“ Brand: Young's / Type: Fish „
I've had these Youngs chip shop extra large fish fillets for dinner a few times now. I have been really pleased with them as they are very tasty, and make a nice filling meal. ~~ The packaging ~~ Youngs extra large fish fillets come in a bright blue box, with a picture of the sea, and a large picture of the cooked fish on the front. The box even reminds you of the sea side! It has a large 'Youngs' logo on the top, and says "Chip shop, the nations favourite. 2 Extra large fish fillets in a crisp bubbly batter" Yum! ~~ The product ~~ Cooking the fish is really easy. Just place them on a wire rack on a backing tray and cook them in the oven for about 30mins at gas mark 8. The fish fillets are really huge, just like the ones from the chip shop! They are cooked to a lovely golden colour. The batter cooks just perfectly it is bubbly and crispy, and not at all greasy tasting. It is just the right thickness too, and complements the fish well. The fish is really moist and has a lovely delicate flavour. It tastes fresh, and it's a really flaky, pure white piece of fish. The fish is really thick too, I'd say around 3cms thick, so it makes for a really filling dinner. I always serve this with chips and peas, which always goes down well with everyone! ~~ Ingredients ~~ Alaska pollock, haddock or basa (52%). Coating: (Wheat flour, water, wheat starch, salt, vegetable oil, maize flour, raising agents: disodium diphosphate, sodium bicarbonate; mustard powder, dextrose, flavouring, skimmed milk powder, lactose, spice, Colours: curcumin, paprika extract), sunflower oil (7%), vegetable oil. ~~ Nutritional information ~~ Per cooked fillet: Calories - 330 Sugar - 0.9g Fat - 17.7g Saturated fat - 3.2g Sodium - 1.6g On the front of the box, it says it is made with a sunflower oil blend, which means it contains less than 3% saturated fat! ~~ Price and where to buy ~~ These fish fillets are available to buy in all the major supermarkets. They was recently on offer at Sainsburys at about £2 a box, so I stocked up! But they are usually around the £4 - 5 mark for the box of 2 large fillets. ~~ My verdict ~~ These fish fillets make a quick, tasty and filling meal, and I would not hesitate to buy these again. I would recommend these as a good alternative to a take away fish and chip supper.
I brought a box of these Extra Large Cod Fillets from Youngs because they was on special offer and cost £2.99 for 2 fillets, the normal price is £5.00 and I don't think I'd pay that very often for them because you can get fresh cod cheaper than that! I know the price sounds loads for 2 pieces of frozen battered fish but they're massive and not much smaller than a large fish out of my local chippy. Even when they're frozen it looks nice, you can tell that when the batter's cooked it's going to be tasty and you can see the bubbles in the batter straight away. You see it's even better value for money when you cut into because the batter isn't majorly thick on the fish so you're really buying a massive piece of cod instead of just extra batter on the ends to make it look bigger than it is! lol The batter is lovely and crispy, it's got a bit of a greasy taste but you expect that from battered ANYTHING so I can't hold that against this fish! It's not exactly dripping with fat but sometimes you do get the flavour of grease coming through with the batter. The fish is gorgeous. It's long and chunky and has cooked wicked in the oven. The fish stays moist and has got a lovely texture when you eat it, it flakes wicked like fresh fish and I loved getting a big piece of fish on my fork with just a bit of batter.... yummy! I think the batter and fish go perfect together and I deffo think this is as good as fish I get from the chippy, I say that because of the batter being so nice and crunchy because in the chippy by me it's usually too soggy and mega fatty. I had tartare sauce with mine and put salt and vinegar on it too, I had it with chips and the meal was as good as fish and chips from the chippy! I also like that the flavour of the batter isn't too strong because I think that's a problem with frozen fish and it can sometimes overtake the taste of the fish, this doesn't happen with these fillets though because the batter has got a nice light flavour the goes proper nice with the cod. Recommended... delish massive fillets of battered cod that are a bargain on special offer!!!
One evening last week, i had had a particularly long day in the office and certainly didnt feel like cooking much when I got home. Now my husband is usually excellent and will cook food if he is home first. But I knew that there was nothing in the house to eat as we are having a new kitchen fitted and so we are in a bit of a mess. Anyway to cut a long story short, I decided to pop into my local sommerfield. It is not somewhere that I usually shop as i find it a bit more epensive than other supermarkets. However whilst quickly browsing around trying to get inspiration for a quick meal idea I came across these youngs chip shop extra large cod fillets with bubbly batter. These fish portions looked very appaealing on the packaging. They looked of an excellent quality. I also know from previous experience that Youngs fish products are the front runners in taste and only use the freshest of produce. What I was particularly suprised about was the price. Usually a box of these large fish filletscost a reasonable £5.00 but these are currently on offer and are on sale for £2.99. For the quality of the fish I thought that this was an excellent bargain. The packaging reminds me of a seaside chip shop. The bright colours and the chip shop banner emblazoned across the front of the box. The picture of the fish is so fresh and appealing. The batter looks very appealing and is described as being a salt and vinegar batter. There is also basic nutritional value on the front of the box, in order for the consumer to make an informed choice. When purchasing this product. A quick look informed me that each fish fillet containes 309kcal. Which I didnt think was too bad. However there is a staggering 17.6g of fat per portion. I had made up my mind though by this time that we were going to have fish and chips and mushy peas so in my torlley they went. When opening the packaging I was very impressed with the size of the fish fillets. Me and my husband had ine each and the children had one between them. As they were cooking the smell was mouthwateringly good. The fish smelt fresh and reminded me of the smell you get in a chip shop. When cooked the batter on the fish turned a beautiful golden brown. The batter was bubbly and light. Not too thick and stodgy. When cutting through the crispy batter, the white of the fish was very attractive. The taste of the fish was so very fresh. It was totally delicious. I very rarely eat batter as I am not a great lover of it and find it too greasy. However this batter was exceptional and far superior to any batter I have ever tasted from the fish shop. The fish is seasoned to perfection. the slight saltiness is counterbalanced perfectly with the slightly sharp tarteness of the vinegar. The cod itself just melts in the mouth. Its freshness is divine. Its very fleshy and full of delicious melt in your mouth flavour. The batter to fish ratio and complemented each other perfectly. I understand that these fish portions are high in fat content. However I certainly think these are fresher, tastier and healthier than the fish shop take away alternative. I think as part of a healthy balanced diet there is no harm in eating this fish occassionally. I would certainly recommend these fish fillets to anyone who enjoys a nice piece of fish. It truly is delicious and is excellent value for money. I would certainly pay the full £5 for these two fish portions. It is a little epensive but I believe it is worth the extra as the fish and batter are exceptionally good. The reverse side of the box will provide consumers with a comprehensive nutritional value chart, a list of ingredients and allergy advice. There is also cooking instructions and access to the youngs website address. www.youngsseafood.co.uk.
