A very good reliable and quality microwave

When we got married we needed absolutely everything for our home, and so we put together two wedding lists, one of which was from argos and on it we placed this Sanyo EM-S1567 microwave oven, which at the time, almost 5 years ago (!) cost around the £50 mark if I remember correctly. The reason we put this on our list, was firstly because we felt it was a reasonable price, and secondly it looked like it was a straightforward microwave which we wanted. I wasn't interested in a fancy appliance, just something that can heat, cook and defrost!

Our Sanyo microwave is silver grey in colour and slots well into the corner of our kitchen on the workshelf, so it is a good size microwave. This is a 800w microwave in terms of power, with a 230V power course, and a 20L oven capacity. In regards to its dimensions it measures 45.8 cm by 35.5 cm by 29.5 cm.

Like most microwaves this product comes with a turntable to place the food on, which can easily by washed to be kept clean. The turntable sits until a 'roller rest' however this is where there is a slight downside to the product, as the rubber ring that sits under the turntable and helps it move looks a bit flimsy in my opinion, and doesn't quite fit in with the rest of the quality of the product, however in saying that, I haven't had any problem with this, and the turntable has always worked fine. Just a minor gripe.

On the right side of the microwave door is the display panel. Underneath the display part, there is an 'auto cook menu' giving you six extra cooking options : Baked Potato, Drink, Popcorn, Frozen Meal, Pizza and reheat. I will be honest and say that after almost 5 years, I have only ever used the drink button, simply because I either don't eat/cook the other items or wouldn't use a microwave for these. The drink function is very useful however, as after you select the button you can press for how many drinks you want to heat. I use this button to heat milky coffee for my husband and I, and press 2 and it heats the mugs to the perfect temperature.

Below these six functions are six more buttons: Power, Kitchen Timer, Cook Time, Weight Cook, Weight Defrost and Speed Defrost. As I said at the beginning, I was looking for a simple microwave that cooks/heats/defrosts food and so again, I only make use of the weight cook and the weight defrost buttons when I am thawing meat or bread. To keep myself right however, I always refer back to the manual that comes with the microwave, especially when it comes to defrosting meat, and it has always worked perfectly. This has been a blessing when, for example, I have forgotten to leave out chicken to defrost and realise just before starting the dinner that the meat I wanted to use is still in the freezer frozen solid.

Below these buttons on the panel are the numbers to press for the time, as well as a clock button and reset button. The reset button is one that you will use EVERYTIME. In fact, you have to press the reset button everytime you want to use the microwave and press in a time, this button must be pressed first. It can take a little getting used to, but I now do it without even thinking. I don't actually use the clock button, for the simple reason that I try to conserve electricity by not leaving the microwave on standby when it isn't in use. For those that don't worry about such things, then this is a good addition, so you can get the up to date time quickly.

In regards to noise, I wouldn't consider this microwave to be noisy. Yes, there is obviously some noise, but if I left the room I could no longer hear it. When the cooking time has ended the microwave gives three loud beeps, which I can hear if I am outside the room, although not too far away, which is useful.

In terms of ease of use, I hardly ever had to look the instruction manual when we got this microwave and the only reason I may consult it from time to time is when I want to check defrosting times for weights of meats.

I have had this microwave for almost 5 years now, and have never (touch wood!) had any problems with it. It has always worked well at reheating/cooking/defrosting which is all I want from a microwave. At the price that Argos were charging at the time, this is an excellent value for money long lasting and reliable microwave. The only other negative bar my minor gripe about the rubber under the turntable is that this microwave is now quite difficult to source, as obviously there are newer versions on the market, however if you are lucky enough to pick up one you will have a long lasting microwave!

It's outlived every goldfish I've ever had

After realising a couple of years ago that the average amount of time I spent on dinner was about 10 minutes (due to a vey stressful job) including eating, I found I had no time to create a complex dish, or even a simple pasta, and so bought this to cook my rather pathetic microwave meals.

      ~Price~
I bought this microwave, at a cost of around £60, although its selling for much less than that on eBay now. It was a pristine white model, with a relatively nice design, if simple, and suave buttons rather than the more usual dial on other microwaves.

      ~Features~
There are a vast array of settings on the microwave, and preset buttons including reheat, pizza, baked potato, popcorn, frozen meal and drink. I've only used 3 of these features in all my years of owning it, but it's nice to know the options are there should I ever crack open the instructions manual and be more adventurous in my microwave cooking. THere are also a few more features were you can punch in the weight of what your cooking, or 'speed cook.' Again, I've never used these.

You don't actually need to understand all the features, you can just type in a time and it will go, but it's nice to know they're there.

      ~The design~
It's a nice piece of kit in its simplicity, and was shiny when new. It's yellowed a bit from cooking smoke (I think) as its located next to the hob, but I have wipd it down, it just can't be helped. THe inside clear glass plate is also easily removable, which is good because my porridge always spills over, and its easy to clean. I do admit though, next to some shiny stainless steel appliances, this can probably look a bit tatty, although you can buy a silver version.

      ~Reliability~
To sum it up, excellent. It hasn't once let me down, even when someone decided to put a CD in to see if it would explode (thankfully it didn't). My food still cooks absolutely fine, and I haven't sprouted an extra nd so far, so no microwave radiation yet.

      ~Conclusion~
An excellent good value microwave, now at a bargain price on eBay. Reliable to the core.

      A good buy - recommended.

This is an excellent microwave which I have found to be very compact and yet spacious inside. The controls are very easy to operate and are very clear and the settings with regards to pizza, hot drinks etc. are very useful however the popcorn function is not very useful for my family.

The weight control defrost setting has also proved a boon. The only improvement might be a minute setting which was used extensively on my old model. The alarm which reminds you that your item has finished its' cooking is an excellent feature too. I would prefer that the light went out after thirty seconds rather than having to shut the door as sometimes I would prefer to leave the door ajar to let smells and steam escape.

Overall it has proven to be excellent value for money and I would recommend this as a good value microwave with excellent features for the price.

      Brilliant, worth every penny.

My old microwave stopped working and looked in different shops. I had a budget of £50 and bought the Sanyo EM-S1567S from Argos. S is on the end of model number because it is in silver.
It is very easy and simple to use, by the touch buttons and a clear display.
The first six buttons are: Baked Potatoe, Drink, Popcorn, Frozen Meal, Pizza and Reheat.
The next set of buttons are Power, Kitchen Timer, Cook Time, Weight Cook, Weight Defrost and Speed Defrost.
Below these are the number buttons that are used to enter cooking time or setting the clock, by using the clock button. The other remaining buttons are Reset and Stop/Start. The reset button resets any cooking time left to zero.
The microwave defaults power setting is 'High', so if an item says to cook for 10mins on high, you just press '1' '0' '0' '0' and then 'Start/Stop'. If you open the door before the time is up, the microwave will stop. To continue, close the door and press Start/Stop and the cooking will continue with the remaining time left. It is also possible to program a 2 stage cooking period.
For me, this is best microwave I have had. It has been used everyday for other 5 months, when I first had it and never has left me down. I also found it to be quiet. Inside it is made of stainless steel, making it easy clean. To clean, unplug from mains and use a slightly damp cloth. Then use a dry cloth after.
      My rating is 10/10.
