~~~ The Back Story ~~~
Regular readers of my reviews will be aware that our daughter is now three years old, toilet trained and finally sleeping through the night on a regular basis, and that I am finally in a better position reflect on which baby-related products I recommend as near necessities, those that would be "nice to have", and those that one could really do without.
This item is yet another lent to me by a friend, and one that I had no idea existed until I broached the world of expectant parent. I used it from when my daughter was 2 days old until nearly five months of age.
~~~ The product and my thoughts ~~~
Anyone who has breastfed or attempted to do so will recall how difficult it can be to get comfortable and "in position" prior to breastfeeding. This is particularly apparent when a newborn baby is smaller than average.
When Millie was just a few hours old, the nurse midwife advised me that the most important thing about breastfeeding was making sure that I was in a relaxed and comfortable position. We then discovered that I needed four or five pillows for this to be the case.
Thankfully we had this Brest Friend pillow at home, so the husband was duly dispatched to get it. Phew.
The "My Brest Friend" breastfeeding pillow is designed to provide good comfort and excellent support to both the breastfeeding mother and the nursing baby. There are three versions available: original, deluxe and twin & plus size. Ours was the original version.
Imagine a large donut-like foam ring (similar to an inner tyre) that is shaped more like a car parcel shelf at the front, partially scatter-cushion shaped at the back and an opening and closing adjustable belt on one side between the two. Now imagine it covered with lovely removable, washable fabric with a large pocke for tissues and a phone, and an adjustable belt-like section to fit slimmer or larger ladies. Voila. My Brest Friend.
I am convinced that I would not have breastfed Millie for more than a few days if I didn't have this must-have contraption. It really did make all the difference to feeding her. It's simple to put on, similar to a belt. The baby lies on the front shelf section, which places the baby at the perfect height for nursing. The baby can be fed in the traditional manner, with the shelf centred at the front, or alternatively in the rugby ball style by twisting the pillow around to be off centre.
Shhhhh! Don't tell the social and do not do this at home....Millie weighed 5lb when she was born. She was light. I was a naughty mummy in that sometimes I fed her to sleep and then carried her on the parcel shelf (ie while wearing the pillow) to place her in the cot or to go between rooms. Millie always looked so serene sleeping on the pillow after feeding. And this Mummy always felt so comfortable and happy about this.
Highly recommended. An essential item.
