This Smart Cover fits quite snuggly around the iPad screen but it doesn't offer much protection, especially if you place in in a bag or don't clean it often enough. If anything, this has done damage to my iPad rather than protect it.
When placed into my bag little balls of grit got lodged in between the screen and the fabric side of the cover. These balls of grit stick to the fabric and therefore get tangled up, and move about on the screen. I have since had 4 new minor scratches on the screen from where the cover moved about in place and the grit glided across the screen.
This adds a lot of weight to the iPad too, when holding it with one hand you really notice the difference. It's not uncomfortable to hold when folded back but does make the iPad more prone to slipping out of my hand because it folds up, just holding on to the cover at the back is a bad idea without holding the bottom, as it will literally just fall apart since the iPad is heavier, thus falling to the ground.
Mine being black leather, it has a smooth but hard outside and a soft fabric on the inside. This has lots of little fibres sticking up all over the place but isn't rough in any way. It feels like felt although I can't say for definite that it is.
This is relatively simple to clean on the leather side, you can just wipe it down with a cloth soaked in dettox and this doesn't get any colour out or damage the cover, it works fine and removes dirt although not every little bit can be picked up with just a quick going over.
This also cleans the iPad screen when you put it down, don't know if this is intentional by Apple, i'm assuming not. Basically it wipes the fingerprints off the screen but there are fingerprint lines where the folding ridges are because the fabric is indented and cannot brush the screen, even if you press hard.
I have had this since Christmas 2012 and it's not broken but at the top the bar has a lot of faded metal around the corners and this appears as black stuff on the back of the iPad, it just rubs off onto it.
The magnet is quite strong though and takes a good yank to get it off. It's not difficult to get off, but what i would describe as "secure"
Overall it's not great, it traps dirt and grit, it's not really designed for protection other than to stop sharp objects hitting the screen, and the metal is already wearing off after a few months so i will award 3 stars.
I recently purchased a brand new iPad as a little treat for myself. I had decided before buying that I was going to buy myself a cover for the iPad to keep it shiny and new for as long as possible. I wanted to buy an official Apple cover as because I was spending so much on the iPad, I wanted a cover that would fit it perfectly and protect it well.
There are 2 types of the Apple smart cover available, the polyurethane and the leather. The polyurethane style is available in 5 colours - dark grey, grey, pink, green and blue. The leather is also available in 5 colours - cream, tan, black, dark blue and red. The polyurethane variety currently costs £35 and the leather costs £59 when bought directly from Apple. I opted for a polyurethane cover in light grey, which I thought matched my white iPad well.
So what is the cover? The cover is designed to attach to the iPad and protect the screen. It attaches to the iPad with little magnetic clips and is designed to fit the iPad perfectly. The cover is flexible and is indented into 4 sections. This is where the clever design comes into play, the cover can be folded back to create a stand for the iPad which is perfect for if you are watching movies or typing on the iPad.
The cover is also cleverly designed using magnetic forces to switch your iPad onto sleep mode and lock the screen when you close the cover. When the cover is opened, the iPad switches back on. This is a good way to save power and prolong battery life.
The inside of the cover is made of microfibre and Apple claim it will keep your iPad screen clean. I would agree with this as when I open the cover there is never any dirt or dust on the iPad screen, just the odd fingerprint, but we can't expect a miracle from the cover!
This cover does not protect the back of the iPad which is good for those of you who like your iPad to still look like one. Also available in the apple range is the 'Smart Case' which has the same front as the smart cover but for a slightly larger price tag, will also protect the back of the iPad.
I have had my iPad for nearly 2 months now my iPad screen has stayed in perfect condition. The cover itself has also stayed in great condition however I have not taken the iPad out of the house and it hasn't been in any handbags etc. One thing I would say about the light grey colour is that it does mark easily for example if my hands are slightly dirty it can end up with fingerprints on it, however I'm sure that if I picked a different shade I would not have had this problem.
