this is a great present at a Sweet 16 birthday Bash but just not for me

This phone is perfect for teenagers in high school but not for business savvy consumers. For me a smart phone is something I use for business more than pleasure and while this phone has a whole lot of apps it doesn't deliver the things I need for my business.

When I first got it I was excited because the screen was so bright which made it much more visually appealing than my previous phone. But that's about where the excitement stopped. I'm sorry this phone just doesn't compete with the big boys in the mobile world. The camera on it is just flat out terribleand I can't believe a present-day device can even have such a lackluster camera on it. The coloring is all wrong unless you're in a really bright area. But in really bright areas you can't see the display so was pointless.

It may be too touch sensitive also because when walking with it in your pocket all kinds of buttons are being pressed without you trying.

An average phone which does not live up to its name

The Samsung Jet (S8000) is a phone which promises a lot but does not deliver on all aspects. The phone features a 5MP camera, resistive touch screen, various applications and a flashy design. The phone itself is stylish and has a nice curved design which fits nicely in your hand. It features a 800ghz processor which promises to give fast performance and reliability but in reality the processor hardly does its job and the general speed can lag and tweaking the performance is time consuming and should not be left to the user in the first place. Also the device has issues with multi-tasking as it can make you force close multiple screens for no apparent reason.

The camera is of decent quality and most pictures taken during the day are clearly visible and of a reasonably high quality. However photos taken at night are often blurred and the led flash is generally not that great and will not light up the scene. The applications that come with the phone are standard and basic, good for using calculator functions etc. but nothing special. Calling and texting is easy and straightforward and generally the phone manages to achieve good signal.

great phone for the everyday person maybey not good enough for the hi tech minded

Ok. So I actually have had this phone for about six months. I bought it from a friend when she got a new one. I do like this phone but there are a few things I think you might like to know if your thinking of purchasing it for yourself.

If you're intrested here is the tech spec from Samsung.

      Display: PENTILE AMOLED
      Resolution: 3.1 inches (7.9 cm) 16M-color R-Resistive touch screen of 800 × 480 pixel resolution
      Weight: 110 g
      Dimension: 108.9 × 53.5 × 11.9
Battery Talk Time: up to 8.2 hours
      Standby: up to 442 hours
      Connectivity: HSDPA, WIFI and BLUETOOTH
      800 MHz processor
      5MP camera
      3.1-inch touch screen AMOLED display
      a-GPS
      FM radio
2 or 8 GB of internal storage with a micro SD slot slot for an additional 16GB
      Webkit-touting web browser entitled dolphin.

Now that's the specifications for all the hi tech know it alls (one of which am not)

      The look of the phone

My first impressions were: its fantastic and I love everything about it, it looks impressive. It's tough and can handle a drop to the floor, without breaking into 10 parts on impact. It's neither too light nor heavy which can sometimes make a phone feel cheaper. It has a nice feel in the palm of your hand and it weighs 110g. To look at it's a bit different from your average phone. A large touch screen swamps the phones look a bit, but hey, its a touch screen so i don't suppose that really matters. There are three main buttons on the phones interface with a cube shaped middle button inbetween the outer two.

The top of the phone has a very small USB charger and the phones side buttons control the volume, the camera and camera functions and the menu interaction cube (which i will explain later), and an additional button to lock your phone. All these side buttons are small as the phone is very slim. I do think if your fingers are on the larger side it might prove a bit of fiddle. While were on the subject of the look of the phone I will mention, just how good the on screen colour is. It's vibrant, bright and pictures are incredibly clear and crisp. This could be unnoticed on many other phones but it really is good on this s8000

      The phones functions and capability

Ok, as most phones go you can customize lots of different things but the thing that like about this is you can slide between three different home screens on your main screen with a simple swipe of a finger. You can have different options on each one. I suppose this is more relevant to someone who has a busy work and pleasure life. Instead of using them as I do, just to rotate different wallpapers with ease . (simple things please simple minds and all that)

This phone has something called a online widget, it's a collaspable side menu bar you can customize for your personal taste. It's for the online applications such as the weather news and and search engines etc. Again I like to keep it simple, to the things I use most often like alarm, calculator, etc none of which are online. Either way I found useful purpose for this handy side menu.

