I'm normally a tea drinker, but there are times when you have to have something with a bit more kick to wake you up. I'm reviewing Douwe Egberts Pure Gold coffee, and there is a cup of it sitting next to me as I write this. I've been drinking this coffee after a friend recommended it to me - she said she would drink nothing else - and I have to say I know what she means. This was about 2 years ago. I have returned to the supermarket a few times now to pick this one up. The product comes in a clear glass jar with a press in lid with plastic stopper as opposed to the usual screw-top jars that the majority of coffee comes in. A little strip of paper connects the jar to the lid to keep the freshness intact, as well as a foil lid at the neck. The label covers most of the jar itself. It is a metallic bronze colour at the top, flowing down through some darker brown clouds at the base with the stylised woman and coffee icon in the middle. The writing is in white and "medium and well balanced" description of the coffee itself is right at the base. This design is repeated on the reverse of the jar, and in the middle is a description, the Douwe Egberts guarantee and details for requesting further information. Douwe Egberts is part of the Sara Lee Coffee & Tea U.K. Ltd. Pure Gold is a blend of the finest quality beans, roasted with Douwe Egberts expertise to give a medium and well balanced flavour suitable for any time of the day. It goes on to give a little more information about the brand and the coffee tradition, which dates back more than 250 years. Underneath is a printed signature that is an assurance of quality and high standards. When the product has been used, the jars can be recycled. On the label it advises to remove the label and recycle the paper and glass separately, although I feel the jars are pretty enough to soak the label from and then reused in gifts. Filled with sweets, they would be ideal. The lid pulls out of the jar which does take a bit of effort but gives me more hope that the coffee will stay fresh inside the jar for longer than a plastic lid. It makes it feel more like a seal than just a lid. When the foil film is pierced and removed, the smell of coffee wafts up to you, warm and inviting. It smells rich and luxurious. A teaspoon of coffee placed in the bottom of a mug with (to my taste) some sugar is all you need for a nice cup of coffee. Add hot water and stir, and add milk or cream for a lovely hot drink. With milk, it is tasty, but we discovered at Christmas that with some cream it is borderline heavenly. My Husband does not like the taste, however, as he considers it a bit too nutty for him. For me, it is a smooth taste, but to each their own. The taste is smooth in the mouth; on the tongue first you get the impression of richness and the warmth (I find this better drank warm rather than hot), and then as you swallow you get the full taste of the coffee. It lingers in the mouth without any bitterness you can sometimes get from a too-strong coffee and gives a pleasant aftertaste. And while you get the buzz from the caffeine, it is smooth - kind of like waking up with full energy as opposed to having a cold shower. I like to drink this in the morning at work, and think it is great for Saturday or Sunday morning. The product is sold in two sizes: 100g and a larger 200g size. I find a 100g jar fine for home but have the big one at work for that first drink of the day. The 100g jar sells at around the £3.25 mark and the 200g jar for about £6, but there are normally offers for the careful shopper. I find it is pricey, but to my mind worth the cost as I enjoy the taste. Again, this product is widely available in most supermarkets. There are cheaper alternatives available, yes, but if you like something, you buy it.
