      Very helpful

      Very early blues from Georgia

Peg Leg Howell was a farm hand that had to take up playing music on street corners on a full time basis when he lost one of his legs having been shot, Peg Leg's base was to be Atlanta, where he formed a musical gang consisting of Henry Williams and Eddie Anthony.

A talented guitar picker and slide guitar player, he pre-dated the majority of recorded black Piedmont musicians, his vocals contain the character you would expect from a poor blues artist, who struggled to make ends meet in a life of music and crime. Like a lot of blues artists of the era, the raw sound really seems to bring out the meanings of the lyrics which often have a bit of a comical side to them.

It's not clear to me if this album was Volume 2 of tracks by Peg Leg and Eddie Anthony or Volume 2 of songs released by Document Records but chronologically it's possible that it could be the former as the first known Peg Leg recordings are around 1926 by Columbia Records following a stint in prison for bootlegging, a career which would entice him back later on in life. As a slide guitarist Peg Leg really is ahead of his time, this band of three really manage to rock out some tasty little tunes and bring tracks like "

This album is a little bit special because it gives listeners the chance to hear some fiddle playing of the era and region, fiddlers didn't get much of a look in at a time where blues guitarists were being recorded here, there and everywhere.
