Birds Eye fish fingers have been an ever present in my freezer since childhood. With chips and peas, with beans, and more importantly on a sandwich, you can't beat them for a quick, easy and decent meal. The packaging is extremely "busy" in terms of all the pictures, colours and information on there. Captain Birdseye is giving a wave from the corner and his claims about these fishfingers are numerous: - Made with 100% fish fillet - irresistably tasty and full of goodness - no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives - empty plates guaranteed - good source of omega 3 fatty acids - good for brain (a daily intake of 250g of DHA contributes to ... brain function) - good for body (protein helps growth & development of kids' bones) - fish comes from responsibly managed fisheries With a list of claims like that, these fishfingers really are the ultimate feel-good food! The box contains 10 frozen fishfingers which are each approx 8x2x1.5 cm and are orange in colour. They can be grilled or cooked in the oven - I always grill, which according to the box should take 12-15 minutes, but mine are done in under 10 minutes every time. They need a few turns throughout the cooking, and during the cooking the batter/crumb does sometimes split and the fish oils bubble out. Despite that, in the main, I get fishfingers which are crunchy texture on the outside with gorgeous piping fish on the inside. One thing that confuses me is that the box is heavy on its pronouncement of 100% fillet fish fingers, yet the ingredients clearly states Alaska Pollock Fillet 58% and there is no mention of any other fish, so I really can't understand how that works... maybe someone can enlighten me?! The only other ingredients listed are Breadcrumb (wheat flour, water, salt, yeast, paprika, turmeric), Batter (wheat flour, water, salt, refined fish oil, starch) and Vegetable oil. A serving of 3 fish fingers provides 185kcal, 11g protein, 17g carbohydrate, 7.9g fat (of which Omega 3 168mg, DHA 88mg, saturates 1.0g, polyunsaturates 4.8g), 0.8g fibre, 0.29g sodium, 45μg iodine.
Recently I have been trying to cut down on my meat consumption. I eat loads of the stuff and so have been dabbling a lot more with fish and one of my weaknesses are fish fingers....must be the kid in me eh?! lol. After having some really lovely fish fingers from Birds Eye lately I diverted my attention to these ones as they are made from Pollock, a fish I wasn't overly familiar with till buying these and the promise of containing Omega Oil 3 so I thought they may give me some essential nutrients. The Packaging: These come in a brightly coloured oblong box and on that box there is a picture of captain Birds Eye on there and a photograph of the fish fingers themselves. We also told that they are 10 Omega 3 Fish Fingers and there is an at a glance nutritional chart shown and then on the back of the box we are told a bit about the product and the ingredients used, allergy advice is listed as well as cooking instructions and a full nutritional chart, the weight of the 10 fish fingers is shown which is 280g and contact details for Birds Eye are given. Nice enough, minimalist packaging this is. The Fish Fingers: Nice and thick looking fish fingers these are with a thickish light brown breadcrumb coating all over and evenly on them. To cook them we are told we can grill, oven bake or fry them and me, well I always grill mine in about 15-20 minutes and its about the same time in the oven however Birds Eye, although tell us that we can fry them but do not encourage this act by giving us any idea of the sort of time we are looking at for doing that. Anyhow grilling them is a healthier option and not too taxing anyway leaving me to simply turn them a couple of times to stop them burning! These taste as lovely as any other Birds Eye fish fingers. Made from Pollock I was a little worried about what they'd taste like but I needn't of worried! The fish is white, not too fishy in flavour and succulent and juicy without being soggy or stodgy. The breadcrumbs are slightly crunchy though not too hard at all, not greasy and simple taste lightly of bread. These to me just taste like fish and breadcrumbs and do not taste seasoned to me which I prefer anyway so I can add my own as I see fit to them. I am now quite a fan of Pollock due to the fact that what's in these is white fish, tastes fresh and has no skin or bones or anything nasty within them at all and so they get a big thumbs up from me! Nutritional Information Per 3 Grilled Fish Fingers: Energy: 185Kcal Fat: 7.8g Saturated Fat: 0.9g Available in all good supermarkets etc costing about £2.09 a box if not on some sort of offer.
