I've been riding one of these for the last year and a half after trading in my 94' ZXR750.
In all honesty, for a V-Twin, i thought there would be more arm wrenching grunt, but it's a very civilized and nice machine to ride. The power output is very linear and very easy to get used to.
It can keep up with anything on the road, but their is just no particular fun factor to the machine for me.
The engine is really easy to service plugs, oil and electrics. I also put some sports exhausts on, which made a little difference, and were quite easy to install as well.
The tank range is frankly quite bad 19litres in the 97' model only being extended after 2000.
On a motorway run, the fuel light will come on after about 80 miles of general riding, and start spluttering at about 95.
The seat height will be an issue for anyone under about 5' 4" ish. That how tall i am, and i have to lean slightly to get a good foot down.
It's quite comfortable. An inbetween seated position, not too sporty. The pillion seat might be a bit to small for people who are used to a comfortable touring seat, but it suffices. No grab rail on the back which might not suit some people as well.
I feel like this is a bike for commuting, but good enough for a weekend blast with the lads. I would prefer something nippier though.
After owning various much smaller and older sports bikes (GPZ600R,TZR250 et al) I found the Firestorm something of a different animal to begin with. A first ride indicated the power delivery is very linear which I suppose some would regard as unexciting, it also runs out of puff at around 9000rpm. These characteristics don't exactly make it sound like the most interesting bike out there but in fact the bike is brilliant for the road. Overtaking is a sublime experience as the phenomenal grunt allows overtaking in most gears that would not be possible on another bike with the same sort of power (Yamaha R6 or Kawasaki ZX6R), on numerous occasions I have embarassed "More sporty" four cylinder bikes (including an R1 and a ZX9R) powering out of turns, where selecting the wrong gear out of a roundabout or turn on another machine would be an embarrassing experience, on the Firestorm you can get away with it. Sure the tank range is rubbish and the water pump could do with a mod, but on the whole this bike is great, Honda build quality and deceptively fast performance. Can get a bit flighty at very high speeds though (140mph+)
I rode the Storm soon after getting my first Blade in 99. Did about 30 miles on it. It has really reinforced my decision the get the Blade. Maybe it’s not fair comparing the Storm to the Blade well it did. The storm 1000cc V Twin half faired sporty bike. Not really a Super sports but not really a Sports tourer either. The Engine was nice but it ran out of revs early 9K and if drooped below 3K it was real lumpy. The brakes not a pack on the blade and the suspension the same. All the same it is a comfy budget twin who many swear by. So to sum up Don’t expect sport bikes performance but it can hustle with the best on the road. Only the really committed sports bike riders will loss you on the Road. Good Budget Twin great for commuting!
I've had one of these bikes for 2 years now, I love it. It is light and perfectly balanced, it is easy to ride and comfortable. Yeah ok it will not keep up with some of the other sports bikes, but unles you take it on the track how are you tell. The Vee Twin makes it very forgiving. It feels like a much smaller lighter bike, but still has a throbbing lump to get the juices flowing. And talking of flowing juices, the tank has a pathetic range, which is the only downside. People say it is bland, but if reliable and predictable are bland, then is this kind of blandness a bad thing.