Overall I love my iPad and think I chose the right product to protect it. The design of this cover is so clever. I would definitely recommend it to anyone with an iPad.
For Christmas I was given an Ipad 2 and I must say that it is a great invention and I am more than happy with it. I was a little disappointed at first that the new ipad was released a few months later, but after some mixed reviews I am glad I was given the Ipad 2.
I have over the past few months been treating my Ipad to some new accessories to protect it and make sure that it stays in the best condition possible. One that I purchased was the Ipad Smart cover which I purchased from the Apple Store it is made of polyurethane and I opted for the grey to go with my black Ipad.
This cover cost me £35 and it is a magnetic cover that protects your Ipad screen. When you lift the cover it automatically turns on and vice versa when you close the cover the Ipad goes into sleep mode. When using your Ipad it can also act as a stand to support your Ipad when you are using it.
This Smart Cover comes in orange, green, pink, blue and grey, so you can personalise you Ipad, there also come in leather as well as the polyurethane, but these are obviously at an extra cost.
This is a great protection cover for your Ipad when it is not in use, I put my Ipad into my bag or on my side and know that it will be safe until I next go to use it. The cover is easy to attach and I can watch a film with ease and without holding my Ipad as the cover acts as a stand and hold it in the perfect position for you to watch.
The cover is durable and hard wearing and I have been using it for just under 5 months and it still looks as good as new. The magnetic connection means that you do not waste the battery when you are not using your Ipad as long as you close the cover.
I used this case on my holiday and it was perfect for the flight as it held my Ipad in place on the table as I played games and watched films to past the time.
There is only one disadvantage that I can find and that is compared to other cases and covers on the market the Apple cover ids £35, which there are cheaper styles available on the market. Buying this cover can be costly especially if you have just purchased the Ipad itself.
Due to the cost of this cover I would mark it down to four stars, but if you have a spare £35 it is definitely worth personalising your Ipad with a Smart Cover of your choice.
Having bought my brand spanking new iPad the first thought that came to mind was protecting the screen! As I have a great tendency to scratch new things pretty much instantly, I set about looking for a cover/case suitable. I started by looking online and after trawling through numerous cases and covers by other well-known brands such as Belkin etc. I found my way once again to the apple website where I came across the Smart Cover. This seemed to fit the bill for me as I knew I didn't want a hard shell cover for my iPad and could not find a quality and affordable silicone cover anywhere. I took the plunge and bought one from my nearest apple shop. I can honestly say I am so glad I did! This is a superb product that I couldn't be without now. The cover fits perfectly in place thanks to its ingenious magnetic strip designed to attach the cover to the side of the iPad with ease. I was a bit worried about this as other reviews I read mentioned the cover slipping off, but no such problems were had by me. As long as the cover is correctly positioned, the cover will stay in place no matter what. Another great feature is the sleep/wake function. When the cover is removed, the iPad wakes up and also when you put the cover back on it sleeps and locks the iPad (great for people like me who are forgetful and don't want to end up coming back to an iPad with no battery!). The cover is easily maintained with a slightly damp soft cloth and if particularly resilient, it should not become scratched and marks will come off with ease. I chose the plain grey cover and it looks extremely stylish and protects the screen from scratches like nothing else. The inside of the cover acts as a duster for the screen also, with its soft texture picking up dust and bits of dirt from the screen so every time you shut the cover, your iPad gets a mini valet too!
Yet another great feature of the Smart Cover is the folding mechanism, the cover is divided into four sections with vertical grooves which allows it to be folded in a pyramid fashion to product two different effects. I find the position they recommend for typing very useful as it allows you to type faster as you would on a traditional keyboard. The second more elevated position is also great for displaying pictures or using Facetime. With regards to price, I initially thought it was a bit much but after shopping around found not too many other iPad covers that offered what I was looking for at a cheaper price. After having this cover for nearly two months I would definitely say it is worth the money and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone or buy another one!
