Great mascara, shame about the wand

I bought a plain black MUA mascara about ten months back from Superdrug. I paid two pounds for this and though it wasn''t advertised as being smudge proof, I can vouch for the fact that this one stayed in place all day long and I didn''t get any of those awful flaky black bits underneath my eyes by the end of the day. This Is a very basic black mascara and I bought it because it was inexpensive and it was also recommended in Woman magazine. The thing I really disliked about this mascara was the size and the shape of the wand It was absolutely huge and personally speaking , i found that this was no good for me as I have fairly thin and sparse eyelashes anyway, it was very difficult for me to actually get the wand to find the tiny lashes i have in the inner and outer corners of my eyes. The wand did not bcomeoverladed with mascara, however, so this was a plus point and it died fairly quickly. It both lengthened and thickened my lashes well and was easy to remove with most wispes at the end of the day. However, it definitely loses marks for the stupid size of the brush.

a well priced basic mascara from Superdrug

One thing I cannot be without is a decent mascara because I have very fair eyelashes which, when uncoated, make me look as if I don't possess any at all. I have experimented over the years and must have tried all the leading brands plus lesser known makes and my latest buy was this MUA mascara from Superdrug which was priced at just £2. Luckily they have their cosmetics on 3-for-2 at the moment so I ended up buying a couple more items from this range.

The Extreme volume mascara is 7ml and came sealed in a tight cellophane wrapper with a 'new' round sticker on the front and a huge bar code on the back which, I have to say, is easier to read than the ingredients list which is impossible for me to read!

The mascara casing is fairly thick and the actual wand is a good size meaning that it is easy to apply without it touching the cheeks or other areas of the face. The brush is fairly bushy and it thicker at one end so I can easily reach both the smaller lashes nearest to the nose plus the longer ones with very little effort.

It coats well - I chose black- so I can tell which lashes I have missed. I firstly apply just to add definition to my lashes then a second one to make them more volumised and find it works well for me. I tend to have quite sensitive eyes but have not experienced any irritation since using this product.

It stays in place all day without smudging or 'disappearing' yet is easily removed with eye make-up remover. I am not sure whether or not it is waterproof as I have not put this to the test but it does seem to have staying power.

I think for the price this MUA mascara is pretty good value if you just want a basic one that does not promise the earth and you just need one for everyday use. I am awarding 5 stars as,although it may not be for everyone, it does tick all my boxes.

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

Good for everyday but not for nights out

Mascara is the one piece of make up I would never even contemplate leaving the house without wearing, so it is fair to say I go through quite a lot of the stuff. Its not very often that I buy the same mascara each time as I like to mix things up and try different products and styles. Whilst shopping in Superdrug a few weeks back I noticed the MUA range, having never tried anything by them before I decided to give some of their items a go. I decided to try one of their mascaras, I chose the darkest shade - black 5. As the mascara was priced at just £1 I was a little dubious over its quality but I hoped it would be decent enough for everyday use.

MUA's mascara comes in a simple plain looking 5.0ml tube which is black in colour, the brand and product name are given in silver lettering along the side. A sticker gives some general information including ingredients and a use by date of six months. As with most mascaras the lid screws of to reveal the application brush.

The brush itself is long but rather basic looking, there are plenty of bristles but they are quite small in length. Each time I pull the brush from the tube the end of it is a little clogged with mascara and I have to wipe it to remove this unwanted excess.

I apply the mascara to my lashes as I would with any similar product. It goes on really easy and coats the lashes well. I found the long brush brilliant for those lower lashes. The mascara does not give a dramatic lengthening look, but then MUA never promise that it would. This particular MUA mascara I bought is not waterproof but it still stays in place well, I am pleased to say that I have not experienced any smudging or running. I tend to remove my make up with facial wipes, the mascara comes off pretty easy and there is no need for any vigorous wiping.

This really is the basic everyday mascara as I initially thought it would be, its brilliant for wearing on the school run or just popping up the shops, but its certainly not one I would wear for a night out or on special occasion.

Overall this is a decent little mascara at a great price. Those who like extravagant long lashes would be completely unimpressed with this one, but I believe those looking for a cheap basic everyday mascara will be pleased with MUA's offering.

          Advantages

          Disadvantages

not the best mascara but you get what you pay for I suppose!

I was in superdrug recently, initially for shower gel (which by the way I left without!) and as always got completely side tracked by all the various cosmetic brand counters and ended up treating myself to some make up treats! Money is a bit tight with me saving for christmas and my trip abroad so I bought some lovely primer (which dooyoo doesn't have here for me to review! boo!), nail polish and lipgloss and remembering my MAC mascara was probably coming up to it's sell by date I decided to go on the lower end and buy some mascara that wasn't too expensive to balance out how much I had spent on other products!

