Last Christmas my 3 year old twins were spoilt rotten with toys, all sorts of characters they followed through the tv and they always had one each to try save arguments, but one toy they had between them from a family member was a set of walkie talkies, for obvious reasons.
These walkie talkies though were in fact Buzz Lightyear walkie talkies.
These can be purchased on Amazon for roughly £9.99 - £12.99.
They look fab! They would be a hit just to look at for any little toy story fan. Each walkie talkie is exactly the same, both looking exactly like Buzz Lightyear himself, with his face being the main feature covered by a see through screen - acting as his 'protective helmet' and the casing of the walkie talkie looking just like Buzz Lightyears suit, being white, green and purple. It has a long bendy blue 'antennae' with a purple tip to continue the buzz lookalike theme. He even has his star command logo on him and 'button' resemblance on his suit with a red button on him. There is an obvious small light on the front of him and on one side is the on/off switch and the other is the 'push to talk' button.
They looked very exciting when we first opened them anyway and my boys couldn't wait to pretend to be buzz lightyear flying around the house and talking to each other from one of our 3 floors.
To switch them on though I had to purchase batteries firstly as unfortunately they didn't come with any. The batteries needed for these walkie talkies are 2 x 9V batteries.
The packaging clearly states that these walkie talkies are suitable for indoor and outdoor use, which was a bonus on top of them looking just like Buzz Lightyear.
My twin boys waited eagerly as I unscrewed the back of the walkie talkies to insert the batteries required, once in I switched the on/off switch up and that little red light switched on - obviously indicating the walkie talkies were all set and ready to go. My twin boy space rangers quickly shot off to contact woody and jessie, one space ranger set off to the top floor whilst one run down to the bottom and I waited in the middle to hear their laughter and chatter. However this was not the case, before I knew it I could hear 'Mummmm i cant hear him'. Great, walkie talkies you can't hear?! makes sense don't it!
My boys brought the walkie talkies to me so we could see if maybe they were too far apart but even when stood close together you could barely hear anything, they were useless, you'd hear more whispering from room to room without the use of these.
Yes these walkie talkies look great, fit in perfectly with the toy story theme and would get any child excited, but the whole purpose of walkie talkies is to be able to communicate away from each other, and this is something you can't possibly do with these as you really can't hear anything. A little noise here and there but that is about it. I wouldn't reccomend buying these to anybody, they may look fab but it just proves the saying don't it 'don't judge something by it's looks' lol!
When my daughter has a craze on something, it really is a crazy and you will gradually notice toys from whichever craze it is taking over the house. Toy Story is no exception to this rule and I am forever picking up bits and tidying them away.
She wanted to role play part of the film where they use walkie talkies to discover which new toys Andy has been given for his birthday and she was thrilled to receive the Buzz Lightyear Toy Story walkie talkies as a gift her birthday.
The main body of the walkie talkies is designed to be like Buzz Lightyear's space suit. It is green, white and purple like the man himself and then in the middle is a 3D like Buzz Lightyear face. The walkie talkies are made from a hard plastic and should withstand being dropped by over excited children. On the back of both of the walkie talkies is a little plastic clip so your child can clip it on to their wasitbands etc. The antennae is blue in colour with a little purple cap over the top to prevent any eye poking incidents which you just know will happen.
The walkie talkies are easy to set up and get them going. It is just a case of unscrewing the little panel at the back and connecting a 9v battery and then screwing it all back together. A 9v battery is required for both of the walkie talkies. It takes less than 2 minutes to do so no worries about impatient children with these!
The first problem I encountered with these walkie talkies was that I didn't know the distance they covered. Why did I not look at the intructions I hear you ask? Because even though these were purchased from Amazon they instructions were in every language except English. Fabulous. So it was going to be a case of working the distance and volume control alone.
I worked out that the on/off button was a little slide button on one side of each of the walkie talkies and the red light on the front of the handset lights up when it is switched on and working. On the otherside there is a button which is purple and you push this in each time you want to speak. Easy. Haha at not needing any instructions!
My husband took over in playing with these with our daughter. I think he was just as excited as she was to be honest! My daughter ran down one end of the house to the bathroom and my husband stayed in the lounge. Now I must stress that our house is not massive and from the way it is laid out you can see the bathroom from the living room so the walkie talkies were being used at a practical distance and probably not out of range.
Both husband and daughter were pressing the button on the side and talking into them but were getting nothing but static. They couldn't hear each other. They tried for a good 20 minutes before my husband went and got my daughter from the bathroom more than ready to chuck the walkie talkies out of the window. A while later my husband sat down side by side with my daughter and try to get them to work that way but even sitting next to each other these things just would not work.
These walkie talkies are complete rubbish and just do not work. We sent them back to Amazon as they were a complete waste of £9.99. Definately avoid these and buy something else. Rubbish is the only word good enough for them.
After my son had received as much "Toy Story" merchandise as I thought we could fit in the house, my darling mum saw these on offer at our local B&M store, and with them being such a good bargain she felt compelled to buy them.....and yes, she has used this reasoning before with my long suffering Dad!
The product I will now review is - "Toy Story - walkie talkie's"
These walkie talkies have the face of "Buzz Lightyear" on the front of them, with his spacesuit from the show being the outer casing to the toy.
These are incredibly easy to set up, with there being a small battery cover on the back of each unit, you simply unscrew the cover (you will need a tiny phillips head screwdriver for this, though we have had to invest in a smaller than average set, as most children's toys need these nowadays!), then attach the single 9v battery to the attachment inside the unit, then screw the cover back on and you are ready to go.
I would love to be able to give you reams of information on what sort of distance these are capable of being used over, the volume of the unit, etc....but unfortunately the instructions that came with the set were all in Spanish, which in fairness is probably why my mum was able to get them so cheaply!
My house is not too big, so I usually tell one child to go into their bedroom then the other either into the hall or at the bottom of the garden, then try taking into them.
There is an on/off slide button on each unit, with there being a red light on the front of each to show they are switched on, then there is push in button which should be pushed in when speaking into it, with there being a small mouthpiece on the front.
Do these work.....no! These quite possibly the worst walkie talkies I have ever seen, and bear in mind my dad would set up tin cans on string when I was a child, and even they surpassed the capabilities of this product!
On the upside these are made from sturdy plastic, so if and usually when, these are dropped they don't shatter into a thousand pieces.
There is also a good sturdy clip on the back of the units, perfect for clipping onto a belt or pocket, ideal for role playing, and there is even a rubber bung on the end of each antennae to prevent any "poking" incidents, you know usually in the eye area!
The downside is the fact that these really are rubbish! There is no difference from the button being pushed in, with some units we have had in the past making a crackling sound when the "speak" button is in, this usually gives you a warning that a message is coming.
My husband sat and talked to my daughter for a good five minutes before he lost his temper and just shouted it through the door, she was completely oblivious to him up until that moment!
This set is available for purchase from www.amazon.co.uk for the sum of £9.99, though were available for purchase from our local B&M store for £5.00.
Do I recommend......not in this lifetime, save yourself a few quid and get some cans and string!