I'm always looking out for make-up that works at a reasonably cheap price. I've previously written about Boots 17 Eyeshadow Solo Pots, and having that experience made me want to try one of their mascaras. I know the 17 range feels a bit like a teenage version of the No. 7 range, having funkier colours than it's sister range, but that didn't put me off trying it. I've used mascaras from the No. 7 range before and wasn't overly impressed with the results. For £4.69 (at time of purchase from Boots) and on my Boots Advantage Card Points as a treat, I thought I'd give it a go. The product comes in two colours: Black or Brown/Black. I thought I'd go for the Black shade as my lashes are quite long anyway to make the colour stand out a bit more. This product comes in a black cylindrical tube with a purple band around the lid and 17 Ultimate Length Mascara in metallic silver and purple along the length. It comes individually wrapped in plastic so you can be sure no-one has used the product before you - this is easy to remove at the perforated strip. On the rear of the tube it tells you it "visibly extends and separates to create ultimate lash length" and that it is "non-clogging and easy to apply. Dermatologically tested. Fragrance-Free" it also gives the company informations and website. The product comes in an 8ml tube which lasts quite a while. The cap twists off easily to reveal a good length wand with a small round brush to apply mascara to your eyelashes. This brush is tapered towards the tip to make it easier to apply the product to lower lashes or the corners, and this helps to give greater definition. The product itself has a faintly chemical smell which is pretty much like every single mascara I have ever smelled (with the possible exception of Maybelline). To be honest, I prefer a mascara to be without too strong a scent so this was perfect for me. The mascara is a thick, glossy black paste which coats the brush, and there is a small lip on the inside of the tube which prevents too much product coming out and causing unnecessary clumps. On application, the brush easily coats each eyelash and does give a greater impression of length, with the tapered point doing a good job for lower lashes as I mentioned before. This is not one of those False Eyelash mascaras though, so do not expect mammoth lashes, but it does give a nice extra bit of length and definition. I was impressed with how long the mascara stayed on my eyelashes. It's had quite a test and has lasted through teary hormonal moments, the wind blowing through the visor of my crash helmet and normal day to day rubbing of eyes. It doesn't claim to be waterproof and I was pleased it lasted through the tears. It also didn't melt in high temperatures, which was a bonus given the recent hot weather. Which leads to another point - taking it off. It does take quite a bit of rubbing with eye make-up remover to get the product off. The two-phase eye make-up removers do work better than creams, but I still needed a couple of attempts with a folded and soaked piece of cotton wool effectively scraping it off my eyelashes. I'm removing one star from the overall rating here because this could lead to dragging make-up remover pads over the delicate eye area which I feel isn't great for skin. On the whole I am very impressed with this mascara and would definitely buy it again. I am certainly not put off by the funky appearance of the packaging and love the fact that it is good value for money. It is only made and sold by Boots, but there are usually offers on make-up and getting the Advantage Card points make it a worthwhile purchase. Thanks for reading.
The thing about wearing non-transferable or waterproof make-up is that you need a good make-up remover to take it off with. I like make-up that will stay put from when I put it on in the morning until I take it off at night, so I need a good make-up remover. When I saw the Garnier 2 in 1 for £2.50 at Morrison's (at time of purchase), I thought I'd give it a go. PACKAGING DESCRIPTION This product forms part of Garnier's "Simply Essentials" Range and comes in a 200ml bottle that is rectangular with rounded sides and shoulders, and a flip top cap that covers the opening where you dispense the product. On the front, it tells you it contains Plant Extract + Pro-vitamin B5, that it has no perfume or alcohol and that it is suitable for even sensitive skin. It states it is dermatologically and opthalmologically tested so it can be used for removing facial and eye make-up. In the bottom left corner of the label on the front is a picture of a blue rose. On the reverse, it asks the reader if the product is right for you, then sets out three reasons as to why it is. The reasons are: If your skin feels fragile when cleansing. If changes in temperature, fatigue or stress levels leave skin feeling more sensitive. If you have sensitive skin and are looking for effective make-up removal. Also listed are the ingredients. The reverse is very busy, full of information - including the website address for further information, as well as the telephone number for a skin care advice line. PRODUCT DESCRIPTION This product comes in 2 phases. At the bottom is a pale blue toning liquid with a darker blue liquid floating on top. This top layer is oil-based and is the cleansing aspect of the make-up remover. Directions state to shake the bottle well and then soak cotton wool before applying to face. In sweeping motions I used the sodden cotton wool pad to remove make-up from my eyelids, cheeks and then forehead and nose. There was quite a lot of my make-up on the pad. Following the directions again I used the pad until there was no more make-up on my face. One small complaint: I did have to fold the damp cotton wool in half and pinch over my eyelashes to scrape off the rest of my mascara, otherwise this product works quickly and well. In spite of having an oil-based layer, my skin did not feel greasy after use and, with normal eye cream and moisturiser on top actually felt smooth. The following morning my skin was not greasy at all and my make-up sat quite happily on top of it. Using the product over the course of several days I have noticed that I do need a little more moisturiser than normal for some areas of my face, but that isn't too much of an issue for me. You do need to use quite a bit of product to soak the cotton wool so I can see that it could be used up quite quickly. The scent is fairly nondescript. There is a faint smell which doesn't smell natural but isn't unpleasant at all. I would prefer it to have a little bit of a scent to it - that is just personal taste though.
