*** How did I come across this product? ***
I pretty much stumbled across this product unintentionally, as I was scrolling through Facebook I noticed a picture of a friend of mine who was wearing a gorgeous coloured lipstick, in the comments she mentioned that it was Barry M Touch of Magic Lip Paint. I remember thinking how gorgeous the colour was and that I just had to get it. I bought this towards the end of 2012 and that's when it was called Touch of Magic Lip Paint but Barry M have now changed the name to Genie by the looks of things.
*** Concept - Green in the tube, pink on the lips! ***
It's a bright green lipstick, but when you actually apply the lipstick to your lips it reacts with the alkaline levels in your lips to create a pink shade. Basically the level of alkaline in your lips determines the shade so the resulting colour will be different for everyone which I think is pretty cool.
*** Packaging ***
The packaging is simple yet professional, it comes in the usual standard Barry M Lip stick tube which is square and black. It's a regular sized lipstick so fits perfectly in handbags and clutches. The bullet is a typical lipstick shape and as mentioned previously it is a very bright, lime green - the colour kind of reminds me of Kermit the Frog (I hope that hasn't put you off in any way).
*** Application ***
It's easy to apply, has a smooth, silky consistency and glides on with ease, it feels more like a lip balm instead of a lipstick. It's very moisturising and doesn't dry my lips out which is great! As soon as you apply it you can immediately see the 'magic' take place and gradually the pink shade gets brighter. It tends to last upto 4 hours on the lips before reapplying, it does leave a pink stain and is difficult to remove if you try to wipe it off just after applying it, this is great as it doesn't transfer onto cups and other materials but it is bad in the sense that if you put the lipstick on and decide it doesn't match your outfit (or for any other reason you decide to take it off) it is quite difficult to remove.
*** Price ***
It retails at £4.49 and I bought mine from Boots but you can also purchase it from Superdrugs or on the Barry M website. I have just checked on ASOS and they seem to be selling it at the same price and if you are a student you can also get 10% off! Hooray! You'll have to be quick though as it is currently out of stock so I am guessing it sells out fast.
*** Overall Opinion ***
Overall, the product works, it does what it claims to do which is great. But for me the colour wasn't brilliant, I think it was a bit too bright - a very bright fuchsia pink, and on my skin tone it looked tacky and for that reason I personally wouldn't buy it again as it just didn't suit my skin colour at all. If you are going to invest in this product it is a risk as you don't actually know how the colour is going to look on your lips but if you're curious I'd say go for it! I would definitely buy it again if it came out a lovely colour on my lips though as everything else is fantastic.
Barry m is a brand that sell very high quality beauty products at very affordable prices. Some of their products are very uniques and magical such as this lipstick. The lipstick is green in colour however it does not appear that way on the lips. Instead of showing up green it turns into a lovely pink shade. The shade of pink it turns depends on how much alkaline you have in your body. I had seen this lipstick in boots for ages but never tried it as I thought it was just a simple green lipstick . A colour that I would never wear unless it was Halloween. I only tried it a couple of weeks ago after reading a blog about it . I have to say since trying it I have been very impressed with the product. The colour is not too pale however it is not too bright but that is just how it looks on me. The texture of the lopstick is very nice as it just glides onto the lips like butter. It is a very moisturising lipstick and it makes the lips feel very soft and smooth. The lipstick is very long lasting and stays on for hours.the idea of the product is very gimmicky however I quite like that about it. It will certainly not be for everyone though. I certainly think a younger girl would love to recieve this asa gift though as it is so amazing how it works. I think it would make them very curious and they would be excited about the concept of the product. Hope this review helped you all xx Imogen
Barry M is one of those brands that do weird sounding make-up that actually works such as this lipstick. The lipstick is green coloured but don''t worry because you won''t be walking around with green lips as it actually changes to pink when it goes on your lips. I had seen the lipstick in shops for ages before I actually tried it as at first I was put off it thinking it sounded gimmicky but the colour is actually really nice and pretty. The actual shade of colour depends on the natural alkali in your lips so you won''t know just how bright it will be until you put it on. On my lips the colour is a medium pink colour that is very pretty but it is subtle and not too outrageous so is suitable for all sorts of occasions and I could wear the colour to work without feeling as though I had on too much make-up. It feels very smooth to apply and it just glides on my lips easily and doesn''t feel like it is too dry to apply. Once it is on it also feels moisturising and not drying and it hydrates my lips as well as giving them some colour. It is a long lasting lipstick and stays put for hours whereas some lipsticks bleed and come off within minutes of applying them so you spend the whole day keeping on applying them. This one can be put on and then you are free to get on with your day safe in the knowledge that it will stay put for a few hours. Although the colour is pretty on me it isn''t exciting and I was lucky it suited me but I do think the green to pink is still a bit gimmicky and I would probably just stick to buying a shade of lipstick that I liked rather than go for something that I wasn''t sure what I was going to be getting. I am glad I tried this as it always piqued my curiosity but I wouldn''t rush to get it again.