Anyone that owns an iPad immediately becomes a little over protective of it - it is such a wonderful bit of kit and the thought of damaging it is terrifying! Mine was paid for by work and accordingly they also purchased one of these smart covers to use with it. I am very glad they did and very impressed by the way it works so well with the iPad itself.
To be fair, this product was designed and made specifically for use with the Apple iPad and therefore has an Apple pricetag - it retails for around the £35 mark and you can pick them up online or in major retailers. I actually saw them on offer in my local Tesco Extra the other day for around £30 although weirdly some colours were more expensive than others. They come in all shades, pastels and block colours, mine is bright red.
The cover is very useful because somehow (I honestly have no idea how but it is genius) the cover doubles as a quick on and off function for the iPad. The minute you open the cover the device senses this and wakes up, likewise you can just close the cover and the iPad shuts down, no need to switch it off. I really like this function.
The cover is indented into four long sections which mean you can fold the cover into a toblerone shaped prop which angles the iPad so that it is easier to type on in landscape. I use this quite a lot and it is nice to have the option to prop it up as typing on a flat surface is harder on your wrists.
The other weirdly innovative thing about this cover is the magnetic clasps with which it attaches itself to the devive, somehow you just cannot attach it wrongly, the little clasps always hit the iPad in exactly the right place even if you try and do it wrong you simply cannot. The cover attaches with these magnets only but is so securely attached that it is not an issue when frequently opening and closing it.
I have had the cover on mine now for around 5 months and the leather effect is covered in small scratches and marks which shows me how wise a decision it is to use it because if this wasn't on it would be the screen taking that hammering. Personally I think this cover is fantastic and well worth the investment to keep your precious tablet safe, secure and scratch free.
Now this is an apple product which has been well thought through and is a perfect demomstration that developing cases whilst your developing your product is the only way to make them as good as they can be. The idea behind these smart covers is that it is pointless striving to make a product as thin and attractive as possible, just to encase it in some think, unsightly hunk of plastic. Therefore this smart cover is one very thin layer of either plastic or leather, dependent on how much your willing to spend, that protects just the screen and leaves the back uncovered.
The success of this product is in the design. It has been exceedingly well thought through and perfectly executed. By designing this product at the same time as the iPad itself, they have been able to incorporate aspects directly into the iPad. I am of course referring to the magnets which allow to this product to be attatched and removed as easily as it can be opened and closed. There are a pair of magnets built directly into the side of the iPad which the magnets on the smart cover then join up with to hold the cover in place. This system is made better by the fact that there is only one place on the device that the pairs of of magnets will line up. This means that to attach it and line it up it is as easy as putting the two together and they will line up by themselves, which means that your cover will always go on perfectly aligned.
Furthermore, the cover has cleverly been designed in panels so that they can fold up to create stands for your device. For example if you wanted to type on your device, you fold the cover back into a triangle shape which then sits on the table, giving your device a 30 degree angle, ideal for typing. Or you can stand the iPad against it to give it a 75 degree angle so you can use it to watch movies etc. This included stand function is very useful and I use it very often.
Not only this but the cover has a smart function that means that when the cover is shut the iPad automatically locks, and then wakes up when it is opened. This again is a very useful feature as it prevents wasted battery life from unknowingly leaving your device unlocked and it is also very nice to not have to open the case and then press the unlock button, having it all happen together is very easy and useful.
The only down side to this product is that the iPad does not fit in the charging dock with the cover on, but it is so easy to remove that this is hardly a problem. They also don't work with the original iPad as they do not have any built in magnets to hold them in place. It is also quite expensive, costing £35 for a polyurethane model or £59 for a leather one. These come in an array of colours as well. Blue, grey, green, orange and pink for polyurethane and brown, black, grey, cream and red for the leather ones. These funky colours go very well with either the black or the white iPads and are just very nice, useful and colorful accessories.