On the bottom of the display home screen my options are the keypad, to make calls save numbers etc, the address book, messaging and the menu. I don't know if you can change these I haven't tried, they work good for me the way they are. Then the phone has all the usuals settings, call history, organizer, music, games etc.

Another menu this phone has to offer is the cube menu as I refer to it . On the side camera button there is a "double function" button which brings up this cool 3D cube. You can flip and turn to your hearts content (not the point or purpose I know but its still fun) each face of the cube has different menus which you can change. So why is it so good? It's easy accessd side button makes it quick. Once you've selected your chosen face subject, it brings up neat photographic choices . It's kind of like flicking through lots old LPS or or a baby size photo book. God its sounds quite silly (where I'm trying to explain it) it is good I promise. The professionals gave it a posh name its a Dynamic User Interface (DUI). God I love using big words it makes me feel special.

I don't use my phone for online purposes thats why I have a laptop. I have tried it and to be honest everything seems to be laggy and slow, but this might just be how mobiles are in general I don't know . I wont be holding it against my phone. You can open lots of web pages as you surf online if you like to go online thats quite cool though.

The camera its super crisp and takes a really sharp clean pictures and films which is problery one of my top three uses for a mobile. There is a smile recognition function for a perfect photograph, Blink detection function, and a panoramic view function which lets you take a couple of different photos and then links them together to make one panoramic picture.wow. There are lots of others but these are the ones I think are definite worth a mention.

Accessing your pictures is easy and fun you can flip the phone to the landscape angle, tilt it slightly and the phone will slowly show you your shots. Its quirky.

This phone does feature FM radio as well as being able to download music and choose from lots of different categories online i.e. rock indie, pop etc you can search your favorites too, the headphone jack is 3.5mm so most of your personal head phones will fit this which is good for me. This brings me onto my first downfall with this phone I can't seem to be able to listen to the radio with the headset out. I have sat and flicked through the phone countless times but it just doesn't seem capable of it. Which is a shame.

Messaging is easy and has all the usuals and more a so called " QWERTY keypad" I think this when you turn the mobile on its side and it gives you a full keyboard and all its functions I like this best, though I do find my fingers don't work that well (pressing unwanted buttons) I use my daughters DSi stylus pen it works a treat.

Any important things like battery, speed, I've left in the spec because to be honest it all very truth full.

      My verdict

Samsung claim that it's smarter than a smart phone I don't know because I don't know what a smart phone is basically. Though I will say this phone would be pretty intelligent if it were a person. My only worry about this mobile is that after 6 months use I have notice the touch screen doesn't work that well, I will elaborate small icons and options that you sometimes need or want to press are difficult like I mentioned above my daughters dsi pen is handy .I don't know why Samsung made them so small if they didn't include a pen. Its a shame about the radio not working without headphones but I don't want to say thats a definite not working.

So overall I really like my s8000 from Samsung, would recommend it to anyone who has fingers like E.T they'd get on great wouldn't they? The phone has a lot to offer everyone, is got lots of extras, its looks good, feels great, easy to use, has quirky functions, and does what a mobile is supposed to, ....makes a telephone call .

This is why I rate my s8000 as a sophisticated 8/10

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

Don't buy this phone, it's not worth the hassle.

I bought this phone on a 2 year contract for £15 a month with 200 mins and unlimited texts. At the time I thought I had bagged myself a bargain with this stylish new phone, back in April 2010.

The phone is quite stylish, a black touchscreen although it has a tacky plastic back which lets down the look of the phone and I am also still a bit worried about it possibly cracking if I drop it. The screen is 3.1 inches and the display quality is very good. The camera is 5 megapixels which is also very high quality and the flash helps take lovely photos although the reaction time is quite slow. The phone is 3G which is another plus. The inbuilt memory is 2 gigabytes which is impressive and leaves lots of room to store your music and photos.