While looking through the shelves of travel-sized miniatures for rally toiletries, I noticed a dinky glass bottle of roll-on deodorant. The small-sized version of Nivea's Pearl & Beauty Roll-On Deodorant contains 25ml of product, compared to the full-sized 50ml bottle. I thought this would be perfect, so I bought it. I wasn't disappointed. So, first thing first - the packaging: It comes in a lovely, straight glass bottle with a bluntly rounded cap made of white plastic. It has a graphic of some pearls on the front in pearlised pink with the traditional Nivea logo near the top. I like the simplicity of the design and feel it looks good on a dressing table. The shape is such that you could easily locate it in your bag. The product: The deodorant claims it is perfect for beautiful, smooth underarms and that it is ideal for use after shaving. It contains pearl extracts to leave you feeling smooth and cared for. There is no alcohol or colours used in it, and the version I have been testing claims it gives 48-hour protection. A lot of other roll-on type deodorants have been making the 48-hour protection claim lately, so I was interested to see whether it lived up to it. The cap twisted off easily, and at first glance the roller ball beneath was dry. This is not uncommon, as the product settles in transit and dries when on the shelves for a time. An index finger pulled across moved the ball enough to see the glistening product sliding on. The smell was one of the first things I noticed. It smells beautiful - almost like a perfume. The scent is quite warm and floral, quite unlike any of the "fresh" fragrances normally found in roll-on deodorants. This would work well with perfume, and as you warm up so does the scent, so you could get away without it. I was keen to see whether I could use this deodorant immediately after shaving. The milky consistency did go on smoothly and felt luxurious, and it didn't sting at all. One big disappointment is that it takes a very long time to dry, so if you need to dress in a hurry it could put you off. However, when dry it leaves a powdery barrier against day to day sweating. A quick look at my armpits midway through the day reveals the product seems to be working. There is a bit of white residue built up in the wrinkles but it isn't overly noticeable. The scent is still as fragrant as when I put it on and there are no signs of sweat. I have tried this product while doing the odd aerobic workout and, while I have sweated through the deodorant, I haven't smelt afterwards. As for the 48-hour claim. I took this with me to a bike rally and applied it on the Friday morning before we left. Throughout a warm and very humid day it was fine and still seemed fresh at the end of the day. I woke up on the second morning and had a sniff, and I could still smell the deodorant rather than me - all good. I didn't put any more on to see if it would last for the rest of the second day. It did. Before bed on the Saturday evening I had a smell and, OK, so it wasn't as fresh as when I'd first applied it, I didn't smell bad. As we were leaving on the following morning and could bathe when we got home, I didn't apply any more. For daily freshness, apply it daily but if you accidentally forget then you won't be caught out. Overall, I think this deodorant is good value for money. The only downside I have noticed has been the length of time it takes to dry - otherwise this is a great product. I've been using this miniature version for a few weeks now and the product doesn't seem to have gone down very much. At time of writing, the product retails at around £2, but careful shopping around will find an offer. I would definitely buy this product again. I couldn't possibly comment as to whether my armpits look more beautiful, but they do smell nice and feel a bit smoother.
