I'm not a massive makeup wearer, I tend to just stick with mascara and foundation for every day around the house wear and save a "full face" for going out or special occasions. Having said that, there's something irrisistible to me about makeup and I can't seem to pass a makeup stand without treating myself to a little something - hence why I try and stay away from Boots as much as possible! This is exactly how I came to own my Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow palette. On holiday in America my husband needed something from the drugstore and was doing his usual dawdling/browsing thing (unlike most couples I'm usually the one tapping my feet and looking at my watch while I wait for him to finish looking around a shop!) so I decided that, as he was taking so long, I'd slip a little something for me into his basket as well - I suppose it was a form of punishment on my husband in this case, rather than a treat for me!! AVAILABILITY As it is made by such a well-known brand as Maybelline these eyeshadows are readily available in many outlets. A quick look on the Boots website shows they currently retail for £7.19 but can be bought on a 3 for 2 offer and, obviously it being Boots, can accumulate you another 28 Advantage Points. The Expert Wear eyeshadows are available as either a single colour, a duo palette, a trio or a quad palette. I bought the quad palette in shades Natural Smokes and from memory it cost about $5, so much cheaper Stateside than over here. The Boots website is surprisingly lacking in colour choices, providing only 3, although the version I have is still available on Amazon and for a much more reasonable price of around £5, although you'll pay delivery on top of that. WHY I BOUGHT IT This particular eye shadow set caught my eye because all my life I've been trying to achieve the smokey eyed look and failed miserably. I think really I should get a lesson from a professional but everyone else seems to be able to achieve the look without professional help and the stubborn side of me refuses to accept that I can't do it too! Anyway, this palette is specifically designed to achieve the smokey look and, not only does it provide all the right colours and tools for you to be able to do that, it also has a handy little set of instructions on how to apply them on the back of the case. So I figured that if I still couldn't get it right with this set of eyeshadows I never would and may as well give up! PACKAGING The eye shadow quad palette comes in a little black plastic case, around 2 x 3 inches, with a clear flip top lid so that you can see the colours beneath. It has Maybelline New York written subtly across the front and on the back, as I said there is a label which shows how to apply each colour and has a little diagram as a further aid to getting it right. It also has a disturbingly long list of ingredients. I'm not going to count them all but there are ten lines of them squeezed onto this little case! The lid clicks into place very neatly and has never fallen open, despite me not being the most careful or dainty of people. My makeup bag tends to just get chucked into my handbag/overnight bag/suitcase without much thought usually, but the case for this shadow has never caused any problems in either cracking or opening when not meant to. THE PRODUCT Inside the palette you get 4 different coloured eye shadows. My particular one has a very pale pinky, a shimmery dark brown, an even darker brown and then an almost black colour. The palest and darkest colours both take up bigger sections of the set, as these are the two colours you use most if you apply them as directed. I find this an especially handy thought as some eyeshadow sets I've had in the past have supplied equal amounts of each colour but you never apply the same amount of each colour and so end up with one running out much sooner than the others. Also supplied with the quad are two fowm applicators. I was pleased that they provided two as obviously with there being 4 colours one would have meant constantly cleaning your applicator between colours, whereas with 2 you have 4 sides of foam, one for each colour. Having said that, after the first time of using this set I gave up on the applicators anyway. To be honest they were neither use nor ornament and didn't pick up the shadow very well at all. I found myself rubbing the foam onto the colour really hard and still not coming away with much colour so gave up and ended up using my own brushes. This isn't a major issue for me as I normally use brushes and they're always in my makeup bag, but if Maybelline are going to supply applicators with the product it would be useful if they could actually be used for purpose! Another thing lacking with the product is that there is no mirror in the palette so if you need to top up your colour during the working day or on an evening out you need to find another mirror. Again, not a huge issue for me as I don't wear it that much but I can imagine that if I did wear this on a daily basis that would become a thorn in my side. APPLICATION Applying the eyeshadows is really easy thanks to the instructions and diagram on the back. You simply use the lightest colour to cover the entire eye area, the next shade to cover the eyelid, the even darker shade to contour the crease and the very darkest shade to line around your eye. It really is so simple that even I have been able to do it and achieve that much longed for smokey eyes look. When using my own brushes the shadow goes on very nicely, it doesn't fall off onto my cheeks or sit in the creases of my eyelid, it looks smooth and each of the colours really stands out, apart from the palest one, yet they also blend together really nicely too. I'm a bit of a fidgeter really and tend to end up rubbing my eyes during the day a lot and unfortunately this eyeshadow doesn't have the staying power to withstand this, although not many do to be honest and it's not really fair to expect them to stay put when you rub your eye. But it has never run when I've been caught in the rain (I hate umbrellas and prefer to get wet than use them!) and when I've applied it on a morning to go out for the day it has always lasted for the entire day, although I would definitely have felt the need for a quick re-application if I'd wanted it to last the night as well. I'm a contact lense wearer but this eye shadow has never had any adverse affects with them or irritated my eyes in any way, although I wouldn't say that I have sensitive eyes anyway. The list of ingredients on the back would make me wary of recommending it to you if you do have sensitive eyes though. CONCLUSION I have been quite impressed with this Maybelline quad eyeshadow. The packaging is sturdy and