I find the battery life very poor and it runs out very quickly even on standby. The internet isn't as speedy as it says on the specifications and I find the phone very hard to use because of the bad touchscreen. You have to tap extremely hard for your touch to be registered. I find that this is usually the case with samsung phones but the jet is one of the very extreme cases. It means that messaging is very difficult and even trying to unlock the phone with your touch is a very hard task. The motion sensor can also be very difficult and trying to turn the phone to the side to activate the qwerty keyboard is very hard and takes a good 20 seconds. The ease of use for this phone is awful in my opinion.

The purchase of this phone is not recommended by me despite all the good features it really is let down by the motion sensors and touch registration. The battery life is also poor and you cannot try and help by turning down the brightness because the lowest brightness is still very bright and drains the battery very quickly.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

A good phone for someone not too fussed about the added extras phones carry today!

Back in 2010, around March, the £30 per month contract offer on this phone seemed a good deal. Fast forward to 2011, and this phone really does struggle and it is clear to now see that it is out of its depth.

With the introduction of smartphones, it is very clear to see what this phone lacks; no choice of being able to download any decent apps, the internet connections, despite the advertisements, are fairly slow, and the services it provides are lacking.

Don't get me wrong, it was a good little phone at first; a nice size and weight, phone and has got a good battery life.

However, one area of concern I've had for a while is the texting. Tilting the phone sideways brings up a keyboard like pad, designed for quicker texting. But, and I don't have necessarily big fingers, I always end up pressing the wrong buttons. It makes texting very frustrating and difficult when in a rush.

Also, it is impossible to use in rain. On plenty of occasions, and sudden downpour as hit me when using th phone. The touchscreen is then deemed useless. Everytime this has happened, I have had to turn the phone off, and allow it to dry for around 2 hours! Again, very frustrating.

The internet, on the other hand, is pretty nifty. Fast, but fails to live up to the hype by not been able to show certain pages. Once again, the smartphones out there beat it hands down.

      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Don't buy!

      {~~~Introduction~~~}

On the lookout for my first contract smartphone, I came across the Samsung Jet. At the time, it was stylish, compact and had decent specifications. I went for a 2 year contract, and I regret it now!
      {~~~Packaging~~~}

I got the phone in a square box with the phone neatly tucked inside it at the top. There were booklets, the charger, cables and a CD in the box.

      {~~~First Impression~~~}

My first impression was a good one, I was really happy with how the phone looked and felt, well for the price anyway. The touch-screen worked, but I was disappointed that it required some force.

      {~~~Design & Features~~~}

The phone comes with two cameras, one on the front and one on the back. The front one can only be used for video calls, and the back can be used for videos and photos. The front camera is a low quality VGA type but it is certainly sufficient for video calls. The proper camera placed on the back is 5MP and I was surprised to see that the camera is actually good quality, There is a flash function which works very well.

On the back is a speaker grill towards the bottom composed of two slits. The speaker itself does go loud, but not too loud. This has never caused problems for me as my phone is always on vibrate and I don't listen to music on the phone.

The front of the phone is quite simple, there is a Samsung logo printed on the top in silver, and there is a diamond button at the bottom with a call button on the left hand side and a hang-up/shut down button on the right. These buttons are quite firm and solid, which I like.

The charging port is on the top and is protected by a fiddly cap which is still intact of my phone even though I am usually quite rough with this flap. Next to the charging port on the top is a 3.5mm headphone jack. When you plug anything in it will ask you whether it is headphones or the video-put system you want to use.