I love body products that remind me of food. A chance walk around the local Asda inevitably lead me to the N-Spa Indulgent Fruit section in the toiletries aisle, and while perusing the coconut and fruity products, I saw a tub what appeared to be an ideal for a foodie. Indulgent Gingerbread Latte Whipped Body Cream. Part of the N-Spa Indulgent Fruit range, this product is currently priced at £1.50 in Asda but I would happily pay up to £3 for this moisturiser. It comes in a circular tub emblazoned with the title on the front in attractive white print on a plain black label. On the reverse side of the label is a description of what the product is and the directions followed by a piece of advise I had to laugh at: "Do not eat, this is not a food product." It certainly smells like one. It reminds me of baking day. On opening the lid, the first thing you notice is the sweetness of the cream, followed by the sharpness of the ginger and at the back there is a warming note of cinnamon. Looking at the product you see a bright and shiny looking cream which is pale orange in colour. Pressing a finger to the glossy cream's surface, a small amount of product transfers to your fingertip but when you rub it onto your skin it melts in. As to body moisturising, it is best after a hot bath or shower. When I dried myself off I reached for this cream and tried it. I dipped a finger in and applied a layer of cream all over my body. It rubbed in very easily and didn't leave my skin feeling greasy - it actually left my skin feeling supple and smooth, and after a couple of days of it, I began to see that there was a bit of a difference to the condition of my skin in general. And the best part of it was that the gorgeous scent lingered for quite a long while. Every time I caught a whiff of it, it was like having a cuddle in front of a warm fire. And while the scent didn't last all day, I can see it as being a wonderful base for an Oriental scented perfume or aftershave. There is a generous amount of product in the tub, 300ml, which I can imagine will last quite a long while. I think this would be a great gift for anyone that likes food, beauty products or comforting, homely scents and personally will be buying this product again. At £1.50 for a tub that will see through many daily moisturising sessions, this product is a bargain. 5 Stars.
I'm a long term fan of Estee Lauder's Double Wear Foundation for it's long term finish. Times are hard, so I thought I'd try a lower priced foundation that promised something similar. My eyes were immediately caught by the L'Oreal advertising campaigns with smooth skinned beautiful women and the captions that say about "All Day Radiance". I thought I'd give it a go, and here are my thoughts on it. Packaging: A smoothly curved bottle with a red dispenser, topped by a clear cap. This lets you see the shade and level of foundation left in the bottle easily. On the front, it proudly states "Infallible Make Up Lasting Perfection Foundation. Fights the signs of make-up meltdown. 16H All Day Radiance. Non-Transfer." On the back, it gives a bit more description about the product and it's composition, as well as having a peel-back section to see the full list of ingredients. Price and Range: I paid the £12.29 for the 30ml bottle and chose a shade which was surprisingly close to my own skin tone - normally the L'Oreal foundation shades are too orange for my skin so it was a nice surprise. I chose shade 125 - Natural Rose. There are about 7 different shades varying from palest Porcelain to tanned Golden Sun. Product: On the back of the bottle it states it has Co-Resistium Technology with Hydra-Luminous complex to help against make-up meltdown and to keep skin looking fresh all day. This product is for all skin types, and I'm pleased to say I didn't have any adverse reactions to it. It is also SPF15. When I first pumped some product from the sleek red nozzle, I immediately noticed how powdery it felt. I put a little on my fingertips and started on my cheeks. The coverage wasn't what I was hoping for and I ended up needing to put on more product than I thought as some of the foundation had settled into my fingerprints and wasn't going onto my face. When I did get the coverage I wanted, it took about 15-30 minutes to settle down but then I was impressed with the finish. My skin did look dewy and fresh with good coverage. I applied some more make up on top of it and it stayed put - another bonus. The smell is nice and light - it's a fresh scent that goes with the promise of luminous cheeks. Duration and Testing the Non-Transfer Claim: I have to say that I have given this product quite a rigorous workout. The first time I tried it, I did a couple of hours of housework while the weather was really warm, followed by some gardening. I did sweat, which is good so my skin is breathing, but the foundation didn't melt that much. At the end of the day, my face did look similar to how it was when first made up. My nose and forehead had suffered a little meltdown, as had my chin, but the rest of it didn't look too bad. It removed easily as well. I did test the foundation very heavily on it's Non-Transfer promise. I took a trip by motorbike and naturally was full of hopes that the make-up would stay put. Sad to say that after application, the helmet had rubbed away a fair bit of foundation from areas under the helmet. For day to day use though where the only transfer will be rubbing a jumper while putting it on, or blowing your nose I'd say this isn't too bad (although I did see a foundation blotch on a tissue after a sneeze.) Would I buy this product again? Probably not. I'll use it to the end of the bottle as I think it's worth it for day to day use, but for hot days and biking I shall look elsewhere.
