I actually won this as part of a beauty blog giveaway earlier in the year.
It was sealed and unused and I was initially really pleased, but it's not a great mascara to be honest! It certianly is not one that I reach for regularly and I am glad that I didn't buy it.
The average retail price is around £6.50 which is a reasonable price for a drugstore brand of mascara, but considering the quality I think it's quite overpriced and I wouldn't pay that price when there are cheaper/similarly priced mascaras that completely outshine this. Availability wise it's available from Boots and Superdrug as well as a range of websites including ASOS.
The mascara is only available in one colour - black. It comes in a medium sized tube, which is probably one of the most of-putting mascara tubes I've ever seen. Rather than being girly and pretty, it's a bright Shrek shade of green with purple font on the side. The tube has clearly been designed to stand out, and it does! The tube contains 8ml of product and like all mascaras the lid screws off and it has the wand and mascara brush attatched to it.
The wand is an okay length - shorter than I'm used to but not too stubby. The mascara brush however is awful - way too bulky with lots of short, stubby bristles which have quite a bristly and unpleasant texture. You'd think from the size that it'd give good coverage, but it doesn't seem to grip the lashes very well and rather than seperating my lashes and spreading the product evenly it tends to coat a few lashes at once, making them stick together, leaving big gaps in my lashline!
I can soon sort this out with a lash brush, but it's not ideal and it really is a huge disadvantage because it makes it hard to build up and is fiddly. I also struggle to use this on my bottom lashes because of the huge brush. The effect that it gives my lashes is very unimpressive - it lifts and lengthens them noticeabley with a couple of coats, but they look quite odd - you can tell close up that they're coated in mascara because it goes dry and slightly clumpy. The formula is wet and sticky and dries quite quickly but stays sticky. It goes flaky quite quickly and clumps, smudges and fades within a few hours.
Overall I don't recommend this mascara. I give it one out of five stars.
I wear mascara a lot, rarely go to the shops without some on and am always trying new brands and products in search of the illusive product that makes your lashes look any different to any other brand ever tried. So far in this quest I have failed miserably but I will not be beaten....
Next in line for the trial was the Rimmel Max Bold Curves. This is a product in need of a little attention. It is a line green container that can be spotted from across a shop, with bright pink writing, maybe trying to compensate for something I wonder? There is a picture on the front of the brush showing how curved it is. Once I had unscrewed the lid and removed the wand, I noticed straightaway that it is in fact very curved and the brush is much thicker than your average run of the mill brush. On removing the brush, there is also a huge build up of excess mascara collected over the brush, I scraped this off on the end of the bottle and due to the curved shape of the brush, one sweep of the wand is enough to cover your lashes entirely. This I like as one sweep is so much easier than numerous sweeps to cover the whole lash line. I did try adding another sweep and it looked like I was 12 and not used to how to apply makeup. I quickly removed that attempt; and I am pleased to say that it did come off easily enough though which is a good.
Although I like the one swipe application, I am not happy with the amount of mascara that is caked onto the wand each time you take it out of the casing. You cannot use it with that much on it, I do not know if the neck of the tube is not small enough so it removes this for you like normal mascaras. I wouldn't say this was a huge success, it didn't make my lashes look any different to normal, it just took less time to apply, I guess they can have four stars for that at least.
I bought this mascara for £6.99 after being pleased with alternate Rimmel mascaras. I like quite thick, curled lashes so thought this would be perfect for me - and I wasn't wrong!
The mascara tube is a little garish in a bright green shade with purple lettering. I'm sure younger teenagers would love the packaging as it's fun, bold and bright. The applicator wand is attached to the lid like virtually all other mascaras. The wand itself is very curved to match the curve of your eye from corner to corner. I quite like this is as it nearly reaches all your lashes, however as I have quite long, almond eyes I found it didn't 'fit' my eyes properly so i had to do two strokes anyway. The wand is quite thick which provides you wish a greater amount on your lashes with one stroke which creates fuller looking lashes.