It came already wrapped in plastic which as I got home I wanted to try it out so opened it up. The mascara is quite a round chunky cylindrical shape which is black and looks a bit basic with silver lettering up the side that says "MUA MAKEUP ACADEMY MASCARA"....cheap and simple so far! I got black which says on the mascara tube that is shade no.5 but in all honesty I didn't see any other shades when browsing that aisle in superdrug.

So, excited to give it a go I twisted the lid to open it and it was broken! The lid came off in my hand but the wand stayed stuck in the tube. I guess that's the quality I should expect since I only paid a pound really! Quite disappointing and really annoying! So I have to grip the knob on the mascara and pull the wand out myself...great.

The mascara itself isn't anything fantastic, a basic swirl shaped bristle brush which to me seems really thick. Not much mascara liquid actually comes out (except on the tip) and I find I have to apply it by gliding the mascara liquid onto my lashes and then try and comb through them separately to create any type of effect. I have another spare empty mascara brush in my make up kit from another brand and thank goodness I have it as I can try and work a little bit of magic with this mascara so it actually has some use!

I read other good reviews about this mascara so overall I am quite disappointed with mine, even though I did only pay £1! Not so sure I'd recommend it to anyone else unless they are really on a budget, and I think I am going to have to hunt around now for a mascara that does the job for me.

            Do not buy!!

I brought this black MUA mascara about two weeks ago as i have been trying other makeup products from MUA and thought this would be good like the rest of their makeup but sadly i was wrong.

The mascara was sealed but when i undone the seal and opened it up it was all clumpy around the opening which is never a good sign but i thought i would try it anyway and really not to my suprise the mascara was clumpy, it didnt glide onto the eyelashes at all like most mascara's it was just black clump after clump but because i had no other mascara to use for work i wore it anyway. It was flaking all day once it had dried which kept making my eyes itch which no female wants and it also had this funny smell to it!!

I found the brush to be really thick and gooey and on the mascara bottle it does say its waterproof and there is no way in this world that the mascara is waterproof as i learnt when i got caught out in the rain.

I know usually you get what you pay for but this wasnt even worth spending a penny on im glad it only cost a couple of quid because it went straight in the bin.

I definately would NOT recommend to anyone its just not worth wasting your time looking at it, i think MUA need to take a relook at what they are selling!!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

A good mascara for a mega low budget!

I first discovered the MUA range when reading Love it. They did a make-up page where the model had been made up to suit the season or fashion and they always looked really good. The stocklist at the bottom said the products used were the MUA brand which I'd assumed would be expensive as it had been used in a magazine. I looked online and found that it was available at Superdrug, and was really cheap! I originally bought a blusher and eyeshadow that were really good but hadn't seen the mascara.

I got the Mascara on sale at the Merry Hill store. There was a box on the coutner with various MUA products for £1, 3 for 2. I couldn't resist picking up a few items and the mascara was one of them. I didn't really have high expectations as it was so cheap, but the other products from that brand are fantastic so I wasn't sure.

The mascara itself is a good, thick consistancy but isn't clumpy or congealed. The brush was quite soft and had lots of bristles allowing me to cover all of my lashes. I only apply one coat of mascara, brushing the lashes side to side then straight up from root to tip. This mascara is brilliant! My lashes were longer, thicker and darker. It isn't waterproof though, so if your eyes water it doesn't stay put brilliantly. Through the day, it stayed on quite well and getting home in the evening, my eyelashes still looked long and thick. I find that I get a bit of a shadow beneath my lower lash line, where it does run a little bit so it's good to wipe under your eyes through the day to prevent this.

Overall, this mascara was brilliant. I got really good results and a long lasting effect from a mascara that cost £1! I can't complain about that, just wish I'd grabbed some more when I was there! It's definitely worth trying.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

If you want a very cheap product, get this one, otherwise save up for something better

MUA is a brand I have seen around Superdrug (and nowhere else since the MUA brand is exclusive to Superdrug, a little bit like the way in which the Tesco Value brand is exclusive to Tesco) stores for quite a while now, but I hadn't really had anything to do with it in the past, as I was sure that such a cheap product could not possibly be good. I had heard some mixed reviews about this product from my friends; some saying how fantastic they were for the money they paid, and some saying how they would rather have saved up much more for a superior product because the quality of the products was so bad.

