~Super Soft Eye Crayon~
Barry M offer a few different eye liner products including a kohl pencil, liquid liner and a glitter pencil. For the purpose of this review, I will be discussing the 'Super Soft Eye Crayon'.
This eye crayon is available in 10 different shades including black, pink, blue and green with matte or shimmering finishes. This eye crayon has an 'extra soft formulation'. Unlike a regular eye pencil, eye crayon is a much thicker crayon with a long, clear lid protecting the tip of the crayon.
~Price and Availability~
Barry M Eye Crayon is available from www.barrym.com, Boots and Superdrug though the full shade range only seems to appear on the brand website. Expect to pay around £3.99 for each crayon.
I have recently become very fond of the Barry M make up range. I bought the eye crayon in shade black as I was trying to make up the amount I was spending to over a certain amount to get a free gift! £3.99 is a very fair price to pay for a decent quality eye liner especially as I have previously splashed out up to £16.00 in the past!
I would say this eye crayon is more suited to someone who is confident when applying eye liner. If you are quite new to using it, I would recommend a thinner kohl pencil. I have been using eye liner for many years and have used a few chunky pencils so this one was perfectly fine for me to use. I prefer to use this one over my regular eye liners for when I want a thicker, bolder line of colour. I consider my eyes to be my best feature and like to doll them up with some eye liner, eye shadow and mascara on a regular basis.
Gripping this eye crayon is very easy. It is smaller in length than the average kohl pencil but thicker. I opted for black as my shade choice as I favour having a black liner define my eyes. There is a good selection of shades though for those who are a little more adventurous than me. The actual crayon is quite thick at the base but not overly thick at the tip. It is noticeably thicker than a kohl pencil tip though.
Using this eye crayon is very simple. I only apply it to my waterline as I have never been confident with applying any eye liner to my eyelid area. When brand new, the tip isn't overly sharp or pointy but it certainly tickles a little when in use. After a few uses, the tip of the crayon is much flatter and less tickly which I prefer. I love the consistency of this crayon. It glides across my waterline very smoothly and I have never experienced any dragging or discomfort. The crayon is moist and soft but not too soft that it breaks easily. It is a very durable crayon.
This black colour from this eye crayon is immediately noticeable with one complete sweep across my waterline. I like to apply two sweeps for a stronger intensity. This eye crayon produces a bold, thick line of colour across my waterline which looks neat and tidy. The look is a little more intense than that created by a simple kohl pencil as the black is much richer yet still looks soft and creamy. I can't 'feel' it on my waterline as it is lightweight and incredibly gentle near my sensitive eyes.
Barry M do not specify if this eye crayon is waterproof but I have found it to last well on my waterline despite me having general runny eyes with no smudging. The black colour remains strong and noticeable for several hours and is still acceptably noticeable after 6 or 7 hours without needing topped up. Any remaining eye crayon is easy to remove with some make up remover.
I would say that this is an excellent eye liner product. It is easy to use, lasts well and creates an intense, eye-shaping line of colour. I would say the thicker line of colour would appeal more to the younger wearers. I love the way it looks on my eyes. As this is a chunky crayon, it needs to be sharpened using a larger sharpener. I have one of these thankfully but those who are used to kohl pencils may need to make an additional purchase of a sharpener. The crayon sharpens well and doesn't fall apart. I find I only need to sharpen it after a few uses and so far, the crayon doesn't seem to be getting much smaller.
I like to replace my eye liners every 6 months but don't expect that I will have used all of this eye crayon in that space of time.
Overall 5 stars - thanks for reading :)
I know these are supposed to be for eyeshadow but I have to say the Black eyecrayon is perfect for eyeliner. I know I'm not the only person who does this so my review will be more based upon using this crayon as an eyeliner rather than an eyeshadow!
HOW DOES IT LOOK?
Its a big chunky pencil- probably the size of a chunky crayon. My black one is plain black with simple gold lettering on stating the usual- brand, product, Barry M's company address & website. It comes with a clear lid which is great for me because you can see how sharp its looking and whether you'll need to dig out a sharpener before using it.