Birds Eye Omega 3 Fish Fingers are a great source of omega 3 and they taste delicious too. If you want gorgeous fish but don't want to go to the hassle off making it from sctratch these are a good alternative. Kids love them too. The fish fingers come in a cardboard box with the 'Birds Eye' man / pirate on the front cover. The box is rectangular and sturdy enough but sometimes from my experience it goes a little squished in the freezer. However I do have a lot of food in there! The fish fingers usually come in packs of 24 for about £2.50 at Iceland. I'm also pretty sure you can get packs of 10 and these must be alot cheaper I think this is pretty good value and I usually buy 2 packets and they last a while. Birds Eye claim that their fish fingers are 100% fish fillet and contain Omega 3 along with no added preservitives. Fish is meant to be good for the brain so aswell as being delicious they are healthy too. The fish fingers are really easy to cook either put them in a chip pan for 3-4 minutes or grill them for 15 minutes. You can also put them in the oven for 15 minutes too. Serve with vegetables or chips or even beans and they are totally delicious. I think everyone should have a packet of these in their freezer because they are extremely handy for a quick fix meal and yummy!
I absolutely love fish fingers. Now I know that in reality, they're designed for kids and grown-ups are meant to eat real pieces of fish, and though I do like real fish, I still as an adult really really like fish fingers. But I am very picky about what fish fingers I eat. They do always have to be Birdsye. I have tried supermarket own brand versions before but I found the fish inside was grey and really off putting. The fish inside Birdseye fish fingers you can rely on to be nice and white. These my dad got from Iceland so I don't know the cost. They are very handy to have in the freezer as they are easy to cook, quick to cook, please most people and will go with pretty much anything and with thirty fingers in a box will last for quite a few servings so they are a good standby even if you dont' see them as part of your general menu. They come in long rectangular box with Captain Birdseye on the front and a pile of fish fingers looking tasty and in the background is the sea probably meant to remind us of freshness and so on. There is a big flash on the front informing us it's a new recyclable easy store carton. These are made from 100% fish fillet but until I looked I did not know it was Alaskan pollock inside, I assumed it was cod but clearly it hasn't affected the flavour. As you may guess from the picture of the box, these are full of Omega 3. The fish inside is lovely and white and falls apart when touched with a fork and coated with golden brown breadcrumbs. You can really taste the quality of the fish. They can be grilled, fried or oven baked. In the oven they take about fifteen minutes, I like mine nice and soft. Be careful about overcooking as they go hard and shrivel up and crack, not nice at all. They will go with jacket potatoes or chips with peas or pretty much anything else. Three fish fingers contains 185 calories so although I have four, it's not something that's particularly unlealthy.
Birds Eye Omega 3 Fish Fingers. My hubby works out of town a great deal but whenever he happens to be working locally he will often pop in to the hose to have lunch with me and our pooch, I think its her he misses really!. One of his favourite lunches is a fish finger sandwich with tomato sauce. Now we have both recently been diagnosed with high cholesterol so having a bit of fish for lunch is not a bad idea for us, but I am very choosy now which brand I go for. As I have made mistakes previously. The reason I pick Birds Eye is purely that it is a tried and trusted household name where quality is concerned, and you do see and read of so many companies that will put all sorts of 'rubbish' in their processed foods, that I tend to be very picky when it comes to fish products etc. Birds Eye make their fish fingers with 100% real fish, it is actually Alaska Pollock fillet of fish. Nutrition : These figures are based on an average serving of 3 fish fingers, * Calories = 190 * Sugar = 0.3g * Fat = 8g * Saturates = 0.9g * Salt = 0.6g There are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives in this product. Allergy Information: Contains wheat. When cooked, for health reasons I tend to grill them, they look wonderfully golden in colour and they