I am a huge Barry M fan and I own almost all of their products, so when this arrived on the market I couldn't wait to pick one up and try it out. I kinda expected it to be sold on novelty value, but who could resist trying a green lipstick that supposedly magically transforms into a beautiful pink matched specifically to your skin tone? Sounds great, doesn't it?
It looks identical to all Barry M's other lipsticks really, and until you see the garish green colour, you'd just expect it was an average lipstick. As you'd expect, you twist the base to reveal the lipstick inside. I personally quite like to do this in public loos and watch the looks of horror and disgust on the faces of women around me!
I begrudge calling this product lipstick, it isn't, it's more of a lip stain. For this reason I'd say be very careful with application, because if you make a mistake you're going to be stuck resembling a clown all day. This stuff really doesn't like to budge and I found I had to get makeup remover and a toothbrush on it to get it off, and even that left me with patchy pink blotchy looking lips.
The colour is ok, nothing to write home about.Apparently the natural alkali level of your lips will determine how pale or rich the shade of pink will be to most flatter your look. For me it goes on a reasonably subtle pink, but I find it gets a little too intense after time. The longer it's on, the brighter it gets. I much prefer to see the finished product as soon as I apply, rather than getting a shock catching a glimpse of myself in a mirror 2 hours later! As the day wears on, it can get quite patchy too which isn't a good look, ombrè lips? Maybe that's the next big thing?!
At £4.25, the 27g of product will go a long way. You'll use less than you would a lipstick, so you can expect this to really last you a good while.
WOULD YOU RECOMMEND THIS PRODUCT?
I would still recommend trying this, because I think it's very individual how it turns out for each person. Although it can go blotchy, it doesn't look awful when it does, and it's much less hassle to sort out a bit of blotchiness than to constantly reapply lipstick.
As someone who isn't particularly knowledgeable about beauty products, I bought this after receiving a recommendation from a friend. It's the best item of make up I own by a long way. The fact that the colour matches the alkaline level in the wearer's lips is incredibly clever and a nifty quirk, as well as meaning that it suits everyone. There's no need to worry about the colour being too bright, or too dark; to test this, I lent it to my mother and to my best friend. The colour came up slightly differently on all three of us and looked fantastic.
The other thing I really like about this product is the feel of it on my lips. While some lipsticks look odd and give the lips a strange texture, this is soft and feels great. The moisturising quality of it is great; it looks and feels great. It's also perfect for a work environment, or a night out, or just a shopping trip round town, as it's not too flashy but perfectly accentuates one's natural features.
The price is reasonable; I bought mine from Boots for just under a fiver, which compared to other make up brands is a bit of a bargain. I'd recommend trying it out first if there's a tester available in the shop, just so that you can see what colour it appears on your lips, due to the fact that it is different for everyone. (As I explained before, this isn't just a cheeky marketing gimmick, it really does do this!) Strange as it might look to apply a green colour to your lips in public, the final shade is definitely worth the money! It takes a moment or two for the colour to fully appear, but once it does, I hope you'll be as satisfied as I am! Definitely a purchase that I'd recommend, especially if you aren't fully familiar with beauty products and don't really know what colour lipstick would suit you.