The thing that always attracts me to look at the No. 17 make-up section of Boots is all the pretty colours of eyeshadow. There are a wide variety of fashionable shades, so there will be something to appeal to everyone. I was seriously drawn to them though in the months before my wedding. I was looking for something very special and, as everything was on a budget, the price was a consideration. Shopping with my friend, I saw a couple of metallic shades which immediately caught me eye. I saw there was a 2 for £5 offer and was smitten. The shades I picked were "Statuesque" and "Mardi Gras". Coming in a dinky round pot framed in black plastic with "17 Eyes" printed on the otherwise clear lid, these eyeshadows provide great value for money and lovely lasting colour. Statuesque is a metallic pinky-beige colour that shimmers subtly on the skin, and Mardi Gras is a darker shimmery brown. Together, they created the perfect smoky eyes look for me. They really sat well and lasted throughout the whole of my wedding day - the only thing not flagging at the end of the day was this eyeshadow! The eyeshadows are lovely and soft to the touch, giving a good amount of colour to the applicator or fingertips. This colour transfers well to the skin. On applying a second colour, they blend really well together and don't slide to the corners of your eyes. This colour lasts very well indeed. There are currently 16 shades in the 17 range, varying from a lovely sea blue to a vibrant pink, with all the earth tones and neutrals in between. The shades are: Viva Diva Violet Rock Midnight Pearl Rose Quartz Gold Emerald Green Glimmer Mardi Gras Walnut Pearl Darkness Statuesque Ivory Coast Seagreen Splash Funfair Regal Punky Purple Shocking Pink There is a small downside to my mind - because they are a small pot of colour they don't come with an applicator so you have to have some already or use a fingertip. Using a fingertip does work well and as there isn't much room in the packaging it isn't too much of a nuisance. They are priced at £3.89 in Boots at the moment. Plus you get the Boots points too - on the other hand they're a great treat with a few saved Boots points too. I would definitely recommend these over some other more expensive eyeshadows and prefer these to Avon. The range of colours appeals to both younger as well as more mature tastes, and the fact the eyeshadow is nice and silky means it doesn't drag over delicate skin and sits well.
