I love all things Benefit so when they have a sale on I do like to take advantage! This lip gloss is usually £15 but I paid half price for it, so that was £7.50. It came presented in pretty cardboard packaging and the tube was bigger than I anticipated it would be. It's the usual form of lip gloss application, just unscrew the lid, squeeze and go! The lip gloss is blue in colour. Yes, you did read that right, it is BLUE in colour! Benefit say that this blue colour helps to achieve the look of whiter teeth when your wear it. Hmm. Let' see shall we!
Upon first opening the gloss I was met by a VERY minty aroma. This aroma of the gloss is very much of a peppermint scent so if you dislike strong minty scents then you're probably best avoiding this one! The gloss is easy to apply. It comes out of the tube easily enough without needing much squeezing and it feels nice and tingly as you apply it to the lips. The tingly sensation lasts for a few minutes and once it settles your lips look more plumped, well mine do anyway. I have quite small lips and this gloss makes them appear a little larger, which I like!
The gloss isn't sticky at all and it leaves the lips looking glossed and shiny. If you apply too much gloss it can leave a tint of blue behind so apply a little at a time to avoid the "Smurf" look! The gloss leaves a nice shine on the lips though and the effect is long lasting. It rarely needs topping up.
I don't know about the "teeth whitening" effect as no one has said anything to me and I can't really notice anything myself. Also, the gloss is said to leave your breath smelling fresher but again, I can't really notice anything.
This is a nice lip gloss but I don't think I would have paid £15 for it. I only bought it because it was a Benefit product and I liked the slightly strange blue colour!
Nice but nothing special and not worth the full price tag of £15!
I have a well documented love affair with Benefit cosmetics and always like trying out their products, as I find that most do actually what they claim to do! California Kissin' is a multi-purpose lip gloss, which as well as giving you a glossy pout, also claims to brighten your teeth and freshen your breath. Pretty bold claims, huh?
I got mine as part of a gift set, but it is also available to purchase on its own for £15.00 for 12.5g of gloss. The gloss comes in a see-through tube and is a glittery, aquatic blue colour. If I'm honest, it does remind me slightly of glittery toothpaste. When you open the gloss, you are immediately greeted with a strong peppermint, though slightly chemical smell.
When you apply the gloss, it's very tingly, and the tingly feeling does last for a few minutes after application. This is due to the peppermint that is in the product.
I have read other reviews from people who have said that this leaves a blue tinge on your lips, but I have never found this with my gloss. There was a question asked on the Benefit website about the colour of the gloss and whether on application the gloss was a blue colour and a Benefit employee did say that due to the colour of the gloss, it does occasionally happen, but adding another application of the gloss should remedy it.
I do find that there is s slight brightening effect when I use this gloss, although I am aware that it could be my imagination. As for freshening breath, I have never been brave enough to ask someone for their opinion!
I do like this gloss, and use it mainly on top of lip balm to give my lips a bit of a shine without being too obvious. It also works on its own, and goes on clear and I like the tingly, fresh sensation that it brings. However, I wouldn't pay £15 for a lip gloss normally, so once my tube runs out, it's unlikely that I will replace it
I was given this last lip shine last Christmas as a little stocking filler gift and although I do really like Benefit products I wasn't too sure about this because it is bright blue with little specks of glitter in it! I thought that it would look ridiculous but I have to say, I love it!
When it's on my lips it doesn't look too blue - there's a slight blue tinge but it really doesn't look that noticeable and I love how shiny, glossy and healthy it makes my lips look. Because of the little specks of glitter I was concerned that it would look a bit tacky and sparkly, but it doesn't - it just gives my lips a nice sheen which doesn't look completely natural but it doesn't look over the top either.
Benefit claim that this lip shine makes teeth appear whiter because of blue tinge and it really does, my smile looks noticeably brighter when I'm wearing this. It can be worn over or under lipstick and I've worn it over a matte red lipstick a few times and it makes the overall finish look so much better - red lipstick can really highlight the fact that I have slightly discoloured teeth (not bright yellow or anything!) and the lip shine really does make them look whiter - not bright white or anything but not as noticeably discoloured and a lot brighter and healthier looking.