      {~~~Battery Life~~~}

I really wasn't too impressed with the battery life, with average usage, the phone was only lasting 1.5 days. I switched off 3G and kept wifi off when not in use and this seemed to help. I also keep my brightness at the minimum setting to prolong batter life.
      {~~~Final thoughts~~~}

I really do not recommend this phone, the software is glitchy, Samsung are hardly supporting this phone and it is pretty much obsolete now. Please spend a bit more and go for something a bit more high-end, think of it as an investment.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Very good non-smart phone

The version of this phone that I bought is actually the S8000 Jet Ultra in white. It's exactly the same as the original S8000 but has some silver banding around the phone which makes it look a bit more stylish. The only draw back for me is that the back cover is made from very cheap plastic which lets the appearance down a little.

Ok to summarise the main features this device has GPS, Wifi, 3G with a camera on the front and back of phone, a 5MP camera, dual LED flash, Amoled touch screen, and an 800mhz processor.

        Impressive huh?!

Just to be clear despite the high specs this is not a 'smart phone', so if you are looking for feature such as Tethering, then sadly this is not possible. Having said that, for a lot of people the features are more than adequate.

The phone also has some pretty cool features, like the ability to control certain application by tapping the top of the phone, or shaking it. For example you have sometimes many different widgets displayed on the home screen, if you want to get rid of all these you just open the widget tab, shake the phone, and viola they disappear. Other cool apps include Microsoft Exchange Sync so you can sync with your email account and be constantly updated with new emails. There are also some cool application like 'fake call' which can help you escape from those Monday Morning meetings when you'd much rather be on Facebook. There's also a very interesting security feature which, when a new sim card is inserted, will send a text with the sim number to a recipient you choose. So if your phone is stolen, and the person puts in a new sim, they are instantly exposed.

The call quality seems to be generally good, and the AMOLED screen is very appealing.

Of of the drawbacks of this phone is that when scrolling through the touch screen options it's hard sometimes to go up or down without accidentally pressing an option.

Overall it's a high spec phone, but for the price of around £200 you might consider getting yourself a budget/mid range smartphone instead.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Good phone to use with its features but little outdated now

I got this phone for free on contract at the start of last year and can get an upgrade later on this year which, at the moment im looking forward to, but I can wait at the same time. The phone itself is sharp and looks very nice and its touch screen features are very good. As I got this phone for free on contract and I've heard its a lot cheaper as well its an advantage over the iPhone or Blackberry. However some of the features or lack of features means it is a little outdated now and the thought of having an iPhone or Blackberry is very tempting. The phone does have good features for the internet and sites such as myspace, facebook and twitter which are good to use but aren't as good as the higher spec phones on the market. The phone is easy to easy and get hold of this is helpful and its battery life is quite reasonable to be fair. I have had problems with the touch screen in the past and it has taken me several restarts to re-sync the phone in order to use it again which can be quite annoying.

In conclusion, I do like the phone and like it even more because of the look of it and the fact that it is different than an iPhone or Blackberry which makes it more unique. However it can be a little temperamental on the touch screen and some of its features are getting outdated by other phones.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

A good but not great phone.

On the one hand this is a perfectly capable phone and compared to an iPhone or Blackberry it's much cheaper. The basic services all work fine. The camera on the other hand is very blurry so unless you are taking a picture of something that's very close it will be of poor quality despite the fact that it's described otherwise. There are Twitter and Facebook applications but they don't let you upload a picture straight to the service like most modern phones do. What is good about this phone it that it looks excellent and after a week or so is not difficult to use. The touch screen can be a bit sensitive at times but again this is something you get used to and it has many fun features such as activating a call when you want to avoid someone. I would recommend this phone but if you primarily want to use the internet or for pictures then I would look elsewhere.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Not a user-friendly phone. Far too many design and software errors

This is a bit of a negative review but I thought it would be helpful to write about some of the issues I have had with my Samsung Jet GT S8000.

