An shiny smooth looking gloss but it is too sticky for me

I was sucked into buying a NYC Liquid Lipshine gloss on one of Superdrug's 3 for 2 make up sales. I have let it sit in my make up bag for a while as I had others to use up and I wear more lipstick than gloss. I do think gloss looks nice with more minimal make up that I wear in the summer so I decided to give it a try. I got this as my free item, otherwise it would have cost just £2.99 for 7.2ml.

The gloss comes in a mascara like tube with a black lid and a bottom part that shows the colour of the gloss- but see below. There is nothing fancy about the packaging but it doesn't look as cheap as it actually is and won't disgrace itself in your make up bag! The brush attached to the lid is basic but functional too. It has an applicator that looks like it is covered in bristles, which thankfully feel soft and sponge like when you are actually using it. I would have liked this end bit to be a bit contoured at the tip rather than rounded to make putting on the gloss a bit more accurate but I can live with it.

The Lipshine is supposed to be non sticky and to contain "multi dimensional pigments" to create a highly glossy finish. I agree with only one of those claims as I will explain.

I didn't spend long choosing my gloss as my other half was getting a bit restless but I opted for what I thought was a dark pink. I was surprised on getting home to find the gloss that I had bought was called Rockefeller Red, as it really does look more pink in the tube to me. The pictures shown by Superdrug online do make it look almost poppy red. However if that was the colour you wanted, you would have been disappointed. The first coating on the lips makes gives a dark pink shine but a second layer is really needed to build to something like a red. It never gets really bright though. I actually prefer it as it is because I think it is more subtle and versatile that way but of course it depends on what look you are after. If a reddish pink is not for you, there are at least 9 other colours to choose from.

The gloss feels a bit thick in the tube but the applicator picks it up well and it goes on surprisingly smoothly. The colour pigment seems poor unless you apply a second layer but I try and use just the one because that is sticky enough. You can't bring your lips together without finding the feeling there very "tacky". Two coats makes this worse and the gloss feels not exactly light on the lips. So I have to choose between a stronger colour and feeling a little less sticky. I tend to go for the former, as I like the paler look and the colour is at least fairly even if weak. My lips feel that I have applied Vaseline to them in a heavy handed way so I feel self conscious of them the whole time the gloss is there.

This is where the Lipshine does perform well as it really is glossy. I wouldn't say the results were over and above other products that claim to give a shiny finish, but I probably expected it to be less good because of the low price. The shine doesn't fade before the colour, but sadly the latter doesn't last for hours. I would say a couple would be about average and it is fatal to eat or drink. I also feel that I am in danger of adhering to my coffee mug! I did like the fact that although my lips had felt dry on occasion during the time I used this, applying the gloss didn't make that worse. Sometimes glosses do seem to highlight the fact my lips don't look as hydrated as normal, but this one made them appear lovely and smooth.

The other good point about this is the fact it has a lovely smell. I usually prefer unscented products because the perfumes they tend to add can get a bit sickly sweet for me. This scent is sweet but not overpoweringly so. It reminds me of caramelised fruit, and is likely to make me feel hungry if anything! It doesn't have an obvious taste.

I wouldn't recommend this if you wanted a non sticky gloss. if you can put up with the sticky stuff and frequent application, and want a low cost shiny gloss with a nice selection of colour to choose from, it may be worth trying this. I would go for one with a better pigment unless you are built of strong stuff when it comes to stickiness though.

Available at Superdrug, and from online sellers.

        Lip gloss

        Nyc liquid lipshine

I was recently shopping for make up bits and pieces and given that Superdrug was offering a buy two get one free offer, decided to just buy several items I had never tried before.

I am the world's worst for losing make up and so never want to spend a lot of money on products which I will probably use so this product costing £2.99 seemed good value.

The lip gloss is available in 14 different shades, mostly quite muted looking and nothing too bright. I chose the Rivington Rose colour which when looked at through the tube looks like a very muted pink but not sickly or pale, and it looks like it has a very slight shine.

The packaging is completely inoffensive, just a clear bottle through which I can see the lip gloss. The tube has all of the information and instructions on the back and the name of the product on the front. It's not especially classy looking but neither is it nasty looking; a middle of the road lip gloss packaging.

It comes in a 7.2ml tube with a screw on/off lid and when I open it, the applicator is like a little flat sponge. This I prefer to the products whereby I have to dip my finger into the tub to get the lip gloss out. The sponge itself is nice and soft and a good size for applying the product to the lips, being not too big or too small; and with just taking the wand out of the tube and giving the tube a squeeze I can apply sufficient lip gloss with one application. The only thing I didn't like is the fact that when I pull out the sponge, some of the lip gloss is left hanging off the sponge and it looks a bit stringy.

When I apply the lip gloss it does go on nice and smoothly and gives nice coverage. The colour as expected is muted and although there is a very slight shimmer, it's not too obvious and is subtle enough that I can wear the lip gloss for work through the day. It does give a nice glossy sheen to my lips but is not an obvious colour but rather just gives my lips a bit of a shine. The lip gloss is slightly sticky when first applied although it does make my lips feel slightly moisturised. The lip gloss doesn't need to be removed with any type of make up remover because it doesn't last overly long. It actually lasts until I have a drink and then seems to come off onto the cup; thankfully its not a bright colour so I don't leave stains on the cup!

For the money the lip gloss is decent enough. It does make my lips feel slightly more moisturised than when I wear no lip gloss and gives my lips a nice sheen which works for day or night wear. It's a bit sticky and not very long lasting but if like me you just like to have a lip gloss handy then this is good value for money.

        Thanks for reading

        Daniela xx