DOES IT WORK?
YES! The mascara is jet black and with a little manouvering, reaches all my lashes. I did have to be careful near the corners of my eyes however as the brush is tricky to use when focusing on one small area (as it is designed to be used in strokes for entire breadth of your lashes). My lashes were well coated, slightly lifted and lightly curled. I did however find the mascara clumped a little when I began trying to coat all my lashes as the layers incidently built up.
DOES IT LAST?
My mascara lasted all day with no need for touch ups. I did have a small shadow under my eyes when I got home at 5pm (after applying at 8am that morning), and a few flakes of mascara underneath both my eyes which I did expect due to the price of the product.
I would recommend curling your lashes prior to using this mascara.
I would also recommend doing only a couple of strokes of mascara as it clumps quite easily.
When it comes to mascara, I just want one that darkens my lashes, makes them look good (I'm not fussed if this means 'lengthens', 'fattens' or 'curves'!) and doesn't clump. Simple. I've tried many varieties and have had varying results. My latest purchase was Rimmel's The Max Bold Curves.
The mascara comes in a green tube with pink writing - the colours certainly grab your attention! The tube is quite fat and fits nicely in the palm of your hand. The mascara is just available in a black shade and is said to give 'full volume without clumping' - giving 'extreme volume and lift'. I purchased this for £6.69 in Boots, a price that puts it about mid-range for a mascara, which I think is a fairly good place to be - not too cheap but not so expensive that I would regret the purchase if not 100% satisfied.
The wand to apply the mascara is, as always, placed inside the lid. The wand is a decent length and the brush is curved. There are also a lot of bristles on the brush, meaning that one 'dip' into the mascara removes quite a decent amount of mascara for application. Application is not fiddly at all as the length of the brush means that you don't have to be too careful of brushing your nose with black colour when applying in the corners. The mascara transfers well onto the lashes and darkens them well. After one coat, I can see that my lashes are lengthened slightly with a slight improvement in volume. They also look more curved and this shape really holds well throughout the day. I usually only apply one coat of mascara as I am worried about looking too made-up or getting panda eyes as the day wears on and one coat of this particular mascara is plenty enough to emphasise them. I wouldn't say that there is anywhere near the increase in volume (meant to be 14 times!) advertised but the 70% lift is probably achieved. I am really pleased with the lift that this mascara provides.
The mascara lasts really well throughout the day and, whilst not especially waterproof, doesn't run or flake. On the odd occasion where I have applied more than one coat, I have experienced a little flaking throughout the day. Applying two coats does thicken the lashes more and give a more dramatic look, but the lashes do begin to look as if they are clumping together. I have not experienced any clumping when applying just one coat.
In summary, this is a good mascara that does thicken and lengthen lashes. I apply one coat each day and the mascara lasted 8 weeks - I think that this represents pretty good value for money. The mascara holds the lashes in a nice curve which lasts all day. It is not a dramatic look like I had expected but I would definitely buy this again.
I have been told that my eye's are my best feature, I honestly can't agree with that but I do agree that I am lucky that I have been blessed with fantastically thick and long eye lashes, that only need a quick slick of mascara to make them really "pop" when I am made up.
This being the case I tend to go for darker mascara's, but have never really bothered with all the promises of "lengthened this" and "more volume that", though I can hardly walk past a bargain, so when I saw this on offer for no less than half it's usually RRP, it would have been daft not to!
This particular brand is not new to me, and I have had varying degree's of success with there many different products available, but thankfully very few problems with mascara's, they either work or they don't!
This product not only boasts extreme volume, but also there biggest curve ever, so in reality this means that after a couple of coats of this stuff I should resemble some sort of drag queen....I decided slow was the way to go with application!
The tube itself is a vibrant green colour, with a picture of the curved brush on it, and low and behold, when I removed the bush from the tube (and wiped away the incredibly excessive amount of mascara of the brush before use), it was curved!