        1. Orange filled it with so much of their branded rubbish that the phone had almost no internal memory available. I could not uninstall any of these nor could have I been able to install any new widgets (not that there are many decent ones). I installed a memory card but you need phone memory sapce for the widgets...so this never worked. The phone was advertised in the Orange shop as having all the latest media apps (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook etc) when in fact it had none and I am unable to install any of these due to all the Orange rubbish. Ok this is technically not the phone's fault but still an irritation...so be careful when buying from Orange.

        2. The touchscreen is not very good at all. It is unresponsive and takes a hefty press (often two or three) to respond. Scrolling is difficult and tapping on anything small when browsing the internet (like a username box) is annoyingly difficult.

        3. There are hardly no widgets available in the supposed Widgets Store and those that are available are remarkably poor.

        4. The screen wallpaper cannot be locked. This means that when you try to move a widget or access the sidebar containing widgets you inadvertantly switch the wallpaper. Very annoying.

        5. There appears to be no way to turn off the beeping noise when you press onscreen keys...unless you have the phone in silent mode. Or if there is I have not found it and no-one else I know can work it out either!

        6. There is a distict lack of available support for the phone, either online or in paper format.

        7. The flash on the camera turns people into ghosts when taking a picture indoors. Their faces literally become orbs of light.

        8. Very weak reception. I often cannot get any decent reception when friends (also on Orange so its not the network) have no reception problems. I have been with Orange for my last 2 previous phones and never had any problems in these areas.

Ok think that is about it for my gripes....well there may be a few more minor ones but hopefully you have realised that I think this is a dreadful phone. The processor may be fairly swift and able to handle multiple apps/windows at once but what is the point when the touchsceen is too poor to allow decent web browsing and there are minimal decent apps for the phone?!

I would not recommend buying a Samsung Jet, there are a a plenitude of better phones available for the same price.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

One off the best phones I have owned

I have owned a Samsung Jet now for 9 months, it came free from Orange as part of my regular 18 month contact upgrade. I have owned Samsung phones for approximately 8 years now and have always been pretty happy with them. When it came to choosing my new phone I knew exactly what I wanted, something fairly small and more feminine, easy to use, stylish, touch screen and either pink or black.

The Samsung Jet fitted my needs exactly, its much smaller and lighter than many phones on the market nowadays but still ultra stylish. The touch screen is amazing, very fast and accurate I can even use my nails to tap the buttons and it still works this is not the same of my partners Nokia X6 which I find much harder to use.

It also came with a little black case which is perfect for keeping it clean and scratch free. Its not very often now that free accessories come with phones its usually just another way for companies to make more money by selling you a case at the point of sale.

I am quite a simple phone user as long as I can text and make a call easily then I am happy and this phone does this fantastically. I have used the camera function and the web browser several times and have been very impressed with them too. The web sometimes does not connect but think this is more of a network issue than a handset one.

The camera is very easy to use allowing you to take photos both portrait and landscape as when you turn your phone the text/image moves with you. Taking the photo is actioned my holding in the button on the right hand side of the phone. The images are always very clear and good quality and can be easily downloaded onto my PC via the USB cable the phone comes with.

Other features of the phone include a calendar, calculator, mp3 player, radio, convertor, alarm, world clock, memo, video player, bluetooth and games to name a few. I still have not used all of these functions but ones that I have such as the alarm and calculator work perfectly.

Overall a brilliant little phone perfect for my fairly simple needs, and one of the best I have owned!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Great touchscreen phone

            My First Ever Touchscreen Phone...

It was time to upgrade to a new phone, but since turning ahem... well lets just say I am over the age of 21, I no longer have indepth knowledge about the new mobile phones available. I used to know which phone I wanted well in advance and I would have compared the different cameras and games and other bits and bobs, and probably know more than the sales person in the shop.

However, this was different. All I knew was I wanted one that was fairly easy to use and that had a touchscreen (the one new gadget I knew about).

I went into a phone shop and had a look and to be honest most of the touchscreen phones in there were quite "blokey", by that I mean quite big and heavy and not really what I wanted (Im not a girly girl, but my handbag on a night out is only so big!).