It doesn't feel sticky or heavy on my lips and it keeps them looking nice and glossy for a couple of hours but it needs re-applying now and again, especially after eating. Another thing that I like about this product is the smell - it's a strong, fresh minty scent and it also tastes quite minty - not that I eat it or anything but when I lick my lips and get a taste of it it does taste really minty.
I think this makes a nice change because most of my other lip glosses and lip shines smell very sweet. I also like the packaging design as not too much product comes out thanks to the little nozzle and because it has a slanted applicator I can apply it straight to my lips from the tube. The formula of the product is smooth and it spreads over my lips evenly without going gloopy.
A 12 gram tube of this lip shine retails at around £15 which I know sounds very expensive but a tube lasts for ages and the quality definitely makes it worth the money. I really like this product and I recommend it. Five out of five stars.
I bought this Benefit lip gloss during a bit of a make up spending spree while on my recent holiday to New York. The lip gloss is called "California Kissin'."
The first thing you will notice about this lip gloss is the colour of it, which is bright blue. The lip gloss itself comes in a sturdy blue box with the product information on it. Inside the box is the lip gloss tube. The tube itself is made of clear plastic meaning you can see the blue lip gloss inside. The lid of the lip gloss screws on and off and underneath the lid is a slanted applicator.
When you squeeze out the lip gloss you will see that it is a blue shimmery colour. You can apply the gloss using either the slanted applicator or by squeezing it onto your finger and rubbing it on to your lips. The lip gloss smells minty and slightly sweet.
Benefit say that the blue sheen of this lip gloss will make your teeth appear whiter. So does it work? I was initially worried about applying this lip gloss as I didn't want my lips to look blue! When I applied this to my lips I found that the lip gloss gave a clear shimmer. The lip gloss is quite thick and gloopy however it does spread across your lips easily. I did not think that this gloss lived up to its claims of making my teeth look whiter.
This lip gloss feels quite sticky on my lips and my hair gets easily stuck to them when wearing this. The first time I wore this lip gloss my lips felt slightly tingly due to it being minty, however as I got used to it and wore it more they didn't tingle so much! When you are wearing this gloss you can taste the mint quite strongly, although I would not go as far as to say it freshens breath. The gloss also has a slightly sweet taste if you lick your lips.
This lip gloss can be worn both over and under lipstick as per Benefit, however I have only worn it on its own. I don't imagine lipstick would go on easily over the top of this gloss as it is so sticky, however I suppose I can't judge as I haven't tried this!
This lip gloss is available at anywhere that stocks Benefit products and costs £14.00 for a 12.5g tube. Overall given the fact that this lip gloss is quite sticky and doesn't add any colour to your lips, I feel that it is overpriced. It is probably not a lip gloss I would buy again!
Thanks for reading/rating and I hope you found my review useful.
My mum bought me this for Christmas a few years back. I love Benefit makeup and have tried a few of their products. The lipgloss costs £14 for a tube which contains 12.5g of lipgloss.
The lipgloss comes in a plastic tube which has a slanted applicator. The tube is see through with a few patterns printed on it. Through this you can see the blue lipgloss which has a glittery hue.
The lipgloss is designed to brighten your smile this is because why the gloss is blue in colour. The blue against the colour of the teeth make them appear whiter. The lipgloss also has a subtle shimmer which is said to give dazzling lips. The gloss can be used on its own or over lipstick. I never wear lipstick so I have only tried this on it's own. The gloss is really blue and the forst time I used it I applied to much and ended up with blue lips. It also has a minty smell which is pleasant and I was suprised to discover it tasted of mint too.
After using this gloss my lips did look shiny and the mint also made them tingle. I can't say I noticed that my teeth were any whiter. The gloss does have a very sticky consistency which I didn't like. It was rather gloopy. I also found the lipgloss wasn't particularly long lasting. After less than an hour it completely wears off but it leaves a horrible sticky residue behind.