The brush is actually not only curved but also a little thicker in width than some of the mascara wands I have previously used, this did make the application a bit quicker, but also meant that you seemed to have more product on the wand than usual, and for the first couple of days I found that I was forever having to wipe droplets of black from my skin (am I am a messy applicator!).
After one application I found my lashes looked very natural looking, though no thicker or curvier than before application, I tend to use the one stroke method for my work make up.
Any subsequent applications I found that it did go a bit clumpy, so I started to go with the one brush and go with this mascara, and had to get another one for heavier application.
This is a nice enough mascara, that has never irritated my eye's, and is easy enough to take off, but for it's claims of extreme volume and curves I found it didn't live up to it's claims one bit.
Price wise I purchased this for £3.00, but believe it will be available now for around the £5.00 - £6.00 mark.
Thanks for reading x
Trundling through the airport on a recent holiday, the other half was determined that I wouldn't spend any money and so booked a stay at the airport lounge for us.....unfortunately for him I *forgot* my mascara and so obviously had to go and buy one. Mindful of the fact I didn't get paid for 2 weeks and that I did have a lovely free glass of wine waiting for me, I actually ran to boots and picked up the cheapest I could find; which happened to be the Rimmel Volume Flash!
**Packaging and pennies**
Rimmel is a mid level brand and until this purchase I have never before attempted to use their mascara, but this was on offer and VERY eyecatching in a lime green tube!
I bought this for £6.69 at Boots (at Gatwick) and a quick look on the Boots site shows that this is the same price you pay in any Boots store, so no extra savings in the airport! £6.69 was the cheapest that I could see in Boots, so I found it a fairly reasonable price to pay, and wasn't expecting too much from the mascara, as I would had I visitied MAC or Clinique.....
As I said the packaging is very eye catching, no chance of you losing this in your make up bag! Very easy to unscrew the lid and when you pull the wand out there isn't too much product clumped to the brush. The brush is curved, which I presume is to give you the extra volume, I found this a little bit strange having only ever used straight wands before. The bristles are synthetic and large, giving good coverage over your lashes. I also find that as it doesn't hold too much extra product on the end of the wand you don't get a build up around the lid of the product of flaky old mascara, which could make the lid more difficult to take off. I presume the curve on the brush is to give you the curve and volume, though I personally don't see any difference!
**Whats the right colour for me?**
I think it is quite poor that this mascara is only available in "Ultimate Black" - whilst this is fine for me as I have naturally dark lashes and eyebrows, this colour can look too heavy on those with fairer features (in my opinion) and I like mascara to look as though I simply have luscious eyelashes, rather than a bit of extra help!
**Application and staying power**
I find the mascara wand very tricky to use and I am still attempting to master this!! I apply with the curved side up (like the letter n rather than the letter u) and simply sweep from the bottom of my lashes to the top of my lashes. This work quite well on my right eye - NOTE I am right handed - but on my left eye I find this much trickier with my nose getting in the way.
The mascara goes on well, without clumping, so I have individual lashes rather than 4 or 5 spikes. However I do find this very wet and more often than not have to start my mascara again as I have smudged it over or under my eye whilst it is not properly dry.
Once dry I have no problems at all with the staying power of this mascara, it has been left standing at the end of an impromptu night out after originally being applied before work - 16 hours earlier!
As I said the staying power is very good, even when trying to remove! I am having to use a couple of make up wipes, and really rub at my eye to remove this mascara, followed with washing my face, and still sometimes I wake up with mascara under my eyes and on my pillow. Not good for a) sensitive eye areas and b) white pillowcases
**Would I recommend?**
I would for the mascara itself, but not for the packaging - I simply cannot get to grips with the brush, I don't find that the brush adds any extra volume or curve....its not the worst mascara I've ever owned and I won't be rushing to buy a new one so only 3 out of 5 stars!