I was slightly apprehensive, as the quality of the make up which gets smeared on my face is very important to me; sometimes saving money is less profitable than buying a product which is less harmful to your skin. So how cheap exactly are the products that MUA sell? Well, I would say that they are pretty much at the bottom end of the make up price scale; most of its products are, in fact, at the low price of £1, with some other products costing more, but not by much at all. At £1 for a mascara or other make up items, it is not so shocking now to find that many people, like me, were uncertain about the quality of these! It is also not too shocking how people will buy these products regardless of the quality simply because of the money that they save on their cosmetics by buying these. What I was scared of whether the make up would actually be bad for my skin or not.

When my old mascara went missing (funny how these things always seem to happen to me- I lose all my make up and then discover them in very obvious places months later!) I went into Superdrug with no intention whatsoever to even as much as consider the MUA range. In fact, I had my eye on a rather more expensive L'Oreal product instead when I realised that I had forgotten my purse. I really did not want to go through all the bother of having to go back home, fetch my purse and then buy a mascara, and I had an occasion that very evening I could just not go to without some mascara handy at least. However, I did have a bit of small change littering my handbag, over £1 at least.

Well, the only mascara I could see was definitely within my price range was the MUA one in store, and so, in my desperation, I bought it. I know I may not have made the right decision, but sometimes when you are desperate, you will just have to make do with what you have got.

The MUA products are displayed on a cardboard stand at the Superdrug nearest to me; Superdrug have clearly made an effort for their very cheap line of products, however, they do not emphasise the importance of these products as much as they do the big brand names which earn them many times over the profit that MUA products bring. There are no lighted glass panels, or mirrors, but the products do not look too bad for the price you pay. I wouldn't exactly say that they look attractive, but they are certainly not bad to look at.

I bought the black shade of mascara- I understand that MUA does provide you with other shades too which might be useful; however, my preference has always been to buy black mascara. My second choice would have been the clear variety, but I was uncertain about the effectiveness of the product. The black tube with silver writing on it is what I would call slightly chunky, but is light and portable so it can easily fit inside a pocket or your make up bag. It has a protective plastic wrapper over it at the start.

The mascara itself is not that good, but not bad either, for what is paid. It does extend and volumise your eyelashes reasonably enough, but it is far from the effects that you would achieve using a better brand for example L'Oreal. I would compare the quality of this to New York City make up, which is not very good, but fairly good value- and even then, MUA products are under half the price. It does dry out rather quickly after the initial opening, and this can deposit horrible clumps of goo on your eyelashes- this is far from pleasant, I can tell you! On your eyelashes, it can flake and crumble, leaving a not too attractive effect.

This is not the right mascara for me because of its quality, but there is no denying that it is very good value. After all, it is not atrociously bad, and it does work as a decent mascara. For personal usage, I may have marked this product down further, but I do understand how this could be the perfect product for some, so this gets 3 out of 5 dooyoo stars from me. If I were you, though, I would invest in a superior product, even if it does mean spending more money.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            MUA mascara

The make up academy range in Superdrug is the first collection that I look at when purchasing my everyday makeup supplies. Why? Because they have a vast range of products that are basic and they are all £1. A 'basic' make up range isn't an insult as there are so many products out there these days that sometimes you just need that range to come along which says 'this is a mascara. it is black'. Essentially they are the basics to buying mascara's instead of being swept up in the media hype of having curly lashes or more voluminous lashes. No thank you,I won't spend £20 on a mascara just because an overrated celeb does!

It is no surprise, therefore that I use the MUA mascara on a daily basis. It comes in a simple plastic, black, patent tube with 'MUA' printed on it in silver metallic lettering. Nothing fancy-just basic and straight to the point yet does the job effectively. The brush is contained inside the lid alike most other mascaras. I do find that the brush does sometimes stick when putting the brush back into the tube but this is a minor disadvantage to the packaging design of this product.

The brush itself is medium sized and has quite soft bristles. Due to the soft, flimsy texture of the brushes it is advised that you use an eyelash curler prior to applying this mascara to give your lashes the lift they need if you are wanting bigger lashes as the brush just isn't firm enough to lift them up alone. I do like the brush, however, as it is soft on the eyes so looks very natural if you just apply a few strokes of mascara.

The mascara product itself is black and quite thick meaning that it does stay on the lashes once it is applied due to the viscosity. I don't find that my eyelashes stick together or 'clump' on application which is a big bonus as, having tried more expensive products in the past, I have found that my eyelashes tend to stick together and give a 'spider' look which isn't attractive!