I am not a big fan of this lipgloss and in future I will stick to Lancome Juicy tubes. The smell and taste are great but the texture of the texture of this gloss is horrible.
I wouldn't recommend this there are cheap lipglosses which are much better.
California Kissin' was the first ever Benefit product I bought and impressed me so much I'm now a little bit of a dedicated follower of the range. I first bought this in Winter when my chapped lips were bothering me so much that I just grabbed the first quality brand lip balm I saw- and it happened to be this one. The assistant at the time advised me it would give me minty fresh breath and a bright smile along with moisturising my lips; I didn't really care about that at the time.
The lip balm comes in a sturdy cardboard box which is a lovely blue, summery colour just like the lip balm itself. It costs £14 for a 12.5 gram tube. The tube itself is squishable and has a screw top. The top of the tube is slanted and soft- making it ideal for putting straight onto the lips.
The balm itself is a blue-green colour with sparkly bits running through it. It is smooth and soft and feels cool to the touch. It spread nicely on the lips and feels tingly and cool. The balm does taste minty- but not irritatingly so, and also not enough that I think it makes a difference to the way my breath smells. The balm gives the lips a nice sheen. I was a little concerned as to the blue colour of the balm, I didn't want to look like I was freezing to death! However, the blue is not intense at all on the lips, it just gives it an interesting sheen.
I wear this everyday and carry it around in my scrub pocket at work. I'm a bit of a compulsive applier; putting on lip balm is almost a nervous twitch for me! However, I don't find myself applying this nearly as much as other products, including some other premium brands. It isn't sparkly enough to be inappropriate for work, but it's just glossy enough to look good for evening-wear on its own. The instructions say it can be worn under lipstick, however I think it's just a little bit too heavy for this.
This is my favourite lip balm and, while it doesn't improve the way your breath smells, it does feel very good and give your lips that teeny bit of shine. Oh, and it helped with my sore, chapped lips too!
I'm afraid this product does not live up to all of its claims, mind you to be honest I never really expected it too given that for a lip gloss Benefit claimed it would brighten up my smile and freshen up my breath as the blue sheen that it is meant to add to your lips means that your teeth look whiter, well that proved to be a load of hock-em as far as I could tell as I could see not difference after applying it. Now you will not end up with blue lips when you use this product as the blue tint is very subtle but you will not end up with a whiter smile either.
It comes in a soft tube which you can squeeze, there is an applicator inside and the gloss itself is a watery blue colour with a blend of blue and green running through it. It also has a strong minty smell to it so the bit about making your breath smell fresher is sort of true, well at least your lips will seem like you have been sucking long and hard on an extra strong mint.
The applicator is pretty easy to use but also given that you can squeeze the tube you can also apply it with your finger which is probably easier, also it means it is a product you can share without worrying about whether the other person will pass on any ulcers or cold sores. It has a slightly tingly feel when you apply it, the sort of tingle my head gets when using Original Source tea tree shampoo but this is not as strong and it does look nice enough on my lips with a nice gloss effect with a hint of glitter however it is nothing special and at £14 for a tube it does not justify the price tag. Once applied it lasts long enough so it is good from that point of view.
This is a one off purchase for me and not one I will buy again, it is nice enough but over priced and does nothing about making my smile look brighter. Not a total waste but do not expect too much from it.
*Why I want the product*
I am a lover of lip glosses like most of the women out there but I had never heard of a blue lip gloss before never mind seeing one until recently when I was reading a blog and her passion for blue lip glosses. Personally I thought she was mad to love such a weird colour for a gloss but when she did swatches of them on her lips thankfully they didn't look blue, instead most of them looked really natural and refreshing.
*What do Benefit say about the product?*
Benefit say California Kissin' is a minty lip gloss that helps to freshen your breath and your smile.
California Kissin' is a subtle blue sheen that helps to make teeth appear whiter and gives you a minty fresh taste.