I love Rimmel products. I always trust them to be of 100% quality. I go for Rimmel for all types of make up and not just mascara. The first thing I noticed when I saw this mascara was the packaging and bright green colour of the mascara tube. Bold in name, bold in nature!!
The mascara was definitely bold! I wore it firstly on a night out, putting two coats on my top lashes and boy did I notice a difference. My lashes looked like id glued on fake ones. It was even a cheap option instead of buying fake eyelashes. They doubled to at least twice their size and looked long and luscious. No clumps of mascaras stuck to them and all separated rather than stuck together. I didn't put some on my bottom lashes as I usually don't and especially with this type of mascara where your lashes instantly llok glam, I thought putting them on my bottom ones would look outrageous and a tad cheap. Not that putting mascara on your bottom lashes is cheap...but one this bold would definitely look crazy and over the top.
It lasts all day and night too which is a huge bonus as you don't need to bring it in the bag and top up every few hours. I put it on at 5pm for a night out and it didn't come off at all until I took it off at around 4.30 am. This wasnt a first off either as I have worn it numerous times since and it always lasts all night / day. It wouldn't be for everyday wear but rather for occasions. The tube lasted me ages, I wore it at least once a week and got around six months out of it. Good purchase for occasion wear.
"I want a mascara that instantly gives me exponential full volume and lift without clumping!"
Rimmels Mac Bold Curve promises to deliver full volume and lift to your eyelashes, sounds like a great mascara so why dont I give it a little try?
I went into Boots and picked this up for £7.00 I think..was a good while back.
I thought the money was well spent as the mascara claimed to do just what I wanted plus I had lots of extra money coming in at the time so didn't see the harm.
I liked the packaging, reminds me of the chocolate lime sweets for some reason!
The mascara tube is a bright lime green colour, its very shiny.
Over the front is the Rimmel logo, the name of the mascara and some more information on the mascara itself.
Opening up the brush is black and the brush is slightly curved, and has lots of bristles which look like they would do a great job at separating and lengthening.
Over all, the mascara got a thumbs up on appearance from me.
In the tube you get 8ml of mascara and I picked up the colour black, not sure if it is available in any other shades.
The mascara is easy enough to open and I found it didn't have a smell too it.
I noticed when pulling up the brush it did have a tad excess on but I put this down to it being the first use because it only seemed to happen about 3 times and then didn't happen again.
The brush is different to ones I have used, I have used curved brushes before but this one just had a sleight more bend to it.
My eyelashes are quite long naturally but do clump together, even without mascara on, its started getting worse within the last year so having a mascara which claimed no clumpiness and lift sounded good.
The mascara wand holds well in my hand without being to uncomfortable and also because of the angle of it, it goes under my eye nicely and I find thats what lift up my eyelashes.
I did find the brush curves my eyelashes, gives them lots of colour, separates and really defines them.
It was fast drying, sometimes with other mascaras I notice they can take forever to dry and you cant blink other wise it ends up all down your eyes.
The mascara is a good mascara and did make my eyes stand out. Although it is not my favourite I would use it again as it did a nice job.
For someone who hates buying new mascara (they never live up to their promises) this Rimmel one was quite a nice suprise, slightly obnoxious looking (lime green and bright pink??) but atleast it's easy to find in my makeup bag. The formula is glossy and smooth and is very very black (always important) it gives nice curl and volume and if you're careful you can build up some decent length - I say careful as apply more then two coats and you'll get mass amount of clumps! I found the formula is a tad on the wet side and took a while to fry (careful on the lower lashes!) and a lash comb is a good idea to have on hand if you do over apply (the brush holds a lot of mascara) the formula had minimal flaking and no smuding when worn all day. It's not my 'holy grail' of mascaras in any sense of the phrase but I did enjoy using it and would say this is one of the better high street mascaras (unless your keen on the dryer max factor-esque formulas that I can't stand!)
