      A good effort

Mel B aka Scary Spice released her debut album 'Hot' way back in 2000. Known for being the mouthy northerner in the band it would at the time be very interesting to see whether we could cope with a full studio album by the singer. 'Hot' consists of 11 tracks, and she is very much the R&B/Pop sounding record that you would expect from Scary. She became the first Spice Girl to have a solo number 1 single with 'I Want You Back' which features Missy Elliot, although music-wise she has not had a very long career, with only 2 studio albums under her belt (2007's 'LA State of Mind').

      Track by Track Review;

'Feels So Good' - Sassy, confident and infectious. This is a great album opener. Got a very current (at the time) beat to it and has that urban edge to it that made it the perfect third single from the album. 9/10

'Tell Me' - This was the official lead single to the album (I Want You Back was released almost 18 months prior to the album release so it isn't really considered the lead single). This follow ons from 'Feel So Good' and has the same kind of pop/r&b confident vibe. It seems that this song is about on of Mel's ex boyfriends who is seemingly on around because all he wanted was her money. Ouch! 8/10.

'Hell No' - A more of a mellow, slower jam here. It's no way as near poppy as the first two songs. It tries to be sexy and sultry but for me it's is quite a weak song. Not one i'm desperate to hear again. 4/10.

'Lullabye' - A fresh pop song here. Lullabye is all about her daugher Phoenix Chi. It's a nice breezy summery pop song. Was the final single from the album. 9/10.

'Hotter' - The stand out track on the album. Mixes R&B with pop perfectly. Very surprised that she didn't release this as a single and I know many people who bought the album rated this the best song on it. Again, has a summery pop/r&B vibe, what a wasted album track. 10/10.

'Step Inside' - Plain and simple R&B twaddle now. Not really the best song on the abum. It does have a peak just before the chorus, but i'm afraid it is the chorus that lets it down. 7/10.

'ABC 123' - Simmilar vibe to 'Hell No' but a bit more catchy. Tries so hard to be sexy on this song and I do like it. I think she hit the nail on the head with this song. I reckon this could have been big in America 8/10.

'I Believe' - Hmmm, this is more pop and less R&B than the other songs on the album. It's a bit of an album filler but harmless enough. Some parts of the song are annoying though (that stupid noise after she sings 'I believe in my babyyyyy'). 7/10.

'I Want You Back' - Her first single. Reached #1 in the charts. Very current at the time and I wasn't impressed when I heard it. I mean, how can a Spice Girl go from releasing really poppy tunes to launching their solo career with this. In time, though I've learned to like it and I believe this song was very ahead of its time. 9/10.

'Pack Your S**t' - Dreary, boring, mundane. I really don't like this song. Melanie can't seem to do these 'mellow' songs very well. 5/10.

'Feel Me Now' - And we end the album on another dreary song. See the last description. 5/10.

Overall, it's quite a solid album, but the slower songs let it down. I much prefer her follow up album 'LA State of Mind' which BOMBED in the UK, but it was much better. Unfortunately I can't review it on here though as it's not listed.

      A fantastic debut

I paid just 39p for this album off Amazon.co.uk. They messed up the price so I got a bargain. It was brand new aswell!!!

The album includes her hook up with Missy Elliot, I Want You Back, which was a number one single for Melanie a few years ago. The track is very RnB inspired with Missy appearing on it and it was Mel's way of getting back at an ex of hers. I think the title was supposed to be ironic.

The album as a whole is more RnB than pop, although Mel doesn't sway too far from her Spice Girls roots. Most of the tracks are upbeat, however Mel does the odd ballad without coming across as cheesy or sickly. Mel never had the strongest voice in the Spice Girls but she CAN belt out a tune. I was very impressed with this album as it is really catchy and the songs all make an impact. They're all strong tracks, most of them could have been released as a single.

The album explores many different themes and flavours. Some tracks come across as feisty whilst some come across as soft. I guess Melanie had many different feelings when recording this album!