suitable for use, the eyshadows themselves are longlasting and really help me achieve my desired smokey eyes without making me look like a panda and, for the price I paid for it (erm, yes ok, for the price the hubby paid for it) I am very happy. The fact that the different shades are sized differently is very effective in this case and each is wearing down at an equal rate. I've now had it for about 18 months and use it probably twice a week on average and each colour has worn down to the silver lining underneath but still has plenty left around the edges. Having said all that, there are a couple of negative points which detract from the star rating I can award. Firstly the price. It is definitely much more expensive over here than in the US which is very annoying and, to be perfectly honest, I don't think it's really worth the price Boots charge for it. I am equally as happy with a Number 17 quad palette I have (see previous review!) which costs a lot less and provides more actual shadow too. Secondly, the applicators provided with this palette were extremely innefective and quickly got relegated, first to the bottom of my makeup bag and then to the bin when I had a clear out. I'd rather no applicators were provided than ones that don't work. The lack of a mirror is a slight niggle but not a deal breaker for me so on reflection I would definitely buy this quad palette again, although not in Boots, and am awarding it 4 stars as the benefits of the product outweigh the annoyances of the packaging.
I really most Maybelline products and have several of these eyeshadows and find them to be a really good product. The packaging is simple and you can see the colour or the eyshadow through the lid of it and that it comes with a small applicator which I find very handy for taking out and about. They come in a lovely range of colours. I have them in brown, grey and a light pink shade but there are also lots of brighter colours in this range. I think one of the best things about this eyeshadow is that it lasts a long time without fading or wearing off. It feels nice to apply as it soft and smooth and looks even when I apply it. You don't need to use a lot to get a noticable look with this eyeshadow which I really like as it means it lasts a long time. I paid about £5 for each eyeshadow which I think is about average for a nice quality eyeshadow. The only thing I would say is that you do need to be careful with the case of the eyeshadow as the lid comes open nvery easily. I would definately recommend this eyeshadow to a friend.
I'm a sucker for spending when I am browsing the aisles of Boots and Superdrug especially when I find myself in the cosmetics section. Because I like to experiment with eye shadow I was immediately drawn towards the special offers in Boots on Maybelline eye shadow. I couldn't help myself and ended up purchasing two Maybelline Expert Eye Wear Eye Shadow. ***Packaging*** The eyes hadows come in a dark blue plastic case, with a clear hinged lid which flips over to open. Maybelline is written in white font on the clear packaging. You do not get an applicator included with the eye shadow. The plastic case is probably one of the worst and most flimsy from all eye shadows that I have tried. In fact my Maybelline eye shadows and their contents are now scattered at the bottom of my make up bag. The plastic lid smashed almost immediately as it does not stay shut. The other problem is that the pressed eye shadow powder does not stay in the casing so once the lid has smashed the eye shadow falls out of the case. ***Price*** A 10g Expert Eyewear eye shadow costs £4.99 in Boots. I bought two of the on special offer in Boots for £7. I think that this is reasonable value for money and averagely priced for an eye shadow if compared with other high street brands. ***Application & Results*** The Maybelline Expert Eye Wear eye shadows are described to be: " Vibrant shades with intense colour pigments for and extensive shade collection. Highly charged with pigments all shades have an ultra soft formula with a texture that is silky to touch. Allows for perfect blending, precise colour application and a light weight feel on the eyes." There is definitely a wide range of shades in the eye shadows from Maybelline. From darker brighter shades to more natural shades. However Maybelline probably offer more vibrant shades than some other competing brands which are perfect for creating quite a bright dramatic look. My favourites are black metal and Khaki Chic. The Black Metal Colour is a very deep black eyeshadow which is perfect for creating smoky eyes, and the Khaki Chic is a natural green khaki colour, yet colour wise is very bright and vibrant when applied to eyes. Applying the Maybelline eye shadows is very easy. The pressed powder when applied to the eyelid glides on. The powder is not excessively powder so stays on the eyelid and does not fall onto the face or cheeks. I did find that you need to use more product than other eye shadows in order to get full coverage and build up the strong colour. The eye shadow does blend very well when applied with a make up brush; therefore it is possible to blend a number of colours together easily. Once applied the eye shadow gives quite a strong bold look. Especially if you have used a vibrant colour. The appearance of the eye shadow is more matte than many other brands of eye shadow therefore you get a strong block colour rather than a shimmery colour. The Maybelline eye shadow is long lasting and when applied in the morning lasts all day. Even the bright vibrant strong colours are long lasting and the strong colour remains on the eyelid all day without fading. This is impressive and many other brands of eye shadow need reapplying throughout the day in order to achieve this look. The Maybelline eye shadow does not crease or smudge with wear. ***Overall*** The Maybelline Expert Eye Wear eye shadows are great products for those that like quite strong colours that remain in tact all day. The eye shadow is easy to apply although to build up quite a strong colour you do need to apply quite a lot of the product. This is a reasonable value product and mid priced for an eye shadow however as you do need to use quite a lot of the product, you do go through the eye shadow quicker than you would with other brands of eye shadow. The pressed powder eye shadows blend easily and create a variety of looks which does not crease on your eyelids. The colours are strong but have more of a matte effect to them, more so than many other brands of eye shadow that I have tried. If you are not put off by the flimsy packaging (which is common for most eye shadows it seems) then it is definitely worth giving the Maybelline Expert Eye Wear shadows a try.