For a lip gloss of Benefit I was expecting a long sturdy tube instead I was greeted with a squeezable tube like toothpaste, which will give you 12.5g of product. Unscrewing the white lid you have an angled applicator for ease of application to the lips. The front of the packaging sees a blue and green design with California Kissin' in white which all stands out well with the blue product inside.
*So is the product really blue?*
Yes, the colour in the tube is a vibrant aqua colour with beautiful blue shimmer that can be seen running through the packaging. Swatching the product on the back of my hand I am surprised to see how pigmented and opaque this blue gloss is and I have to say I am starting to worry; I don't want to look like a women from the living dead.
When California Kissin' is on the back of my hand I can see all the lovely undertones that make this special gloss up. Yes you have the gloss that is a lovely aqua blue but the shimmer inside is a mixture of blue and green, which makes it even more tropical.
The scent I find is quite strong and I can really smell the minty scent that drifts through the air.
*Applying the product*
I never used the angled applicator that comes with this product; instead I squeezed some product out onto my finger and applied it to my clean, dry lips.
Once applied to the lips the product feels cool and refreshing with a slight tingling sensation, thankfully the blue gloss isn't visible and almost goes into a clear gloss but with the blue hint of shimmer, California Kissin' is very glossy and gives you a lovely polishes pouty pout.
The shimmer partials come more to light when the sun catches your face but it doesn't look too in your face or like you've applied glitter all over, which over a certain age isn't a good look. Thankfully this product looks natural and refreshing to have something on that is a little different from the norm.
It never feels gloopy on the lips or sticky like a lot of lip glosses can but unfortunately it does have the same longevity as other lip glosses when eating or drinking. However if you're not doing those things this gloss will happily sit on your lips for hours.
*Price and availability*

*What I think about it/do I like it*
California Kissin' is a lovely gloss that feel cooling and soothing on the lips while giving you a great shine. I like the fact the blue gloss is different from the norm glosses but this gloss doesn't live up to its claims for me, which is always disappointing to find in a product.
The product smells great, goes on clear with subtle blue and green shimmer, not sticky at all and has a long lasting power while lips feel moisturised and smooth.
I would imagine the tingling sensation I felt at the beginning was due to the minty scent that is in this product. However Benefits marketing strategy for this product is it makes your teeth look whiter with the blue contract, unfortunately I didn't see a difference and even when I asked family members what they thought they said they couldn't tell either so this is a big flaw.
*Would I purchase again*
No I don't think I would. I don't feel it made my teeth whiter although Benefit claims it would, but it is a nice concept. I just can't comprehend spending full price for a product just for the gloss when cheaper makes give me the same effect.
California Kissin' is no ordinary lip gloss. At first glance, it can appear unusually weird with the aqua shimmering gel strongly resembling toothpaste which is not usually something that you would smear all over your lips. Initially, this sparkling blue lip gloss can look off putting in comparison with the more comforting red and pink shades you may be used to seeing. This bizarre trend continues when you add into the equation that the packaging also looks like a tube of mini toothpaste and is coloured with fresh, cool blues and greens. However, it is not a coincidence or crazy mistake that Benefit has chosen to design this product in this way.
With this product, Benefit has taken a step ahead of the normal lip glosses. Not satisfied with just making your lips soft and shiny, California kissin' aims to provide you with fresh breath and the appearance of whiter teeth as well. This smile brightening lip shine promises to create an optical illusion that is a lot cheaper and more convenient than a trip to the dentist. And it can be yours for around £14 for 12.5 grams. It is also available in the Benefit mini set called 'Just In Case' which is how I first came into contact with this product.
The thought of applying a blue gloss to your lips can make you worry that you are going to look like you can't breath properly or that you are incredibly cold. However once applied, this gloss has the same appearance on the lips as a clear lip gloss but it promises some added benefits. It is the subtle blue sheen that will make your teeth and therefore your smile, look brighter. And not only will it make your lips and teeth look radiantly bright but Benefit claims that the minty fragrance will freshen your breath too. It's also pocket sized so it can easily be reapplied throughout the day as needed.