As soon as I heard about this product I just had to have it! It really is magic, so much fun watching the different colours come through on different people.
As with all Barry M products the packaging is always good, the lipstick itself is however smaller than other lipstick makes. But this isnt really a problem as it will still last you a long time.
At first look I was a little bit weary trying it for the first time as the green colour does make you a little worried. However as soon as you apply to your lips the magic happens. The genuis formula and technology allows a different type of reddy pink to come through depending on your natural lip colour.
A gorgous vivid berry pink/red was my shade which I do have to say perfectly suits my complexion and my personal style. My sister also gave it ago and she ended up with a slightly paler shade of pink which also suited her perfect.
The feel of the lipstick is so smooth and creamy it glides across the lips so easily. One glide of the lipstick and you will get full coverage. It says it lasts 8 hours, however I would say it lasts much longer than that. I applied it for an evening out and it was still put very, very late on in the evening with no need to reapply!!!
This lip paint cost me £4.25 from Amazon.co.uk.
The lip paint is an awful green colour but it doesn't go on green, it's turns pink depending on the alkaline level of your lips. I'm not really sure how it does this but it does and it's a bit of fun really! Sometimes the lip paint looks really pink on me, this is usually when i'm not wearing anything else on my lips. If I am wearing something else on my lips, such as Vaseline, then the lip paint comes out a little darker. I guess it just depends on the day and how your lips are feeling. It's a great idea though and you don't get any hint of green at all, so don't be put off by the initial green colour as it doesn't turn out green!
The lip paint is easy to apply. You simply twist it up to apply and twist it down again to store the lip paint. The lip paint has a creamy formula that glides over the lips with ease. It is quite soothing and moisturising and it helps prevent chapped lips if used on a regular basis. If I am using the lip paint over chapped lips then it helps to protect them but sometimes it can be a little drying.
Overall this is a fun piece of make-up. You never really know how vibrant the colour result will be and it's fun not knowing. The colour lasts for a good few hours before it starts to fade. It's great value too as it's under five pounds. I would recommend it. Plus it's Barry M so you know you'll be getting a good quality lipstick.
I recently went a bit mad buying up some Barry M products. I was attracted to their bright colours and cheap prices and the fact that most of the products seemed to be really good when I was testing them in the shop.
One thing I bought that I didn't actually get to try out in the shop because they didn't have a tester was the magic lip paint. I had the original lip paint and liked it and had heard about the magic one and was curious to try it out.
The touch ofmagic lip paint is a little different and weird in that it is a bright green stick instead of being a pinky colour or red. It doesn't actually go on your lip green though and it is formulated to work with the alkaline levels in your lips to go the exact shade of pink that should match your skin tone. So in other words the stick is green but it goes on pink and will be a different shade of pink for everyone depending on the alkali in your lips.
I'm a sucker for a gimmick and was really excited to try it out. The lipstick goes on nicely and it isn't too hard and waxy. When you slick it on your lips it doesn't feel heavy and as though it is coating your lips in a heavy waxy coating which is good because I personally don't like my lips to feel too clogged and that's why I normally go for a gloss instead of a lipstick.
I was a bit concerned that when I first applied the lipstick my lips didn't go pink. They didn't go green which was a relief but I expected the colour to be instant and I didn't realise that it would take a minute or so for the colour to develop.
When it did develop the pink was a lovely mid pink colour that had a nice richness to it. It is the type of pink that probably wouldn't have caught my eye on the shelf and I don't own any other lip colour this shade but it does actually suit me perfectly.
The colour has a lovely sheer sheen to it as well and it contains aloe vera which makes it feels nice and moisturising on my lips.
Longevity is good with it especially for a lipstick which I find that no matter how careful I am rubs off on to glasses etc.
This probably lasts on average about 5 to 6 hours before I need to reapply which I think it a good amount of time for a lipstick especially one that doesn't come from a premium brand like Lancome or Clinique.