look nice and thick, not all thin and slushy soft as some of them do. When you bite into these the fish is thick and juicy, and very tasty and the breadcrumb coating on the outside is crusty, crunchy and totally delicious. Sandwiched between two slices of wholemeal bread and just a touch of tomato sauce over them they really do make the most wonderful lunch or snack at any time. These will retail at just about any supermarket for around £1.99 for a packet of 10 fingers and at about £3.94 for a pack of 30. Which when you consider that it is real fish in the product and not mushed up rubbish is good value for money. A pack of 30 will last us quite a long time too as we don't have them every day and as with anything I do tend to buy when they are on offer. Would I recommend these? ...... well yes, I certainly would, they are nutritious, quick and easy to cook and they make a very tasty snack or lunch or even a main meal if you want something light, and my hubby loves them !! I had another lovely weekend with my family, we just stayed in the house and watch some films. As always my little one requested his all time favourite which is the fish finger from birdseye. I actually have enough stock of these because they were previously on offer for just a pound. Captain Birds Eye's 100% fillet omega 3 fish fingers are a meal that kids will love, convenient and nutritious to have because of the extra omega 3 that comes from natural fish oil. They're also free from artificial colour, artificial flavour and artificial preservatives. TASTE It's lovely white fish that is quite soft and succulent with a crispy coating breadcrumb layer which is not oily. It's way different from cheaper brands that almost taste like a re-constituted stuff. They definitely taste better than other fish fingers we have tried. PRICE Tesco £1.00 / special offer originally cost £1.99 It cost between £1.00 and £4.99 depending on the size of packet. The original price is quite expensive compared to other supermarket brands but it definitely worth paying for. INGREDIENTS Alaska Pollock Fillet (63%) [bold], Batter, Breadcrumb, Vegetable Oil. Obviously, they enjoyed it with a chips, all the 20 fish fingers were gone in just few seconds. NUTRITIONAL INFORMATION per 3 fish finger 190 calories 0.3g sugars 8.0g fat 0.9g saturates 0.6g salt It's actually a decent calorie count for a fairly portion for a child. Imagine, 3 fish fingers were only 11% of a 5-10 year old guideline daily amount which on my opinion isn't bad at all. I would highly recommend these especially if you have children. A tastier fish finger that is convenient and easy to cook. Eventhough it's convenience food they're still quite nutritious for kids and can be mixed with other meal you want. A healthier, cheaper and more sustainable alternative. So thumbs up for another quality frozen food from Birdseye.
When I go shopping to Farmfoods I always buy a couple of boxes of Birds Eye Omega 3 Fish Fingers, everyone in our house likes them. My 3 children really like them, even my son who is a really fussy eater. My husband loves to eat them on sandwiches all mashed up with salt and vinegar on. I like them too but I probably eat them less than the rest of the house. When buying fish fingers I think by far the best ones are Birds Eye. I have tried other types but they are never as nice and I always end up going back to buying Birds Eye. I think before I would avoid buying Birds Eye because they are a little expensive compared to other brands but since I have seen them in farmfoods for just £1 I buy them all the time. Birds Eye Omega 3 are even more nutritious than your average fish finger because they have 33% more Omega 3. It is nice to think that even though you are giving your children convenience food that they are still getting something nutritious. There is also no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. The fish fingers are made with 100% fish fillet. You get 10 fish fingers in a box and they are a very quick and easy food to cook. They need to be cooked from frozen either on the grill or in the oven. They take just 15 minutes. In a portion of 3 fish fingers you get: 185 calories 0.3g sugars 8.0g fat 0.9g saturates 0.6g salt Overall I think these fish fingers are great, they taste nicer than any other fish fingers we have ever bought. They are loved by all members of our house. At £1 a box they are cheap, as well as being convenient and easy to cook. I can't say anything bad about them.