When you removed the white lid of this product, you'll notice that the tip of the bottle is slanted and acts as an applicator in order to apply the aqua sheen smoothly to your lips. Alternatively you can use your fingertip to apply the gloss if you find that easier. The product can be worn alone or over the top of your favourite lip stick to make it shine. The gloss itself is quite thick and glossy and unfortunately not that long lasting. The problem with making a gloss that tastes great is that it is quite tempting to lick your lips and I'm not sure how healthy a belly full of Cailfornia Kissin' is in the long run! It also has a subtle shimmer that is not too in your face.
And now the negatives. This look gloss does make your lips softer and gives them a delectable shimmer. However, I can't say that I've noticed that the sheen has made my teeth appear whiter. If it has then it must be very minimal because I can't see the difference. The claim for fresher breath is not entirely true. It's your lips that smell minty fresh so if you are going to eat a curry, there's not much this little tube of blue stuff is going to be able to do about that!
Also, the fact that the liquid comes in a squeezable tube means that you can't return what you don't use into the bottle meaning there may be a wastage that you don't get with the standard tube and wand. It's not cheap either and there are plenty of other brands now selling similar products for a cheaper price that are just as good. And finally, if your wearing this outside on a windy day, your hair will stick to your lips. But then this is something that will happen with whatever brand of gloss you happen to be wearing.
All in all, this is a lovely lip gloss that doesn't quite live up to all of its claims. However, it does look great on the lips and I am a big fan of Benefit's products. But if you are buying this simply for fresher breath and whiter teeth, you may be better off investing in some chewing gum and a new toothbrush!
Benefit California kissin'
"Our minty lip shine freshens your breath and brightens your smile. So pick a partner and let the kissin' begin!" - Benefit
Overall, I love Benefit as a skin care and makeup brand, I think that there products are good, funky and always usually deliver the results that they promise. However, that being said they do sometimes fall short of themselves and release a product that I probably could have and should have lived without. This lip gloss is unfortunately one of them.
--So what's the verdict on kissable lips?--
When you squeeze out a small amount about the first thing I noticed was how blue it looked, however, it is very sheer. There is definitely a subtle but almost unnoticeable (it really is subtle) blue tinge to it, that Benefit say should make your teeth appear whiter, thus brightening your smile. However, I can't really see that the blue tinge makes my teeth look any whiter, if anything I would be worried that the subtle blue shade would make me look like I needed to wrap up warmer.
Not that you should go out of your way to try this, but it does taste and smell lovely. It's minty but not overwhelmingly so. I do like this lip gloss, it just isn't anything special or really anything that does that bit extra, it doesn't earn its place amongst my Benefit favourites.
It has a pretty average staying power for a lip gloss and it does depend on what you are doing, eating, etc. Overall, it lasts as long as you would expect a lip gloss too. It is quite a thick lip gloss and I find that it can be a bit sticky and thick if I am not careful and watch how much I apply. As for kissable lips, my hubby refuses to kiss me when I wear this because the shine does look so noticeable. But then he is a bit of a spoilt sport and won't kiss me when I wear the majority of lip wear unless I catch him unaware.
The packaging is simple, the best thing about it being the bright blue colouring making it stand out from the majority of my other lip glosses. It is a simple lip applicator that you just squeeze a small amount out then apply without the aid of a wand or brush.
--The pricey bit--
You can buy this from the benefit counter for £13 or get it from Amazon for a much more reasonable £6.50. Benefit hasn't really disappointed with this one, I still like it, it just wouldn't be their best product and frankly I think £13 is way too much to pay for this.
I think that this is sadly a very average product and I don't think I would recommend this too a friend or indeed buy another one. It deserves a pretty average three out of five stars, it simply doesn't shine and doesn't brighten my life let alone my lips.
Just after Christmas I got a load of vouchers for make-up at Debenhams so I decided it would be a good idea to get some items from ranges that I dont normally try such as Urban Decay, Too Faced & Benefit and Ive been using those products ever since but oddly never got around to writing about them but as today Im attempting to get all my lip product reviews out the way I cant think of a more perfect time to start and I plan on starting with this one "Benefit California Kissin'" which attracted my attention for loads of reasons but mainly because I was really interested in whether this would do as it promised - the claims just seemed way too good to be true!