This pencil goes really easily onto skin so I can see why it would be a great eyeshadow aswell as eyeliner! I actually started using this as an eyeliner back when I was around 17 and not so expert at applying eyeliner. I found this transferred onto my eyes much easier than the eyeliners I could afford. I was less like to make a mistake with it. It also doubled up well to those fancy dress nights where draw on freckles (school girls) or draw on whiskers & nose (cats) were compulsory. They worked much better than face paint and stayed there for quite a while too. As eyeliner it definitly has staying power.
It can go quite a while without needing a sharpen if only used as eyeliner and can easily be sharpened by one of those two hole sharpeners you can pick up in stationary and some makeup aisles.
There are other colours of course other than black (which I think is a little harsh for eyes as eyeshadow) these are: Brown, Green, Matt Green, Blue, Matt Blue, Matt Turquoid, Purple, Matt Purple & Matt Pink.
This eye crayon currently goes for around the £4 mark which I'd say is decent considering how long it lasts. Im sure mine was cheaper but I did get it quite a while ago.
I love Barry M makeup as it's so affordable yet brilliant quality so I was really pleased when I recieved one the Barry M super soft eye crayons in one of my Christmas stockings. I love the Barry M eyeliner as it's such good quality and soft and these eyeliners are just the same as the original Barry M eyeliners but slightly more creamy and they're also a bit 'stubbier' - mine is around half the size of my original Barry M eyeliner and a little thicker which I think is cute and it makes it ideal as a little travel size eyeliner as I can pop it into my small makeup bag when i'm staying over at my boyfriends.
This eyeliner is available in various colours, and while I personally prefer the darker colours such as black and grey, there's also more vibrant and daring colours such as purple, green, pink etc. I've got this eyeliner in black as I think this is the colour that makes my eyes look that bit more sexy and bold, and it also suits me more than a lighter colour would due to my dark brown hair. I love creating a smokey eye with this particular pencil as it goes on nice and thick it's so easy to blend. I don't think it's a great eyeliner to use if you want a nice, neat, very subtle line of eyeliner as the nib is pretty thick, and even when i'm pressing down lightly and at an angle it still goes on pretty thick.
Texture wise, this is really soft, which is both good and bad. It's good because it obviously feels nice and gentle and doesn't drag on my lashline, but bad because it seems to melt pretty easier and it therefor becomes patchy and makes it look old and like it's been on since the previous day - not a good look, even I don't like this and I love the whole grungey look. It is also not waterproof meaning that it smudges or runs even when it comes into contact with the tiniest bit of moisture - for example when I sneeze it does definetly effect my eyeliner and it doesn't look neat or precise at all.
The lasting power is okay but unfortunetly even though it lasts for around 6-8 hours it doesn't look 'fresh' or precise, it just looks messy and slightly old even after a few hours, which I think is probably due to the soft texture. I do like the texture however it does feel a little greasy. Price wise, this eyeliner is good value at £3.99 per eyeliner which is a decent price for such a well pigmented and soft, decent quality eyeliner. Overall, the eyeliner's good but not perfect..
* Good value for money
* Range of colours to choose from
* Practically sized packaging - neat and cute
* Easy to blend
* Well pigmented
* Lasting power
* Looks old and worn after just a few hours unless reapplied frequently
* Melts easily due to soft, creamy texture resulting in patchy eyeliner
* Not waterproof
Overall, I would reccomend this eyeliner. I personally do not think it's for day time wear though as it is a bit too smokey and doesn't stay neat and precise, and so I will instead be wearing this when I go clubbing or to a party and want a big dramatic look of overlly smokey eyes.
I have quite small eyes, so when I was told that using a white eye pencil on the inside bottom lid (on the water line) would give the appearance of bigger eyes I thought I'd give it a go! I decided to buy the Barry M eye liner crayon in white as I have bought many Barry M products before and they have always been great quality for a low price. I got my white eye liner from Superdrug for only £2.95 (bargain price like their other products!). The eye liner was great quality, went on really smoothly and was very opaque. Unfortunately turns out the water line thing doesn't actually work, and as my mum put it 'makes you look really chavy!' However if you want to give yourself a mod/futurist look and use it to out line your eye it works great! The pencil also sharpens without cracking, something I always have problems with with eye pencils.
Barry M is a British brand - Started by Barry Mero in 1982, Barry M has always led the way for brightly coloured, outrageous cosmetics.