I hadn't had fish fingers in years until 3 years ago when I was pregnant with my daughter. I had a major craving (my one and only) for a fish finger sandwich. Not any fish finger sandwich.....a Jamie Oliver style fish finger sandwich!!! Tar tar.....ketchup....freshest of fresh french bread.....mmmmm....unfortunatly I went into labour as my best friend was loading the afore mentioned fish fingers(and hot curry,but that was for that evenings plan...wink wink) into the back of the car! I never got my craving fullfilled on that occasion, but they remained in my freezer to be enjoyed on a later date. They now are always in my fridge. Always Birds eye, always whichever type are on special offer!!!! Today, my children enjoyed a feast of Omega 3 fish fillet fingers, petit pois and mashed sweet potatoes.....wolfed them down. So, to the fish fingers. We had a pack of 10. Both my 2 year old and 3 year old had 3 each. So I needed to cook the whole box, as I can wasily eat the 4 remaining ones in a fresh baked baguette. I tip them onto my baking tray and am greated in fairly orangy looking fish fingers with a fine crumb coating. It doesn't in any way look like breadcrumbs I have ever made at home. Looking at the ingredients, there is nothing sinister here, mearly turmeric and paprika. But it doesn;t look like fresh breadcrumbs which is a shame! To cook, I did them in the oven as advised on the back...they advise the tastiest way is to grill them, but I cannot be bothered to keep an eye on the grill for 12-15 mins. So slammed in the oven it was. Very very hot oven 230, or 210 for fan ovens, this is gas mark 8. 12-15 mins in a pre heated oven from frozen. I lay them in baking parchment so as to get them off nice and easy. When they came out of the oven, they were a much more appealing colour, seem to have lightened in colour. they did have a slight watery-ness oozing from the edges. Again not terribly appealing. Came off the baking parchment very easily, I know they would have stuck to to baking tray as no fat came off them at all. Taste- They are not massivly fishy. They taste like any firm white fish, the coating is crisp, yet has a good amount of it to give it some depth. It is clear that it is made of whole fillets, you can see when you cut into them the ridges of the natural fish, rather than re-constituted stuff that the cheaper varieties are. The fish filled the whole finger, by this I mean not big gaps between the fish and the coating, so not too much water. They turmeric and paprika listed in the ingredients do not come through at all, clearly very little goes a long way in colouring food. The coating is well seasoned and flavoursome. Whats in it? Alaska pollock fillet (58%), breadcrumbs, and batter. The breadcrumb: Wheat flour, water, paprika, salt, yeast, turmeric. The batter: What flour, water, potato starch, salt, refined fish oil. Per 3 fish fingers they contain 190 calories. I paid £1.00 for my packs on special offer. I have checked the current price on Ocado (who price match Tesco) and are £1.96. I wonderful quick and easy lunch. Lovely in sandwiches with tartar sauce and ketchup. A great simple lunch for kids. I tend to put them with sweat or regular potato mash, peas or broccoli. I avoid baked beans unless I'm out of anything fresh as I have a little rule to only give the kids 1 processed product in a meal (thats just me!!!) Buy and enjoy with gusto!
Fish Fingers make a regular appearance in my shopping basket and I always have a box or two in my freezer (both normally open) I tend to stick to Birds Eye when it comes to these as I have tried other brands and tend to find that you don't get as much fish as you do with Birds Eye. I like these because they are a versatile thing to have in - perfect with something for a main meal or served in-between two slices of bread for a lovely fish finger butty. Either way I am a big fan and always look forward to eating them. The Omega apparently comes from the choice of fish, the Alaskan Pollock; a white fish similar to cod and haddock and to me tastes the same. My box of Fish Fingers is the same as the one pictured so no need to describe and I'm sure the vast majority of you will have either heard of Birds Eye or had something from the range. GDA information lists a 3 finger serving as providing: 220kcals 0.7g sugars 13.0g fat 2.2g saturates 0.9g salt There are no artificial flavours, colours or preservatives and allergen advice warns that the product contains Fish, wheat, milk and mustard. Recommended to either be grilled or oven baked for 15 minutes, the fish fingers turn a lovely golden colour and are nice and crispy when you come to take a bite. The fish content is always generous and the flakes of fish are pure white. Birds Eye do state that they only use 100% fillets and you can tell when you break into a finger. Ingredients list the product as containing Fish (49%), Batter and Vegetable oil so no nasties there. As stated, I do rate these very highly; they are a great way to up your intake of fish into your diet without having to spend too much. Price varies for how many you get in a box/bag but for a single box containing 8 or 10 fingers you can expect to pay in the region of £1.50 to £2.00. Usually located in the freezer section of all major supermarkets, they get 5/5 Dooyoo stars from me for their taste and versatility.