I bought my touch of magic lip paint in boots where it cost me £4.49 and was also part of a 3 for 2 promotion.
This colour-changing Lip Paint seems to be a real source of fascination - whenever I see a tester, it's the only one that's been worn down to a little stub. Its witchy green charms must have worked on me too, since I grabbed one on sight...
PACKAGING: The case is the average for Barry M's Lip Paints, all-black and quite smart. The sticker states this colour is code "tmlp" - despite being part of the Lip Paint range, this seems to be counted as a separate item without a number, so don't confuse it for the regular green Lip Paint if you're buying it online!
COLOUR: Touch of Magic's big gimmick is that it isn't actually green (and it doesn't apply green, no matter how hard you try). Instead, it's a sheer balmy lipstick that turns pink when applied, and the exact shade is dictated by the alkali levels of your lips. It's a great concept, theoretically yielding a shade of pink tailored to your lips and skin tone. In my case, it's always a deep vivid pink, and I'm pleased with that result. If possible, swatch a bit of the product on your lips before buying, to see if you get a pink you're happy with.
APPLICATION: Like the rest of the Lip Paint range, Touch of Magic is smooth to apply. If anything, it feels even softer and smoother - slightly glossy without being wet. The colour payoff isn't as immediate, since the pink effect takes a moment to fully appear. Its sheer nature makes it very easy to apply and top up on the go, since a hurried swipe doesn't look obvious.
WEAR: It's advertised as being waterproof and lasting up to eight hours, which is asking a lot, and it doesn't really deliver. It transfers and wears off after a few hours, but it does so more subtly than other Lip Paints. Touch of Magic still wins a point here over Barry M's other lipsticks, as I find it far less drying and uncomfortable. I'm not sure if it's the Aloe Vera, or the balm-like formula, or both, but it feels nourishing and light on the lips. It tends to leave a pink stain after fading, but it's nothing too unpleasant.
I would love it if Barry M produced more products like this, novelty colours or no, since Touch of Magic is one of their better formulas. This is one of my favourite Lip Paints: both a good colour and good product to wear, even after the novelty of the green has worn off. At £4.49 it's worth trying out, and if the pink doesn't suit you, it might still be worth the hilarity of whipping out a green lipstick and being greeted with looks of horror.
I bought this Barry M touch of magic lip paint out of pure curiosity - how could Barry M live up to the promise that a green lipstick would turn pink once applied? It baffled me and the quirkiness of the product meant that I bought it as soon as I saw it. I have used other Barry M lip paints in the past such as marshmellow and baby pink and been pleasantly surprised that such a cheap lipstick would work so well!
The lipstick is encased in a black plastic casing with a removable lid. The casing feels very sturdy as it is quite thick plastic and I have often dropped it (mainly in a club as I drunkenly fumble for my mobile phone or change for the taxi home!) the casing has stood up to all of the mishaps and still remains in good condition. It has Barry M written on the top of the lid in a swirly, fancy font and has the twistable mechanism to wind the lipstick up and down.
The main selling point of this item is that the lipstick is green. This is until it reacts with the pH level of your lips and this changes it from green to a shade of pink. This shade of pink differs depending on the pH level of your lips, for me the lipstick turns my lips into a very pink and vibrant pink colour but for my housemate it turns her lips into a very light pink!
The lipstick is just like any other Barry M lip paint it glides on easily and this one in particularly doesn't add a sheen to the lips so it is quite matte which I like as you don't often find a good matte lipstick for this price. It is very soft too and compliments my complexion. This lipstick set me back a mesely £4.59 from Boots and I use it all the time. My main hype about this product is that it stays on the lips for ages and drinking/eating etc fail to remove the lipstick which is a big bonus! I would highly recommend this product.
I am quite a big fan of Barry M products in general - mainly because I think they are good quality, sometimes funky products that really don't cost the earth. Make-up (and yes, a lot of my make-up) is extortionate in price, but it's really nice to come across a product now and then which is just really good value - and I feel that the Barry M Touch of Magic Lip Paint fits this category perfectly.
