I'm slightly obsessive with nail varnish and not having time to pamper myself that often, I always like to have nice nails if I can. I have favourite nail varnish brands and look out for them on offer where I can. It's always nice to treat myself and feel like I am treating myself if I spend a little more and buy Nails Inc. Up until about a year ago I would spend the RRP every now and then and buy a bottle of Nails Inc for around £11. That was until I discovered they are always for sale in TK Maxx in box sets for around £14 for 3 bottles. I was happy when recently I noticed for sale a box containing 3 special effects varnishes from Nails Inc for £14. I hadn't seen the special effects range previous to this and was happy that I was able to give them a try for such a bargain price.
I had previously used the Barry M equivalent of the special effects nail varnishes and only had my experience of this to compare the Nails Inc ones too. I had enjoyed the results with the Barry M one but found the results didn't last as long as I would have liked and the effects while different, looked like they had been done at home. It's difficult to describe why I think the two look different, but the Nails Inc special effects give a much more professional finish with a crisp finish, and one that lasts.
To gain the best finish from these varnishes, you really do need to put a little time to one side and really concentrate on getting the finish right. I paint a contrasting colour on top of a clear base coat, allow to dry fully and then apply the special effect glaze on top. This gives a kind of shattered glass effect and when cracked will show the contrasting colour underneath. The finish really is fantastic and I find that it looks fab if you are really dressed up, giving something a bit different to the standard block colour that we have all been used to. The fact that it is so obtainable at home, and other than a little time is so easy to get the look.
As opposed to the black Barry M crackle effect that I had been using, the colours available within the Nails Inc range are striking and very colourful. The ones that I have and were included in the set (which I still see for sale in TK Maxx) are a gold, a blue and a lovely purple which is my favourite. To get the best look I would suggest that you go for a lighter shade underneath the special effect colour you intend to use. I did on a few occasions go for colours which were darker underneath but it just didn't look right so I have stuck to what goes best and that's a lighter shade underneath.
I have absolutely no idea how the product actually works (I would love to know!), and it really is quite amazing to just sit and watch it separate on your nail bed. Quite special (effects!). As with all Nails Inc varnishes, I find application so easy. The brushes are the perfect width and length and seem to cover the nail perfectly (and evenly which is so important). There is nothing worse than a gloopy varnish applying to the nail as the effect is quite clearly an 'at home' job, but Nails Inc applies so well and doesn't run on to the nail, but applies just as it were if you were getting them done by a professional nail technician.
I have found that all Nails Inc varnishes have excellent lasting power, but with the special effect varnishes, you seem to gain extra wear out of them due to the effect as if it does slightly chip on the edges it isn't noticeable, giving you a few extra days wear. I can happily gain 4 or 5 days use out of these particular bottles when they have been applied. This obviously requires you applying a decent top coat on the varnish after application. When you have had enough of the colour, it does remove easily with a usual nail varnish remover.
An excellent effect and one that I will continue to use and hopefully buy more colours from the range.
I love being creative with my nails and I already have a few crackle/croc/snake effect nail polishes but I also have room for some more! I decided to give Nails Inc Special Effects Crackle Top Coat.
What does the product do?
The product has been designed to give your nails that extra special look. When combined with another polish, this product crackles to show the colour underneath and leaves a shattered effect on the nails. It promises to create amazing nail art with minimal effort.
There are plenty of shades available and most of bright and vibrant shades. They range from pinks to reds and silvers to greens. They come with interesting names based on London like Camden, Brixton, The West End and Hackney. I chose Farrington which is a beautiful glitter gold shade and I love it! It's perfect for Christmas time.
How do you use the product?
You need to apply a base colour which is lighter than the top coat. With gold this was a bit tricky but the Nails Inc representative recommended a pale blue so I went with it. Once that coat is dry, you apply the Crackle Top Coat over the top and then just leave it to dry. Before your eyes the gold glitter cracks and separates as if by magic leaving your nails with a gorgeous but simple pattern that looks different every time.
Packaging and Price
The product comes contained within a normal glass nail polish pot which is transparent and you can see the product inside clearly in all its glittering glory. It has a metallic silver screw top lid and the brush is attached to the lid in the usual way. The product will cost you around £10 and it can be bought from stores such as Debenhams and also from a variety of online websites.
Application and Performance
The consistency of this polish is really thick as it is literally packed full of glitter. You can just about cover one nail with the amount on the brush but sometimes you need a bit extra but then the product dries at a slightly different speed which isn't what you want. As the top coat is so thick it takes a bit longer to dry that others I've used to so you do need a bit of time to create the look. If it isn't completely dry, it will smudge and ruin the look. It doesn't chip and the look stays put for about three days but after that it does start to look a bit tatty.
It starts to separate before your eyes into a nice pattern and it looks really effective. Due to the glitter, the top coat is slight raised so it doesn't look as professional as the non glitter ones which I have used but I still like it. It is quite a dramatic look that is perfect for a night out but it's a bit full on for the day. When you want to remove the product, it comes off with the average polish remover but you will find tiny particles of glitter around your nails for a while!
All in all, this is a lovely crackle effect polish for Christmas time. The shade I chose isn't the easiest to use or the most effective but it's great for the magpies among us. The product itself is of a high quality and I will continue to use it. I can't wait to try out some of the non glitter colours too!