I do not usually buy fish fingers but wanted to get some for my son to try so I purchased a pack of Bird s Eye Omega 3. I paid £1.69 for the box which contains 10 fish fingers made with 100% fish fillet (Alaska Pollock). I choose these particular ones as I wanted to give Jake the best quality I could buy in a supermarket. The Fish Fingers are really easy to cook, under the grill or in an oven for 12 - 15 minutes, turning occasionally. The first time I tried them with Jake, I just cooked him one and four for me. While I was waiting for his fish finger to cool I made myself a fish finger buttie. It did not take long after biting into the fish finger to figure out that the fingers are not actually made from a whole fish fillet, but rather from chopped up fillet shaped into fingers. This was actually exactly what I expected so I was not disappointed by this. But I do think that some people may be slightly misled by the '100% fish fillet' on the front of the box. The fish was very soft and succulent and very fresh tasting. The batter and breadcrumb layer was wonderfully crisp and not oily or greasy. Jake seemed to enjoy his fish finger, he fed himself with it. It started off whole but then promptly got squished into little pieces before he ate it (probably 90% of it). It thought that was a good response for his first encounter with a fish finger. He has had them a couple of times since and shown the same reaction so I am pleased that he enjoys them. The fish fingers are listed as 190 calories per 3 fingers, which I think is actually quite a decent calorie count for a fairly decent portion. I had expected them to be more calories. I will definitely be buying fish fingers more often for all the family but will probably look for a cheaper alternative as these are a bit pricey compared to other brands.
I'm not really a massive fish fan, but I have always had a soft spot for Birds Eye Fish Fingers - they go very nicely with chips and beans, and always taste great. Normally, I buy the haddock or cod variety, but last time I was in Tesco I saw that 'Omega 3 Fish Fingers' were on a '2 for £3' offer - so into the basket they went. Cost - - - The regular price of these particular fish fingers in Tesco and Sainsbury's is £1.89 for the ten pack, whereas ASDA sells them 10p cheaper at £1.79. Product Info - - - - - - - - So how are 'Omega 3 Fish Fingers' different from the regular variety? Well, firstly they are made from Alaskan Pollock (hence my title) - a species often described as "the largest remaining source of palatable fish in the world". Cod especially is limited in supply, and from an ecological perspective we should avoid eating it whenever possible. So, from a sustainability perspective, Pollock is a good choice, and is especially high in Omega3 (hence the title of the product). So... we have established that these fishfingers are a planet saving choice, and are also good for you - but how to they taste? Flavour - - - - - If you didn't tell me that I wasn't eating cod or haddock, then I probably wouldn't notice a difference - however, when you stop to consider the flavour, it is apparent that these fish fingers are slightly stronger in taste. Also, the colour of the fish is slightly darker - although that may just be my imagination. The delicious golden breadcrumb is exactly the same as in other Birds Eye fish fingers, so no problems there. On the whole, I was generally impressed with Birds Eye 'Omega 3 Fish Fingers', which would seem to be an acceptable alternative to the cod and haddock varieties. Although they aren't quite as tasty, it is a close run thing, and they are by no means bad. Would I buy them again? - if they are on sale, then yes.
Convenience foods are generally not that good for you but these very easy to prepare fish fingers from Birds Eye are actually quite good for you and very, very tasty. They contain Omega three which is a fish oil that is said to be very good for the brain. They are not too fattening if you oven cook them then a serving of three fish fingers (enough for an adult) has 170 calories and 7g of fat. The fish in them is apparently Alaskan Pollock and it is very nice fish, almost pure white in colour and there is of course no trace of skin or bone in these which is a good thing for me. They are simple to prepare, just turn the oven to 230 °C and stick these in for around 15 - 18 minutes, nearer the 15 if the oven is fan assisted. Everyone I have served these up to has enjoyed them and that is everyone from my very fussy hubby to my equally fussy grandkids. A box of ten from Asda generally costs around £1.75 but they are occasionally on different offers and have recently been down to a pound a box for a short time. They are a great buy whatever the price and one I would definitely recommend!