I would recommend this album. It's a great CD that you can play at parties, at gatherings or simply in the car.

      Not a bad debut.

        sufficient

I felt I had to review this, as she was always one of my preferred Spice Girls. Mel had guts and determination and always looked like she was having a good time, my kind of lady. This was her only album and spurned a few hits.

        Who is she:

One fifth of Spice Girls and occasional actress.

        On this album:

'Feels So Good' was a wise choice as the starter song, it is upbeat, summery and has a chorus which Janet Jackson would be proud of. Mel's vocals are adequate on this, though she seems to speak the verses rather than sing them. 'I Want You Back' was a brassy duet with Missy Elliot. Missy added some much needed clout and gave the track a dirty edge. It is the closest Melanie came to sounding cutting edge. 'Tell Me' is a feisty pop workout, which shows her in fine form, catchy and dancey, it is one of the stronger songs.

Mel proves she can do slow too, the lovely 'Lullaby' will make you smile and think of having babies. It is rather soppy but sung elegently.

Wosrt track: 'Pack Your S***' is an attempt to sound mean and tough, but we know deep down she isn't, so this isn't convincing from a girl who sang 'Mamma we love you, mamma we care'.

Overall: It ain't great, but it's a good showcase of what she is capable of when on her own.

When I knew that Melanie B aka Scary Spice, from the Spice Girls, made an album, I immediately bought it. It's called "Hot" and it's the first album of Scary Spice. It's a mix of r&b and pop sounds. Very very cool!!! There are only 11 tracks, all very good and danceable, like Destiny's Child, Tlc sounds. 1. Feels So Good = It is a good song, it makes me dance. It is the 2nd single off the album. I love listening to it when I'm sad. It makes me happy. Very good Melanie!! 9/10 2. Tell Me = It is the first single off the album. It's a very R&B song, with good lyrics and sounds. It's written about her ex-husband, Jimmy G. and it's a powerful song... good Melanie! I love when she sings "And all you loved was Mel B's money" Good! 9/10 3. Hell No = It's a love song. Very slow and I love Melanie's vocals and lyrics. It isn't a potential single, but I like it!!! 7/10 4. Lullaby = It's the third single off the album. It's a sweet and depth song, written about Melanie's daughter, Phoenix Chi. I love it, I think it's one of the best songs of the album. 10/10 5. Hotter = It's an R&B song very beautiful and danceable. It isn't the best but I like it. Go Mel, Go! 7/10 6. Step Inside = An R&B song, with good lyrics and beautiful sounds. It makes me dance! Very cool! Isnt she just excellent?!? I had my doubts about what her solo album would sound like but it turns out that the album in my opinion is great. Well that is all of it except the last track on the album called Feel Me Now... im afraid this track actually lets down the album as a whole. My favourite track is the first track called Feels So Good which was released as her second single, you may have heard it if you have i would love to hear your opinion on the track! Her next single is going to be the fourth track on the album called Lullaby, which in my opinion is about her baby Phoenix Chi. Its slower than the previous two singles and apparently she will be doing a lot of live performances of the single, i cant wait for her to prove to the world that she actually can sing and its such a lovely song as well...what a bonus! Well for all those that have not got the album i would recommend that you purchase it, it really gets you dancing around the room!

