      A good second serving for the N64 but not as good as Ocarina

      THE PREMISE A few years after Ocarina of Time came out the N64 still had enough life left in it to support another Zelda outing. Majoras Mask takes place after young Link comes back fom the future and is out searching for Navi, his old fairy friend. Madness ensues when a Skull Kid steals his horse and ocarina and eventually curses him and turns him into a Deku Scrub. Link wakes up in another world and has another mission to comlete. His must save the new world of Termina before the moon smashes into it within 72 hours, get himself back into regular form and help the inhabitants of Termina with their problems. GAMEPLAY If you were expecting a very similar game to that of Ocarina of Time, you would be wrong. You must use your ocarina (when you get it back) to turn the clock back in order to set right all of the areas of Termina. Time is always ticking so you only have a limited amount of time to complete a task before you must turn the clocks back. This doesnt really make the game harder however because the 3 days seem to last quite a long time. There is also the issue around masks that the world exists upon. You must collect lots of masks that perform functions to help you through the game. In some cases they change your form such as the goron mask, zora mask, deku mask and the Fierce Deity Mask. While in these guises you can have special moves or powers, such as swimming under water, spinning etc. GAME SPECIFICS The overall feeling of the game is to create nostalgia for the original game. Many of the character sprite have been reused but this time have been given specific personalities instead of just background filler. It is also interesting to note that every character has his or her own routine which they perform everyday unless you cause events to change that. This causes lots of side quests you need to stop or make certain things happen in order to gain masks. FEEL OF THE GAME One thing about the game that is of note is it's general mood, unlike Ocarina that always had an almost whimsical light heartedness and dramatic inserts, Majoras Mask is a plodding durge of destruction. Everything is depressing, the moon always hangs over you with a ghastly frightening face permanatly remiding you that its there. The screen shakes on the last 24 hours and the music gets even more bleak. The characters you meet have dreadful woefilled lives, for example a young couple (Anju and Kafei) that are due to be wed have disaster strike when the man gets turned into a young boy and runs away leaving the woman depressed. The two farming girls discuss their fathers death and how lonely they are, especially the elder of the two who explains her heart ache over Kafei. One girl keeps her decomposing dad in the wardrobe while another (Lulu) has just had a clutch of baby Zoras and has her boyfriend die. See, it's al depressing and even after you've helped them out 72 hours later you have to go back in time again and their woes are present again. It is a good game but the slog (the storyline and music) make it less enjoyable. Ocarina of Time is still very much the better game but if they had tightened up on the music and storyline this could have been as equally as good. However the best thing about these problems are that it helped guide the creators into perfecting Twilight Princess - a story that could have been very dark. Well done Zelda team

      This review is on Legend of Zelda Majora's Mask; this is the second Zelda game to be released onto the N64. The aim of the game is to get the mask called Majora's Mask from this evil kid, before he brings destruction to Clock Town. Clock Town is the place you are at the start, well about to enter it. Link is a boy who was raised in a forest; his first game was Legend of Zelda Ocarina of time, and that is the beginning of his adventures. He is a kid that finds a sword in a forbidden area, and a shield. After this adventure, the game Majora’s Mask was made. At the beginning of the game, you find this old man, who carries masks, and he gives you Majora's Mask. But this evil kid of some kind steals it from Link, and puts it on. You have 72 hours to till the world comes to an end, from the power of that mask. But luckily, you have the ocarina, and you can perform a song that make you travel back into the past, back to when you first started out. At the beginning after that part, you get this Deku mask stuck on you, and you turn into a Deku, and you do this mission thing, where you are searching for a person to take the Mask off of you. Once you get it taken off of you, you will be able to put it on and off as you will. You will need to put it on again further in the game. There are loads of other masks that you can find, and