      Advantages

      Disadvantages

      Practical

This laptop is fantastic if your a person in which travels alot on train, but not practical for home use for example you tube or face book. Personally I only think this laptop is good for mainly company use not for individual use.

The laptops speed and efficiency is great, i click on my start tool and it opens google in a blink (providing the 3G/4G Wifi) is at a good coverage.

The speakers are okay if your watching a you tube video for business or visiting a website or checking your emails, but not useful if teenagers wanted to play the latest track on the official charts, i would recommend as a accessorize to buy docking speakers.

Overall, i think this laptop is good to buy if its not to be used for social needs... the price is very reasonable for what its offering. As a recommendation i would go to other Toshiba make laptops instead of this one.

      great computer for the price

I got this laptop two years ago, and it was definitely cutting edge. The Quad-Core i7 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M GPU with 1GB of dedicated graphics memory made the laptop great; beating many other laptops in terms of performance and speed! When I first saw the laptop, I was actually really surprised by how small it was.
I got the laptop from Amazon just before Christmas 2010, after having had my last laptop since the summer of 2006, right before I started going to college. Wow, the technology of laptops has advanced in just a few years! I bought the Toshiba Satellite A660-1DW because I was looking for a laptop that would be good for work (I do a lot of working from home) as well as for movies, music and games.
So I'm going to compare this with my previous laptop. The performance is great, the CPU i7 720qm quad core processor is good enough for pretty much anything, and if you like playing computer games like I do then you will appreciate that the quad core makes the laptop fairly future proof.

      Good laptop for work

Brilliant speed, runs multiple programs without any problem.
As I bought a referbished one, got it for a fantastic price, was as good as new as it was manufacturer refurbished so all wearable parts would have been replaced by brand new. Looked brand new too at the time, just didn't come in original box.
Saved a lot of money because of this, probably wouldn't have bought it for the RRP at the time though.
Well sized widescreen, very quiet when running and fans do very well to keep the laptop cool, which is impressive considering the processing power. The keyboard is a great size, and has a useful button to disable the track-pad if necessary (this is really helpful whilst typing).
Fantastic energy saving feature too which lets you know exactly how much is being used. If on whilst computer is idling or running programs such as microsoft office and the internet, uses about the same amount of power as a 20Watt light bulb.

        Can easily replace a desktop.

When I got this two years ago, it was cutting edge. The Quad-Core i7 processor, 4GB of DDR3 RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M GPU with 1GB of dedicated graphics memory made this system at the top of the market; beating many other computers, especially other laptops/notebooks, in terms of performance and speed!

Upon unpacking the laptop I was first surprised by how slim the system was. Due to my only prior experience with gaming laptops being Alienware laptops which are notorious for being powerful but also extremely large, bulky and heavy, I was expecting similar from this laptop. I bought it online and therefore had no idea of what to actually expect in terms of size. I can happily say that the slimness of the system was a good surprise. This low profile makes it surprisingly easy to carry around as it can also fit snugly inside many laptop cases as it is just under 17" in screen size. A slimmer design also indicated less weight and this is true for this laptop, this adds to the portability of the system so you can use its immense power without being stuck at the same desk day in, day out. I generally use this laptop in bed, on a laptop tray (Fun Fact: I am actually doing this very thing whilst writing this review!), if this laptop was heavy then I would not be able to do this as it would get very uncomfortable, but I can handle this laptop being on me for hours upon hours without the weight becoming an issue at any point!

As I have said, this laptop is extremely powerful. Its main specifications are as follows:

        - Windows® 7 Home Premium 64-bit
        - Intel® CoreTM i7-720QM Processor
        - 500 GB 5400rpm Hard Drive
        - Velvety Black with matt black keyboard
        - 4GB DDR3 RAM
        - NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 330M GPU

The full specifications can be found on its official Toshiba page as linked below:
        http://www.toshiba.co.uk/discontinued-products/satellite-a660-11m/

This power enables it to handle pretty much anything you throw at it with ease. The main intensive task I have regularly done with this system is video editing and encoding for YouTube, this laptop has handled this well and gets the job done in a matter of minutes. I suspect using computers of lower specification would make this task last far longer and make them almost useless at such a task. I have also gamed using this laptop. All of the games I have ran on it have been able to run at maximum or near maximum settings with a high frame rate with no trouble whatsoever.

Now, this power does have downsides as you may suspect. If a computer is processing more, it needs more power - it cannot do something from nothing. Therefore it must drain power from its battery at a greater rate than that of laptops with less power. This certainly shows in this system. The official battery life of this laptop is 3 hours and 20 minutes from the specifications page on the Toshiba website - I do not have a clue how they could veer get this battery life from this system. Even from the first day of having the laptop, it could never even come close to achieving this. On a good day, running common programs such as a web browser and email client, I will get about 1 hour and 30 minutes from a full charge in the pre-installed Windows 7. If I choose to actually use the power at my disposal and encode a video or play a game, I will be lucky to get 40 minutes out of it without the power going critical. If you plan on doing something intensive with this system, plug it in first! I have came close to losing work accidentally many times because I got carried away with it and forgot to check the power level.

The choice of applications also affects the noise of the laptop. When doing basic things, you will have just a quite breeze coming out of the vent at the side of the system which is not loud in the slightest, you will not even notice it once you get working. However, when you choose to use the computer fully, you may well think that somebody has walked in your house and began using a leaf blower - it gets extremely loud and the air coming out of the vents could probably cook a few steak dinners!

The build of the system is pretty average. it has a plastic casing all around which although not the ideal material for a laptop susceptible to overheating, still makes the laptop feel solid and well made due to being a perfect fit for the components and having a great attention to detail thanks to being embossed all around and having nice smooth curves and includes around the edges. The keyboard has island-style keys which means that there is spacing between each of them, this is great for fast typists as it means they are less likely to catch the wrong key and it also helps distinguish between different ones as they move their hands around it. However, they keys themselves are not perfect - my 'A' key for instance, can unclip itself from the mechanism underneath as I type and required pushing back on to become usable again. I admit that this could be a one-off occurrence but the other keys do not feel too solid either and I expect the same to happen to another soon.

The computer has a variety of ports making compatibility fantastic. A quick list included multiple USB 2.0 ports, a HDMI output, a VGA output, 3.5mm headphone and microphone ports, an SDXC/HC slot as well as many other useful ones (Check the link above for a full list). The fact that the system can output directly to a HD monitor via HDMI makes up fro the fact that the laptop's display itself isn't full HD and is only just over a little over 720p (which is still pretty good and definitely more than the majority of people will ever need anyway).

The screen is bright and offers great colouring. I did have an issue with a single dead pixel when I bought it but as the screen must have at least 5% dead pixels before it is classed as faulty, did not constitute a replacement. A single dead pixel isn't noticeable anyway except in certain situations. Being around 17", the screen is fantastic for watching videos on either on your own or even with a friend or two - everyone will get a nice view of the screen even if it is a few metres away from you. The multimedia experience is greatly enhanced by the Harman/Kardon speakers built in to the laptop. I am not a sound guy and never claim to be, I am happy with almost all speakers as, to me, they generally sound the same. However, many of my friends were amazed by the inclusion of this brand of speaker and assure me that they are top of the range. They also listened to the sound from these and were very impressed!

Overall, if you like to do very intensive tasks at home but you still want the portability that a lightweight laptop gives you, this would definitely not be a bad choice. The main downside will be that if you are away from a socket for too long, you may be in a little trouble.