I purchased one of these eye shadows in the 02 seashell shade, which is a shimmery golden colour. The lid is clear (as you can see in the above product photo) so you can easily show what the shade is. Application This was one of the mono eye shadows and doesn't come with an applicator. I usually just apply the eye shadow with an eye shadow brush. When you apply it, it goes on easily and doesn't take a whole lot of blending to easily cover your whole eyelid. I often find that I need to make two separate applications of the eye shadow to each eyelid, but this is still pretty quick to do. The Colour This particular eye shadow is a golden shade that shimmers when it catches the light. This appealed to me as I'm not a fan of dramatic eye shadow shades for daytime use, and wanted something that was subtle (but not too subtle). Staying Power The colour stayed on throughout the day, which impressed me a lot. I am all too used to eye shadows that fade considerably as the day wears on and leaves you with nothing, but this was different. The eye shadow was still visible by the evening, although I did need to touch it up a little in the late afternoon as the colour had faded ever so slightly in the outer corner of my eyelid. The Price This eye shadow is available at Boots from £3.25, and £2.49 from Superdrug. My Verdict This eye shadow is a bit more expensive than some other brands (especially depending on where you buy it from), but in my opinion it is worth paying a bit extra for the quality. With some of the cheaper brands that I have used in the past, the colour fades within an hour or two and I would constantly have to reapply to maintain the colour, so I was pleased that this was not the case here. The colour (and notably the shimmer) lasted for hours, although as I mentioned earlier in the review, the outer corner of my eyelids was the first area to fade. This isn't very noticeable though so you can get away with not touching that area up if it's not convenient.
I bought a Maybelline Expert Wear Eye Shadow trio last year for my wedding. After having it applied in the morning, to me waking up the next morning (I know, naughty naughty leaving make up on over night) It hadn't moved an inch. So I decided these were going to be the new eyeshadows for me. I searched in Boots but found them to be a tad pricy so I ordered quite a few different colours off ebay as they were just a fraction of the price. You can get these eyeshadows in monos, duos, triples and quads. Some of the monos do not come with an applicator but the larger packs tend to with the quad even coming with two. The eyeshadow itself is a pressed powder. There is quite a lot of the shadow actually in a tub so it is quite deceiving. The first thing to remember is you don't need much of the shadow on your brush at all if you prefer something subtle. The colours are very deep and rich. I tend to use the same colours both daytime use and going out use. I just gently rub the applicator over the shadow once for a lovely pale even colour on my eyelids. If I am going out and want to have a dramatic effect, I out a pale wash of colour all over the lid and keep deepening the colour on the lid to the desired effect. The eyeshadows come in a range of colours from pastelles to very dark smoky colours. My favourite two are emerald isle and caribbean blue as they have glittery hints in them and the emerald isle is a deep greeny blue which is great for a sultry look and makes my bluey grey eyes look intensly blue. I now don't buy any other eyeshadows as the staying power and the price of them (if you look in the right places, e.g. ebay) is just second to none.