buy, which all have different powers. You will need certain masks to get to certain areas, so you can get further into the game. The further you are in the game, the more powerful masks you will find. When you equip them, you will have certain powers. But you won't just find them lying around on the ground, they will be in high places, or they will be given to you as a gift for helping them or stuff like that. Or you win them in competition type things. The currency in this game is Ruby's, which when collected. You can buy stuff, like shields bombs and all that type of things. Green Ruby's are worth 1, Red Ruby’s are worth 20, Purple Ruby's are worth 5, and Gold Ruby's are worth 10. You will need to collect these rubies so you can buy equipment so you can defeat your enemies quicker. You can hold a maximum of 99 ruby's with the small wallets, then you can get a bigger wallet further in the game, till then you can keep your rubies in the bank, if you don’t put them in the bank, and you play the song to travel you back in time, you will loose all your ruby's. You will have to do loads of little things as well, so you can get more life hearts, you start off with 3 of them, and if you find these special blue hearts, you will get a quarter of a life heart, and when you find 4 of them, you will have another life heart pop up so you will be able to live for longer. The game is very enjoyable; you can entertain yourself in this long action packed adventure, to save the world. The game is very addictive, you could be playing this for hours on end, and you won't have completed it, so you will need to keep trying and trying. The game is very original, you don’t find many games like this, accept the other Legend of Zelda games. The graphics of the game is very good, you will like the graphics as they are smooth, not too pixily either. You will like the game because of its graphics. The sound of the game is good, it has good soundtrack, when you go to different areas, and it will have different music, and at night time also. There are no voices in this game, accept little things, like a bark noise of something stupid like that, other then that the talking is in type form. The sound affects are good, when you are attacking people with your sword, the music you play on your ocarina, and all that is great. The game is not really that difficult at the beginning then it goes into hardcore hardness, where you will need strategic thinking, to pass the challenges, and tackle the bosses you will come against. This game is really good, it is worth the money, it costs around 10 - 20 pound, depending where you get it from, but as it is an old game, you will have trouble finding it. If you have a Gamcube, you can get the Legend of Zelda Wind Waker Collectors Edition, which has Majora's Mask and some other old Zelda games as well. I like this game; I use to own this for the N64 till I sold the game, which was a big mistake. I will give this game a 4 star, because it is a good game, and I enjoy all the challenges you have to do.

        The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time was doubtlessly one of the Nintendo 64's finest moments. Game magazines across the board proclaimed it, in one way or another, the Best Game Ever. Gamers stood in sizeable lines before stores opened to pick up the newest chapter in the Zelda series. At the small store I had preordered Ocarina at, customers almost rioted when the manager announced that the shipment had been screwed up and that the game wouldn't arrive until two in the afternoon. People wanted the game bad, and when they got it, they weren't disappointed. Two years later, the Nintendo 64 is breathing its last. Dreamcast is having a resurgence of popularity, Playstation 2 had a massive launch, and X-Box and Gamecube announcements have been making a lot of noise. With all the next-generation excitement hitting hard, a new installment in the Zelda series has easily been overshadowed by all the other events happening in today's gaming world. Too bad. Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask easily lives up to the high standards set by its N64 predecessor. After his adventure in Ocarina, Link embarks on a personal journey. Traveling through a forest, he is ambushed by the Skull Kid, who steals the Ocarina of Time, Epona, and turns Link into a Deku Scrub. Skull Kid also stole Majora's Mask from a mask salesman, and if it isn't returned in three days, the moon will crash into the earth. With the weight of the moon on his shoulders, Link takes up the task to set things right in this strange world. Majora's Mask is less a sequel and more a remix. All the citizens of Clock Town are identical to counterparts in the various areas of Hyrule. Because of the whole "alternate universe" concept, the