Man, so these would slightly affect the delivery speed. However towards the end of my time with "Play.com" I found the speedy of delivery slowed down and on average orders would take five days to turn up. This might be down to Play, down to my local post or a mixture of both. However at this time I started using other online shopping sites, so the delivery issue made me stop using them.

As I haven't been on it for a while it may be the same, I.E quick dispatch and good prices. But it may have also got a who lot better. I can't really say as I haven't been on the site in a good while.

In summary I'd say they are pretty decent , certainly a lot better then some place and worth a visit if you are new to online shopping.

Terrible service with no notification, communication or explanation

Total waste of time - I ordered a box set on 11th Dec to arrive for a birthday on 30th Dec. I checked my account on 28th Dec and the order was open.

But then - on 4th Jan (today) there was a back-dated 'order decline' status with no explanation and no notification (the order was still open on 3rd Jan and on 4th Jan it appeared to be 'declined' from 19th Dec!). There was no reason for the order to be declined at my end (I had the money!!).

No response to 3 emails I sent to the seller and still waiting for a response from Play themselves (due to arrive tomorrow but unlikely that it will).

The most infuriating thing was the lack of response or communication. Lots of bad review of the seller (EntWarehouse) on Play.com but since my order was allegedly 'declined' I wasn't allowed to leave feedback.

I ordered the item from Amazon instead - cost a bit more but at least I know I'll get it. Also not optimistic that I'll get my money back from Play.com or EntWarehouse.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

Avoid, go elsewhere, so dodgy businesses like this do not get away with taking our money

I bought a book from play.com 6 weeks ago, which I never received. The seller has not responded to a single one of my emails. I have tried to get the refund from play.com. using their online form gets no response. I tried calling them on their ridiculously expensive 0845 number, holding on the line for 15 minutes before getting through to an agent, only to be told that I will need to wait a further 3 working days and on the fourth working day I will get a refund. This is already after waiting 15 days and raising numerous claims using their online service which says after 3 working days, they will offer you a refund. Fifth working day I sent them an email, no response as usual. 7th working day I called them, only to be told they have to raise a claim with the Head Office for a refund, which should be processed in ANOTHER THREE WORKING DAYS. That passed. Called them again the following week. Said they do not know what the hold up is, will check and email me later. Nothing. Have been sending emails every few days since then trying to get my refund, but play.com's customer services have not responded to a single one of my emails, possible 8 have been sent now, to help me get this refund from one of their sellers. I have now spent more on the phone calls than the worth of the book as I only have a mobile and they are in Jersey. The few quid you save from ordering from this site is not worth risking it over. And besides, if we don't collectively boycott organisations like these that treat customers in that way, then they will never change. Stand up for what's right and spend your money elsewhere with a company that offers excellent customer service like amazon or ebay.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Fabulous website, why go elsewhere??!

I cannot speak highly enough about this website! For books, DVDs and CDs I always head here first and they offer so many more products too, such as clothing, gifts and gadgets, electricals, phones, posters, consoles and plenty more. The choice is fantastic and it is rare that I don't find something a book, CD or DVD that I'm looking for on this website.

For me the main bonus about this website is that the postage is free on ALL items! It does now offer you the option of quicker delivery - next day - etc for a charge, but for the standard delivery it is always free. This for me makes it far better than Amazon, where I have usually found that the postage costs can add a fortune if I have been buying a few things. For instance you cab buy 5 books from play.com for zero postage or the same 5 books from Amazon and pay £2.50 or even more in postage PER ITEM!

Also the prices are very competitive. Compared with other sites they are usually around the same price or cheaper and when you take into account the free postage then it is a no brainer! As well as being able to buy new products directly from play.com there is also the option to buy new or used products via play trade. They are listed just the same but also tell you if they are used, what condition they are in, what rating the seller has, how long they take to dispatch etc and I have had many a bargain by buying second hand things - especially books - this way. You can leave feedback for a seller once you have bought from them which of course helps others when making their choices. Some sellers do take up to 10-14 days to get goods to you, but they clearly state this and there is always the next day option which you can pay for if it was very urgent.