I am always searching for mascaras to make my lashes look longer and thickerand this one does just that, with the added curve too! I am a fan of Rimmel's volume Flash Mascaras already so when I saw this one pop up in Superdrug, I felt I needed to try it.
As with the other Volume Flash Max versions, it does make my eyelashes much bigger without clumping. Also, you don't have to put on lots of coats either, so makes it better value for money! I always feel my lashes look a bit flat, which is why I like to go for volumising mascaras, and not one for curling. Normally you get one or the other, but this one does both, and really opens my eyes.
It is also a very affordable price, putting the other expensive, over-priced mascaras to shame as Rimmel manage to do everything with one mascara and make it affordable!
One I will be re-buying
I bought this mascara a while ago, as I wanted one which would give me good length, a nice curve, and definition. I saw this one in Superdrug for a pretty reasonable price, and I love most products I have bought from Rimmel so trust the brand, so I thought I'd give it a go.
I really like this mascara and I think that it is great for day to day use. The colour is quite a dramatic black which makes the product much more noticeable and it defines my eyes really nicely.
I did have to use an eye lash curler before I used this product as it added to the length, but it does hold the length well, and made my eyelashes look both thicker and longer.
The product once applied lasted me well through out the day, and I didn't have to reapply it once. It doesn't last me as well on a night out though, and smudged a little.
Mine didn't dry out at all before I finished it, and it did last me quite a long time.
My mum got me this after a trip to Boots, whenever she goes out she always brings me a little something back as she's the best!
The claim - Rimmel Volume Flash The Max Bold Curves Mascara gives you extreme volume and lift.
This costs £6.69 in Boots for a 8ml tube. I think the price is very good, seeing as most of Rimmels products are very reasonable for the quality. This is the best designed mascara I've yet to see! The colour of the tube is like a bright lime green with a shiny effect to it, with fuchsia pink bold writing. The tube is rounded with a black bottom and pointed lid, the tube is quite chunky! It looks incredible! It is only available in one colour which is black. The design on the brush itself is curved, which is what is supposed to give you the nice curled lash effect.. the brush is quite small in my opinion, which I think is very nice due to the fact you can reach all your lashes easily without worry of smudging.
My eye lashes are naturally long and quite curved, but I always want that extra curved and bold effect to my eye lashes so my eyes look really defined. I really like this mascara as it gives great separation and thickness to lashes whilst curling them at the same time. The chunkiness of the tube is very handy and feels like you have that little bit more control over the brush when handling. The brush itself is very nice and I was really surprised with how good the results were, it evenly coated my lashes, went on smoothly without any clumps and gave amazing definition and curled my lashes very well! No need for an eyelash curler, now I have one within my mascara, which in the long run saves a lot of time and effort!
Usually with some of the mascaras I have tried, the effects they give don't always last all day like you need them too, sometimes it flakes off or smudges which can be a real pain as sometimes you don't realise its on your face. With this the effects last all days without any flaking or smudging and another bonus its so easy to take off, with this mascara I believed that because you have to apply more to get the effect you want and it stays on for so long, it must be a real pain to remove. I used my simple eye make-up remover and cotton wool pads, it came off effortlessly and quickly without any hard rubbing or irritation. Now that's what I call a decent mascara!
The only downside is that the mascara looks quite wet and doesn't pick up as much out of the tube, so you do have to apply a few coats
Overall a product I will be buying again, the effects that truly last all day and so easy to use.. all for a bargain! I definitely would recommend this product, even if you have to apply a few coats, its all worth it!
I noticed recently that I had run out of one of my make-up bag essentials, mascara. I hate being wihout it and although I dont always wear a lot of make - up at once, I have to always put some mascara on before going out as it makes me look and feel a lot better. I went to my local chemist and ended up purchasing Rimmel The Max Bold Curves Mascara. The main thing that made me want to buy it was the fact that it was so eyecatching. The mascara comes in a bright green tube with pink lettering on the outside and it stood out a lot more to me than other mascaras did.