The product I am reviewing is called "Maybelline Expert Wear Eye Shadow" I bought the "Maybelline Expert Wear Eye Shadow" From boots for only £5.99 I bought a gorgeous green dress for a party last year, and I really wanted to buy a new eyeshadow to go with it so after looking through the many make-up counters I spotted the 'spring green Maybelline expert eye shadow' it was the exact colour I was looking for. What does the promo say? - Advanced formula contains ColorClingTM System that gently adheres to lids and resists fading through the day. - Formulation is silky-smooth, gliding on evenly and blending effortlessly. - Micro-fine pigments for crease-resistant colour. For best results "How do I make my eye make-up stay put for longer? Try Expert Wear Monos and Trios. The special binding formula in Expert Wear clings to the delicate eye area - keeping colour fresh and crease resistant until you decide to take it off!" My thoughts... Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow is a formulation that is silky-smooth, that glides on evenly and blends effortlessly. The eyeshadow contains a micro-fine color pigment which will not crease, smudge or fade. Maybelline Expert Wear Eyeshadow is available in a variety of colours. This eye shadow is pigment-rich; Just like Urban Decay( well known brand for their amazing pigment rich eye shadows) Maybelline load their eye shadows with so much colour and very few binders (there the things that hold the shadow together) So the eye shadow makes your eyes look amazing and vibrant. Its defiantly one of my favourite eye shadows, before buying this product I was sick to death of buying eye shadows that didn't stand out and looked dull. The shades to choose from. Iced fudge Caribbean blue Spring green Khaki chic Intense black Golden sand Silver agent Chocolate Purple Mystic Application Its one of the softest eye shadows in my make-up draw and it's really easy to apply. Tips This might sound like a very bizarre tip but I really recommend you soak your eye shadow brush before you apply ANY eye shadow, and then apply the eye shadow on the brush it makes application so much easy because it goes onto your lids like cream and the colour stands out more. Don't believe me, try it seriously it works. In conclusion, I really love this eyeshadow, its soft, easy to apply, cheap, pigment rich and just as good as the more expensive brands like Urban Decay.
I bought Maybelline's expert wear eye shadow about a month ago. I find it works okay when I wear it on top of another eyeshadow like loreal colour appeal but have been disappointed when I've worn it on its own. This could be because I misjudged how dark the ones I bought were - artic blue - and I normally wear much brighter and lighter colours. I have quite light skin with blue eyes and brown hair. I think the colours would suit a blonde with blue eyes more or even possibly someone with darker skin. I think my skin is probably too pale to carry off the colours I bought! I think for someone who is used to wearing darker make-up colours this product definitely provides great value for money. It looks hardly touched and I've worn it most days. It does have a nice shimmery effect which does make it look a little more glamourous. It feels nice on my skin and doesn't give me an allergic reaction, despite my eyes sometimes becoming sensitive to make up! The dark blue packaging looks quite sleek. Superdrug does offer the best price I've seen - especially if you buy it using a card registered with a high street reward giving cash back site!
I have been using Maybelline Expert Wear eye shadow for about six months now, and alongside Boots No.7 stay perfect eye shadows, this is one of my favourites. ~About the product~ This eye shadow comes in pressed powder form, and is available in a range of 14 different shades. The shadows are available in mono or duo form, I have a mono one, which is named 'rose tint' and is a pale pink colour. ~Packaging~ The shadow comes in a dark blue plastic case, with a clear slightly domed lid, which is hinged at the top to flip open. It has the Maybelline logo across the middle, and is quite a simple design. There is no applicator or brush included with this, which personally I think is a good thing, as I don't find many of the free applicators you get to be very good, and prefer to use a proper eye shadow brush. ~Using it~ The powder is very fine, and I sometimes find that I have to sweep my brush over it a few times to pick up a decent amount of colour, although it is possible that this could be due to the pale colour I selected. The powder is quite silky and glides on easily - it is also not too powdery - by that, I mean that when you apply it you don't get most of it falling on your cheeks. ~Results~ The powder gives good coverage, the one I have is quite shimmery, so I wouldn't say it gives a natural look, but great for nights out. The best thing about this product is definitely it's staying power. Apparently it has 'colour-cling technology' whatever that may be, but it really does last and I have never once had a problem with it creasing. ~Price~ The price of this product seems to vary depending on where you shop. Superdrug sell this for £3.49, whereas Boots charge a ridiculously high £5.99. I'm not saying that it's not worth the price Boots charge, because I would be happy to pay that, however I don't know how they justify charging nearly double for it. ~Overall Verdict~ This is a great eye shadow that lasts for ages, and like I said, one of my favourites. I am trying really hard to cut back on the amount I spend on beauty products, however next time I need a new eye shadow, this is a range I wouldn't hesitate to use again - but I'll know to go to Superdrug to buy it and not Boots!
Colour will not crease, smudge or fade / Colour smooths on and adheres to lids with effortless blending /