creators of Majora's Mask gained the freedom to re-use different characters' physical aspects while completely reworking their place in the game world. The character previously known as Ingo has become twin brothers who run a crooked horse race. The morbid kid who hung around Kakariko's graveyard has become an entire club. Everything is familiar, yet not quite the same as in Ocarina. Of course, with two years on Ocarina and the use of the 4MB Expansion Pak, Majora's Mask would be expected to look better than its predecessor. It does look better, but it doesn't make any great leaps in terms of Nintendo 64 graphics. The colors look keener, and the graphics in general look sharper. Ocarina's foggy areas were negligible, and Majora does away with them altogether. While certainly a step up, Majora's Mask still can't quite reach the awe-inspiring graphics that could be found in Rare's Banjo Kazooie. Majora's Mask reuses most of Ocarina's sound effects, but Majora really shines in its soundtrack. The developers really put in extra effort when they thought of ways to use Majora's score in creative ways. When Link first enters Clock Town, he is greeted by the opening bars of Ocarina's Hyrule Field theme before it breaks into a new song. Clock Town's theme is a pleasant, yet busy, piece that does a nice job of representing the sleepy town getting ready for its annual festival. When stepping outside of town, players get a shot of nostalgia via an update to the classic Zelda theme. Eventually, Link must help the singer of a Zora rock band get her voice back. All the band members jam away in their separate rooms, and the "schooled" Zelda player will recognize the jams as great themes from Zelda games past. It's small touches like that which really please me. A truly great story-driven game makes players feel like the hero's plight is their own, and Majora's Mask gels a variety of elements to let players in on Link's world. The game is surrounded with an overwhelming feeling of urgency. There are only three days time for Link to get his work done, bu t he has the ability to warp back to day one at any time. It would seem difficult to give a real feel of the impending doom if players can easily leap from harm's way, and to compensate, Majora's Mask goes to great lengths to constantly remind players that time's a-wastin'. Each morning the new day is announced by bold, blocky white letters on a solid black screen, accompanied by a basso boom. On the third day the music continues as normal, but there are now a series of undertones that give the feeling that something is going horribly wrong. The ground shakes occasionally under the strain of supernatural events taking their toll. Worst of all, Link can look the moon in the eye as it draws ever closer. All the different effects work together to make players really start sweating when the third day rolls around. Basic gameplay is identical to that in Ocarina of Time, but there have been some major changes in the way the game is played. Ocarina was, for the most part, based on conflict. Link had to fight scores of monsters and solve the mysteries of nine dungeons. Majora's Mask asks the player to focus more on helpfulness. There are still battles to be fought, but there are only four dungeons this time around. Most problems are found in the lives of individuals in the world, and solutions are often reached without drawing a blade. The Bombers, a boys club, give Link a notebook that he can use to keep track of the plights of people. There are a huge number of people whose lives are lacking, and it is up to Link to put things right by doing the right things at the right times. The reward for helping people is often a piece of heart or a mask. Masks are, of course, a major part of the game. There are masks that can turn Link into a Deku Scrub, Goron, or Zora. But there are also twenty other different masks that bring lesser changes onto Link. Certain masks allow Link to run faster, blow up, learn a dance, and many other abilities. The masks are an interesting new way to present the "scavenger hunt" that Rare has earned considerable notoriety for. The concept is made fresh because most of the abilities the masks give Link are pretty cool. Only a handful of masks are required to progress through the game, but the masks serve as a nice incentive to get players to go on the sub-quests. If players collect all of the masks in the game, they can get access to the coolest mask of all for them to use in the final battle... Overall, Majora's Mask impressed me. It drew me into the world of Clock Town unlike any game I've played before, including Ocarina. This could be the last truly legendary title for the Nintendo 64, and N64 owners would be doing themselves a disservice by not picking it up.