Barry M has gained a bit of a cult following, and is a favourite for most of those wanting to make a statement with their make-up.
Barry Ms Super Soft Eye Crayon is perfect for helping you to create that perfect smokey eyed look, or just adding some intense eye colour. It comes in 10 colours, 5 which are 'shimmery' and 5 which have just been released that are Matt. The colours range from shades of purple, green, blue and pink to more 'mundane' blacks and browns. So there should be something for everyone.
The design on the pencil is very simple, just a mirrored gold coloured font on the main body of the pencil saying 'Barry M. Super Soft Eye Crayon' (I love the fact they call it crayon, makes you feel like a 5 year old again with your crayolas!) The lid on this is just a simple clear pull of cap, but I find it holds well and is more than safe to be tossed into your bag while you're out and about.
The pencil itself is pretty chunky, so you can get a good grip on it and it's very easy to move while applying for a smooth application.
The results of this pencil are pretty good. I've only used the Black one so far but find it's really highly pigmented and because it's so soft, very easy to apply and blend for (as they promised) a rather smokey eyed look.
The pencil is also pretty versatile, I use it in two ways to create either a soft or more dramatic look.
Like, if you apply it to your upper lash line it makes your lashes look really thick and full at the base - and I find I had the best results with the product using it this way.
You can also apply it to your top lid, like you would with liquid eyeliner. As I said, this is really highly pigmented so it great for a dramatic OTT look. It goes on really quite smoothly too, but as the kohl is soft it smudges a lot so I'd only really recommend using it in this way if you're looking to blend it a little - if you're after a precise, sharp line on your lid you need to use Liquid Eyeliner.
My only problem with this pencil was when I first got it. I found it really messy to use, and that it clumped around my eyelashes which wasn't very nice. (And really messy to get off, enter extreme panda eyes!) But this is mainly my fault, as I'm used to harder kohl liners and must have been pressing on a little too hard.
Now I've had it for a while (and figured out how to use it properly!!) I really love this pencil. I find it's great for creating a more dramatic eye look, plus it seems to wear pretty well thought out the day. I did have a few problems with under eye smudging, but nothing major that wasn't easily fixed with a baby wipe.
Only tips for this product - Keep it sharpened for more precise application and only press very lightly when applying.
The Barry M Super Soft Eye Crayon is £3.95 from most Barry M Stockists.
Recently I've become a bit of an obsessive with Barry M products. There are 3 main reasons for this.
1. I don't think that you need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on makeup and Barry M produce great quality make-up which isn't expensive.
2. Their range of products is extensive, interesting and colourful.
3. As with point number 2. the colours are bright and bold and the makeup has great lasting power.
So without needing much persuasion, I headed off to my local Superdrug to see what other Barry M wonders I might leave with that day and I came across the Supersoft Eye Crayon which is a chunky eye pencil that comes in 5 different shades: Purple, Black, Brown, Green and Blue. I had been looking for a while for a purple eye crayon and at only £3.95, it seemed like pretty good value! The pencils themselves are easy to distinguish between as each different shade has the same colour stick. They also come with a clear plastic lid cover to protect the nib of the pencil and are covered over the top with a peel-away plastic covering for safety and hygiene.
The purple crayon in particular is a shimmery lilac colour - not a dark purple and the application was fairly easy. I would recommend applying this even as a light eyeshadow for subtle shimmer on the eyelids. As an eyeliner it works particular well on the upper and lower lashlines and glides on smoothly. I would be wary applying this to the waterline of the lower lashes as the shimmer might cause irritation.
The colour itself is very vibrant and I'm very chuffed with this product! It's also great for smudging and blending. For sharp definition this might not be the best kind of pencil to use as it's meant for smudging and for that softer or smokier look, depending on the shade you choose. The colour also stays put for hours which is important as so many eye pencils/crayons barely last 10 minutes on me!
The pencil is also very easy to sharpen, unlike some pencils which seem to be made from a fake 'wood' looking plastic and get stuck in the pencil sharpener - not good!
Overall, I'm very pleased with this product from Barry M, it's cheap, is very versatile, application is easy, desired effect more than reaches my expectations and this is something I will continue to buy! It would be great if they had a wider range of colours, but that is the only thing I can think of where Barry M might improve in the range.