The first thing anyone would notice about this lipstick is that it's green. Now, trust me, green is not a good colour for lips and I, like most people, would not choose to apply green lipstick to my lips. My punk days are far behind me and I don't think I'll be going down that road again any time soon! However, although the lipstick is green, once you apply it to your lips, the colour shows up as pink - and quite a nice pink at that. The science behind this lipstick is that it is the pH of the skin on your lips that determines the overall shade of pink that will show up. For me, this generally means a quite dark and rich pink, but for my sister it is more of a hot pink. I generally find that colour does not vary for me and so it stays a dark rich pink, regardless of when I put it on.
This lipstick feels smooth and rich when applied and feels like it moisturises as well as protects. It contains aloe vera and so this contributes to the overall condition that my lips stay in, and I do not find that my lips dry out when I'm wearing this product. Generally, I would say that the lipstick stays in place for about 3 hours before it needs refreshing, but it doesn't bleed or crack - and so for that three hours it's looking very good.
The lip paint cost me £4.49 direct from the Barry M website - although I have seen it in Boots on occasion for around the same price. I think this is a fantastic price and really I can't knock it! I would recommend that you try the lipstick on before buying it to check what colour your lips will go because the shades do differ quite a lot. However, if you like the colour, I do recommend this product because it's quality, it's different, it moisturises and it just feels nice when it's applied.
I bought this as a 3 for 2 at Superdrug, and pretty much bought it for the laugh to see what colour it came out as. And I was pleasantly surprised!
It looks green and pretty daunting, but comes out in various shades of pinks based on the alkaline on your lips. I like the vintage look, and was so lucky when my colour came out as a bright vivid pink/red. A few of my friends tried it and it came out as various shades of baby pink, leading down to brown/pink.
This is a great fun product, and as a massive fan of Barry M products, I will keep using this as it does quite often change too. It only costs a few pounds, like other Barry M cosmetics, and is a good staple in your make up bag as the colour can change!
Overall, definitely worth buying, a fun and cheap product with good effects!
The stick is green, the colour payoff is pink! Not only is it pink, it also promises to create the perfect pink for your personal skin tone. Now as I'm happily clicking through my BarryM online order I know full well this is always going to be a swatch and ditch lipstick. I just know it. I've been here before (thank you DuWop and TooFaced), but dammit... I... just... can't... help... myself... click, click, add to cart, give Paypal password.
I have to also admit to being on the edge of my seat with barely contained excitement waiting for the post when it arrives, and then to tearing out my new lipstick and running to the bathroom with it clutched in my hot, sweaty hand.
The result? Yes, it is a green lipstick. And yes, when you put it on it turns pink. I'm not sure what the chemical reaction truly is but my guess would be that it involves some kind of PH acid/ alkaline type test and that the shade it turns depends on the PH levels in your skin rather than in it instinctively guessing what colour your hair, eyes, and skin are. Do people with darker skin have different PH readings? I'm not a scientist but I'm pretty sure the answer to this will be a no. I also found that it had a slightly funny smell and that the formula was drying on my lips.
Was I disappointed in my purchase? Not at all. I treated it all like a huge science experiment and tried it with different lip treatments and glosses underneath to see how the colour changed each time. I was also left with pretty pink lips for a good six hours afterwards. I can see how, if the colour wasn't exactly correct for you the staining effect could be a little tiny problem for the next six hours, but if you are lucky, you might find that TMLP becomes your absolute favourite lip stain.
I also... even knowing that I personally wasn't going to keep it and wasn't 100% convinced on the formula, ended up buying it for several of my friends for Christmas. After all, it is undoubtably an afternoon's fun, and at £4.25, it isn't going to break the bank for that afternoon of fun!
I'm a massive fan of the Barry M make-up range, always have been. My Mother was quite gothic during her younger days and always said that Barry M were, at one time, the only make-up range to cater for such styles. She still insists it is the best make-up range available today and so continues to buy only Barry M products. Subsequently, when I got to that age where I wanted to to experiment with make-up, I was left to rummage through her make-up back and work with whatever I could find, Barry M products.
