The kids are over the moon to finally have their own Mr Potato Head.

One toy that the kids have been hankering after for a long time has been the Mr Potato Head as familiar from my own childhood and still ever popular thanks to Disney's Toy Story trilogy of films. Still made by Play school, there are now many variations on the theme. You can buy Mr and Mrs Potato head together in a duo pack, ones that look like other film characters like Spiderman or Optimus Prime, or you can stick to the original format. For someone older, I think the recognisable parodies of other characters are pretty cool if the gift recipient has a favourite franchise, and I can imagine that these are popular with older teens and people in their 20s and 30s who remember the toy fondly from childhood. However, my little fans are over the moon to finally have their own original version.

This was a gift for my youngest son, so I am not entirely sure what was paid for this but looking on amazon it is somewhere in the region of £20, which is probably fair for what you get in the set.

Mr Potato head comes in a little suitcase that is shaped like his own body with feet. It is sturdy enough to stand up on a shelf when not in play and has a little carry handle to walk from room to room with. The case has one weak point - the clasp located in the top of the case in the middle of the handled section. This opens by just pushing down on a circular piece of plastic, so it is very easy to press it and open it when you don't mean to. I guess this is to make it easy to open for the kids aged 2 plus who can play with this.

The case is otherwise ample big enough to hold everything that came with the toy and for a small child to be able to work out how to get it all back in the box by themselves - very important in my house as my kids need to keep their toys in one place or risk the dog chewing it. The plastic is see through so you can see the contents when the case is shut, and it is also well made so there is no danger of the hinge breaking or the case cracking through normal use in my opinion. It is quite heavy when full, but my kids have no difficulty carrying this about themselves. A 2 year old might want a bit of help.

Inside the case, Mr Potato head is the main piece, and he has one pair of blue shoes. His body has nothing printed on it, but has various holes all over to give the child places where they can put the accessory pieces. There is no specified way to play with this, apart from perhaps that the feet need to be slotted into the base of the potato body to make it stand up stably. At the rear of the body is a little hinged door, so if you want you can put some accessories inside the potato. You are then free to make a face in any way that you choose.

My sons are fans of the 'Picasso' style faces as modelled in the Disney films. There are various mouths, tongues, eyes, moustaches, arms, ears, noses and hats to make a face with. The set comes with a total of 35 peices so there is plenty there to keep my sons happy while they are playing. He even has a little microphone on a stand to play with. Our only difficulty with the accessories is that my kids find it a little tricky to put the earrings onto the little plastic ears. They probably could do it themselves if they persevered but it seems far easier to ask mummy to do it for them.

They have had a lot of fun with this set since they got it. They don't seem to play with it for more than maybe ten minutes at a time while they make a few funny faces. But, it is something they are happy to keep going back to and playing with and making each other laugh with the faces that they made.

I am quite glad that we have this set. I just wish that there was a better clasp on the case and then it would be pretty perfect.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        A good toy

I think it is so important for children to have lots of different opportunities to play when they are growing up and so I made sure that my son didn't just have electronic toys to play with as I wanted him to learn to use his imagination. One present that he received from one of my friends as a Christmas present when he was two and a half was the Mr Potato Head silly suitcase and this product is being sold and still going strong now and so I thought that I would review it.

The Mr Potato Head silly suitcase comes in a plastic case which is made from a clear plastic so you can see the contents inside straight away. It has a carry handle too and so you can carry it around like a little suitcase really easily which was something my son used to like to do but I think the fact that it keeps the toy so self contained also makes it ideal for taking out to peoples houses and such like where you know there are going to be limited opportunities for play for your child.

My son was familiar with Mr Potato Head because of the Toy Story films and so I would imagine most children will be aware of who he is but even for those who aren't familiar this is still a really good toy to own in my opinion.

Inside the case you actually get a tough Mr Potato Head "head" which is your basic thing that you need to use this toy. He comes assembled as the familiar looking Mr Potato Head that many of us will be familiar with but also inside the case there are forty different accessories which can be used to create different looks for Mr Potato Head. Inside the case you get 2 pairs of eyes, 3 noses, 6 arms, 6 ears,2 hats, 4 moustaches, 4 mouths, 2 tongues, 1 pair of pants with shoes, 2 pairs of eyeglasses, 1 earring, and 1 microphone and so there is plenty of scope for creating different looks for Mr Potato Head.

