The Sony SmartWatch looks fantastic and overall is very eye-catching in terms of appearance. It has a range of features to keep even the most technological of people entertained and it certainly makes the plain old watch much more desirable and gives it a much needed image revamp. However, on a practical basis it does appear to fall flat on its (clock)face at times. The main issue is the connection issue, as the watch cannot even tell you the time without android connectivity. In principal, what this means is you would have to buy the watch to match your phone or tablet device. This may not seem like a massive problem to some, but to me it seems a little over the top. When I buy a watch I buy it based on its looks, its features but most importantly; its functionality as a watch. I really don't want to consider whether my watch is compatible with my phone. That goes hand in hand with the next problem. The android owners who have read the previous paragraph will be disappointed to know that the watch does not live up to its statement of being 'Universally Android Compatible'. In fact the watch is now only compatible with 'few select android handsets'. This obviously, is a huge drawback for anybody thinking of purchasing the SmartWatch as it appears to be simply an accessory for Sony products. This is something I found out first hand as I purchased it safe in the knowledge that it would work with my current android tablet; unfortunately this was not the case. The problem with the SmartWatch is that in essence all you will be buying is a very posh remote control for your current compatible android devices. Which is useful in certain situations, of course? Say, during a meeting or a face to face with the boss, when any phone call would be inappropriate, No problem. The SmartWatch has an App that will show you the caller's details, send them to voicemail and send them a polite message to inform them you are busy. You can also keep up to date with your social networking requirements by browsing Facebook, Twitter and the like. This, I think really sums up my issues with the SmartWatch. All the previously mentioned features, more than likely already exist on your actual SmartPhone. So all you are getting really is an extra screen for your current device. Which, again is useful for certain situations or privacy reasons but the question I keep asking myself is; 'Is it really necessary?' Don't get me wrong, it is a cool gadget and apart from the connectivity and compatibility issue, it does do what it sets out to do and is a cool little addition to the android family. It will definitely please the gadget lovers and accessory enthusiasts. However, the everyday shopper will probably give it a miss. All the negative stuff aside though, I can report that once I finally managed to get the SmartWatch set up and working, I can honestly say that I found no problems with the device from a technological standpoint. All Apps worked fine for me with no crashing or laboured performance. It was easy to sync up with my compatible devices and it was all in all a pretty nifty little gizmo that did brighten up my android use. In conclusion, I find the SmartWatch to be a pretty fun device but I feel it lacks too much in the compatibility department to be really worth the outlay. I gadgets are your thing then this is definitely a nice addition. If you are looking for a practical watch then maybe this is not for you.