Price: Around £7
Stockists: Debenhams, House Of Fraser, Amazon ETC
For: Giving a healthy shin and gloss to your lips, can be used as a base or over the top of lip colour, freshens breath & makes your teeth appear whiter! Sounds really good doesnt it? But I reckon most people will be like me and wonder how on earth it managed to do all those things.
This gloss comes in a small blue and green tube with a slightly angled applicator which the gloss comes out of when you squeeze the tube - a lot like toothpaste. I know some people apply this with a brush but I really dont see the point that just seems like unnecessary effort when theres no need for it. The gloss goes on evenly and doesnt go all over your face when you apply it using the tube so my advice is dont faff around using a brush. The gloss itself is normal consistency - looks nice and runny but isnt and isnt so thick you cant get it out the tube and dont worry even though this is said to have a blue tinge (to make your teeth appear whiter) the gloss is totally clear to the naked eye - well maybe a slight shimmer but thats it!
Now being honest there are parts about this that I really like and others that I cant quite figure out whether they work. For starters I love the way this looks on my lips when I use it alone. I think this gives me the perfect polished pout look as my lips look proper glossy but feel really hydrated and moisturised at the same time - I dont find may glosses that do that. Over lip colour it is okay no different to any other gloss though I dont think and using it as a base doesnt work at all its simply to slippery and runny for that.
The mintiness is a very nice change and I believe it actually does help t freshen your breath great if your out and about and have forgotten the chewing gum and although you can only smell/taste the mint for a few minutes I believe it does carry on working after that. Sadly though I dont think this helps give the illusion that I have whiter teeth. Although I have been a smoker for many years and a regular coffee and fizzy pop drinker my teeth arent that stained so they dont need too much help to look whiter and they looked the same to me when I used this so in short I dont think this did live up to all its promises. I dont think a lipgloss can give you whiter teeth - it didnt on me anyway.
Sadly this didnt live up to may of its claims but its a nice change on my normal gloss anyway what with the added minty freshness but as a whitening gloss I dont think it works. If your looking for an everyday lip gloss then I do recommend this to an extent but if you want whiter teeth use something else!
Thanks For Reading

Ok, I have to come clean - I'm turning into a benefit addict. I'm getting a bit obsessed with their products. My latest buy has been their California Kissin lip gloss which, I have to say, when I initially say it I thought - this is just wrong, how can a blue lip gloss work?
But actually it works. The blue is subtle - you really can't notice it when it's on your lips. Plus it's meant to make you're teeth appear whiter. I'm not 100% convinced it works but I do feel they're a bit 'brighter' when I'm wearing it.
The texture of the gloss is great - very slick and moisturising - it really feels like it's doing you're lips some good rather than just sitting on top of them like a greasy slick. It's also minty fresh and doesn't have a greasy under taste like some flavoured lip glosses. This makes it really nice to use and a little seems to go a long way. I really like this product - it feels conditioning and fun to use. My lips feel moisturised, my teeth feel like they look a bit brighter and it's a funky product to use. Plus I think the price (especially if you go somewhere like ebay) is comparable to other premium lip glosses.
OK - I admit it - I have a serious lip gloss habit. There is no way I am going to confess just how many lipglosses I have on the go at any particular one time, but California Kissin has got to be amongst my favourites.
I would never have gone near a blue coloured lip gloss normally, but when I went to a department store to top up on my Dandelion stock once, the Benefit girl jumped on me (well, not literally) and tried this out on me. Seeing the look of shock on my face, she reassured me that this would not turn my lips blue, but instead turn my teeth magically whiter. Like, you, I was extremely dubious about the claim, but do you know what - it actually works!!
Somehow magically the "blue" lip gloss gives a fab natural sheen to your lips and must somehow reflect off your teeth, because they really do look whiter. My teeth, I must admit, are not the whitest around (too much red wine and coffee) but they do look much better when I wear this lip gloss.
