A few years ago, when I got a new mobile phone, my partner presented me with a lovely gift. It was a clear plastic box measuring (W) 44.5cm, (H) 31.5cm, (D) 31.5cm and within it was a fluffy spider. It took me a while to work out what it was but eventually I realised (after reading the box) that it was a phone and/or gadget holder by a company called Aroma Home. I took it out of the package (very easy to remove) and placed it on the table where it sat, unmoving. I thanked her, of course I thanked her profusely, but honestly, I wasn't really all that impressed. My phone always just sat flat on the desk when I was working. What difference would it make if I put it in this spider? There wasn't even a hole in it through which to thread a charge cable.
It's a light blue padded cloth pot (that's where you put your gadget) covered in lots of foamy 'hairs' (each about half a centimetre thick and two cm long). Then there's a soft blue ball for a head stuck on the front of the pot, and this bit really is soft, like a sleepy donkey's nose. There are a couple of smaller white balls stuck onto this head-ball to represent eyes. They look in completely opposite directions from each other. It has a slit mouth and a couple of triangular fangs stitched onto the head and finally there are eight feet attached to the bottom of the pot. They're just simple flat pieces of black felt like you'd see in a Blue Peter kind of craft job. It looks, frankly, utterly rubbish. You can't even wash it properly, only sponge clean it. I suspect it would fall apart if you put it in the washing machine.
I took it to work and put it on my desk because it was a lovely gift from my partner. I put my phone in it once or twice so that I could tell her I'd been using it, fully expecting it to make its way to the bottom of a drawer in a week or so.
But you know what? I kept on using it. Every day when I plopped my phone into it I smiled when I saw the stupid googly Kermit the Frog-style eyes that look like they've been drawn on by a three year old. I kept stroking its oh-so-soft nose or running my fingers through those ridiculous hairs that look more like hedgehog spines than anything a spider might have - even a pastel blue one. In short, I've grown to love it.
I've changed mobiles and offices a few times since then but wherever I've been my phone has spent its day housed in this daft blue spider. It doesn't take up any space, doesn't have any use and isn't detrimental to my working environment at all. But it's where my phone lives every working day.
Is it necessary? Not in any way, shape or form. And it's not cheap at around £9 (July 2013).
Is it cute and fun? Oh yes! My desk wouldn't be the same without it now.
I recently got myself a new phone on an upgrade and for the first time I chose quite an expensive phone so wanted to protect it at all times. When I was out shopping with my daughter we were in Debenhams and she picked up a cute little plush bug and was asking if I would buy it her. Looking more closely at the toy I realised it wasn't actually a childs toy, it was a gadget holder. I decided to treat myself to it as it was so cute and also would protect my phone at home.
The Aroma Home mobile phone and gadget holder is a cute little purple butterfly and comes boxed in a clear plastic packaging with a slot in the front of the box so you can touch the butterfly and feel how soft it is. On the side of the box it is stated that the aroma home mobile phone and gadget holder is "a fun way to keep track and securely hold your much loved mobile phone or gadget such as iphone, blackberry, ipod or mp3 player".
Opening the packaging to get the butterfly out was easily done as I thought that I would have to cut it open as is often required with this type of packaging. However, in this case there are two flaps at the bottom which simply pop open and the sides of the box lift up so you can pull the butterfly out.
The butterfly phone holder is one that you can use either at home or in the car, however I haven't used it in the car as I fail to see how it could sit anywhere in my car without slipping and falling so I have decided to use this in the house only. Though saying that if I can find a place in the car to keep one safe I will buy another as they are just so cute! The butterfly is really just too cute and are fuzzy little things just like the slippers that come in various animal designs. It has a super cute smiley face and is in a lying down position though I have to say it does have a look of a pink ladybird rather than a butterfly as there are no obvious wings on it.
On the butterfly's back you will find the large hole in which your mobile phone (or gadget) is to be placed. I have a Blackberry Torch and the size is absolutely perfect for that phone as it sits nice and snug with no gaps so the risk of it slipping or tipping over is minimised. When my phone is sat in the holder, it is deep enough to cover just over half of the phone so it is instantly visible should I get a call or message through.
I love my new mobile phone holder, it is really cute and keeps my phone completely safe and secure. I think this butterfly holder would suit literally any phone as I have a cover on my phone which makes it quite a bit thicker than normal so it shows the kind of size it will hold. The only drawback I have with the mobile phone holder is that my daughter is drawn to it constantly as it is so cute but that was kind of obvious it would happen so I think I may have to get one for her play mobile and then my phone may be left alone! The only way I think this could be improved is to have a sticky part on the base in order to be able to stick it to the dashboard of the car like some other mobile phone holders have.
There are other designs available - bumble bee, frog, ladybird and spider, all of which are really appealing....even the spider! The price of the phone holder was £8.00 which is a lot more than I would really choose to spend but this was a complete impulse buy and I just couldn't resist! On the Aroma Home website the cost of the phone holder is £8.99 so it is worth popping into Debenhams to get it slightly cheaper. The dimensions of the mobile phone holder are 3.5" x 4" x 6" so you can see it won't take up much room at all.
It is important to note that the butterfly phone holder is sponge clean only and should not be immersed into water.
All in all I would happily recommend the Aroma Home mobile phone and gadget holder because as you can tell from my review I love it! I think this product would also make a nice present for someone as a stocking filler as it does look nice in the packaging also.
Thank you for reading my review