The Samsung Jet stood out to me due to its fairly lightweight nature (110g) and its quite compact size (108.8 x 53.5 x 11.9mm), but the compact size without sacraficing screen size (which is pretty much the size of the phone).

            ** Using The Phone **

I picked this phone and was very excited to try it out, however the actual instructions for the phone were quite hard to follow. They didnt really seem to give much away about basic functions. These really need to be looked at as I do sometimes like to have a quick read (especially when charging the phone up... that long, agonising wait!).

The touchscreen feature took a while to get used to, as its quite annoying when you touch the screen and something pops up or disappears when you dont want it to. To be honest this is a minor problem, and it soon becomes second nature and you dont tend to give it much thought.

The only thing I would say is that I would have thought that a stylus pen would of been a good idea for this phone. I have quite small hands, but my partner has real trouble using some of the features (especially when surfing the net) as his fingers seem to touch several options at once.

The camera and video on this phone is very good, and the auto focus really makes a difference to the unwanted blurry photos you sometimes get on mobiles.

The games... well to put it bluntly, there arent any, which I found a shame. I dont think I have ever had a new phone without at least one basic game on it. Its not a major problem, but something that I thought Samsung would have done.

            ** Specification/Features **

            *Memory card slot
            *GPRS
            *PC connection
            *Connects to wireless internet
            *Smartphone
            *3G
            *MP3 and radio player
*Bluetooth, email, organiser, poly ring tones, text, phonebook, calls etc

            ** My Opinion **

I do like this phone, and get on quite well with it now (I have mastered the art of Widgets and reverting them back to the tool bar, whilst looking a bit odd - those of you with these phones will know what I am talking about!).

The only problem I have is the battery life is not brilliant. I do use my phone for texting a fair bit and for going on the internet (which is brilliant!), but if I use the screen (doing these things) then the battery can go down quite rapidly, which is a shame.

The camera and video recorder more than make up for this one bug bear that I have, and generally I think this phone has been a good introduction to touch screen phones, and put my faith back into mobiles in general.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Decent phone, but not great.

I have now had this phone for more than a year, and as a whole i would have to say that i am pleased, although it is far from perfect. It has a fantastic user interface, looks wonderful, and does all you need it to and more. It has a great 5mp camera, with face/smile detection, can make fake calls (good for getting out of boring conversations !), and many, many more well thought out features, but it is just not quite durable enough. I have rarely dropped it at all, and yet some days the touch screen just refuses to work, especially in the rain. A tiny few droplets on the screen and it gets to take battery and sim card out time, or it will not work. It is problems like this which, although may not seem too much, really ruin the appeal of the phone, as they always seem to happen at the worst times. Battery life is ok, but nothing special, which is the same hat can be said for the value for money. This phone is the dream of a careful technology wizard, but if can look past the fancy fatures which you barely use anyway, it it slightly disappointing, s it it majorly brought down by its bad/ dysfunctional qualities. Looking for a phone with the latest gadgets and gizmos? You have found it. Looking for a durable phone with good value for money? Look on.

              Stylish, but not great

I have had my samsung jet for just over a month now. I haven't been blown away by it and it hasn't been as good as I was hoping for. It looks really nice and stylish, which I have to admit is probably the main reason I bought it so can't complain! Haven't had any major problems with the touch screen but it does take a while to get used to. One annoying thing is the keypad when you send a text, it automatically comes up as a qwerty keyboard which i do not like as the keys are too small for my fingers (and i am very slim!) so it is hard to press the right keys. I have read instructions of how to change this to an azerty but I cannot seem to get this feature up on my particular model. Battery life is RUBBISH only seems to last about a day and needs charging up again! However it does seem to charge up quickly. Camera is good quality, well much better than my old one and pictures come up good as the screen is so big. Has a few nice features but i would like to have been able to customise mine a bit more i.e. the back ground, text alerts etc.
Overall i am happy with this phone, but compared to my friends other touch phones I think they are better