The search facility is very easy to use and the layout of the site is great. There are often featured deals such as a range of DVDs for under £5, so you can just have a browse through, as well as searching for more specific things.

Paying / checking out is very quick and easy (again, better than Amazon in this way) and you can have more than one card linked to your account (which is also quick and easy to set up). The site also now offers the chance to earn 'super points' on some product purchases, they do seem to tot up fairly slowly but it is better than a kick in the teeth and once you've collected a few points you can redeem them against future purchases.

I have used this site for years and have no complaints at all.

            so much on one website!

Play.com is a site claiming it is for music moves and games, but it is also for so much more! As a customer I find www.play.com great, not only do they sell a wide range of things but they do some fantastic deals, for example 2 CD's for £5. Asides from music and games, www.play.com sells clothing, books, mobile phones, sports and outdoors things, toys and things for your baby, all sorts of electronics including computers and office things, and all sorts of gifts and gadgets. So, there is much more than music, movies and games! If you do order from www.play.com, they will dispatch your item for free within 3-5 days, or more quickly for a small fee, however if you do want your purchases more quickly this won't break the bank. Play even offer a credit card, if you so wish to purchase one, at 16.9% APR. Members of www.play.com can also sell their second hand goods on www.play.com, so as well as dispatching new items, Play dispatches second hand items and acts like Ebay, allowing sellers of their personal items too. In my opinion, www.play.com is the future, and if you haven't heard of it yet, then get on the website, because i'm sure you'll love it!

              Stay away from this site

I went on to play.com to buy an Irish rugby jersey. It was advertised on the site for Euro29.99 yet once it went into the cart it was Euro74.49. I got in contact with their customer service to bring it to their attention. they denied there was any problem and said that it was due to security on my computer. I told them there was no way this was the case as i have tried it on a three computers. They still claimed nothing was wrong. Mysteriously though it was fixed then! I then purchased it at the Euro29.99 price. This was on the 15th of April. Now, eight days later on the 23rd i get a mail sating that the item is no longer available? It took them eight days to realise the item wasn't in stock. This is an extremely bad way of treating customers and is extremely bad on play.com's part. I most certainly will never shop here again.

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              As per conclusion

              Introduction
Play.com is the second biggest online retailer in the United Kingdom and is in the top 50 largest online retailers in the world, so it is quite successful. It sells DVD's, music CD's, video games, books, electronics, gadgets, music downloads, clothes and accessories. I personally always like to shop around when I am intending to buy such things. I check eBay, Amazon.co.uk, Tesco, HMV and others before I sign on the dotted line, it varies across the board as to who is selling the product the cheapest but quite often it is Play.com.

              Website
The website address is www.play.com; it is unforgettable for first time visitors and effortless to recommend to friends, family and colleagues - a great decision by the directors, surely! Once on the actual site, you will find that it is fairly simple to navigate. If ever you get lost when browsing just click on the company logo in the top left corner of the page and it will take you back to the homepage, a nice little feature for the less experienced computer/web users. The main navigation bar runs along the top length of the page. It lists the sections/products of site from left to right, starting with 'DVD' on the left to 'Toy's & Baby' on the right. The bar is a glowing grey colour, with white text. This colour combination contrasts well, giving it a clean, organised look. When the cursor hovers over a product on the navigation bar a drop down menu automatically appears giving a list of that product's categories, for example hover over 'Music' and will give you a choice of 'Blues, Christmas, Classical, Country' etc. This is a very standard, simple and efficient setup. A search bar is located in a top, central position on the homepage, from here the user can type in anything to look for. To the left a drop down menu reveals a department to search in and a bright orange 'Go' button instigates the search, simple! A search of 'Madonna' in the music department returns three pages of items. They are presented in a very straightforward fashion; the album art is predominantly positioned with the title and a price underneath. This is standard across every page, which means browsing is efficient. A large orange 'Buy' button is placed under each item, and when it is clicked the item is added to the basket, which is located in the top right corner, a notification appears confirming this and the shopping can continue. Again this process is very, very straightforward - a major winner for Play.com. Each product section can be, which can also be refined. For example, under 'Books' > 'Art & Photography' you can refine your own search by 'Sub Category' (history of art, sculpture, fashion design, etc) by 'Format' (paperback, hardback, audiobook) by 'Author', by 'Price' by 'Narrator' and by 'Age'. This is very helpful if you don't know the exact product you want to buy. Another good thing about the website is that it has a bestsellers list, which can be helpful if you are buying a gift for someone, you can browse through the list to see what is popular. There are a few adverts on the website, they are quite attractive and easy on the eye. They are not necessarily intruding - not over the top.