Barry M products can be bought from Superdrug stores, Boots and www.BarryM.com
These Barry M eye crayons come in an array of colours, the reason why I got these is because you can't really find many of these bright, vibrant shades with other brands. The bright rainbow shades is what makes these crayons stand out, some of them have glitter in them, others have a pearl finish and some just look matte.
It's not safe to apply the glitter ones to the waterline because it could cause irritation or for the glitter to accidentally scratch the eye, so it's safer not to do it.
I got the pencil in bright green/blue with some silver glitter in it. I tried it on over my eye shadow, near my upper lash line. I didn't feel that I wanted to smudge it because I liked the defined, vibrant, sparkly look it gave to my eye.
Sadly for me however, the look didn't last long as after an hour or so, the liner got smudged and smeared onto my crease area of my eye. That just looked messy and was not the look I was going for.
I would say that these pencils are nice as they come in lovely colours but they're just not budge proof so aren't good enough for me. I only paid about 3 pounds for mine so it didn't set me back too much and my sis likes this now so it hasn't gone to waste.
When I go out, I like to really glam my eyes up with funky colours and dark mascara, but after a while I got bored of my collection, and went out looking for some new colours.
Enter.. Barry M Super Soft eye crayons. I found them in Superdrug, and loved them! They were only a couple of quid, so I grabbed a couple. I couldnt wait to get home and try them, hoping I was not going to be disappointed and wanting them to be as vibrant as they looked.
Not only was I not let down, I fell in love with Barry M!! They really are super soft and just glide on so smoothly and easily. The colours really were vibrant and stood out really well, which is just what I wanted.
I now have a large collection of them in all kinds of colours, red, tourqoise, blue, lime green, silver, gold, purple......... definately worth it, especially as they are so cheap!
They last for hours, I have about 8 or 9 hours and the colour has not faded, and they only smudge if you wipe your eyes quite hard.
~ Introduction ~
I've recently discovered Barry M cosmetics and after having bought some of their impressive nail paints, I decided to try some of their other products too. I've always used cream or powder shadows on the lower eye lids but I knew they were rather designed for the upper eye lid area, so I got intrigued when I saw the lovely looking chunky crayon in their range. I bought the Barry M Super Soft Eye crayon, because I found the shade nice and because I thought that it wasn't going to drying to the skin as an eye shadow would, it being specifically designed for the eye lids.
~ The packaging ~
The crayon is like a chunky colour pencil, with the name and logo written on it in golden letters. The outer colour of the crayon is the same shade as the crayon itself and has a simple transparent plastic cap.
~ Appearance & Application ~
The creamy crayon has a light but fairly greasy texture and is rather oily than moist. It comes off easily, there's not need to press on to the lids, but you do have to glide it over at least 4 - 5 times to get an even colour with a decent coverage.
The crayon I applied on my lids took a few minutes to dry so you may want to wait a few minutes with eyes closed then go about your business. The look is rich, intense and smooth and because of the oils in the crayon, it looks glowing and somewhat shimmery. A very nice effect indeed, if it lasted, of course.
~ Results ~
Simply, it doesn't last. I didn't realize until now how easily eye lids get oily as the skins natural oils appear back on its surface so any make up with an oily texture will have an effect of practically slipping off it almost instantly. Half an hour after application, the colour disappeared, only leaving a smeary, oily mark where it had been on before. Not impressive.
~ The solution ~
Basically, if you want a crayon to last, it either has to be of very good quality, that's moist to apply but then dries and stays put, much like the acrylic type eye pens. To fix the problem, I applied some of my Ivory shade True Match Compact Powder I use in winter, to act as a dry base, so the crayon will be able to hold onto and stay. You can use a concealer pen or make up base cream to do the same job, though I didn't want to waste even more money buying those for something that should work on its own in the first place.
Lo, and behold, the crayon stayed on and lasted for the entire day! After 4 - 5 hours, it was still on and only slightly faded, which is fair enough, I was pleased with the result.
~ Conclusion ~
To sum up, a lovely looking crayon, that certainly doesn't dehydrate the delicate eye lid area, however it doesn't last. To make it last, some concealer or make up base should be used underneath. Not recommended.
