Barnsley is constantly criticised in the press, sneered at for being a working class town. But let me tell you, Barnsley has pulled itself up by its boot straps lately and is now a great town to shop in. Market Barnsley's markets are huge. On market days the town is alive. The indoor markets are permenant and then on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday the outdoor market springs into life. The fish market is to the rear of the indoor market and also has the meat market in the same area. The indoor market has lots of fruit and veg stalls. It is intriguing walking around and seeing the range of goods on sale. There are carpet stalls, computer stall, clothing, fabric etc. One thing that all the stalls have in common is that the goods are all at bargain prices. On Tuesdays it is the 'Rag and Louse' market. This is the second hand market where you can buy everything and anything. Personally I tend to avoid this at all costs as I can think of nothing worse than buying second hand underwear! Town Centre The town centre has a parade of shops including Littlewoods, Marks and Spencer and Boots. There are all the usual shops that you would expect to find on a good high street. The shops are smaller than in the modern shopping centres but still have a good range of choice. For clothing you will find: Principles, New Look, Top Shop, Mark One, Etam. There are a number of opticians in the town centre too. W H Smith's has a prominent position and a Body Shop has recently opened. The town centre is a pedestrian only zone and so there are no busy roads to cross. There are plenty of benches to sit on if you like to watch the world go by. It is fairly pleasant and usually litter free. Alhambra Centre This is a relitavely new addition to shopping in Barnsley. It is a small, undercover shopping mall which is on 2 floors. It is fully wheelchair accessible with automatic do ors and lifts. Inside there are various shops including: Wilkinson's - a huge shop selling everything at cheap prices. Next - a small branch which can be difficult to get around. Woolworths. Mothercare - carries a small selection of goods. Barnsley Football Club's shop - you can buy replica kits etc. Primark - sells bargain clothes for all the family, this is a very big store. There is also a hairdressers, other clothing shops (one sells designer labels at discount prices), stationery store, car accessory store, sports shop etc. The centre also has toilets on the second floor which are always well maintained and its own pay and display car park! Arcades There are a number of small arcades which house more specialist shops such as handcrafted furniture and book stores. Follow the crowds and you're sure to find them! Banks The town has easy access to all major banks. Most are situated to the far end of town in the opposite direction to the Alhambra Centre. Ask one of the locals, most people are very friendly. Hope you have a happy shopping trip and thanks for reading!