The mascara was in black which is the shade I always look for as I like my eyelashes looking nice and dark and with a wow factor. When I first went to use this mascara I noticed how small the brush was. In my opinion, this is not a bad thing as it was quite easy to hold in my hand and control so that I could avoid getting mascara under my eyes on my skin.
The mascara was really black and when I first used it, I noticed that it felt really wet on my lashes and took ten or fifteen seconds to dry. This didnt bother me as I thought the mascara itself was fantastic, it didnt appear to clump with was good but most of all I loved the effect it had on my lashes. It left them really thick and long looking with a lovely curve. It almost gave my lashes a false lash effect and was really pleased with the lovely curve of my lashes which is what I had been looking for.
This mascara definitely gave me the wow factor and made my eyes just seem to pop. It really opened my eyes up and highlighted them well. This mascara cost me around £6 and I think this is a brilliant price compared to some other mascaras which have been more expensive than this and not performed as well either. This mascara has collagen and keratin in it which is maybe what makes my eyelashes look so good.
I didnt have a problem removing my mascara at the end of the day, it came of easily with a few wipes of my eye make - up remover and didnt sting my eyes at all which has happened with other mascaras that I have used in the past.
This mascara looks great in my make - up bag and it makes me feel good using it as it is so colourful. It lasts for ages too as I have had mine for a few months and used it every day and it has still not run it. I would definitely recommend this mascara to everyone as it is very impressive, looks great and doesnt sting or irritate my sensitive eyes. Available in most good chemists and supermarkets.
For me, it is most important that a mascara is affordable, easy to apply and lengthens, curls and thickens my lashes.
I already have loads of mascaras in my makeup box but they're all really old and drying out, and I could never be bothered to chuck them out.
But a few months ago I decided to chuck away all my makeup that was finished or dried out, and I gave away the makeup which I never used and was still in good condition. I went on a mission to buy a whole new set of makeup for myself.
I bought myself two mascaras, one of which was the Rimmel London The Max Bold Curves mascara.
It comes in a striking, eye-catching lime green tube, with bold pink words saying 'Big, bold lashes in a flash!'.
It was very hard to ignore the mascara as it was the first thing on the shelf that caught my eye.
The proprietary formula, enriched with collagen and keratin is paired with Rimmel's most curvaceous brush ever. Together they take lashes to stunning new extremes of volume and curve. Lashes are BIG, fat, boldly lifted - and completely free of clumps, of course.
But this is my opinion:
When I got home and opened the mascara I was a bit concerned about the brush. It's a curved brush and I wasn't sure about a couple of things: which side to use when applying the mascara, and whether it would actually coat my lashes properly.
When I put on the first coat of mascara I thought 'WOW!' My lashes were already quite thick, long and curled. I applied a second coat and my eyelashes were so spidery and long, just the way I liked them. I knew this was going to be a mascara I would always always use and never EVER give away.
I use mascara most days and always get compliments on how long and thick my eye lashes are, so my mascara is very important to me and I am particular about having the right product. However, having said that, I firmly believe you do not need to spend much on mascara to achieve good results, it's not all about having the most expensive brand. Rimmel is excellent value for money, and I do try other products when on offer, but ALWAYS come back to Rimmel and have done for about 10 years.
Having said that, this is not their best mascara. The wand isn't great, I find it a little small. It is curved, which does help curl your lashes, but takes a little getting used to if you normally use mascara with straight wands. It is not waterproof, but it doesn't smudge and resists the odd tear or getting caught in the rain. I find it perfectly acceptable for use if you are not planning to go swimming in it. It lasts well all day.
It didn't last as long as others i've had, but it is up to the usual reliable Rimmel standard in terms of doing a good job. I never feel you can go too wrong with a Rimmel mascara and recommend this one along with all their others as a good value for money. Will buy again.