Dry Shampoo. A hair wash in a can. What a concept! Yet I found myself ignoring it on the haircare shelf for quite a while as I didn't think it would work. I think it was a festival that made me change my mind and buy a test can of this, and it worked so well I bought a full sized version of it. So let's get down to details. The Product. Batiste Dry Shampoo Blush comes in a 150ml aerosol can. The directions state to hold the can about 30cm away from hair and spray lightly, leave for a moment and then brush it out. My experience? When I took off my crash helmet, I naturally had helmet hair (flat in the middle and a bit greasy, the rest a bit flyaway). Day 1, I brushed it back into place. As I normally wash my hair every day as it gets greasy quickly, the second day I tried the Batiste Dry Shampoo. I followed the directions, and was pleased with the results. It does leave a little bit of a powdery residue which you can feel on your fingertips but other than that I was impressed. I didn't need to use a lot of product as I only get greasy roots, but as the atomiser sprays in a fine mist that covered the majority of my head anyway the rest of it got a refresh too. It sells at around the £2-£2.50 mark, but careful shopping around could find an offer or two, and for those that really want a quick handbag refresh then there is a travel sized version for sale at around £1.50. Great! To sum that bit up, it wasn't as good as washing it, but I was certainly less conscious that I hadn't washed my hair. The best part was that my hair didn't feel anywhere near as greasy on Day 3 (going home). The Packaging. The product comes in an attractive pink can with a green lid and writing that brands it. It also has outlined pink Hawaiian style flowers down the front. On the reverse side of the can the instructions are given, and also repeated in French and Spanish. The Scent. Blush is a sweet floral scent that matches its name very well. It also has an undertone of vanilla or some other sweet but spicy (to my nose) fragrance that stops it from being too cloyingly sweet. It is a girly scent though. Very nice, and as there are other different fragrances, there should be something in the range for everyone. Overall, I would definitely buy this product again - it's great for camping or festivals/rallies, and is really good for helmet hair. I wouldn't use it as a substitute for washing hair long term, but I'll definitely keep a can of this on the dressing table (and a small one in my camping bag) for days when time seems to run away.
For a product that promises an instant smoothing effect for under-eye wrinkles (A dab on wrinkle-filler, as it states on the box) you would expect something wondrous. And as it cost me £11 for a tiny pot, I would especially expect it to work. I guess we all make mistakes in the continuing search for something to help cover up the signs of ageing. Let's break it down here. The packaging. It's really rather pretty with it's retro style, done in a pink 1950s little cardboard box. The product itself is in a small glass pot with a silver coloured lid and the description printed on the top and side. Like all the products in the Soap and Glory range, the packaging is very attractive with cheeky or fun puns to hint at the product inside. It's a shame that this one falls short of the mark. The product. This is, to me, where it lets itself down. On dabbing a small amount of product under each eye, I didn't notice any difference to my under eye. I did notice though that you probably need to use a very precise amount as not enough means you keep dipping a finger in to add a little more and when you put on too much ... it gets powdery and starts to clump into little balls that stick to your finger. The scent of the product is not really a memorable one - usually the Soap and Glory range do have lovely scents, but this one did nothing for me. Noticing after a few occasions that I had no change at all to the skin below my eyes, I eventually gave up on using it and have still got a lot of it left that won't get used. The price. I certainly don't think it's worth the price I paid for it. £11 would buy a nice "premium" big brand eye cream like L'Oreal or similar. For a novelty or whim purchase, I think you would be very disappointed.
I'd heard several times about the benefits of this product. Skin-So-Soft - good for preventing mosquito bites, not to mention the times people have extolled the scent. For the longest time I just was not tempted to try it. I have lots of body lotions and potions and thought why add another to the collection? I bought it on a whim. With the recent hot weather, I was looking for a way to moisturise my skin and this promised a nice even moisturiser without the heavy feeling that you can get some from creams. I paid the full RRP on this product at the time, but it was on a buy-one-get-one free offer from Avon, and there are usually offers one way or the other. First impressions. It arrived, and I opened the paper bag to see my bottle of moisturising dry oil body spray. The bottle was small and neat - smaller than I thought it would be - and not enclosed in another box. With the bag being recyclable and no additional packaging on the product itself, I was quite happy about the green credentials. The