          Zelda:Majoras Mask carries on the now famed "Legend of Zelda". The series has been produced on the SNES, Gameboy and N64 and on all 3 formats the game has been among the greatest of all time. But now with the newest instalment arriving I wanted to find out whether Z:MM could carry on this fine piece of gaming work. Well, you'll be dam pleased to know that it does! The basic plot behind Majoras Mask is that Link has Epona kidnapped by a strange and mysterious man, well actually it's Skull Kid.( Oh come on you must have known!) Aswell as nicking his horse Skull Kid also takes the Ocarina. Links most prized possession. Link then follows the stranger into a parallel universe where, rather unfortunately, the moon is about to crash into the earth. Oh dear. So, naturally, Link jumps in to save the day. Hopefully. The storyline is portrayed in a glorious cut scene which has to be scene to be believed. The first part of the game is basically a training session where you have to turn Link back to his normal form, instead of the Deku Scrub which the Skull Kid has turned you into. My Forrest reaction when I saw this cut scene was this, "Is Link on LSD or am I?" it was just so damn spectacular. After you've had the Deku Mask removed by the Happy Mask Man he asks you to get back an item of his that was stolen as he was walking through Termina Field. Yup, you got it, Majoras Mask. Now that Skull Kid has the mask his is running around wreaking havoc and generally acting like a bad a**. You take control of Link and must guide him around the world that he has entered. There are 4 territories surrounding Clock Town (where all the action is happening) and defeat all the nasty creatures that lurk inside. The 4 territories are as follows, Water, Swamp, Forest and Mountain. Now the next thing about this game is the importance of the masks. In Z:OOT the masks were really only there to laugh at or to make Link look prettier. But now there are an astonishing 20 masks to get your little elfy hands on. You start off with just one. Well sort of. The Mask Seller heals you and removes the deku curse from you resulting in a Deku Mask. When you put on a mask in Majoras Mask whatever the mask symbolises is what special powers Link inherits when he dons the mask. for example when Link puts on the Goron mask he is transformed into a rather large and brutal looking Goron. He now has the ability to smash rocks with his huge punches and curl up into a ball and roll very fast down hills. The Zora mask is a great mask as when you put it on you are effectively an amphibian. There are several other masks that you don't really need. Like the explosion mask for instance. When you put it on all you do is explode! Funny but on the whole useless. As I've said when you don a mask a transformation happens. This is shown in a magical and, quite frankly, rather disturbing cut scene. The scream of torment that Link lets out as the mask grafts itself to his face is blood curdling. On the graphical side of things Nintendo have defiantly set a standard. All the visuals are crisp and captivating. Although you would hope so as the game requires a 4 megabyte expansion pak to run! Don't let this put you off though because this is a truly wonderful, groundbreaking, piece of mastery. If you are looking for a game of ANY kind to splash your money out on, make it this one as you will certainly not regret it

            This game is just like the first one with a few aded extras like charectars and completely better grafics. the game is quite confushing but it is quite addictive. it has much harder levels than the first one and its takes a while to load. i would recomend this to people that enjoyed rpg games if dont like them then no way should you buy this. well they call this game the best on the n64 but it is noway that can be true because mario tennis is much better

              I fell instantly in love with the smash hit Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of time, and I couldn’t stop playing it, It was brilliant. Then I heard about the Majora's mask, I couldn’t believe that the makers were going to try and make a game that was better than the first one. Was the possible? I have to be honest I thought not. I mean the first game was perfect wasn’t it. Anyway I couldn’t find a fault with it. I bought it the Zelda: Majora’s Mask it immediately and started playing straight away I was not disappointed. The story line was great, even if it was a little weird, well not that weird. Well has there even been a Zelda game were the story made any sense? It is generally the same game engine as in Ocarina of Time so it is pretty similar, and even though link can do no more moves than he could on Ocarina of time, they just look a while lot better. And the whole world of Zelda has been generally improved from the graphics to the sound. ~~~~The story~~~~ With his final battle with Ganon and defeating him, and the land of Hyrule safe again. Link left the land of Hyrule and went in search of his great friend, Navi the fairy. He set of through the lost woods. He traveled far and wide in his search. He was traveling through the forest one day when a strange boy, the skullkid, who then stole horse and his precious ocarina. Link like the young warrior that he is set off in chase of the strange fellow. He chased him through a door (in the middle of the forest!). He found himself in another dimension. He then traveled to the nearest town were he was met by a mask salesman, who told him that the mask that young boy was wearing has the power to destroy the earth. As well as that he is told that unless the mask is returned to the salesman then the moon will fall into the earth in 3 days. Link must travel around the world and collect different masks to help him on his way. You ha ve 72 hours to save world......... Not that strange for a Zelda game I suppose! This game has a very impressive point. It is real time (I think) One hour in the game is one minute in real time. This means you have 72 minutes to save the world. But not really. With the help of your trusty ocarina (which you soon get back) you can travel back in time to the first morning of the 3 days. This is the only time you can save during the game as well which is annoying at time. One BIG disappointment compared to Ocarina of time is that there are only 5 main dungeons, compared to the 8. This means that game is short (er) than Ocarina of Time. As on Ocarina of time there are a LOT of sub games were you could get heart pieces, bonus items and all sort of stuff. Or more importantly to get the 20 masks through out the game. You don't actually need them all but to completely complete the game you do. As if you get them all you can then get the fierce deity mask, which makes the final boss much easier. Overall, Majora’s Mask is similar to Ocarina of Time, as the same games engine is used, but everything has been made better. Mainly the graphics and the Gameplay they are the most noticably differences. But also the amount of sub games and items to collect, mainly because of the quests to find the all-20 masks. The only and biggest disappointment is the size of the game. It is considerably short than the first, and is not one of them game you can play over and over again, like you could with the first one. Also compared to the first the ending is a little disappointing. But it is good enough considering the game on a whole.

