This is listed as 14+, most likely because failure to follow directions can result in accidents. I do think it is appropriate for much younger children with adult assistance.
The toy consists of a plastic base into which you add baking soda, a clear purple plastic body, which you fill with vinegar, plastic fins which attach to the rocket, instructions which you really should follow, and a measuring spoon for the vinegar. Because the fins often come off during flight and it is possible to lose them, they give you a couple of spares, which I thought was nice. I believe the fins are made to detach to prevent breakage as this does land with some force.
The test: we read the directions and I let my son measure the baking soda and pour in the vinegar. I carried the toy outside and put the two parts together and we all stood back and waited for launch. We waited and waited. The instructions clearly say do not ever lean over the rocket, but I was quite sure it was not going to launch so bent over to pick it up. Naturally, at that point it launched and I was covered with vinegar in baking soda, most of which seemed to make its way into my eyes. I can assure you it really burns, so much so that tears began streaming down my face. So there I stood, white baking soda in my hair, vinegar in my eyes tears streaming down my face. Once they knew I was not hurt, the children found it hilarious. I will say though, with a good baking soda fuel load, this launches with some force and could injure a child leaning down over it. Adults must insure children stand a few feet back.
After adjusting the baking soda a bit though, we tried again and it launched much more quickly easily clearing the 30 ft this claims to fly. I do think it went much higher. The only problem had been our baking soda being old and my failure to follow instructions. This was launched again and again until we ran out of vinegar. I will be buying more vinegar and baking soda for this today. It really is a wonderful toy and both children love it, as do the neighbour children who ran out to watch.
I would highly recommend this toy, but also recommend you read the instructions carefully.