What struck me with this set was just how well made the pieces included were. They are made from plastic which is brightly coloured and so appealing to a young child. Many of the pieces feel quite flexible yet they are incredibly tough too. We had no issue with any of the pieces breaking in the three years that we owned this toy and my son or friend's children played with this. My only slight niggle with this set was that it could be tricky to fit all of the pieces back in the case and then clasp it shut and so sometimes the clasp on the case would come open whilst in my son's toy box and all of the accessories would fall out to the bottom of the toy box making it a bit of an annoying task to find them all again before playing with it.

My son used to love sitting and playing with this set and creating different looks for Mr Potato Head and because he had some other Toy Story character toys he was able to integrate Mr Potato Head in to his games when he played with them too. My son was probably four when he stopped playing with this but we did keep it for another twelve months or so because some of my friends have younger children and they were able to play with it but after that we passed it on to my friends daughter who also spent time enjoying this toy.

This toy costs around £15 on amazon and I think it is probably worth this amount for a child who is around two to three years as they will get a good couple of years play out of it and then it will be fit to be passed on to someone else or even listed on ebay afterwards.

Thank you for reading my review!

        Disadvantages

Great old fashioned toy suitable for all ages

As I child I always wanted one of these so for my daughter this Christmas I had to get her one. I picked the silly suitcase as it looked like hours of fun.

On opening the suitcase I was surprised at actually how many pieces there were. There are different shoes, noses, arms, eyes lips and different whole outfits that you can create with the matching hats and even a shirt. You can even create a Police Man.

My daughter is only one but she is able to change all of the pieces as they are really easy to select and change at random. All of the pieces are a good size and it is easy to find the matching parts.

The only negative to this toy is packing it back into the suitcase. Even if you put some of the pieces inside the potato you still find it hard to fit it all back into the case.

        Learning:
While playing with this toy my daughter has been able to develop various skills such as hand eye coordination ( selecting and inserting the relevant parts of the body) She has been learning to name the colours as there are various colours for the noses etc. As well as the parts of the body.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

          Super novelty toy

I remember a time - many years ago, when 'Mr. Potato Head' required a real potato - a humane use for the humble spud which didn't involve boiling or frying! No longer is this the case however, and the modern day version of the old-skool action figure comes complete with a 'fake potato' body. If you've never heard of Mr. Potato Head before, he's basically a plastic potato featuring a number of small holes, into which you can add all manner of facial features, body parts and accessories - ears, eyes, noses, feet, hats, even stethoscopes and sheriff badges - you name it, Mr. Potato has probably had it pushed into his torso at some point!

          - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A Potato with a Back-story - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Sold for the first time in 1952 by Hasbro, Mr. Potato Head found a resurgence of fame when he was featured in the animated film 'Toy Story', and then again in 'Toy Story 2' where he was voiced by Don Rickles. Since that time, the franchise has really taken off, and nowadays there are a range of Mr. Potato Head sets available. Today I'm reviewing the 'Mr. Potato Head Silly Suitcase', a forty-piece kit containing everything you need to get started and more.

          - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Price & Availability - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Packaged in a transparent plastic suitcase with a sturdy blue handle at the top, the kit is made by Playskool and costs just under £13 from toyshops - the amazon.co.uk price is actually a little more expensive, retailing at £15. I feel that this is especially good value for money considering the amount of pieces (40), and the high quality of the parts.

          - - - - - - - - - - - - What Does the Silly Suitcase Contain? - - - - - - - - - - - -

The set includes; one Mr. Potato Head body, four pairs of ears, five pairs of eyes, two sets of teeth, four mouths, two tongues, four noses, three moustaches, one pair of glasses, two pairs of earrings, one flower, six arms, one baseball cap, one hard hat, one visor, one pair of feet, and two pairs of shoes.

          - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The Parts - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

All of the parts listed above are bright and colourful, and made from sturdy plastic. There are a few smallish parts which younger children shouldn't be left alone with, and therefore the product has a recommended age of two and over. One particular downside of the set is the fact that it's almost impossible to get all the bits back into the case once you're finished playing with them, an you're left wondering how they fitted inside in the first place! The plastic potato body is around seventeen centimeters high, and ten centimeters across - it vaguely resembles a real potato, although it certainly wouldn't fool anyone! The accessories fit solidly into place, and once on, items like the arms and legs can be swiveled round to create different poses. The set is definitely fun to play with (I don't just mean for me, my nephew loves it too!), and you can lose a fair bit of time messing around with different facial combos.

          - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Final Word - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

Overall, Mr Potato Head Silly Suitcase is an excellent kit which contains enough combinations of parts to create literally thousands of unique faces for our plastic friend. The price is especially reasonable, and I would highly recommend the set as a fun and well made toy.