You can wear this gloss on its own, or over Benefit's signature Benetint or a lip pencil. Either way, it looks just fab.
As a great extra benefit, there is a lovely minty fresh taste and smell to the lip gloss, which makes your mouth feel minty fresh and clean.
At £13, this lip gloss is about standard price for a premium product lip gloss, though obviously more pricey than a high street brand, but let's face it, it is much cheaper than having your teeth whitened - give it a go - you will be surprised!
Benefit is definately known for its eye catching packaging. This product is probably one of few whereby there isnt a hugely attractive eye catching packaging, but luckily the product speaks for itself.
I first found this product in my Benefit Justine Case kit. Once I tried the mini version of it I knew I had to have it. It is definately the best feeling gloss I have ever had. Dont be fooled by the bright blue colour of the gloss - dont worry your lips do not stay blue!
The packaging on this product does not tie in with the normal Benefit branding, but having said that I still feel that it is still very pretty and eye catching.
If you have ever tried this product you will know the feeling it gives to your lips. A wonderful tingley sensation! OK, its blue but I think this adds to message of the whole coolness of it all. When applied, this gloss gives a lovely shine and is not too subtle, not too harsh - just right id say. Another thing I absolutely love is the minty fresh smell it has, thus making you feel and smell fresher. Definately is something worth having.
This gloss is available for about £12.50 from Benefit counters. Abit pricey for sure but definately a good buy. Its a luxury product but its also something you will use and Im sure right until the end!
Love this product. Love the tingley effect. Love the minty smell. Love the effect it gives to your lips. Just love it.
Dont be fooled by the blue!
California kissin' - You haven't really been kissed 'til you've been California kissed!!
Being half American and loving everything California I was quite interested to try California kissin', a smile brightening lip shine from the Benefit cosmetics company. I am already a big Benefit fan, loving their quirky brightness and girly prettiness. They have such a fun range and you always hear about how good their beauty products are in the press and beauty magazines so you know that they are a well respected company.
Benefit is an America cosmetics company founded in 1976 by twin sisters in San Francisco. The girls are called Jean and Jane. Their visions was to create makeup with a whimsical candy store type theme. Nowadays the brand has over 1,000 makeup counters in more than 25 countries.
Like I've said above, California Kissin' is a lip shine which claims to brighten your smile once you have it on. I was interested to read this. I don't have the whitest teeth (they're definitely not American style teeth much to my distress) so I'm always looking for ways to make them appear a bit whiter and a bit brighter. The colour of this lip shine is actually a marine blue colour and has some sparkle to it. Once you apply it to your lips it actually has a subtle blue sheen to it. It's not completely blue and doesn't make you look like you are suffering from hypothermia but it definitely does have a blue tinge to it. I think it sort of blends in with your regular lip colour to give you a darker than natural look. The sparkle also adds a little bit of shimmer to your lips and looks like a nice lip shine rather than something you are using to make your smile look brighter. The shine itself is fairly sticky and gives you quite a shine. Sometimes I find it a bit too sticky once I have first applied it but that fades after a while whilst keeping the blue tinge and the sparkle.
I would say that it does give your teeth a bit of a pick me up. The blue colour is such a contrast to your teeth that it takes away from the teeth colour I think. I wouldn't say that it instantly gives you California style teeth but it's definitely a plus.
The lip shine is also advertised as helping to brighten your breath as well. The lip shine actually has a minty taste and smell to it which is actually quite strong and reminds me of toothpaste. I really like to use this after lunch if I don't have a toothbrush or gum handy and it really does help give me fresher breath and feel less self conscious if I am getting up close and personal with people!
The packaging is good. It comes in a plastic tube with a slanted top to help application onto the lips. You squeeze the tube to get the shine to come out and I find that the liquid smoothes onto your lips very well. Very simply, California kissin' is written on the front and well as the product name Benefit. The tube has 12.5g in it and costs £12.50, a little expensive for a lip shine but I have had it for a while now and have hardly seemed to use any of the product.