I started to buy my own make-up and stuck to what I knew. I would always go straight to the Barry M range every time I entered Boots or Superdrug etc. Now days I use a much more diverse range of make-up brands but when it comes to lipsticks and eyeshadows, Barry M is still the majority within my make-up collection.
In general Barry M products do not only come in a wide range of colours and styles but are also of a high quality. What I love most about Barry M is their products are not tested on animals, something which is very difficult to find without spending an arm and a leg.
I found this particular lipstick in my local Superdrug store around a year ago. I was instantly shocked at the colour, Barry M are known for their more 'out there' colours but I'd never found green lipstick before. Out of curiosity, I rubbed the tester product along my hand to see what colour it was on, I never expected it to turn pink! I immediately handed over the £4.49 sale price to the cashier and brought the lipstick without really considering if I would ever wear it. I'm not really a pink person. I simply wanted to show everyone my amazing colour changing lipstick!
I got home and applied the lipstick, it was a little to vibrant for me. Although a really nice shade, just something I would typically wear. I did, however, find that if I rubbed my finger across the tip of the lipstick and then applied the lipstick via my finger it gave a great colour without it being so in your face. I wore it regularly like this and always got plenty of compliments! Applying a little bit of lipstick over the top made it look even better.
I found this product to look great like this for day to day wear or to add finishing touches to an outfit I was about to hit the town in. I really loved it and ended up going out and replacing it straight after I had used up the last of the lipstick.
Not only do you get style with this lipstick but you also get comfort and reliability. The lipstick is waterproof and claims to last up to 8 hours. I think 8 hours may be a bit of an exaggeration but it does last a long time! I very rarely needed to re-apply this lipstick when I wore it. It didn't fade when I had a drink or any of the usual every day tasks that normally rub off lipstick. To top it off it wasn't sticky when applied and it didn't feel heavy or uncomfortable on my lips either, something I always have trouble finding with lipsticks.
All in all, I adore this product. Another amazing, high quality cosmetic item from Barry M. This lipstick has become a make-up essential for me and I think it would for a lot of other people who decided to try it as well. Something I strongly recommend you do!
I love Barry M makeup and got this around 3 weeks ago after seeing it in Superdrug. I mainly bought it out of curiosity due to the greenness! I paid £4.25 which i was happy with paying.
The lip paint is designed to have different results for everyone - no one will get the same colour. It works by how much alkali is in your lips. The more you have, the redder your lips will go.
The actual lipstick is green, but when applied it is clear in colour like a clear lipbalm, after a few minutes it will start pigmentating into a darker pink/red.
The packaging/lipstick tube is attractively styled and easy to use. It's a sleek but chunky enough to grip well and is black in colour. The lid reads 'Barry M' in elegant golden font.
I tried this on my hand in the shop to get an idea of the colour, and it was a light pink. When applied to my lips though, it just looked like a clear lipbalm as mentioned before but after 20 minutes it was bright red - far too red for my liking, and it was impossible to get off! It did not look very natural at all and was completely OTT, there is no matte finish and the coverage isn't great, this is more of a lipgloss/stain then a lipstick.
As it was so red, this obviosly means that my lips contain lots of alkali which was interesting to find out.
This lipstick lasted for 2 days after application which would of been great if it hadn't been as red, so obviously this can be either an advantage or disadvantage depending on individual results!
No one will get the same results, so you aren't guarenteed to get the excact 'look' you're after. I would reccomend trying a tester before buying (on your lips, not hand), to see for yourself the shade you get.
Overall it's not amazing, do not buy this expecting a certain result - you are not guarenteed a brilliant result. It is more of a novelty product than a high quality lipstick, and i definetly got lots of fun out of it (EG: my friends been absoloutly horrified when i pulled out a bright green lipstick!) but i will not be purchasing this again!
Contains aloe vera and stays on for up to 8 hours / The alkaline level of your lips determines the colour pale or rich pink!
