      ~~~What is Smallville?~~~
      Smallville is a very popular and successful television series that is currently in its eight season. It tells the story of Clark Kent's teenage years, before he became the Superman that we know and love from the movies and from TV's The New Adventures of Superman. As a youth Clark is only just coming to terms with his powers and trying to fit them into his life as he grows up in the town of Smallville. The show also covers his relationships with Lex Luthor and crush Lana Lang, as well as various 'baddies'. It stars Tom Welling, Michael Rosenbaum and Kristen Kreuk.
      ~~~The magazine~~~

      Like most current TV programs, Smallville is promoted and milked as much as possible to get the most amount of money for its creators. And so like many sci-fi and teen programs before it, Smallville has its own magazine for fans of the show.

      It is produced by Titan Magazines, who also release fan magazines for shows like Charmed, Heroes, Lost, Supernatural, Star Trek and Torchwood. You can find out more about all of these on the Titan Magazines website, which also gives a comprehensive list of the features included in the current Smallville magazine if you want to check it out before purchasing a copy to see whether it covers the actors or stories you are most interested in.

      The magazine comes out once every two months, so there are six issues a year. So far 27 issues have been released. It costs a huge £3.99 so is a comparable cost to a book, and as such will need to be pretty impressive to satisfy me! However you can get the magazine up to 15 per cent cheaper if you subscribe to it through the offers in the magazine or on the website.

      The magazine is A4 sized and quite slim. The copy I have has just 68 pages, including the front and back covers. I have gone through and counted the ones which are advertisements and found that there are a total of 12 ad pages, leaving just 56 pages with magazine content on.

      The magazine contains a variety of features. There is a letters page, usually at least a couple of interviews, a current news section, a poster and often articles on the Superman comics.

      With regards to in depth written content, though, the magazine does not have much. Of the 56 pages related to Smallville, a high proportion of them are full page photos of the cast or full page drawings from the comics, perhaps with only the title of an article added to them. Even when an article seems to take up 4 or 5 pages, a large amount of those pages will feature big stills from the show and so you will find there is very little meat to the article and it can be read in a couple of minutes. Even the interviews are disappointingly cursory and contain a lot of filler and only a small amount of input from the interviewee.

      Of course if you are the sort of person who really loves photos of the different cast members then this will be a great magazine for you. However if you are looking for a lot of written content you will be disappointed. For £3.99 I think this magazine is nowhere near good enough. Die hard fans of Smallville will want to collect them anyway, but for the casual viewer this magazine will probably not be worth the money.