stylised three S characters interlink attractively on the front and the description and label state clearly what it is. It also gives the information in several different languages, with the ingredients and other instructions listed on the underside of the label flap. It says the best time to use it is after a bath, so I did. I spritzed it where I wanted to moisturise and rubbed it in. I'm pleased to say it didn't take a lot of rubbing in and didn't leave a greasy feeling. A couple of sprays per limb with minimal effort and a lovely sheen afterwards. I did notice that my skin felt a bit firmer as well after a couple of days of using it. The scent ... well. It is called Soft & Fresh and it is a very "green", ferny scent with powdery undertones to it. It's probably not to everyone's taste and it is taking a while to grow on me. It is not unpleasant though and reminds me of some of the late 90s perfumes I used to wear. I'd like it if they released it in another scent as I think it has been in the past. Would I recommend it? Yes, I would. There is always a need for a product that is easily absorbed, not overly greasy and conditioning. It is good value for money if you buy it when there is an offer on (which with Avon is more often than not). Advantages: Good price and amount of product Not too much in the way of packaging Light and easily absorbed Disadvantages: The bottle can become a little slippery which makes it a bit difficult to aim when targeting hard to reach areas The scent might not be to everyone's taste You have to wait for the delivery
It's typical. We get Christmas just put to bed, and then the television slowly starts to display adverts for these little Easter treats. Yes, even though Easter is not until March or April, I have seen these beauties on sale in some places from Boxing Day. Which is good, in a way. I remember when I was a kid that I could never get a Cadbury's Creme Egg until almost the day itself, although that might have been Mum rather than the shops. Nowadays they are one of the omnipresent staples of supermarkets and newsagents alike. So the product itself. An egg shaped and egg sized chocolate confection which is filled with predominantly white fondant and a fondant egg "yolk". It used to amaze me how they put it all together without it all melting, given that I can't normally eat one without it doing a little of just that. And the taste? Well, thick Cadbury's chocolate covers this fondant cream to make it very, very sweet - too sweet for me unless I really need a sugar kick. The chocolate gives it a richness and mouth-feel that is unlike a lot of other things on the market. Another good thing about these is the fact they are almost always subject to special offers. 3 for £1 in some places, buy-one-get-one frees and getting them in 6-packs make them ideal for Easter Egg hunts as their brightly-coloured foil wrappers are easy to spot. And while they are such an enduring and iconic product, they are not entirely flawless. The thin foil covering it can, in spite of the best efforts of the manufacturer, tear in places leaving patches of chocolate visible in the display stands - not overly hygienic if lots of people handle it. Also, in my view, they can melt quite easily and be messy for smaller children to eat. Clever advertising and a tasty if overly sweet product make for a good seller year on year, I think, but I can honestly take or leave them.
Having been through practically every available shaving gel/foam/cream on the market in trying to find one that won't dry my skin out, it is somewhat of a relief to find this product. The first thing that drew me to it was the price. It was on a special offer so I paid about £1.60 for it - it usually sells at about £2.50 - and of course having the Boots points does make it a very tempting offer. I thought, as a one-off, it would be a bargain as if I didn't use it often, at least I got the points and it didn't cost the earth. I was pleasantly surprised. The packaging is simplistic, but then it doesn't have to be fashionable really. It features a pair of smooth legs and clear wording showing what it is, what it does and how to use it. On the back, interestingly, it does say to use a moisturiser as well - I don't recall seeing that on another can. I think it would look good in any bathroom because of the simplicity of the design. You get 200ml of gel in the can, and when you squeeze a small amount into your wet palm (and you really don't need a lot) and lather it up, you get a nicely fragranced amount of foam. It spreads well over wet skin, and doesn't vanish as some foams do. It also doesn't clog the razor, rinses easily and it smells lovely too. Soft and not too pervasive, and it lingers ever so gently on your skin afterwards - it won't, however, interfere with any scented body lotion or perfume you wear. It's lovely. It's a product that people will buy. I would definitely buy this shaving gel over the major brands because of how nice my legs felt after shaving. I didn't really need to apply moisturiser as they were quite soft. A bonus. I've only started using this can recently, but I can see it lasting for quite a long time. Bargain. And with the Boots points and frequent offers too, it makes it something I will definitely buy again.