Bird's Eye Omega 3 Fish Fingers have to be my favourite convenience food for quick meals or lazy days. I think they are great because, although a type of fast foods they are really quite nutritious when it comes down to it and also loved by kids. Quite a new addition to the Bird's Eye Fish Finger range, the Omega 3 fish fingers come in a box of 10 and as the name suggests these ones are high in Omega 3 (a fish oil claimed to boost brain power). A serving of 3 of these fish fingers will provide you with 170 calories, 0.6g of sugar, 7.1g of fat, 1g of which are saturates and 0.7g of sugar. They are made from Alaskan Pollock and are in coated in breadcrumbs. Bird's Eye do claim all their fish fingers are free from artificial colour, artificial flavour and artificial preservatives. They are very easy to prepare either by oven cooking at 230°C or by grilling and turning a couple of times. Both methods usually take between 15 - 18 minutes. Packaging is pretty eye catching with none other than Captain Bird's Eye pictured on the front of the box. They usually cost between £1.00 and £4.99 depending on the size of packet you buy and the kind you buy and, of course, what offers are on in store. ==My Serving Suggestions== I think these are great fish fingers. Great for a quick meal along with chips and a serving of vegetables or just as a snack on a roll. My husband even takes these cold on a roll smothered with tomato sauce to his work for lunch! As far as I can see the claims of 100% fish are pretty genuine, there is nothing worse than cutting into a fish finger and seeing mashed potatoes! You cut into these fish fingers and actually see real fish and they are very tasty. Great for the kids too and I do feel they are getting some goodness from them being a convenience food - not many convenience foods can boast that! I am not a fish lover. I can't stand sea food of any kind with only 3 exceptions - tinned tuna, Battered cod or........Fish fingers! I am really counting the calories at the moment and was looking for a quick and easy alternative for dinner and picked these up in Morrison's - I believe they were on offer at the time -£1 for a box of 10, and only 170 calories per 3 fish fingers. They can be oven cooked, fried or grilled, I tend to either grill them of bake them, primarily due to the calories and also as I found frying them can make them stick to the pan and become soggy and I like them a wee bit crispy. I love em, golden breadcrumbs around white filleted fish, absolutely delicious and, as most people know, Birds Eye do make quality frozen food so I feel it is a name I can trust as. They are great as an evening meal - I have mine with potato wedges - homemade with skins on and baked beans or peas, which provides a low-cal low fat meal, or, I find them a healthier alternative than a bacon or sausage sandwich for breakfast at the weekends - with tons of tomato sauce and if I'm feeling a little hung-over (it has been known!) then covered with melted cheese, this is probably not to everyone's taste!
I'm the only member of the family who likes fish so I don't tend to eat much of it at home as everyone complains about the smell & the cat won't let me eat it in peace. So when I do but fish I try to go for something that is already prepared & ready to cook - I usually go for fish in batter, fishcakes or fish fingers. Fish fingers bring out the kid in me & I love them served with grilled tomatoes, peas/green beans & some sort of potato which makes a fairly quick & healthy meal for one. I've tried buying own-brand fish fingers but, to date, have always been disappointed (unless a kind Dooyooer would like to recommend a good one?!) so I usually stick to Birds Eye. At Iceland this morning (28/10) a box of Birds Eye 10 Omega3 were on offer at half price - £1 - so I couldn't resist buying them at this price. I can give you a 'fresh' opinion as I've had some for lunch to try & warm me up a bit. The box is attractive - good old Captain Birds Eye & half a fish-finger which is actually a good impression of what's inside. There's lots of information provided & it seems a pretty good way of getting some protein as it contains Omega3 in the Alaska Pollock fillet. The nutritional information is clearly stated - I won't bore you with the list, but to me the most important is the following ~ - 3 fingers = 170 calories & 7.3g of fat. The best thing is that they contain 100% fish fillet so you don't get any strange looking bits in the fingers. Birds Eye tell us there are no artificial colourings, flavours or preservatives & is a nutritional source of Omega 3. The product does contain wheat though (in the batter/breadcrumbs) & I know a lot of people have allergies to fish so these may not suit everyone? Clear cooking directions are also given for grilling/ oven-baking or frying. I popped 3 in the oven with grilled tomatoes & a jacket potato & I feel nice & full (& warm) now. The fingers themselves have a good colour & great texture. They are more substantial than cheaper brands & really taste of fish. The outer part of the finger is nice & crisp & the inside is white & flakey but doesn't fall apart - best of all, no grey bits! summary ~ - a substantial good-looking fish finger. - lovely taste of fish which isn't too strong & 'fishy'-smelling. - great texture. - good value. - realtively cheap way of getting protein without too many calories.
