      Rahman's national award winning album

Lagaan- India's official entry to oscars for the year 2001 had music by the maestro A.R.Rahman. A film set in the 19th century in an indian village, only Rahman could have provided music for such a film.

'Ghanan Ghanan' is a song of joy and hope of the villagers who are happy to see some clouds which would hopefully bring some rain to the village which lives on agriculture. Rahman assigns a huge team of acclaimed singers and the song is an epic achievement since Rahman lights up such a situation with a lively composition.

Sukhwinder Singh and Udit Narayan teams up for 'Mitwa'- a song which brings in the rustic folk touch. Both the singers are fantastic and the lyrics by Javed Akhtar are inspiring. The songs are not only great audiowise but also aids in narrating the story. Kudos to Rahman for using rare instruments to make this musical piece, its a treat!

The album gets into a rather playful mood with "Radha Kaise Na Jaley" with Udit Narayan and legendary Lata Mangeshkar behind the mike. I love the way both singers complement each other here and the lyrics adds up to the fun here.

My favorite track of the album 'O Re Chori' is the only love ballad in the album. Udit Narayan,Alka Yagnik and Vashundara Das are all at their best and this is one of the best romantic tracks of the decade. The lyrics are true to the story and belong to the rural setting. Watch out for the transition when the song changes from hindi to english and the composition transcends into western from classical indian-that is proof of a genius! Get ready to fall in love!

'Chale Chalo' is a motivational song with strong lyrics. Rahman includes hmself as one of the many singers for this song which will add a lot of fire to the narration of the film.

Time for some english influences since the film belongs to an era when the english used to rule India? 'Waltz for a romance' is an instrumental piece set in a ballad room dance setting. Rahman's grasp of such varied genres will leave you spellbound!

From a ballad instrumental to a soft song sung by the best singer alive,Lata Mangeshkar arrives with 'O Paalan Haare'. Lata is astounding once again with her silky vocals weaving magic on such a simplistic composition. This will put you to sleep with its peaceful aura.

'Lagaan theme' ends the album on a high. This instrumental has to be one of the best instrumentals in indian films,a piece that has an emotional graph, from quiet to anger, then to love and beyond. Get ready to be blown away by this instrumental!

This album gave Rahman the much coveted national award which is a huge achievement in itself. This is an album everyone should have, much like the film itself!