I am a bit of a one for buying different shower gels, particularly if I like one of the fragrances. When I saw the Limited Edition Sumptuous Satin shower cream by Cussons Imperial Leather, I thought "ooh, that sounds nice". I looked at the label, and saw that the product was on a "better than half price offer" of 69p and put it in my basket. Usually this shower gel retails for £1 or thereabouts, but there are frequent offers on to get it on a buy-one-get-one-free, etc. This was quite a while ago. I have got just over half-way through the bottle, and I don't really want to use it up. It's bad when that happens as I feel it is a waste of money, even when I paid a small amount for it. So what exactly is wrong with it? The Bottle - A curved and sweeping clear plastic bottle with a pearlised white flip-top cap for easy dispensing sports an equally elegant label. The bottle IS nice, and the pure looking lines of what could either be flowing cream or satin draped over something looks quite innocent. The label also features the red Imperial Leather logo and it looks rather classy. No problems so far then. The Product - The product is rather more a gel than a cream as it is pearlised and semi-translucent. You get 250ml in a bottle and it is fragranced with honeysuckle and almond oil, but rather than an intense floral smell, it smells somewhat powdery and very sweet. Not my cup of tea at all. When it is used, you need a larger than normal amount on a body puff or your hand, and it lathers soft bubbles that last well. The fragrance, however, didn't last much longer than when you towelled off. Another thing - it left my skin really rather dry. I was disappointed as I would have thought the almond oil would have been good at moisturising. The message on the back of the bottle does say it is "delicately moisturising" and is mild enough for the whole family. All things considered, it's definitely not my favourite of the Cussons Limited Editions - I far prefer the delicate Japanese-styled one. Definitely not for me.
As I have mentioned before, I like chocolate. I have also taste-tested most of the economy brands on the market (with the possible exception of Aldi) and, as Morrisons also have a Value Milk Chocolate, I can now say where it comes in my list of likes. The bar itself is packaged in the signature colours of the Value brand - predominantly yellow - with blue on it. You can also buy their cheaper chocolate in either Plain or Fruit and Nut varieties, but I don't really like either of them. Open the wrapper and the chocolate does not look bad - it has a slight oldish tint to it and smells a little bit "dusty". However, for 29p for a 100g when you're strapped for cash, it isn't too bad. When it breaks, it doesn't have the satisfying "snap" that something like Cadbury's Dairy Milk does; possibly because it is much thinner. Breaking off a piece and putting it into my mouth, I would say I was a little underwhelmed. The chocolate had a dusty taste to it, too, but it was not altogether unpleasant. It was a dusty cross between Galaxy and Dairy Milk, and very definitely an acquired taste. I can see no reason why it would not work well in baking, as it does taste more chocolatey than some cooking chocolates I've worked with in the past. This chocolate rates quite far down my personal list of Value tested chocolates behind Sainsbury's, Asda and Lidl. It's good for a quick pick me up or if there isn't much in the kitty, but it's not for me. You get what you pay for, I guess.
Well, what can I say about the Thorntons Sicilian Lemon Mousse bar? Since the individual chocolates came out, I've loved these. I'm glad it comes in a bar now, as one of the dainty little choccies just isn't enough! The bar is part of the "Continental" range from Thorntons and, depending on the offers, is usually sold for about 69p. When these offers are on I only tend to buy one as I don't trust myself to just eat one and leave the others for later. Also available in the "Continental" range are Alpini, Viennese and Cappuccino bars. Basically, it is a white chocolate and lemon mousse, sitting on a delicate milk chocolate truffle. Then, it is coated in more white chocolate and drizzled artistically with more milk chocolate. The effect is quite striking - I particularly like the contrast between the milk and the white chocolate. The scent? It smells sweet, the chocolate is the predominant aroma followed by the lemon. Biting into it, you immediately taste the sweetness of the mousse and then, almost higher up on the palate, you taste the lemon. I think the bar is just the right amount, as I find it almost too sweet towards the end. In the mouth, the milk chocolate comes through last of all as a warm and comforting finale. I would definitely buy this chocolate bar; they are also ideal as little extra presents. They're more of a treat than a lunchbox staple though, due to their price. I would save these for a treat.