              Products
Play.com started off just selling region 1 and 2 DVD's. Now it continues to sell region 2 DVD's as well as Blu-Ray's, music CD's, video games, books, electronics, gadgets, music downloads, clothes and accessories. Each category has a very wide selection of products, an absolutely massive catalogue of merchandise. The video game section has products for every current console including handheld ones and hardware. The bookstore is extensive, ranging from crime thriller novels to children's picture book to art and photography reference books and also audiobooks. Music has every genre and also has a bargain section. The clothes section has men's, women's, boys' and girls'. A lot of designer clothes are listed and things like jeans, shirts, swimwear and accessories. I purchased a hoody from Play.com, I received it in plastic cellophane wrapping and it was folded well with the tag so it is perfectly okay to buy clothing from here. Mp3 players, TV's, sim-free mobile phones and such things are also stocked; I have not personally bought from this section. And finally there is a section for toys and babies. Most products are competitively priced, but it is always good to shop around.

              PlayTrade
PlayTrade is a relatively new feature on Play.com. It's a way of selling your own items through the website, it is extremely easy to use and hassle free. I have had a lot of experience with this and can recommend it. All you have to do is search the item you're selling, click on 'sell it here', enter a selling price, and list the condition and a brief description, that's all. It will be listed immediately. There is a 10% commission for Play.com plus a 50p closing fee. I think this is good considering how easy it is to list and how many viewers it will get because of the website being so high profile. As soon as an item is sold you will be notified immediately by email from Play.com and once the item is posted, log on to the website and mark it as dispatched. Most of my items have sold very quickly. I have listed the same product on eBay at the same price and at the same time and every time PlayTrade has sold quicker. So if you need get rid of things quickly then I would go for this option. The money is stored in you PlayFunds account, you can use this to buy things on Play.com or you can transfer the money to your bank account for a small fee. You can also buy things from PlayTrade. I always do this if possible, although the items may not be new, they are far cheaper than buying direct from Play.com, it is safe to do so and I have never experienced any trouble.

              Payment and Delivery
The website is available in Pounds and Euros and the prices can be changed at the click of a button (located in the top right corner). VeriSign, Visa, MasterCard SecureCode and NatWest provide secure payment and all major cards are accepted. Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Solo, Gift Vouchers and as mentioned before PlayFunds can be used for payments. Everything is automatic so no need to worry about paying through PayPal or similar services. There is free delivery on every single item, items are usually dispatched within 24 hours and will take 3-5working days for delivery, this is very acceptable. However if you require a faster delivery then a first class postage system is offered, but this has an additional cost. This option has a delivery time of 2-3 working days, it costs £1.49 for a DVD sized package, clothing is £3.59 and items over 1kg carry a £5.99 price tag. Also there is an express delivery option (UK only), orders placed before the cut off time will arrive on the next working day, this costs from £4.99 to £8.99, I recommend the free option, but the choice is yours.

              Conclusion
Play.com is a huge website, millions of people use it and this proves it is a great online retailer. There is a massive catalogue of products and I have never been in a position where the item I want is not offered. Postage is quick and from my past experience, never delayed and items are always well packaged. Customer service seems to be good as well, I submitted an item query to the service team once, I received a prompt, exact response, well done Play.com. Prices are competitively priced, I do recommend looking through the PlayTrade section as you can probably save yourself a couple of pounds every time. Happy shopping!

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than deal with this shambolic outfit again.

