I am a big fan of the Lewis Carroll book and I have seen many poor attempts at trying to recreate the magical story on both the big and small screens. In my opinion this is the only good rendition of the book!
The film has an A list cast with Whoopi Goldberg as the Cheshire cat and also Robbie Coltrane, Ken Dodd and the wonderful Liz Smith as other characters from the book played perfectly on the screen. This TV-movie also features Miranda Richardson as the Queen of Hearts and Martin Short as the boisterous, witty Mad Hatter (unlike Tim Burton's dark creepy monstrosity!)
The film is a definite watch for people of all ages (I first watched this film as a child and still find it amazing 13years later!) and is almost guaranteed to make you laugh and sing along to all the catchy songs.
The film certainly isn't a short one and it definitely didn't have a big budget like some more recent attempts have, but it does stay true to the book pretty much exactly throughout which is a positive no matter how you look at it! And with a cast of recognisable faces performing superbly, you will be glued to the TV screen for the entire 2 and a half hours of magic!
*Also, for the record... This is on sale practically everywhere for less than a fiver! Well worth the money, you will NOT be disappointed.*
There is a quaint timelessness about this version of Alice. It doesn't rely on celebrity cameos and special effects, as the latest one does. In a few decades, the Tim Burton version just won't be particularly relevant, because the special effects will have dated and the actors won't be as recognisable, but this version is timeless. It doesn't try to impress you, it tries to tell the oddly endearing story of Alice in Wonderland.
Also, while the Disney one is beautifully animated, this Alice holds a dear place in my heart because of the fantastic accuracy that comes with it. It certainly didn't have the biggest budget, but the love and care that has gone into making this version as detailed as possible is just wonderful.
This is the version I will show to my children, before any other. The actors clearly all hold the same fondness for the roles that they're playing. Right now (today: 23/01/2010) this is on sale in amazon for £2.99, with free delivery, which is just the most fantastic bargain for something that will entertain all ages. A good Christmas film for the family, in my opinion!
However, for a gift, I would say that it is probably one for the fans of the books, or for those that just aren't impressed with recent flashy cinema. This is a story that takes it's time to unfold, and standing at 129 minutes long, it's not a short film. A good Christmas film for the family to sit down and enjoy, in my opinion!
If you are a fan of alice in wonderland generally or Lewis Carroll you have to watch this film, its fantastic.
This is not a cartoon, but a actor based film and each and every character is full of life and represents each one in alice perfectly. The music throughout is beautiful, humorous and any musical lover will enjoy listening to the songs and singing along.
Fantastic storyline and re directed to mirror the book as much as possible which is always a good bonus for film directors, a collation of different aspects make the film magical and throws you back into childhood which is why its such a fantastic film to watch as an adult or a child.
If you havent bought this for your child yet, do so they will love it and its a good couple of hours worth of entertainment, as well as something they can relate to afterwards with the book. I have watched this film over and over again and never fail to bore of it, its fabulous for artists also as the dimensions of acting, script and theatrical architecture throughout is quite astounding.