Mel B'S style of music came as a surprise to me, but a pleasant one. if i had been given this five years ago when i bought the first spice girls album, spice, i wouldn't have liked it. but this album is more mature than spice/spiceworld and aimed at a slightly higher age than the first two spice girls albums. here is my opinion of the 11 great tracks: 1 - feels so good - a really happy party song that creates the false impression that mel b has stayed with the pop of the spice girls 2 albums 5/5 2 - tell me - 'having a go' at her ex-husband in this steady r&b top 5 single 5/5 3- hell no - its hard to Categorise this song, it doesnt really have a climax, but its well written. i think the music lets it down 4/5 4 - lullaby - a 'pretty poppy' ballad written for her daughter. 5/5 5- hotter - this track was co written with sisqo and you can hear his 'presence' on this track. godd rap in the first verse from melanie 5/5 6 - step inside - again this is well written but the music lets it down. the rising notes on the ends of the lines doesnt do justice for the lyrics 3/5 7 - abc123 - its slightly repetitive with the chorus, but overall its a good song 4/5 8 - i believe - this song grew on me. it has a very strange voice doing the backing vocals! 5/5 9 - i want you back - one of my favourites, the number 1 with missy elliot.5/5 10 - pack your shit - this was a surprise!! a spice girl using the f word multiple times on an album!! after the initial shock(!) this is quite a good song 5/5 11 - feel me now - im liking this song a little more by the day, but its still my least favourite on the album. it was apparently recorded with melanie laying on the floor, but i think its a bit too slow, and doesn't fit with the rest of the album.3/5 overall this album is very very good, a must for all music collections.

Mel B aka Scary Spice has always been in my opinion the most interesting Spice Girl. I think that wild exterior is just an act; very few people get to know the real Melanie Brown. When I heard her first single away from the group I wasn’t disappointed! The Missy Elliott collaboration 'I Want You Back' was a cool, slinky number with a great video to go with the staccato beats and sultry lyrics; it was just a great single. ‘Hot’ is unashamedly an R&B/Pop album, sounding very similar to the likes of Destiny’s Child, Alliyah, TLC and all of those other great American R&B/Pop acts. Well when considering the people which Scary collaborated with on ‘Hot’ it’s not surprising really; Fred Jerkings, Sisqo, Teddy Riley and Jam Lewis all had an input. 'Hot' features the Missy Elliott collaboration 'I Want You Back' as well as many other great songs. Here is my review of the album track by track: 1. Feels So Good – This is probably the most poppy song on the whole album, it’s a song to dance to, and when you listen to it you feel good! Feels so good is original, different and very catchy. 2. Tell Me - This is much more of a R&B influenced tune, mainly derived from that modern sound that artists like Pink have 3. Hell No – Things slow down for Hell No, the song's from a girl's point of view, about sadness, being left and ditched! 4. Lullaby – This is an upbeat, beautiful and very catchy song about Mel’s daughter Phoenix Chi 5. Hotter – This is a very R&B song about a girl saying she doesn't care if you've got money or style or class, cos’ it's more about the person inside. Sounds similar to Sisqo’s Thong song! (This is the track Sisqo worked on) 6. Step Inside – This song was co-written by Max Beasley who is currently Melanie’s Boyfriend, with a slow start that dramatises the song as it’s base b
eats kick in and the song becomes a lot faster. 7. ABC 123 – This wasn’t a copy of the Jackson’s hit! It just has the same title as you hear the fast beats, they clearly state this is an R&B song. This shows that Mel is a serious R&B artist. 8. I Believe – This is a R&B come pop mixed together which works well. This song shows Melanie’s outstanding vocals and her range of octaves. I Believe this is the most cheerful song on the album together with Feels So Good. 9. I Want You Back – Melanie’s first single away from the Spice Girls which took her again to number 1. With the help of Missy ‘Misdemeanour’ Elloitt this song is a slinky number with a great video to go with the staccato beats and sultry lyrics what a great song! 10. Pack Your S**t – This is the most daring song from any of the Spice Girls solo projects, which really gives Melanie’s nickname back – Scary Spice. The song contains explicit lyrics ‘You said your hup’d up but you never F**k up’ but yet another excellent song with a little help from R Kelly sound a like Eric Williams. 11. Feel Me Now – Melanie ends her album with a very soft and sexy number. Not the best on her album but still very catchy Even though this album performed poorly in the charts overall this album is fantastic. The production quality is excellent. Melanie’s vocals have really matured. With Mel’s new HOT look on the cover this album puts Geri’s to shame. With the success of ‘I want you back’ and ‘Tell Me’ hopefully Melanie can follow it up with ‘Feel So Good’ out on the 19th February 2001. My advice: - GO BUY IT