About a year ago I ordered a mobile phone from Play.com. Having ordered countless gadgets through Amazon, I expected next-day delivery, or at least within four or five days. This didn't happen. The phone, in fact, never turned up. I emailed Play.com but they refused to do anything about it until 28 days had passed, during which time I was without phone and the money I had paid for it.

This experience really soured me to Play.com and I didn't see myself using them again. Nevertheless, about a fortnight ago I wondered if they had improved at all and placed an order for a wristband for jogging. The next day I had an "Item has been sent out" email but, to date, some nine days later, it still hasn't arrived. When I emailed Play.com about this they said that they would not look into it until 15 working days (so three weeks) had passed.

Absolutely shambolic. I can't believe that this company is still in operation. Save yourself some considerable heartache and time by simply shopping elsewhere. HMV.com and Amazon, between them, offer everything that Play.com stock, plus they won't keep your money and refuse to send out the goods.

                Advantages

                Disadvantages

                Wonderful online shopping

I started using Play.com back in 2006 when it relativily unknown, it was never advertised on billboards like it is now and I only found it while stumbling through the internet one day. I noticed that a lot of the DVD's were so cheap and it had free delivery which made it much better than HMV's online shop.

The store has come a long way since then, and now sells not only DVD, CD's and Games but also Toys, Electronics, and even Clothes! It is your one-stop shop now!

The webiste is easy to navigate and seperates all the products into categories. You can then do detailed searches - i.e the type of movie, and list them in descending/ascending/popularity etc orders. You then click 'Buy' and go the checkout once you're finished. You have to set up an account, with you name, address, email, credit card etc, but then this is all saved for your next visit. Delivery used to be free, but now you also have options if you need quicker delivery, but the free option is still available which gets your items to you in roughly a week.

Play.com has a ever increasing selection of products and I have never come across a game or DVD that hasn't been on there. Last year I did my entire Christmas shopping on the website which made my life so much easier, plus i used my playfunds to pay for it all, but ill get onto them. If an item is out of stock you can still order it and it is charged and dispatched as soon as it arrives. The whole process is so easy to use!

You can also sell you CD, DVD and Games under the Playtrade section of the website. Again you have to register but this is very straightforward. Then you can list you items (as many as you wish, there is no limit) and wait for them to sell. The website allows you to change details and the selling prices as required, and you can see who is selling the item the cheapest. Once sold, Play take a standard 50p charge and a 10% completion charge so an item that sell for £5.00 will give you £4.00 funds. Bear in mind that you have to cover the P&P yourself within the selling price. You can use the fund you acrue to send a deposit to your bank (Play will apply a small charge here) or use the funds to buy from Play to get the full value. I have sold tons of old items and as mentioned above, last year I used them for my Christmas shopping!

I love play.com and I always use it to get my music, films and games, it is often far cheaper than the shops, and it has deals on all the time on certain products which i worth looking out for. An amazing online shop!

                  Advantages

                  Disadvantages

Dont shop here if you need items quick, and even then just hope you don't have to contact them!

I have been a customer of Play.com for several years.
Before you purchase here 2 things to note:

                  1. All items state an estimated dispatch time - either within 24 hours or 3-5 days etc. IGNORE THIS. Items will NEVER dispatch on time. Their getout clause is stating that it's only an estimate!

                  2. Should you require a refund or have a problem with your item, be prepared for a battle. Customer service is terrible.

                  I purchased a USB Mic for £67.99.
Used a £65 gift voucher and £2.99 on my credit card.

Item stated dispatch in 3-5 days.
Waited a MONTH before receiving the INCORRECT ITEM.
Sent this back and never received any replacement.

                  Hence I initiated a refund.
Play.com state they have refunded the full amount of £67.99 onto my card.
Checked my card and only £2.99 refunded.
I've been ringing every day for the past week telling them they need to send me a refund voucher for £65, as I'm the original £65 voucher short.
They can't seem to get this and keep saying they need to investigate. I don't understand what is so hard to understand!!

Now been in touch with my credit card company who are also chasing the issue.

I will never shop here again and will never recommend this site to anyone.
                  You have been warned!