The overall look that the mascara gives is a natural definition - for darker, or curlier lashes this is still a look that you can achieve using this product as long as you use an eyelash curler and apply several coats of mascara to the lashes.

For just a £1 I think this mascara is an absolute beauty steal and I would highly recommend it!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            The price suits the product

I recently bought a varied selection of different MUA make-up online, one being the MUA mascara. I was torn between the waterproof mascara and the normal one, but being cheap I opted for the £1 option.
I was quite disappointed with the product, but as it was only £1 I feel that it wasn't too much trouble not to like it.
The mascara to begin with felt very light and plasticky. It felt as though there was not much product inside the tube, and when I applied the mascara it appeared that this was in fact the case. The only part of the brush that seems to pick up any product is the end, which isn't particularly helpful. It took at least three or four applications of the mascara for it to even be slightly noticeable.
The brush was the only part of the item that wasn't too bad, it was a similar size and shape to my usual mascara so I was hoping it would have the same effect.
The packaging was also not very appealing, a bit plain and simple, but I guess that's what you can expect from a £1 product.
Overall I was disappointed in the product and I would not buy it again, however for £1 I will use it until I feel that the tiny amount of product has been put through it's paces.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            Bad product, but good price

I came across this mascara in a Superdrug store and nearly gasped at how cheap it was... £1. Yes, a pound for a mascara, something little found in these days of recession. Of course, I was weary of it, as most cheap stuff comes with a cheap quality; but I though, heck, just give it a try since its only costing you a pound and if its THAT bad you can just chuck it or not use it. Right?

Yep. Right. Too right. I got this in the clear variety as I had been searching for a good clear mascara that was unnoticeable. And this MUA mascara sure did the job... too well. I wanted a natural look, but I also wanted my eye lashes to be enhanced, but with this mascara, there was hardly any impact- I would have achieved a more effective affect had I put water on my lashes. And it lasted about as long as water too- there was absolutely NO difference after about five minutes. I decided to discontinue the use of it since it had no effect whatsoever... however I did not feel too bad about it since it was only a pound- but it was also a pound thrown in the bin thanks to Make Up Academy.

This just goes to show you can't expect exceptional quality with low prices. I can't say that this product necessarily disappointed me, because I was not expecting much from it anyway and for a product from a more expensive brand. But I have to give it credit for its price, so for the reasons listed above, I award this with 2 stars.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

Cheap but that's about the only good thing

I paid just £1.00 for some MUA mascara from Superdrug.

The mascara is cheap and the packaging isn't wonderful. However I wasn't going to walk past it for a pound. I threw it in my basket and hoped for the best!

The brush is a little on the large side and it isn't the most comfortable of brushes. I find that you need more than one coat to fully coat the lashes aswell. This can sometimes lead to clumping. The mascara is average in my opinion. One coat isn't enough and two coats is too much so you never really know how much of it to apply. It's a little bit hit and miss.

The mascara doesn't look too bad once it's on. I usually have to use a lash brush to separate the lashes as they can stick together sometimes, which results in the "spider eyes" look. The mascara can sometimes feel a little sticky aswell, which is something I dislike about this mascara. You end up with your eyes stuck together, especially when you've applied more than the one coat.

I use this mascara for work as it doesn't really do much for my lashes. It doesn't give them volume, nor does it define them. Basically it just coats them black as my lashes are naturally quite light and fair.

            Average.

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

A wonderful range from Superdrug, I love MUA

Yes another beauty review for me! I do love my make up and people that do read my reviews will know I simply adore the brand Benefit. However I've been looking for cheaper make up that is still of good quality and Make Up Academy is doing well so far.

Make Up Academy Mascara - Shade 5 Black:

"Make Up Academy provides trend shades on a budget, allowing you to achieve the latest looks without breaking the bank! - Dramatic Eyes for a Full on Flutter"

            My Findings:

For just £1.00 I didn't really have high hopes for this mascara; but as the other products I've tried from the Make Up Academy range have been rather good so I thought why not?

Mascara is always one of the last items I use when putting my make up on so it is important for it to go right the first time. The applicator brush I must say isn't the best however there is a good amount of mascara that comes over the brush. The brush isn't overloaded in anyway and doesn't clump the lashes in anyway.

What I think works best when applying this mascara is to apply two coats and on the second coat use some eye lash curlers. This way you get a nice lift to the lashes and adding two coats gives you a much fuller look to the lashes.