                Zelda:Majora's Mask, The best game ever on the N64! It's the best game you are ever goig to find on the N64 if you're looking for an RPG. The gameplay is excellent the graphics are mostly good and link looks even better than ever before. The whole world of Termina is waiting for the purpose only to be explored and all the puzzles solved. The new idea it has been given in a game is that it is set over a three day timespan. During those three days all sorts of events will happen, people to help, problems to solve and places that only open at certain times on certain days. And if you miss an event, play the song of time and you'll begin back on the first day with another chance to catch the event. More masks to find, less temples to play through, but more sub-quests and heart pieces to be found than in link's last adventure. I would say more but that would ruin it for you. So go and buy it to see for your self!

                Don't get me wrong here - I love video games, and have loved every Zelda game that they have produced. I have completed 100% of every Zelda game that has been produced, but I am starting to see the series become a little uncreative. This game is pretty amazing, with an original plot, and it wisely makes use of all of the characters from the original N64 game, but changing them around. This is not the problem. The main problem is that it is almost starting to parody itself without meaning too - each new Zelda game has you looking for magic mushrooms, or getting a super sword, etc. This means that I completed half of the puzzles in this game without even needing to think, because I "know" how a Zelda game works and thus usually the most complicated, hardest place to go is the way to complete a puzzle. The problem seems to be that apart from the time aspect of Majoras Mask, nothing extra seems to be going into the new game. Each Zelda has its "parallel world" twist, whether that be jumping back and forth in time (both N64 games), or back and forth to the golden world (SNES). I was quite disappointed with the gameplay when it came to fighting for instance. The z-targeting could have been to so much more effect - remember all of those arcade fighters such as Soul Edge and Tekken etc? The enemies could be limited to only attacking one at a time if the z-targeting meant a real fight. Also, each enemy becomes a little cliched, each and every "end of all" guy being indestructibe apart from the "secret weak spot". Majoras Mask is fun and playable, as well as being damn difficult sometimes (althought mostly because of difficult camera angles). Also, hello, plotline? It seems like the whole Hyrule World needs to be completely expanded to allow many more different types of people into the world - to be honest each game feels really artificial. I mean, it could be easy if each game we play we are only allowed to see a small part of what is really a very much larger world, but we are actually told each time that the maps encompass an entire world! Even though I have only talked generally about Zelda games mostly in this opinion, I should really talk a little about this game more. This game is really great. The mask aspect of it does does add a lot to the gameplay, I sepnt the first couple of weeks of play just running around chatting to all of the folks, in all the different combinations of masks (some of the responses are v cool). The castles are better in this one than the previous one because they are shorter, but don't let that make you think less difficult! I have to say I spent a lot longer on the original games on the NES than on these new ones... by winning hundreds of items each time you enter a dungeon, there was no real reason to have money in this game, or magic - as the infinate magic trick was quick to produce as much as you'd ever want. Also, with the Blast Mask, you never had to have bombs... there are lots of things I don't like, but hey, I didn't make it. I would recommend this game to anyone, with a warning to Zelda fans... wait till the GameCube Zelda comes out, and wait with baited breath...