This mascara I find to dry rather quickly and once dry will pretty much last you the whole day. So far I haven't noticed any flaking unless you rub your eyes! The mascara is not waterproof and doesn't claim it is. (They do a waterproof one though).

I've used this more or less every day now for the past couple of weeks and still plenty more weeks of use yet. So super value for money and perfect for work make up, which is glam and affordable. Removing the mascara is a doddle either a wet wipe/baby wipe will do.

The packaging is basic but still in a way stylish with its minimalist no jargon approach. It's all black apart from the silver writing and on the smaller side than most other mascaras. So perfect for your little black bag.

            Price and Availability:

This mascara will only set you back £1.00 they even do three for two offers and buy one get one free from time to time - Bargain.

            Overall:

Again for the price I'm really happy with the results given from this mascara. It purely just adds colour to the lashes and has a great staying power. I think this mascara is great and perfect for work, however for a "going out night" I personally would go for something with more definition and volume.

I would certain recommend this for one of the better budget mascaras on the market.

Five out of five stars from me.

            Thanks for reading :o)

            Additional Information:

MUA is a range from Superdrug itself for bargain make up products for only £1.00, which I think is fantastic and will be waving my way through there range.

              Disadvantages

              great for a quid!

Make Up Academy is a budget make up range exclusive to Superdrug. The range includes eye make up, powders, lip glosses etc and many are priced at only £1.00.

              ~MUA Mascara~

There are 5 shades in the basic mascara range from MUA (there are waterproof and fancier mascaras available for £2.00). Shade 5 is the darkest shade in the basic range and is black.MUA claim that this basic mascara will give you "dramatic eyes for a full on flutter".

For £1.00, you receive a 7ml tube of mascara. The tube is black with silver writing. The mascara wand is attatched to the screw off lid and is around 10cm in length. It features a fairly long, standard mascara brush at the end.

              ~My Thoughts~

I stocked up on several MUA make up products last year. I normally use more expensive brands but was intrigued by how affordable the MUA products were. They are basic but they do the job and would make an ideal starter kit for a teenager who is experimenting with different make up.

I have yet to find the perfect mascara - I have tried brands such as Lancome and Estee Lauder and also Collection 2000 and No7 but none have given me wow results. I didn't expect much for £1.00 but have been surprised by how decent this mascara actually is. It is the perfect day time mascara for an understated, natural look, just don't expect the full of flutter that they claim you will get.

              ~Perk Up The Peepers~
This mascara is easy to use thanks to the chunky tube. The wand is easy to grip. The bristles are neatly arranged at the end of brush but aren't anything fancy. They are soft and do not drag on the lashes but are perhaps a bit too soft for my liking. A quick dip in the tube releases a small amount of mascara onto the brush. It has a standard mascara smell and a thin but not watery consistency - just right.

Applying this to my lashes is easy. The mascara doesn't offer curling benefits so I use an eye lash curler beforehand. I wiggle the wand from the base of my lashes up to the tip. I find it difficult to angle the brush enough to coat my corner lashes without making a mess but I can easily wipe off any mascara which comes into contact with my skin.

I do a few coats to cover my (already dark) eye lashes with enough mascara for them to be noticeable. The mascara dries very quickly and doesn't immediately smudge if I close my eyes. The mascara looks decent enough on my lashes. It isn't over the top and whilst it doesn't clump my lashes, it doesn't leave them looking like spider legs. It is lightweight and simply enhances my naturally long lashes. I wouldn't say it lengthens my lashes but it does add some definition to them.

The mascara is very gentle and doesn't irritate my sensitive eyes. Whilst it doesn't claim to be waterproof, I cannot say I have experienced any running with light drizzle. The mascara doesn't flake off my lashes and can easily be removed with some make up remover. My eye lashes have never felt dried out whilst wearing or after removing this mascara.

Shade 5 tints my lashes and after a few sweeps of mascara, I can notice a difference in the shade of my lashes. It isn't as strong a shade as more expensive mascaras offer my lashes but it is noticeable. I would say it is more black/brown that intense black. The colouring of my lashes is short lived and the mascara starts to fade after a few short hours. Topping it up again is simple and quick.

              ~Conclusion~

This is probably the cheapest mascara I have ever used. It is more than worth the quid I paid for it. It is fine for basic, tinted lashes but not ideal for parties or nights on the town as it simply isn't dramatic enough to give you amazing lashes. I have had my tube for about 5months and the formula is still moist and hasn't dried out. I always replace my mascara after 6months and have no issues with doing this but I will use up my No7 mascara before opening another MUA.

              Overall 4 stars!

              Thanks for reading :)
